Till Death Do Us Party: A Funeral Mixtape

10/3/06, 6:57 pm EST

Wow, you guys are really morbid. When we asked you what song you wanted played at your funeral, you told us … and then some. The whole thing is so goth we feel the need to run out after work and get a black manicure. Anyway, back to you. To thank you for your generosity, we’ve put together a handy little mixtape using the best of your submissions. Listen to it here. And don’t go getting any silly ideas.

  • “Not Dark Yet” – Bob Dylan
  • “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” – The Pogues
  • “Free Bird” – Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • “Funeral Song” – Sleater-Kinney
  • “Hurt” – Johnny Cash
  • “‘Till I Die” – Beach Boys
  • “Live Forever” – Oasis
  • “Redemption Song” – Bob Marley
  • “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” – Pink Floyd
  • “Come On Up to the House” – Tom Waits

The “Adore” album from Smashing Pumpkins (back in ‘98)–very underrated; it’s all about loss… It totally helped me when I was in high school and fell out of love the first time! Simply gorgeous record.

I agree with Skillamang; the first 10 spots on the RS top 500 albums should all be 2Pac albums! THEN you can take the moldy Beetles or that croaking lunatic Bob Dylan. 2Pac OWNS those “bustas”! (that’s what we in the rap world call people we don’t like) Even though they came out decades before him, I think the classic artists of the 60’s were influenced by 2Pac’s coming presence. Consider: The White Album was a double album, and 2Pac released like 6 of them. The Beetles forsaw 2Pac’s greatness; there is really no other explanation. By the way, 2Pac also is better than Shakespeare and Ghandi and better than oxygen.

I can’t believe nobody thought of “Long Road”. You could go with the Pearl Jam/Neil Young version on the Merkin Ball single, but I prefer the unedited version on the “Dead Man Walking” sountrack that Eddie Vedder performs with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
