Live Review: Under the Influence of Giants Get New Yorkers All Jiggy

Under the Influence of Giants is the latest act to marry dance beats with unapologetic classic rock references. But with a geniune rock n’ roll pedigree — drummer Jamin Wilcox is the son of Hall and Oates’ drummer Willie Wilcox — and a lead singer whose falsetto evokes the brothers Gibb, they’re doing it better than most.

Last night at New York club Rebel, it was clear that UTIOG’s catchy fusion of styles is gaining momentum with more than just the TRL set. During the dance-pop confection “In the Clouds,” singer Aaron Bruno got the entire crowd jumping — no small feat for a small band playing to a tough-customer NYC crowd. UTIOG’s husky sweater-vest-sporting bassist David Amuezcua, a furry-faced dude in oversized nerd glasses, added to the fervor, running in place every time the passion struck him — which was often. Other highlights included the appropriately Hall and Oates-tinged “Got Nothing,” the headbang-inducing “Ah Ha,” and the infectious single “Mama’s Room.” At the end of the ballad “Stay Illogical,” Bruno told the audience he felt like he was on “American Idol,” or “something epic” like that. We concur. In the immortal words of “Idol” judge Randy Jackson, “That was dope.”

I love the guys, especially the lead singer(Aaron) wearing those tight creamy white bellbottoms. U.T.I.O.G. is the kings of music.
