Axl Rose, the man, the myth, the legend. Is 2006 finally his year?

Like him or not, Axl Rose is one interesting person and most often he is misunderstood. Some people like to think of Axl as an A hole, but that is just because Axl likes to keep to himself and likes his privacy. Axl does not crave attention or look to make headlines, he gets that with out even trying and sometimes I think that embarrasses him. Just him going out for a steak dinner makes headlines, not many other people in music get that, but Axl does.

A lot of Gn’r fans get upset at Axl because still not given us a release date, but he has said a few times (mtv vmas being the most recent) that Chinese Democracy will be released this year some time in the fall. November looks to be the target date since Richard Fortus has told fans the album will be release after the US tour has started (which officially starts mid October. That is something Gn’r did with the Illusions. This album will make or break his career since it is his first album with out the old band. Axl needs to release the best “in your face rocker” on the album as the first single. If the first single is huge then the album will have no problem selling and being huge.

A lot of old Gn’r fans like to think the new songs we have heard so far are not as good as the old bands songs, but that is not the important question. The important question is, are the new songs as good or better than the current mainstream songs on the radio today? Judging from what is currently on the radio and judging from what was on the Mtv VMA’s the answer to that is YES. I think Madagascar, IRS, the Blues and Chinese Democracy, There Was A Time, Catcher in the Rye and Better are just as good if not better than a lot of the music on the radio right now, and those songs are not even the “big guns” that Axl has in store for us. Better is a style we have never heard before by gn’r and could be a huge hit once we get the studio version.

The four demos we have heard are very different and very good. Better mixes pop with metal, while IRS is a mix of old gnr and industrial music. There Was A Time is very November Rainish and Catcher in the Rye (which features Brian May on lead guitar) is a lot like something from the UYI’s and has a Beatles feel to it. IRS actually charted for radio spins, which is a first for a leaked demo. It also got the most votes for one stations cage match in the history of that station. What is so great about the demos is most people have a different favorite which just shows how diverse this album is going to be and is going to appeal to a wide verity of people. This album will have something for everyone, from the old school fans, to new fans.

For those who think Axl cannot sing any more just needs to listen to these demos, he has never sounded better. If anyone has heard him live from the Hammerstein shows, RIR or the Euro tour know that his vintage raspy voice is also back. His voice has been getting better and better with each show.

He has a set of amazing and underrated players backing him up and they have all worked very hard on this album. The few people that have heard the album have all said how great or amazing the songs are, so if CD is promoted the way it should be it could be the best album of 2006. Axl and his new Gn’r could be on top of the music world again. Just looks at the VMAs this past year. The killers headlined, if gn’r played this year they easily would have been the closing act.

Chinese Democracy is going to be like nothing we have heard before from Guns n’ Roses. Tommy calls the new songs “earth shattering” and Dizzy has said the songs will exceed our expectations. Those statements make me wonder how amazing this album could very well be. Brian May and Tommy have both talked about how outrageous/amazing Axl’s voice is on the album. Tommy also alluded that the rockers on CD will be like old gnr, while Zakk Wylde said the songs he heard from CD sounded like AFD on steroids. Axl’s lyrics are said to have deeper meaning than on past albums, we have gotten a taste of that with some of the demo leaks.

Chinese Democracy is going to showcase the new bands diversity and could still be talked about years from now much like AFD is still proclaimed as being just as fresh today as it was 15 years ago. CD is said to be a melting pot album by Axl and I think we will be able to tell what each members input was to each song. I think each song will have each member’s trademark, something they can all be proud of. I am not saying this album will be the best album ever, but I believe it’s going to something that will inspire discussion for years to come. and not only will it serve to cement Axl’s legendary status as the ultimate rock star, it will preserve the dignity of the guns n roses name in the annals of rock history

Axl has had a few false starts over the past 6 years, but it is now time for Axl to take his throne back as the best front man in rock, others have tried but none have even come close to having Axl stage presence or aura. Axl holds his destiny and legacy in his hands. He can either be the huge star he used to be or he can just disappear again. Either way Axl Rose will always be one of music great mysteries. He had it all in the late 80s and early 90s and he can have it all again if he wants it, he just has to release the album and everything will fall into place. Rock has been missing something for quite some time and that something is Axl Rose.

i saw this new incarnation of guns n roses at hammerstein in NY back in May…so much better than back in 2002…Axl has his stage presence back and his voice sounded amazing…the new songs that have leaked are terrific and the studio versions will be 10 times better in quality…GNR is back in a big way!!

everyone should care…there is no denying Axl Rose musical genius…he is one hell of a songwriter, singer, and live performer…half of GNR biggest hits, actually more than half were songs that the rest of the old band never wanted to even play…Sweet Child, Patience, November Rain…those are all Axl Rose people…the music world needs Axl right now because its all crap…GNR could have released a few albums over the years of crap music like Metallica/Pearl Jam, and whoever else sold out! I say “OFF W/ THEIR HEADS” for those who didnt think the album would be out this year. Yes, it was a long wait but you could tell this year was different.

I’d hate to say it, but I think it’s actually true this time.

I saw them a couple weeks ago at the KROQ Inland Invasion. Axl sounds/looks/performs great. His band are as good as they can be for not being the original. That’s only a half compliment. They do their homework but at the same time that means they try way too hard compared to the original band.

I hope it rocks. I don’t see it selling more than 500k in its first week though…I don’t buy the ‘it will set sales records’ hype one bit.

Better is a great tune. I hope the album version sounds better/fuller than the demo.

All idiotic kidding aside, I’m the biggest guns fan since ‘88 and I’m 31 now. I’ve seen the new
GnR 4 times. Vegas twice in ‘02 (New Years Eve)
Once a couple of years later in NY (MSG) then they didn’t show for the Phily show, then I saw them in NY at the Hammerstien Ballroom, 1st of the four shows.(missed Izzy)
Each time they got more and more amazing and it’s wierd to say this but I actually think this band is better. Fink is amazing and Fortus (sp?) is an unknown musical guitar genius. They are just loaded with talent. I liked buckethead better than the Bumblefoot guy but maybe Stradlin will fill in for good???
Anyway I hope GnR give the music industry a shot in the arm, ’cause ROCK really needs it.
Don’t get me wrong, in every bad music period there are still some good bands around but for the most part the only stuff I’m buying right now are the bands that are leftovers from the 90’s

Tool, NIN, Audioslave which were two great bands from the 90’s.

I wont be holding my breath, but if it is actually happening… ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME! Its not really GNR, but I think most people, hardcore fans included, will overlook that if Axl delivers an album of real quality. I tend to agree with the prevailing view that the new material they’ve played live doesnt match the AFD classics for quality. But I would also argue that songs like The Blues and especially Better stand head and shoulders above the current competition. You never know, it just might be a fantastic rock album.

AXL, I am still waiting for my refund. I hope you refund me for the 2 tickets I bought to the show you cut short. I am sure I will get it and the new album when it comes out. Probably the same day we all get world peace.

I am 40 years old have seen old GnR 3 times went to see the new Guns in Glasgow and was totally blown away. Mr Rose is on top form,a living legend and actually appearing like he is enjoying himself.This world needs a rockstar and axl is the real deal.
The new album what I have heard so far will be brilliant-go and see them on tour you will be amazed had how awesome GnR are live.Axl is doing it beause he wants to not for the money he does not need it

I’ll believe it when I see it, but I highly doubt there will be a new studio album this year. But do we really need a new GNR album? The times have changed, and Axl has his head up his ass. If he hadn’t alienated all the former members, we’d have 4 or 5 GNR albums in the last 15 years. But the GNR brand of schock cock rock doesn’t hold up well in 2006. Axl is an ugly motherfucker, can’t sing worth shit, and is an all around asshole. If Chinese Democracy never sees the light of day, I sure wouldn’t lose any sleep.

1991: GNR was sitting on top of the world. Nirvana knocked GNR out of the limelight. Axl alienated all his bandmates. Axl spent the last 15 years with his head up his ass. Time has passed on, and GNR had become a joke: they were on the brink of being one of the greatest bands of all time and Axl blew it. Axl is an ugly mother fucker, can’t sing worth shit, probably smokes crack, and is an asshole. Chinese Democracy will sell well, but it won’t be a landmark masterpiece. In the past 15 years, Axl could’ve released 3 or 4 or 5 studio albums in that time. But instead he spent the time jacking off to an album that hopefully will never see the light of day.

In November 1988 I turned 18, wrote my final school exams and discovered Guns n Roses. GnR coincided with my new found freedom and for the next five years I grew my hair long, drank, smoked and picked up babes with wild abandon.

Next month I turn 36, the hair that I have left is short, I have a wife and kid, a job and a mortgage.

Don’t get me wrong GnR have a special place in my heart and I still listen to them in my car. I’ll get the new album, just because it’s GnR, but I’m not expecting much from them or me.

however, given the current rock musical climate- ‘chinese democracy’ may actually come across as a gr8 album. compared 2 rest of rock releases this yr its gonna sound like musical genius. so it would b clever 2 release now- especially after the tour.

i dont think the reviews will hold up in yrs 2 come, when quality rock albums r made available.

rhcp, tool, evanescence, pearl jam (even afi) all released average or just above average releases this yr. audioslaves new lp was the best of a bad bunch. even audioslave’s number didnt have much depth

Slash??? Duff??? Izzy??? I saw velvet revolver in Vegas a couple of months ago mainly because I am a GnR fan…The concert was just ok…Slash was great but the show was just ok…Fast forward…I went to both GnR shows last month in Vegas not knowing what to expect…thinking much like some of the other comments on here…It’s not GnR without slash…after the first song I knew this was not TRUE.The band that Axl has put together is amazing period, yes it would be nice to see the original boys back together…but after seeing the first show I had no problem spending another $150 on tickets for the next night!!! The new stuff is incredible!!!

no question it will be great all the leaks have benn fantastic “better” “catcher in the rye”, “There was a time” are amazing and “irs” is a good straight ahead rock song and none of us have even heared axl’s supposed “big guns”

I’m absolutely shocked that people are really excited about this. It’s going to be a bloated, overworked, labored, overpersonalized MESS. You can see it coming a mile away. 15 years to make it….you can pretty much take out any raw punch that made Appetite so appealing in the first place. Great rock records, for the most part, aren’t LABORED. They just happen in a frenzy of creativity from artists at their peak. They don’t come from washed up lunatics spending 15 years in a studio working on an album. Just ask Brian Wilson and Syd Barrett.

The last rock & roll God alive. And the new album songs are straight, no frills good ol’ hard rocking’ songs. I love all of them. Axl is going to rule 2007. I’m going to the show in Portland on Dec 11 ) It’s gonna be mayhem!

On a side note, anyone else excited that Britney Spears is finally back in the studio? Another music genius finally working towards a new release.

I hope this album does come out on it’s new release date of November 21’st. I’ve been waiting for this album for a while now and I don’t think I’ll be disappointed. (I know that others will, like people who insist that Izzy and Slash created it all) But all in all, I love Guns N’ Roses and I’m not very satisfied with newer bands today. Older bands in the eighties and seventies get my attention, and that is why I am looking forward for the return of Guns N’ Roses

There’s a rumored concert date of Decmember 2nd at the Target Center and I hope I can attend.

hey matthew, it did not take 15 years to make this record, its been 15 years since their last original studio record…alot of the years in between were spent getting a new line up, and experimenting with new technologies, alot of the songs on the record were done years written years ago, so i dont think you have to worry about some of the songs seeming overworked, listen to the demos, they are awesome!!

Slash is a good guitar player, but he can only be awesome in combination with Guns ‘n Roses. Slash is way too cool for Velvet Revolver, which is an average band with average songs. In case you didn’t knew, Axl and Izzy did 99% of the songwriting on the old GNR albums. Slash ‘just’ did the solo’s. Some new songs like IRS and There was a time are awesome. The only thing that’s missing is Slash’ awesome blues playing. I’ve seen the new band live and they are good. It was the best concert i’ve seen and i’ve seen a lot of em. Don’t say they suck just cause Slash isn’t there anymore. Axl is way more important for GNR then Slash. Ever heard a performance of Sweet Child O Mine by Velvet Revolver? If you do, you’ll get my point.

Oh and those who don’t expect that much about the new album, you’ll be suprised. I’ve heard some of the demo’s and some songs live and it’s definitely good stuff. Especially if you compare it to the fake rock they play on MTV these days.

I care!!! I heard demos from the former albums, they rock in the exact same way as the demos from this one.. I was a little bit disappointed with Silkworms and Rhiad and beoudians (or something like this), and hope they will change dramatically.. But I think the others rock and gonna kick ass. I have faith in Axl. And still I don`t thnk we have heard the best yet.. But already at this moment I gonna be happy for the album after CD, if Izzy continues, and Axl and Izzy is getting to start making songs togheter again. That one will rock much more aggain. “GUNS N ROSES’ “Chinese Democracy” is delayed at least until 2007 after the band’s label admitted there was no November release schedule. Axl Rose had recently revealed his intention to get the $15m, ten-year-old project onto the shelves before the end of the year, and a press release for the Chinese Democracy Tour at the beginning of October 2006 also stated that “there are only 13 Tuesdays left between now and the end of the year” – dropping a hint that the album would be released on a Tuesday between October 3rd and December 19th.”

Just hurry up and get the album out before you die or something Axl. Geesh.

Technically i don’t really think that I would call Guns n Roses Guns n Roses anymore because axl is the only original member. I think this new album might be good, but not sounding like Guns n Roses.Axl has really gotten full of it, Im glad we have velvet revolver though, they kinda carry on some of the Guns n Roses sound. But i will probably get this new album just to see how it sounds

It seems to me that he knows it’s not going to sell like it would have 10 years ago and he is too scared to release a flop. That is really a shame because it would be nice to hear what an album that took over 10 years to make sounds like. It took Led Zeppelin less time to record their enitre collection. What a joke!

I agree.The leaked tracks all sound fantastic.They’re a cross between the old band,and a fresh band looking forward to the future.There’s not really any other band that sounds quite like the new GNR.

They could well be a fashionable band again,like they were in the late 80s/early 90s with the release of Appetite and Illusion.

But now i’m getting a little worried and not to mention annoyed.Although recording and mixing supposedly finished months ago there’s still no news on it coming out.Although they’re currently on tour,so i’ll give it a month after they finish the tour in Japan before it is released.If it’s not released by then,it’s never coming out.Or,they’ll just make some bullshit up about artwork or something.

As for Velvet Revolver…their first (and only album,so far) is atrocious;there’s probably 4 good songs on the album (5,if you have the tour edition disc).They just play completely average and bland rock.I’d take one leaked GNR tracks over 1000 Velvet Revolver albums anyday.

i just downloaded the full album from a website i won’t mention. I am listening to the 1st track, “Better” it’s called. it’s pretty good! lets see here… songs 2 and 3 sound like ballad’s. 4 is the title track, its rockin! 6, way too produced, 7 kicks ass! 8 & 9 live tracks? 10 poppy

After all this time, I have lost interest in GNR. So much time has passed and so much BS has been spread out that who really cares anymore??? I’ve moved on with different bands that deliver and just don’t “promise!”

I agree with Jeff. Guns N Roses lost their relevancy around 1993. Axl had a chance to rekindle the demand for Guns N Roses a decade ago, but he dropped the ball. I’m over it. I have no plans to waste my money on Chinese Democracy when (if) it’s released. Someone will just copy it for me anyway. So F you, Axl.

IF AXL WANTS TO TAKE AGES OVER RELEASING N ALBUM THEN HE CAN. PHIL LYNOTT ONCE SAID THAT AN ALBUM WHICH TAKES OVER TWO YEARS TO MAKE IS STAGNATING, BUT HERE THAT MAY NOT BE THE CASE. IT MUST BE HARD WHEN MEMBERS OF YOUR BAND KEEP LEAVING TO RELEASE AN ALBUM, AND THE LONGER IT TAKES, THE BETTER IT IS MORE LIKELY TO BE. BESIDES, IF THEY HAVE ALL THESE SONGS NOW THAT HAVEN’T BEEN RELEASED, THAT WILL MEAN MORE SONGS FOR THE NEXT CHINESE DEMOCRACY ALBUM AND IT CAN BE OUT QUICKER.

Please just bring the album, even half the album. Just something new for the fans who have been so patient and loyal to you Axl. I understand perfection, but 10 yrs is too long.

He doesn’t care about his fans. He knows that this is not going to sell like it would have if he put it out 10 years ago. I don’t care how good it is. He missed his chance and now he is too scared to release it because he knows it will be considered a flop. Just release the damn album so your fans who are not tired of your crap can buy it. It will enter the charts at number one but it will be off the charts in a few months after the release. Suck it up and move on!!!!!!!!!

You know, I’m not sure how to act. I’v been a fan since 1989 and I have no idea who Axl Roses is any more. I can’t tell you the last time I listened to a GNR CD but I can tell you that Velvet Revolver’s new CD has been in my player for the last 2 months. I’m going where the music is being made; sorry Axl but I’m just not that into you any more.

im a big GnR fan and i know what its like to feel impatient.its riddiculous the way hes carrying on,but ppl,that does not mean the album is shit,it may be great it might not be but still i wouldnt judge the contents of a closed box.wait for the album.and personally i think most of velvet revolvers stuff is shit but i still love slash!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JohnF haven’t you listend to all of the songs by now? I hope it’s a “new” album with tracks not all over the Internet on it but I don’t think so. I’ve heard all of the tracks and they already sound dated. They remind me of Filter’s first album.

The Blues and Chinese Democracy are as good as gnr have ever done however a few of the other tracks i have heard dont seem to be all that good although i have only heard them when seeing them live, cant wait for the album and it will be the first one i dont actually download for free in almost 10 years! only band i will still pay money to download, just dont let me down axl or ill cut ya nuts!!

I’m still a huge fan of their music to date, but for those calling this ‘Guns N’ Roses’ is crazy. This is just Axl using the band name, but there is no GN’R without Slash. He’s gonna lose money after he has to payout the 50 band members he’s had over the last 10 years who supposedly worked on this project.
