Panic! Frontman Bares Chest to Make Peace With Dresden Doll Fans

10/6/06, 12:21 pm EST

We’ve been catching up on this Panic! at the Disco/ Dresden Dolls controversy and feeling like a timeline or some notecards would be helpful. It seems that during this summer’s Panic! at the Disco tour, the Dresden Dolls, who opened for Panic!, had some serious problems with both group’s respective fans loathing each other. We can’t really see flocks of gum-smacking mall-rats digging the Dresden Dolls’ wacky show. And they didn’t.

In this epic blog entry, Dresden Dolls frontwoman Amanda Palmer describes her frustration and suggests a solution involving the boys from Panic!, some silent-movie-style video footage and the Dresden Dolls’ new single “Backstabber.”

After watching the results of this collaboration, we guess the point is to make fun of the feud between the bands’ fans by pretending to kill each other? It doesn’t totally work and some serious backstory is necessary but listen, you get to gaze upon the bare chest of Panic! frontman Brendon Urie and we know thousands of those Dresden Dolls haters out there will enjoy that shit.

Panic at the disco are no talent, non substantive, indie garbage. Well, at least they know what crowd they’re aiming for. They don’t deserve to play on the same stage with The Dresden Dolls.

Jessica | 10/6/2006, 1:31 pm EST

i love panic! at the disco they rox my sox off! woot woot!!!!

Joe | 10/6/2006, 2:09 pm EST

I love Panic! and Dresden Dolls. But Dresden Dolls have some much more talen than Panic! ever will

Delicious B | 10/6/2006, 3:04 pm EST

I love how the writer never makes any attempt to talk about the song featured in the video instead keeping the focus on Brendon’s bare chest (see url, last line). For anyone curious, the song is actually really good and The Dresden Dolls make and play amazing music.

Elizabeth Goodman | 10/6/2006, 3:11 pm EST

The Dresden Dolls are indeed awesome. Part of the irony about this is that they are so much more awesome than Panic!.

elise | 10/6/2006, 4:36 pm EST

panic! at the disco are the most differnt thing to hit music ! i love them

mike a | 10/6/2006, 7:19 pm EST

Too bad panic sounds exactly like fallout boy but then again so does the rest of the genre.

Michael | 10/6/2006, 9:17 pm EST

Dresden Dolls are so far beyond anything that Panic! will ever do. I’m sure that the second album will quickly have them forgotten. Like the late 90’s Rap rock this horrible emo phase will end soon and Yes Virginia… all the emo bands (Dashboard, Panic, Fall out Boy) will fall, fall, fall; they wont be able to book b-day parties. All hail the 8ft bride and one of the best drummers in rock today. See you guys at Bimbos.

Madz | 10/6/2006, 11:25 pm EST

Sorry to say but the Dresden Dolls lack any form of melody. At least Panic! songs are more memorable in terms of tune, and they have better lyrics also.

blah | 10/6/2006, 11:35 pm EST

i love them both. i fail to see how even the most tone- deaf amongst us can’t appreciate the originality of both these bands.

laura | 10/7/2006, 12:29 am EST

ilove the dresden dolls.they’re amazingly talented and deserve more credit then what they get. the dresden dolls actually make quality music instead of all this crap panic at the disco make and if panic didnt have the whole carnival freakshow image they would just be another boy band

Truant | 10/7/2006, 1:26 am EST

Check out my band at Myspace. Keyword Truant and look for the cadillac license plate.

Me. | 10/7/2006, 10:22 am EST

I haven’t heard much of The dresden dolls, but from what I’ve heard (and no intent of offense here) it’s not the sort of music that I like “much”.. I love Panic! at the disco but I don’t think I am (as the Dresden Dolls singer said) a “gum smacking mall rat..”, I just believe the music that Panic does (way beyond their looks and everything else) is amazingly creative and excellent.. I believe none of the groups fans should insult each other.. what do you win with that? The groups are TOURING together people. Handle that, and that’s it. If you don’t want to listen to Panic, don’t listen to Panic, you don’t have to. Just leave earlier. And Panic Fans, if you don’t want to listen to the dresden dolls, you don’t have to either!.. just arrive later. That’s it. And all of you Panic Haters, why the fuck are you posting messages on a Panic article? just ridicoulous.

Me. | 10/7/2006, 10:24 am EST

And, clearyfying something.. Panic! is NOT AN EMO BAND! just stop saying that! =P

Like it Matters | 10/7/2006, 5:19 pm EST

I love both of these bands so very very much! They are both amazing! They are both refreshingly original. So everyone, take a deep breath and put your egos aside. Because we would all rather chop our hands off and eat them than listen to your rant on how one band should kill the other.

pk | 10/7/2006, 5:24 pm EST

I’m on The Dresden Dolls’ side.

KC | 10/7/2006, 5:49 pm EST

Both Suck!

No name | 10/7/2006, 6:19 pm EST

If u don’t like Panic! or The Dresden Dolls just keep your comments to yourself haters just leave them out of hater life.

Evan | 10/7/2006, 6:50 pm EST

Panic at the Disco are completely terrible…

but the Dresden Dolls are quite amazing.

Panic! Dolls | 10/8/2006, 3:04 pm EST

Why can’t you like both of them? The Dresden Dolls are an established band and it shows, they have perfected they’re craft of punk-cabret.Panic! At The Disco is just starting out, they made an awesome debut record. You can’t try to compare the two together, you just can’t. They both have their talents and failures when it comes to vaudeville-style rock. They both have same influences, which is (for anybody who wants to talk, I have seen five circus-de-soleil show live and four televised.) vaudeville circus-de-soleil alternative rock.

some person you don't know | 10/9/2006, 12:55 am EST

panic chose the dresden dolls so why would people hate them? It’s like insulting panic at the disco.
And if you hate panic at the disco get off this page, no one cares that you hate them just go tell what you like not saty on this. if you came for the dresden dolls they also chose panic. insulting panic insulting them.

Brittany | 10/9/2006, 11:18 am EST

Panic! At The Disco are hell betta than Dresden Dolls. So stop saying Panic! crap when it’s not.

Justin | 10/9/2006, 2:17 pm EST

This is a joke. Panic! chose to bring along The Dresden Dolls (still the biggest mistake of their young careers) and now they have to try and win over THEIR crap of fans. What a joke. Panic fortunately have taken over the world and will not stop anytime soon, sorry to say to you ‘loyal’ Dresden fans. These two music genres are totally different and should NEVER be combined in a show, let along a tour. Dresden fans are crying just because of how famous Panic has become and it is unfortunate Dresden will NEVER reach that plateau. So next time Dresden headlines a show of 150 people, and Panic is selling out a 5,000 people venue. Think about it, and stop whining that they are not good, because that should tell some of you immature cry babies that they have clearly established themselves in today’s society

daniel | 10/9/2006, 2:58 pm EST

yah, you can like panic! at the disco or whatever, but they definetly dont have the touring experience or talent in songwriting that the dresden dolls have. Its just because the dolls have been doing it longer. i find that panic! at the disco’s live show is just overcompensating for an unoriginal sound.

Anthony | 10/9/2006, 3:07 pm EST

From Justin, about Panic:

“they have clearly established themselves in today’s society”.

But of course, and they all gonna get PHD’s for their contribution. Hah. ha. ha ha! Ha ha ha ha!

daniel | 10/9/2006, 3:12 pm EST

in other news, i finally watched the video…and both bands are hilarious! nice job guys.

Casey | 10/9/2006, 3:19 pm EST

First lets differentiate between real Panic! fans and shreaking 12 yr old fangirls. Fangirls have no clue what Panic’s music is so of course they don’t like the Dresden Dolls. They’re too busy screaming and fainting over Brendon and Ryan. Second, P!ATD and Fall Out Boy don’t sound anything alike. As posted previously, Panic! invited Dresden Dolls on this tour and Ryan and Amanda are good friends. The video is a satire and is meant to make true fans of either band laugh at the ridiculousness of fangirls who, obviously will never get nor like Dresden Dolls.

Mike | 10/9/2006, 4:21 pm EST

Panic at the Disco is the worst thing going in music. They are absolutely terrible live too (VMA’s anyone?) The Dresden Dolls are an incredible band and would probably despise the limelight that Panic has been placed under. So as for Justin’s lame ass argument that Dresden is pissed because Panic has more fans, fuck you dude. Panic! are a bunch of unoriginal douchebags.

Hantz | 10/9/2006, 4:49 pm EST

I think Iggy Pop should have crapped on that baby bird’s naked chest. Or Richard Thompson could have ridden in on a magical grizzly. Then maybe I wouldn’t feel like I wasted 5 minutes of my life watching that film. No, I still would.

Cayse | 10/9/2006, 5:05 pm EST

I think Panic! at the Disco are good. But come on! The Dresden Dolls try way too hard.

Um, Hi. | 10/9/2006, 5:13 pm EST

It was funny, I must say.
I wish the hating people would stop posting comments, it’s just idiotic.
I think all of the bands featured are pretty good
Plus, they both have a pretty good sense of humor to make this, anyway.

Shelley | 10/9/2006, 5:18 pm EST

“The Dresden Dolls are indeed awesome. Part of the irony about this is that they are so much more awesome than Panic!.”

Something I hate about many current music bloggers is their refusal to buy into the idea that musical taste is subjective. Is it so difficult to insert an “I think” before the statement that Dresden Dolls are “more awesome” than Panic? How is it up there on your high horse?

Shelley | 10/9/2006, 5:20 pm EST

“The Dresden Dolls are indeed awesome. Part of the irony about this is that they are so much more awesome than Panic!.”

I really hate how so many music bloggers don’t buy into the idea that musical taste is subjective. Is it really so difficult to insert an “I think” before the statement that Dresden Dolls are “more awesome” than Panic? Because that statement *is* no more than your opinion, as I’m sure you know. How is it up there on your high horse, anyway?

Mike | 10/9/2006, 5:28 pm EST

Isn’t part of blogging getting your point of view across? Speaking of high horses, there is nothing worse than preaching like you’re better than everyone else; especially in an online response section. Honestly, I think this video was funny and I’m not disagreeing that the guys could be cool but their music sucks. And I’m very much entitled to say so. So please step off your throne there tough guy.

Anneh | 10/9/2006, 6:45 pm EST

Lol, that was awesome. I’m still lmao. Nice faints by Brendon & Spence.

Both great bands, doesn’t matter which one’s better.

Awesome vid

Jess B. | 10/9/2006, 6:57 pm EST

If this was a Panic-centric website, then yeah, going there just to say that Panic sucks is immature. But this blog is read by fans and haters alike. So guess what? Haters get to express their opinions, too!

By the way, you can’t really say that music is subjective, and then turn around and whine about how people are “wrong” and being “haters” when they insult your favorite band. The fact that somebody doesn’t like a band doesn’t make them a “hater.” It means they have different taste in music than you do.

Freidrich Charles | 10/9/2006, 7:12 pm EST

“They don’t deserve to play on the same stage with The Dresden Dolls.”

Yes, in fact I doubt there is an existing stage of sufficient quality…WE MUST BUILD A STAGE FOR THE DOLLS, for they are godlike.

mel | 10/9/2006, 8:16 pm EST

i dont get it at all!!!

Damelia | 10/9/2006, 8:21 pm EST

i’ve got 10 bucks on PANIC! at the disco

dude | 10/9/2006, 11:58 pm EST

dresden is only considered godlike to the whole 20 people out of the thousands who saw them on the panic tour. complete and horrible tour. panic def saved the tour, but after 2 hours of watching my feet fall asleep to the hush sound and dresden dolls, i dont know what i could have done.

lets just all be content with the music we like, even tho deep down inside dresden fans and the dolls will forever be in debt to panic for potentially saving their ‘musical career’ by putting them in front of the 10,000 people on a nightly basis, potentially making a fan of them

Nobody1 | 10/10/2006, 12:09 am EST

The best part of Panic at the Disco is that in a few months I won’t have to hear them or hear about them ever again.

Talent Survives Image Sells

Loki | 10/10/2006, 9:11 am EST

Panic is best, hands down. C’mon.

sleeper | 10/10/2006, 12:49 pm EST

Panic is an EMO band…they will fade soon enough….their lyrics don’t make any sense, and are waaay to repetitive….”Thanks Fall out Boy for making this band famous”….I wonder how their original bassist\ex. friend is doing…..he sure got screwed over.

on a lighter note, they are just a bunch of kids.

Freidrich Charles | 10/10/2006, 2:41 pm EST

Emu.

Renny | 10/12/2006, 11:53 pm EST

can i meet the winner of VMA. i hope ican. and i always love pa

Lindsay | 10/15/2006, 12:12 am EST

Is Brendon Urie GAY!

Renee | 10/20/2006, 4:04 pm EST

Honestly I like both bands. Some people only hate panic because they are too popular. But you can just blame that on MTV…hopefully they don’t go after the Dresden Dolls next!

Panic and the Dolls rock…and please don’t say that overly used three letter ‘e’ word anymore its over and done with kids!

Jen | 10/21/2006, 9:05 am EST

It’s so annoying that people are still calling Panic! emo when they’ve already stated how much they disagree with the term. I think both bands rock, and this is an awesome video (nice faints), but I still like Panic a lot more for their lyrics and originality…whoever said they sound like fall out boy is pretty much tone deaf.
Why are people arguing over who’s better? It’s different for evreyone, and seeing as Panic took the Dolls on tour with them,Dolls fans should be a whole lot more grateful as Panic gave them a much bigger crowd than usual…

Alice | 10/29/2006, 10:44 am EST

OMFG, for the last time, Panic! at the Disco aren’t EMO. Because emo = crap sellout music that will disappear in about a month. They don’t write about breaking up with their girlfriends and slitting their wrists – their music is upbeat and harlequin themed. Personally, i think they are the most original band around at the moment. They are all amazingly talented musicians and it is just an added bonus that they are good looking too. I loved them before I even saw their faces. I was screaming along to panic! when they were a tiny band playing in leicester and so were hundreds of other fans so when people inslut them it really makes me mad. And Doll’s fans should be grateful cause if it wasn’t for Panic!, they wouldn’t have been on that tour.

And people who say Dresden Dolls have more talent -OMG are you frikkin tone deaf?! How is the sound of Amanda singing in a whining, moany voice better than Brendon’s amazing voice. And the Doll’s instruments sound like some kids banding on saucepans compared to Panic!. And that is coming froms omeone who actually really likes Dresden Dolls.

Alice | 10/29/2006, 10:46 am EST

*insult *banging *someone

sorry for the bad typos, i was angry

&& | 10/29/2006, 10:55 am EST

Panic! are amazing!!!!

Katrina | 12/8/2006, 9:50 pm EST

I love panic! at the disco. Lennox, I think you’re stupid. panic! has a ton of talent and they aren’t indie garbage. Dresden Dolls SUCKS with a firey passion. They are holding Panic! At The Disco back.

meeeeea | 1/12/2007, 9:16 am EST

i LOVE that video… the boys from Panic! do an amazing job..

i dont like the Dresden Dolls…but i’m not going to diss them like other lame retards out there do about Panic!

PANIC! ROCK

Jessie Sunflower | 2/8/2007, 4:04 am EST

A review of panic at the disco’s second album:

My first warning signal of the immature, whiny self-love fest that is this album was reading the song titles…. there’s something a little too haughty about having a paragraph-long song title, and the graphic designer must of been tearing his/her hair out trying to squash those inane titles into the space of the back of a cd.
IN short, this entire band personified: A poor little rich boy who practically lives at Starbucks, drinking $5 coffees, collecting “save Darfur” and “Free Tibet” etc rubber armbands for the fashion and talking about how much he hates George Bush for no specific reason. In short, self-absorbed shallow kids with barely any experience outside the range of their cellphone reception.
