Brandon Flowers Vs. Green Day, Ryan Adams Not Into Censorship, Usher Gets A Note From Mom

10/13/06, 8:44 am EST

usher

  • Brandon Flowers attacks Green Day for what he sees as their offensive anti-Americanism, saying their American Idiot DVD “really lit a fire” in him.
  • The administrator for the site that hosted the infamous, and often wildly entertaining Ryan Adams message board has explained why the board was shut down. He claims it wasn’t Ryan’s idea, that “sensitive” information like the name of Ryan’s hotel in London, was posted at one time and that freaked everyone out, but when he says, “Ryan and The Cardinals are not interested in censorship,” it sounds to us like somebody got to him.
  • Incubus discuss their upcoming theater tour as a return to humility but guitarist Mike Einzinger says he hopes the band will still play arenas down the road.
  • Usher has to pull out of his last few performances of Chicago because he has an “extreme” case of strep throat, according to his mommy/manager.
  • New video of Jeff Tweedy performing a song from his upcoming live DVD. Good stuff for a contemplative Friday. [via Stereogum]

hell yeah Brandon. Ban Green Day

The Killers Are Gay | 10/13/2006, 10:28 am EST

Will that douche from the Killers shut his f’n mouth. He seems like one of those people who you just want to shake so they stop talking for five minutes.

Bryan | 10/13/2006, 10:35 am EST

Green Day are more successful than The Killers will ever be.

Hantz | 10/13/2006, 10:47 am EST

I will personally slap Brandon Flowers and all of Green Day in their mouths. And then roll them in fish hooks. For fun. Not that I actually think about them any time other than when RS brings them up.

Aaron D. | 10/13/2006, 11:04 am EST

Now that just about everyone knows that the Killer’s new CD is a colossal turd, maybe we should stop listening to him and lash ourselves for ever having done so.

Green Day has more than withstood the test of time, something that the Killers can’t even hope for at this point.

jason | 10/13/2006, 11:12 am EST

follow the link and read the rest of the quote. He says he was offended that the green day dvd was filmed overseas, where Billy Joe fed into the existing anti-americanism over there to get the kids to chant and stuff. In other words, green day were presenting something to their audience that was somewhat contrived, and this is what bothered Flowers.

The Pawn Shop wouldn’t even take Sams Town, so I turfed it.

Jico | 10/13/2006, 12:05 pm EST

They both suck.

Tim Dickinson | 10/13/2006, 12:19 pm EST

Did you ever notice that the biggest loud mouths always have the least amount of knowledge in politics. Just look at Billy Joe, Streisand, and myself. Imagine any one of us in a political debate. Now that would be comic gold.

Aaron D. | 10/13/2006, 12:20 pm EST

jason, you can’t really be that ignorant. Green Day leads the same chants to same song when they play it in the U.S. The notion that they can only play it here is absurd.

Let’s make sure Sprinsteen never plays “Born in the USA” outside the U.S. either. We wouldn’t want to offend the moron contingent.

Aaron D. | 10/13/2006, 12:22 pm EST

TJ Hooker was the greatest show ever.

Corleone | 10/13/2006, 12:49 pm EST

I can see where Brandon is coming from, he’s saying that if you have a problem with America don’t go overseas with that problem just to audience participation. But the fact remains that Green Day are a better band than the Killers any day of the week and twice on Sunday, and I like the Killers.

Simon | 10/13/2006, 1:11 pm EST

I like Brandon Flowers the first time he came around, paging Noel Gallagher

Michele | 10/13/2006, 1:12 pm EST

Y’know, I like the Killers ‘n all, but maybe Brandon should just stop talking now.

B.B.B. | 10/13/2006, 1:17 pm EST

Gary Coleman should host the next American Idol.

Nicoi | 10/13/2006, 1:57 pm EST

oh, brandon flowers… i’m so not loving you right now

but I’d still watch the shower scene in that creepy-non-sense video…

Colton | 10/13/2006, 2:48 pm EST

If you hate Brandon Flowers so much, quit acknowledging him. He’s expressing his views, as you are about him.

anonymous | 10/13/2006, 3:12 pm EST

Where does Brandon Flowers get off insulting Green Day?! Green Day rules. The Killers are useless.

c dilla | 10/13/2006, 3:27 pm EST

as muchas that guy comes off as a complete tool…..he did kinda have a point about the fact that the kids at those shows in europe aren’t taking it the same way that BJ meant it and that it’s feeding into the current hip-to-hate-america mentality.

cheap stunt. Rock and Roll. never.

yellersmom | 10/13/2006, 4:15 pm EST

Billy Joe is saying what every American who hates this senseless war that Bush has gotten us into is feeling and I applaud him loud and clear. This generation is sitting on their hands while this nation is going down the tubes. Good for Green Day for speaking up.

yellersmom | 10/13/2006, 4:17 pm EST

I forgot to say that Brandon Flowers is an ass. It is patriotic to criticize your government; did you forget this country was founded by revolutionaries.

lisa | 10/13/2006, 6:17 pm EST

c dilla,
you have that completly wrong.GD made many Europeans actually love America again, the America, that doesn´t take any crap, that is.We had almost forgotten, that many of you are no “American Idiots”.It´s easy to do that,at times!
On the other hand GD couldn´t make as hate Mr.Bush and his folks anymore, then we allready did, rest asured of that!
For me the Killers are dead, not that I lost much, their new album sucks anyway.

Todd | 10/14/2006, 10:22 am EST

It took nads of steel for Green Day to release American Idiot less than a year after the Dixie Chicks watched their music vanish from every playlist in the country. While almost everyone else in music was sitting on their hands and saying jack-shit for fear of commercial reprisal, Green Day sucked it up and did it for them.

Its *easy* to say what everyone wants to hear, which is what Brandon is doing. He’s playing to the cheap seats. No guts. No integrity.

Todd | 10/14/2006, 10:32 am EST

Don’t wanna be an American idiot.

Don’t want a nation under the new media.

And can you hear the sound of hysteria?

The subliminal mindfuck America.

..or, the Brandon Flowers version:

Don’t wanna be ‘anti-american’.

Don’t want a nation that questions clearchannel.

And can you hear the sound of my hysteria?

We know we dont have a 2nd single so we’re sucking up to corporate mindfuck machine

Carrie | 10/14/2006, 6:39 pm EST

Brandon Flowers knows nothing about any given subject let alone politics and Americanism. Green Day is a way better band than the Killers will ever be. Brandon’s just mad that Billie Joe writes better songs than him and that people actually listen to Green Day. The Killers’ career was over last year.

Brandon Flowers is just looking for a cheap way to get some attention.

Mike | 10/15/2006, 9:55 pm EST

So what does Brandon’s Flower’s “Andy your star really mean”?

No Fun | 10/16/2006, 5:45 pm EST

Actually I know a lot of Europeans don’t like Bush and don’t like America, because America is patronizing the whole world. A lot of Europeans absolutely don’t agree with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

anonymous | 10/22/2006, 10:37 pm EST

nicely put Todd. it’s “one nation under the new mania” but still, well done!

The Killers=future has-beens | 10/26/2006, 12:47 am EST

You wanna talk about cheap publicity stunts…I think it’s mighty interesting that Brandon flowers decided to bash on green day as soon as their newest album came out. Was he that desperate that he needed to try to use green day’s name in order to get some attention and beg for a few record sales? It’s ok Brandon, do what you gotta do to keep afloat, billie joe will understand.

Whatsername | 12/24/2006, 8:56 am EST

don’t use the media as a stage for your bull of an arguement.
don’t attack a musical group who have been in the industry far longer than you could imagine, and have far more knowledge and experience.
and lastly, don’t open your mouth without knowing what you’re gonna say, why you’re gonna say it, and if it even makes sense.

look. it’s easy to say..
“You have Green Day and ‘American Idiot’. Where do they film their DVD? — In England,” …..
… but, Mr. Flowers, do you have any idea why ? Oh, right, yep, so according to you, maybe it’s because they’re really effing immature, and that they wanna make some brash statement, to say England is better, brainwash the English to think that ‘all Americans are idiots’. WHAT A GOOD REASON! Who would think there were any others?
But wait, I’ve got a possible one, maybe it’s just because Green Day are a musical group [as you yourself are part of] and that it’s common for bands o release live DVDs. What better example than Green Day, a band celebrating over 17 years of music and redefining punk rock?
Right, so in all their 17 years, they haven’t released a live DVD yet, and perhaps, open your fking eyes! PERHAPS, brandon flowers, they feel now ready to release one? Right, and where would you take the footage for this monumental film from? An average performance on an averagely-sized stage? OR, maybe, just maybe, they want to take the BEST of the BEST for this DVD, and it so happens that during their sellout tour, Milton Keynes [in England, yes] was their biggest show? What better place to record their first live DVD than in a massive ampitheatre? During a spectacular weekend of music, Green Day, led by Billie Joe Armstrong, played their punk-opera spectacular, stadium-sized rock anthems to over 130000 people.
So what was your reason? Oh, he’s an immature prick. Oh, of course, it could be that. Keeping in mind…

And anyways, who are you to criticise their Americanism? Billie Joe is numerously quoted as saying ‘I’m against Bush, not America’… ‘Bush is ruining our country, the American thing to do would be to stop him taking over our country’

The ‘America’ he speaks of is the ‘America’ that Bush has made, a country based on propaganda, run on lies.

Believe me, I’ve attended their concert, I live in Australia, and the message of the song and their music ring true wherever you are. Of course, you’re entitled to free speech, right Brandon? And guess what? So is Mr. Billie Joe Armstrong. You’re a musician, so tell me, isn’t that what music is about? Sending your message across, expressing yourself and your ideas? Give him his free speech aswell. And in the meantime, give a bit of respect to him. He’s only got a decade or so of experience on you, and a heck of a lot more to say.

Jarred | 4/27/2007, 11:43 pm EST

Brandon flowers and george w bush ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JJ | 12/26/2007, 11:18 pm EST

Wow..people should let Brandon Flowers speak his mind!!! Just because he doesn’t agree with Green Day (whom I am a huge fan of) does not mean he deserves to be bashed. Open your minds….morons.

deibu | 1/1/2008, 2:33 am EST

I don’t agree with Brandon, but I see where he’s coming from.. He also said “I’m sure they meant it in the same way that Bruce Springsteen meant ‘Born In The USA’ and it was taken wrongly..” Born in the USA was considered a patriotic song by the general public, and the Republicans even used it in their ‘84 campaign. It was a misinterpretation. The rest of the world hates the US, and I understand why in many ways. But that song will mean something different to those outside of the US. Personally, I am still proud to be an American, but I won’t ever be an American idiot… And too many people are.

Kristy | 2/19/2008, 11:55 pm EST

Okay I am a big fan of the killers and brandon flowers but i am a huge fan of Green Day! I will say that American Idiot is not there best album in fact i think it’s their worst but mostly cause they started to make sense instead of things that are just really stupid like being really bored. But Brandon should have kept his mouth shut cause lets face it green day has been around for a long time and the killers not so long. but mostly cause green day are legends and i love them to death.billie joe mike and tre rock on!!!!=D

noneofyourbusiness | 2/1/2009, 2:54 pm EST

Some of you need to fucking chill out on Brandon speaking his mind.
Your friends do it all the time when they bash other groups they don’t like, and I’m sure you don’t jump down their throats when they say that [insert musical sensation here] sucks… why does it matter when a musician does it?

And I don’t recall him saying anything about infringing on GDs right to say what they feel, he simply said he didn’t agree, so I don’t know why some idiots are bringing the first ammendment into this as if Brandon said they should be waterboarded for their song… sheesh

I personally didn’t like the song either, if you’re going to make such a blatant political statement (like GD did) then I suggest taking your political ass and DO something about what you’re talking about in your songs… not tour around and let the cash flow in from the emo teens who idolize you and then disrespect their parents when they’re told to turn your shitty music down.

ejej…both bands suck..youre wasting time..fucking idiots…both green day & the killers are stupid inmature bands….green day: former punk posers..actual sell out emo bitches…the killers: ok vocals..background music for gay-bar clubs…..pearl jam is the best, and dont give me the “pearl jam are has beens”..just look the facts: 1.- they dont follow tendencies 2.- loyal fan base 3.-they are way better live act than these amateur boy bands…3.- most pj albums sounds fresh today..(not already dated like green day or the killers)brendan obrien is a better producer..he brings crisp sound & top quality to pj…rob cavallo is a “jump in the wagon of actual tendencies for old bands” producer..and his albums with green day sounds like compressed shit plus he even got them sound like an emo band from nowadays..how cheap is that…plus pj is more diverse on their albums..& actually they have ROCK ALBUMS…you can hear influence coming from the who to zeppelin to neil young to ramones in pj albums…you name it…no shit albums like these two stupid emo-new wave shit for kids..4.-they are more punk than green day..just look at the ticketmaster law suit..as cameron crowe recalls today: “they lost but that was too punk for a popular band coming from the 90’s….eddie vedder acted like a modern day version of joe strummer with an injection of iggy pop & neil young through his veins…pj really is the thing..theyre the personification of an old…great last rock band” 4.- dont even think to give me the “pearl jam vanished after ten”..yes…pj sells dropped because they stopped making less videos or trying too hard with the media or MTV (like green day or the killers anyday)…but fuck..even with that situation…pj sold more than most rock bands from that era..including giants like smashing pumpkins, radiohead, green day (yes i admit it…they sold very well too)oasis & metallica…you figure out…true fucking facts…via RIAA,rolling stone, pitchfork, numerous polls, indy magazines, etc…& i dont care about this but im sure the new pj album is not gonna sell as much as the new green day album…huge reason: mtv people & the entire emo population in this world are as huge as china’s poblation…so a shitload of them actually saves green day’s life..but hey..even with that billie joe seeks advice from tony robbins cause of his insecurities concerning green day’s credibility…so ps: conan said he choosed pj on “tonight show” cause he’s a fan & thought theyre the biggest band on usa…so green day made their debut on fucking mtv..cheap shit…anyway..a sincere “fuck you” to every single fan of emo day & the shitters….got it?
