Hot Trend: Celebrated British Rockers Guest Star on SpongeBob, CSI

David Bowie is David Bowie so he can do whatever the hell he wants and we will not judge. Even if he chooses to play a character called Lord Royal Highness (what else would he be called, really) on SpongeBob SquarePants. “It’s happened. At last. I’ve hit the Holy Grail of animation gigs. Yesterday I got to be a character on . . . tan-tara . . . SpongeBob SquarePants. Oh Yeah!!” Bowie wrote on his blog. We’re getting the sense that we need to Tivo an episode or four of this show. First Jack Nicholson name-checked it as one of the only cartoons he can stomach, now this Bowie thing. Is the ‘toon actually good or just less shitty than the other options one has as a parent?

Anyway, this latest Bowie guest-staring role comes during a veritable epidemic of rock star appearances in random TV shows. There’s this (actually pretty funny) clip of Chris Martin’s skit on the hit British sitcom Extras, in which he mocks himself quite successfully. And today news arrived that Roger Daltrey will guest star in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. No idea yet what he’ll play (”a surprise role that will keep viewers guessing” the producers demure) or when it will air, but like, wow. We already love the Law & Order episodes based on rock star’s bad behavior (see the Britney/Kevin episode featuring “Skye Sweet” and “J-Train”) this trend could be even more obsession-enducing.

Bowie has appeared in more than a handfull of projects unrelated to music. Even comedies like Zoolander, besides the fact that he is not a bad actor himself. The guy remains cool in my book no matter what he does.

David Fricke AND Bowie on Spongebob? I mean, Bowie is famous I guess but Fricke has a face for radio (also, he’s insufferably pretentious)…can’t imagine kids wanna see an animated rock critic extol the vitues of Can b-sides. But what do I know?

:-)
Hey, he did Zoolander, he might as well do this.

Spongebob frickin’ rocks, and so does Can, and so does David Bowie. If they played some Tago Mago during Spongebob while Bowie chats with Squidward and Patrick, OK by me.

Bowie was in Extras too ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =8qsRgrPJ2pY ) :

Little fat man who sold his soul
Little fat man who sold his dream
Chubby little loser

Chubby little loser
National joke

Pathetic little fat man
No one’s bloody laughing
The clown that no one laughs at
They all just wish he’d die

He’s so depressed at being useless
The fat man takes his own life
He’s so depressed at being hated
Fatty takes his own life
Fatso takes his own life
He blows his bloated face off
He blows his stupid brains out

He sold his soul for a shard of fame
Catchphrase and wig and the jokes are lame
He’s got no style
He’s got no grace
He’s banal and facile
He’s a fat waste of space

He’s banal and facile
He’s a fat waste of space

See his pugnose face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
See his pugnose face
Pug, pug, pug, pug

See his pugnose face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
The little fat man with the pugnose face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
The little fat man with the pugnose face
Pug, pug, pug, pug
He’s a little fat man with a pugnose face
Pug, pug, pug, pug

Have you seen the episode where coutney love uses spongebob as a contraceptive? Two thumbs way up!!

Timroc | 10/12/2006, 9:46 am EST

Maybe Bowie will take Patrick, Squidword and Spongebob out to Thunder Ocean on his Red Sails and meet Joe the Lion as they go Station to Station searching for the Thin White Duke!

Oh come all you children
don’t grab that scabby hand
it belongs to mr. sniff and tell
it belongs to the candyman

Don’t whore your little bodies
to the worms of paradise
like everest it’s fatal
its peaks are cold as ice

they’re riding on the subways
they’re riding on the streets
they’ll ride you down to the gutters
they’ll ride you off your feet

gonna hit crack city
hit crack city
