The CBGB Countdown: Non-Fakers With Tickets, Share Your Review

10/12/06, 5:42 pm EST

So by now you know that we’re on a serious CBGB-is-closing bender in which we chainread Please Kill Me while listening to Television and Richard Hell and Ramones records and pretending that our East Village apartment costs $300 not $3,000. That’s where you come in.

There’s only so much rocking out to Bad Brains that we can do by ourselves. Tonight, for example, we can’t attend the scheduled Tribute to the Talking Heads at CBs. We have to have dinner with our grandmother. So! If you are planning to attend this evening, or any of the subsequent evenings’ festivities between now and Sunday’s Last Show Ever, we want to hear all about it. Post your musings on how absurdly awesome (or not, your call) the last nights of CBs are and you might win…the chance to write something else for us! We are always looking for hot freelance talent so who knows, this could be the beginning of major things for you and your punk-rock-addled brain.

Oh, one thing. We may enjoy a few beverages at your average rock show, but we are never so fucked up that we forget the details, so we’ll know if you submit a bogus review cobbled together from bad blog reports. Don’t even try it.

FUCK these are the days i wish that lived in new york and that i was acctually old enough to be able to get in to cbgb’s. Writing for rolling stone is my dream job

BK | 10/13/2006, 12:38 am EST

I’ll be at The Dictators show on Saturday. I can’t wait to see the fury that is Manitoba!!!

idiot savant | 10/13/2006, 1:22 am EST

zomg. so first, i went and bought an $8 pbr. then i was totally in the mood to hear bands that have been reduced to playing memorial shows for a venue where the owner actively said he’d rather move to Vegas to make more money.
zomg, tonight totally upped the punx!
woo dictators! better yet, let’s just forget wayne/jayne county, cause it’s not like she beat the holy hell out of that racist prick that seems to trademark “Manitoba” from canadian dudes…yay nyc punx! woo!
let’s go turn some tricks, and then beat them up to show how hardocre we are, like back in the good ol’ 1980s in NYC. Yep, just push aside Joey Arias and John Sex…wow, the Dictators were so cool! Let’s go beat up some dudes who dig other dudes! Woo! Punk rock=teh awesome! Yay cromags!

wow, won’t it be so sad to see CBGBs die the sad death it’s been doing ever since Hilly Krystal really didn’t give a shit. Wait, that’s been since the 80s…

warhand | 10/13/2006, 3:11 am EST

very sad, it should be recognized as a historic landmark.

Nick | 10/13/2006, 7:07 am EST

I’ll unfortunatley never get to even visit CBGB’s… I’ve always read about it, and feel it’s a shame that nothing can be done about closing…(Can’t Blondie cough up some dough to save it or something? What about Danzig?…) We’ve got a kind of CBGB’s here in Montreal, called “Foufounes électriques”, which translates to “electric ass”. It’s got an all-star line-up in it’s history as well (big bands before they were big, like Nirvana and Nine inch nails, to name 2) and it’S bathrooms are as grimy as CBGB’s I’m sure. It’s no real consolation, but it’S better than nothing, and you’re all welcome!!!

Little Oscar | 10/13/2006, 9:00 am EST

CB’s was cool. I was introduced to the place in the mid-80’s, after Television, Talking Heads, Blondie and The Ramones moved on to bigger and better things. But there was something about the history, the stage, those nasty black walls, and that staircase down to the bathrooms and all the bohemians sharing their stash made it really cool. I’ll miss it.

Ken Vail | 10/13/2006, 10:03 am EST

i would love to see patti smith at that last show….yeah, why can’t some of these rich bastards put some money together and save this place?

Josh | 10/13/2006, 11:19 am EST

Patti Smith,Talking Heads,Lou Reed,Blondie,The still living Ramones. What do these people all have in common? They’re all amazing artists who frequented cbgbs (and some got their start there) none of these people could get the money together to save cb’s? also, little steven and the boss couldnt? what about “mr messiah” bono? he could wipe his ass with the amount of money it would take to save cb’s. iots pathertic that one of the great rock and roll landmarks of all time has to close when all of these rock stars can’tput together some chump change to save it…PATHETIC!

The Truth | 10/13/2006, 8:17 pm EST

It ain’t about the money people. The owner of the building simply wants CBGB gone. Money isn’t going to change that.

annay * | 10/13/2006, 10:20 pm EST

i went to new york in august and dragged my best friend all over manhattan until we found it so that i could get a picture outside CBGB’s. i wasn’t old enough to get in and it was the middle of the day, but at least now i can tell people that i saw the original CBGB’s! i may only be a kid from a small town in canada, but that place means a lot to a lot of people and it’s pretty tragic that the doors are closing for good.

Cas422 | 10/13/2006, 11:32 pm EST

Fuck … but really people, Las Vegas? That’s where my parents go to see the Cirque du whatever …
I’ll remember the mid 80’s and the dirty black walls … I’d rather inhale more Jack Daniels and send Hilly $200 to help out with medical costs … But that’s just me.

Mike in Mtl | 10/14/2006, 7:27 am EST

It’s a sad day…
But I surely won’t miss the bathroom stalls! :)

Sam | 10/14/2006, 4:42 pm EST

Not that i’ll make it there since it’s like 3,000 miles away, but it would be an awesome show if they put it on a dvd. I guess a combo of new/old bands from Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, New York Dolls, Gang of Four etc to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hives and Sleater-Kinney should come and do some songs even though they broke up… probably many others as well…

kayla t. | 10/14/2006, 6:52 pm EST

to me i think its a sad thing to “see” cbgb close down. it’s a piece of american history and personally it should be here forever. im only 14 years old and its been my dream to see the place.i’ve read all about it, listened to all the artist who made the place famous, and studied it’s amazing culture. it just sucks that im sooo young and i never got the chance to experiance the great things in life (ie. woodstock ‘69 & seeing the doors live) so i guess that means going to cbgb. oh well, what what was ment to be my dream will remain a dream.

nick | 10/15/2006, 12:35 am EST

why,why,why,why,why?

Sid Olson | 10/15/2006, 2:51 am EST

I remember having to take a crap on a Saturday night while playing at CB’s with Lyrical Whips in the 80’s. A ton of people lining up the steps waiting, the door to the men’s room wide open, and no toilet seat. We were about to go on. I’m hovering over the bowl, trying to look as cool as possible. Not possible. I didn’t care. I pinched it, then went to the little closet upstairs before going on. For two seconds, I thought about all of the legends who’ve waited in that same room before me, honored. Then I spit in the corner and headed for the stage. Great gig with The Smithereens, but made only enough to cover the beer tab and a cab ride home. As usual. Good times, won’t be forgotten. Hope the Vegas thing ain’t too cheezey…

Larry | 10/15/2006, 1:28 pm EST

1977, go in and go upstairs by accident, nothing but stoned out heroin addicts nodding out evrywhere. Other than that it was quite an experience, with slam dancing still in vogue. It was the type of evening you never forget.

Rich | 10/15/2006, 2:00 pm EST

It’s gone–clubs and people. Max’s, CBGB, Mudd Club, Studio 54. The list goes on-and-on. A lot of the people that we knew lived full throttle by those clubs. They’re gone now compliments of modern chemistry and youthful naivety.

It’s an inevitable fact of life–we die, we all die.

Ñuka. Spain | 10/15/2006, 3:31 pm EST

goodbye CBGB!!! :’(

M. Komar | 10/15/2006, 6:16 pm EST

Man this sucks. Why didn’t Bloomberg turn CB’s into a historical landmark? It’s a sad day in rock music and the New York music scene.

Tim Holmes | 10/15/2006, 6:20 pm EST

It was a moment in time, just like Elvis, the Beatles, you can’t repeat it! Hey, your over 21, quit living in the past, move on!

Orbit | 10/15/2006, 7:47 pm EST

Wow,I am so bummed…where can I go now to hang out with a bunch of losers in a place that stinks of puke, urine and stale beer.

kevin | 10/15/2006, 9:03 pm EST

All I can do is echo the sentiments of those below me: what a shame. Being a West Coast kid into old New York shit makes times like these tough. Whatever the reason, the fact that a musically priceless venue is closing is almost depressingly sad. And why oh why couldn’t I have gone and had a chance to freelance for RS? If ever there was a job for me, that would be it. I hope RS gets the memo.

Ricky Lance Lane | 10/15/2006, 9:37 pm EST

As a member of The Gentz, I can honestly say I have expeienced CBGB’s from the Stage and the Audience. Two uniquely different perspectives. Both great.

There will never be another CBGB’s. And I cherish every gig The Gentz played at this unique venue. I cherish every band I have had the opportunity to see at this venue.

Many of us are still going strong. Willy DeVille, Tuff Jeff Salen from the Tuff Darts, and so many others.

Best of lick Hilly, and the rest of the crew. We will all miss you….

Jeff G | 10/15/2006, 10:02 pm EST

CB’s… when I was 16 (back in ‘89) we would take the train in every weekend from long island with a few six packs to see some of the greatest underground bands on the planet – 7 seconds, bold, upfront, insted, sick of it all, youth of today, underdog, minor threat, suicidal tendencies, token entry, bad brains, agnostic front, … the bowery ain’t what it used to be and that’s probably a good thing (no more crack viles), but CB’s will be missed…

PILSEN | 10/15/2006, 10:11 pm EST

I was there last night. Un-freaking beleiveable. I danced and hopped next to an older gentleman, who was also hopping to The Dictators.

The gentleman was Tommy Ramone.

truant | 10/16/2006, 1:49 am EST

I think the best tribute for this club would be for someone to shit in their hands and throw it all over the crowd. Just like old times.

Jake Burns | 10/16/2006, 8:31 am EST

The DICTATORES!!!!!!

CK | 10/16/2006, 9:57 am EST

How could you have seen Minor Threat at CB’s in ‘89 when they broke up in 1983?

Real Punk | 10/16/2006, 1:31 pm EST

What’s sad about it? Since when is punk rock mentality history-minded? Go drink cheap battery acid and find another club, dickheads.

B.J. | 10/17/2006, 5:45 pm EST

WHY!!!!!!! who let this happen? What’s next are they going to take the 100 club away and build a god forbid Wal mart over it.

Bill Coleman | 11/12/2006, 1:27 am EST

During the press conference, Smith answers questions as they are asked, giving the responses she gave when she came a few hours earlier. “Its [CBGB’s] just a symbol; a state of mind,” she said.

Someone asks if this night was a funeral for the bar and for punk.
“What a stupid fuckin’ question,” she responds, followed by cheers, sneers and a round of applause.

Smith says of Hilly and his acceptance of her and other musicians, “He was our champion, and in those days they were very few.”

Smith and long-time guitarist Lenny Kaye played us out with the best musical montage I think I am ever going to hear.

At the pace of album-speed, roughly a third as fast as they played live according to my ear, a four-song Ramones-medley starts with a rousing “Hey Ho, Let’s Go!”

This signals the start of the Blitzkrieg Bop, setting wheels in motion for the last lap at the track.

As they hit the end of the second chorus, four distinct chords are played, heralding the start of Beat on the Brat. The two hard “ooohhh!” sounds in the chorus reflect the beauty of Smith’s voice, sounding like an operatic note-hold and a steam-whistle telling Fred Flintstone the day is over.

This goes through two choruses as well, then “1-2-3-4!” comes and Rock n’ Roll Radio begins. Another incredible rendition, showcasing Smith’s talent and obvious experience with the song.

The anthem had members of every news outlet imaginable bopping around like they were 16 with too much glue up their nose.

After the 1st chorus was through, images of covers over-head and radios-blaring in their heads, Sheena is a Punk Rocker is meshed in, stressing the importance of women in punk and to the CBGB’s story.

I’ll never stop kicking myself for filling my voice recorder in my pocket in line before. Half of it is almost worse than having none.

I visited CBGB’s as a teenager in 1974. I snuck in with my girlfriend and her brother. That night the first group was a blond woman with a band that sounded okay but I was not impressed, as I came to see THE RAMONES. Little did I know that the first group would be BLONDIE. It was a great night topped off by me driving us all back to NJ because the other two were too wasted…

Got a CBGBs T-shirt?

Feb. ‘79. I arrived early,
Too early,
Took the best table
In CBGBs. I
Communed w/ the ghosts of
Folkie Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground,
Pre-gunshot Andy Warhol. The bands that
Actually played were like Radiohead, not hot, but I
