Anyone who has seen the CHANEL T-shirts sold at Cat Power shows knows that Chan Marshall has a thing for the symbiosis between her name and that of the legendary fashion house. And anyone who’s seen her perform recently knows she has a glamorous side. When she played at Irving Plaza a few weeks ago she kept taking off her Louboutin peep-toe pumps and then putting them back on, like she couldn’t decide which version of herself she wanted to be. We admire this totally schizophrenic fashion behavior. And apparently so does Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, who has reportedly tapped the singer’s look for use in a brand new Chanel jewelry ad campaign.
Marshall reportedly told Womens Wear Daily that Lagerfeld discovered her in front of the Mercer hotel in New York City. “I was outside waiting, sitting on a pile of Louis Vuitton luggage, drinking water, with an apple and a cigarette in my hand, my cell phone, oh, and two guitars, and out comes Karl,” she reportedly recalled. “He walks up, looks at me and says, ‘Only a woman can look glamorous when smoking.’ And I lowered my glasses and pointed to [the shadows under my] eyes and said, ‘With these?’ ” Thus began a beautiful and mutually beneficial friendship. This is so much cooler than Pharrell and those Louis Vuitton ads.
