Pete Doherty Watch: A Poetry-Reading Drug Counselor?

10/4/06, 2:45 pm EST

THE LATEST: On Thursday Pete will be reading selections by one of his favorite poets, Siegfried Sassoon, on British television in honor of National Poetry Day. Pete reportedly gave colorful descriptions of how literature got him through his stint in prison, citing Emily Dickinson and Rimbaud as particularly helpful.

“[I read] Crime And Punishment!” he told The Guardian, explaining his literary choices in lockdown. “Except my cellmate at the time kept pulling his shorts down and getting his knob out, and going, ‘Is this normal, Pete?’ And I’m trying to read.” That must have been . . . distracting?

Maybe these little anecdotes will serve Pete well if he takes a job as drug counselor at the Priory clinic, which he left, oh you know, nine days ago. Apparently the counselors on staff were particularly impressed with Pete’s willingness to admit he has a problem. We’re hoping it takes more than a well-timed display of honesty to qualify one for this kind of job, but whatever. He does have a lot of fans to care for back at the clinic.

I love Pete. I hope things work out and he’s back on top again. Rock on!

I don’t care at all about this wanker…i am totally into british culture, but this guy is a disgrace to pop music and himself. Go O.D. already, will ya?

Say, you know what would go really nice with this poetry? Let’s take a little walk to the bathroom…

No talent? Your unintelligent and prejudiced ass should be the one dead. Every review I’ve ever read praised Pete and/or the Libertines. All walks of life have alcoholism/addiction problems, not excluding celebrities.

elizabeth goodman’s constant bashing of pete shows her utter lack of musical knowledge. Pete Doherty is by far one of the most talented musicians around.

i love him he has so much talent and is the hottest man alive and i dont think its fare that people make fun of him and like have a countup thing to days since hes been out of rehab. like honselty thats not nice so aarrrrrgg

How could you wish someone to die ? Thats absurd. If you don’t like the talented man, don’t comment. I saw him play last night at Brixton and it was amazing. Clean and tight. Give him a chance, aye ?

Kelly Maynard | 10/6/2006, 5:20 am EST

I was at Brixton last night too, and he did look amazing. I’ve seen him live a few times before but last night he really was on top form. Does slagging people off on the internet make you feel better? If it does, then go ahead; its not as if he’s going to see it. And to be honest he wouldn’t care. Brixton Adademy holds about 4000 people, and EVERY one of them was screaming along to EVERY word when he played ‘Time for Heros’. He has some of the most dedicated fans around. So he must be doing something right eh?

No talent you say? Aren’t you the rock and roll liberal. Pete Docherty is without doubt one of the greatest word smiths of the last twenty years. The fact that he hasn’t sucked corporate american **** like every other band out there does not make him an enemy of the state. He does things his own way, on his own terms, and it should be aplauded. As for drugs – Kobain, Bowie, Chili peppers, beatles, stones. Name me a band that has not been smashed. Its totally hypocritical to start pointing a finger at him when many of the greatest acts of all time were off their head and bearing in mind that half the planet smashes drugs every weekend. You’re a nonse, a bigot and presumably deaf in both ears.

Roliing Stone can fuck off!
Your wishes of this artist dying a slow death for your bullshit ratings isn’t going to happen. I assume you know that Pete is the second coming of Christ! Stupid fucks!

Hes a person trying to beat an addiction and putting asside the fact hes famous have any of us had an addiction to a drug like crack i doubt it! It must be so difficult to get of a drug like that its a vicious circle. If this teaches us anything its spare a moment for the man in the street whos got no money or hope of ever getting clean! Hes a man with allot of talent no doubt about it ad wish hime well in his recovery!

siki | 10/10/2006, 11:55 am EST

doherty is increadibly talented, but accomplishment requires much more than talent. he used to be precocious but now is well beyond where he could have been. he was profound for his years, now is more like a simpleton.

Boris | 10/11/2006, 5:35 am EST

He’s not talented. He just got more press than was otherwise warrented in NME at a time when no-one else was smashed a lot and so headlines were few and far between. Now every no-hoper in town thinks he’s the messiah. His music is appalling. His start is fading so fast they’ll need the Hubble telescope to spot it shortly.
