I think what no one is really talking about is the fact that not just a legendary club is lost but an entire musical culture of NYC is being washed away. Though not as hip or popular as CBGB’s, The Continental is now a dive. Most of the greats played there as well, including Iggy. NYC clubs are fading out and even the ones in Brooklyn are far from the scenes that manhattan used to muster. What’s really happening is that the clientel is not there. Kids don’t go to shows anymore. Whether its, I don’t want to pay for it, or general apathy, the ipod napster generation doesn’t not go to shows at the local haunt. When they do go its to festivals where the scene outstages the acts and stadium shows where the sounds are booming and the feel of a basketball game. NYC is suffering not just from rent hikes but lack of crowd. Live music is dying and nobody cares. No money is made and club owners are forced into finding money making ventures. So when we point the finger at city governments and property value hikes because of NYU, don’t forget to point the finger at the little NYU kids who are the apathetic theifs that are killing the scene. If our youth culture had a spine, music wouldn’t be backdated and our heroes over the hill.
