Ryan Adams: So Good at Being Someone Else

10/13/06, 1:28 pm EST

Ryan Adams Ramones

Why are all of Ryan Adams’ side-projects so much better than his recent official releases? There was that awesome Willie Nelson record that Ryan produced, which really got us psyched about what he’s up to these days. But then the remarkably so-so track “France” he posted on his Web site brought us down a notch. We’re happy to report we’re back up with this: thirty-six totally random and apparently previously unreleased tracks featuring chicken noises, Chuck Norris and a serious crush on three-chord punk rock.

We love these tracks! The songs are spontaneous and silly and rough and sound like Black Flag if they were from New York and fronted by a North Carolina-born alt-country rocker. We’re not calling it perfection, we’re just saying these songs are fun.

And we’re psyched to see Adams amusing himself again, because it bodes well for the potential quality of future records. Plus, his site looks like it’s now going to feature streams of all the songs on all Adams’ records, and the 80s vector graphics make us want to click on everything we see. Like a rock video game. Like rock Donkey Kong. So thanks for that, Ryan.

This twisted mad scientist genius of rock will be our generations Bob Dylan

Jon | 10/13/2006, 2:55 pm EST

Wow, Christopher. You just attracted at least 20 snarling idiots calling Ryan Adams a “fake.” I also predict that, at some point in the blog, he might “totally suck ass.”

Anyway, I love Ryan Adams. He’s more likely our generation’s Neil Young, though.

Bob Dylan is Jesus’ Son.

Jon | 10/13/2006, 2:59 pm EST

But may I also say his combo of singing ability/virtuosity/ and songwriting may someday allow him to father “our generation’s Ryan Adams.”

And, before the idiots gather, listen to these five songs before passing judgment, because I’ll bet most of you haven’t heard a note, aside from “New York, New York.”

“Come Pick Me Up”
“English Girls Approximately”
“Avenues” (Whiskeytown)
“The End”
“Chin Up, Cheer Up”

fuck all, “so much better than his recent official releases?” you live in an alternate universe or what? fuckin cold roses is the most underrated album of the past two years…

Nate | 10/13/2006, 3:03 pm EST

While I love Ryan Adams and the fact that he’s getting his “punk” on lately, I still think that Beck is our generation’s Bob Dylan, at the same time realizing that there will never again be an artist as vital to music as Dylan was and still is.

Love cup | 10/13/2006, 3:07 pm EST

What a nut grabber.

orson | 10/13/2006, 3:12 pm EST

no thanks, i’ve seen this show before

oxfordstandard | 10/13/2006, 3:29 pm EST

we get it – people like dylan.

i don’t think that he’s the be all and end all.

i think ryan’s pretty fantastic in his own way – which sometimes reflects the ways of others – and that’s cool, it’s like mirroring on a golden note – the gold and the note are an original flare to the initial image.

basically, what i’m saying is – i dig on ryan – and i love his musical stylings… and not to make this a never ending story, but Falcor would be a huge proponents of Ryan’s jambs – they are so much better than the nothing.

I never can understand the hate on his solo (or w/ the Cardinals records). How can anybody listen to Cold Roses or Jacksonville City nights or Gold and think its crap? Just because it’s well produced doesn’t mean its bad…

Ben | 10/13/2006, 3:42 pm EST

Or Heartbreaker, or Demolition or Love is Hell? (29 and Rock and Roll I will let slide)

Rrowr | 10/13/2006, 4:42 pm EST

Bob Dylan isn’t even Bob Dylan, anymore. I agree he’s a genius but wtf?

I’ve only ever heard 2 or 3 songs by Mr. Ryan Adams. One of which, the song that plays when you go to his website, is the greatest piece of music of the 21st century.
“kevincostner.com/wtf?”

Ryan Adams | 10/13/2006, 4:49 pm EST

I am a turd.

i rule | 10/13/2006, 5:09 pm EST

i think he’s our generation’s ryan adams. and i think that’s pretty damn good. stop making comparisons and just listen to the songs. last i checked, it was a lot more fun listening to music than arguing about it.

Adele H | 10/13/2006, 7:03 pm EST

I thought “France” was GREAT.

Hal | 10/13/2006, 8:01 pm EST

grievous pimp | 10/13/2006, 11:20 pm EST

too legit to quit. keep doing yr thing. . .

Kevin Collins | 10/14/2006, 12:33 pm EST

Our generation’s blah blah blah. The Sh*t! rule. Caffinate yer aminal!

Manjit,Indonesia | 10/14/2006, 9:10 pm EST

Ryan is probably the most prolific and talented artist since Dylan. His lyrics are great and his delivery and phrasing are almost on par with “His Bobness”. I wish he would stick with alternative country. Thats where his greatness lies. Just listen to any of his work with Whiskeytown or the alt. country tracks on his solo stuff like “Heartbreaker”,” Cold Roses” ” etc. Drop this punk crap and stay true Ryan.

truant | 10/16/2006, 1:37 am EST

Donkey Kong was typo yanno? Monkey Kong mistyped by some Japanese or Korean or maybe just some really tired looking people. Cryin’ Adams and Pee Wee Dorkety remind me of alot of artists featured in Rolling Stone… much better in print version than audio version.

Janet | 10/16/2006, 1:51 am EST

Ryan Adams is more like this generation’s Gram Parsons.

martyb | 10/16/2006, 2:54 pm EST

“Why are all of Ryan Adams’ side-projects so much better than his recent official releases?” How can this be? In a bizarro world maybe? Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights are always in my very small rotation. If ya have to explain it, I just dunno…
