One morning in 1973 George Harrison woke up and said to himself: “We need a chess set modeled after Ringo’s hands.” Was everyone on earth stoned in this moment? Perhaps. And doesn’t that just prove that the more drugs we take the more insanely random but cool shit we will have to play with. Check out this gold-and-silver-plated chess set on display in a Tokyo department store. Harrison apparently commissioned the set from designer Robin Crookshank to celebrate Ringo’s love of chess. You can buy your own real, live replica for a mere $27,800. Get to it.

I’m surprised each side’s king isn’t an upthrust middle finger to everyone who only cares about Ringo because the other Beatles are either dead or Paul McCartney.

This chess set was designed by artist/musician/producer Klaus Voormann, not Robin Crookshank.
