David Bowie is David Bowie so he can do whatever the hell he wants and we will not judge. Even if he chooses to play a character called Lord Royal Highness (what else would he be called, really) on SpongeBob SquarePants. “It’s happened. At last. I’ve hit the Holy Grail of animation gigs. Yesterday I got to be a character on . . . tan-tara . . . SpongeBob SquarePants. Oh Yeah!!” Bowie wrote on his blog. We’re getting the sense that we need to Tivo an episode or four of this show. First Jack Nicholson name-checked it as one of the only cartoons he can stomach, now this Bowie thing. Is the ‘toon actually good or just less shitty than the other options one has as a parent?

Anyway, this latest Bowie guest-staring role comes during a veritable epidemic of rock star appearances in random TV shows. There’s this (actually pretty funny) clip of Chris Martin’s skit on the hit British sitcom Extras, in which he mocks himself quite successfully. And today news arrived that Roger Daltrey will guest star in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. No idea yet what he’ll play (”a surprise role that will keep viewers guessing” the producers demure) or when it will air, but like, wow. We already love the Law & Order episodes based on rock star’s bad behavior (see the Britney/Kevin episode featuring “Skye Sweet” and “J-Train”) this trend could be even more obsession-enducing.
