Comment of the Day: “Whitney Houston” So Totally Not Anti-Drug

10/10/06, 11:42 am EST

On Friday we posted this hilarious, and star-studded, anti-drug video clip (see Nancy Reagan Nostalgia:
“Stop the Madness”
). Among the random famous humans who make appearances in this really trippy clip is a very young Whitney Houston, who has — according to “her” comment — serious regrets about ever having represented herself as anti-drug.

“She” writes:

This video was before I learned of the positive aspects of drugs. I apologize if I’ve offended any of you.

It’s just very moving when a formerly reckless star takes responsibility for decisions made during her impulsive and ill-informed youth.

Where’s an overdose when you need one?

Yup, it’s a strange turn of events. We loved her back then, and can’t believe where she is at now…if she is ‘anywhere’…shame.

Look baby, you have the power and you can find the strength. Plus you don’t want to start lookin all nasty when you get older. My prayers. And for everybody else, take a chill and wish the best for people who need your understanding and help. We are all related in this universe and if you don’t understand that, you will…so learn and open your arms to your brothers and sisters starting now.

To characterize the Nancy Regan video as “hilarious” smacks of an amature struggling to appear wity at the expense of a genuine effort to impact the tragic drug epidemic in today’s world.

So am I to believe that “ROCK&ROLL DAILY” is pro-drug and anti-rehab? Hmmmmm…. Don’t take shots unless you understand what the problem is, and then volunteer at a drug treatment center for a few weeks.

Or do drugs in the worlplace fall pretty close to the tree?

pitythefool | 10/13/2006, 9:22 pm EST

Do you actually think Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign encouraged anyone to stay off drugs? Nancy may have been sincere (maybe), but the campaign was completely ineffective. It’s like that commercial where the guy fries the egg and says, ‘This is your brain on drugs.’ According to follow up studies, that commercial appealed to adult, non-drug users (as did the “Just Say No”) campaign, but didn’t have any effect whatsoever on kids. The anti-meth commercials of today are much better at scaring people away from drug use. “Just Say No” was a bandage on a gunshot wound.

Whether Whitney knew about the positive aspects of drugs before doing that album is not the issue here. Drugs are always bad for health and will remain so forever. Anyone thinking otherwise is in a fool’s paradise.
