Best Rock Muses Ever

10/2/06, 9:34 am EST

Sigh. Behind many a great rock song is a great rock muse, and the best in the business have worked their magic on more than one smitten rocker boy. The list of muse-ish humans who’ve inspired artists to music-making greatness is long but here are a few of our favorites to get you started. Who would you add? (Bonus points for arguing about who inspired who.)

  • Nico
  • Winona Ryder
  • Joni Mitchell
  • Anita Pallenberg
  • Marianne Faithful
  • Yoko Ono
  • Edie Sedgwick
  • Angie Bowie
  • Rebecca De Mornay
  • Evan Dando
  • Kate Moss
  • Pattie Boyd
  • Bianca Jagger

Was Nico really a muse? Wasn’t she really just a band member? Maybe Warhol was smitten, but he didn’t play any music.

The most glaring omission from this list is Sara Dylan. She inspired some of Dylan’s greatest love songs and one of the greatest breakup albums of all time (Blood on the Tracks). Once they broke up at the end of the 70’s he lost his inspiration and will to put out his great material or even record.

kudos for recognizing de mornay and her influence on leonard cohen, although God knows why he was smitten with a two-bit actress like her.

Britney Spears. All of Timberlake’s love songs post-Brit are about her, not that Diaz chick.

Patti D'Arbanville | 10/2/2006, 2:00 pm EST

Cat Stevens wrote a song about me. It sucked. Don Johnson’s “Heartbeat” is about me too!

Mackenzie Phillips | 10/2/2006, 2:01 pm EST

Don’t forget me! Mick wrote a song about me except I forgot which one. Rod wrote “Hot Legs” for me. My sister was in Wilson Phillips but I wasn’t.

Eddie Van Halen | 10/2/2006, 2:03 pm EST

I gotta tell ya, dude… the first time I played “Eruption,” it was like Valerie Bertinelli was playing the strings of my heart.

Eric W,
Nico inspired Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan to write songs, but you’re right, putting her in this category sort of downplays her role as a musician, and…

Um, Nico,
You came up with the chorus for “I’ll be Your Mirror” but you were in the band, so I don’t know how muse-esque that is. And “Femme Fatale” is actually about Edie Sedgwick, not you, which is actualy good news.

But I think you’re the inspiration for The Caroline character from Lou Reed’s Berlin album, the “Germanic Queen” with a heart as cold as “Alaska” who “put her fist through a window pane.” Not great…

Mark | 10/2/2006, 4:38 pm EST

Rosanne Arquette certainly belongs on that list, inspriting artists from Toto to Peter Gabriel.

Nico | 10/2/2006, 5:32 pm EST

Achtung, baby, but I DID inspire Femme Fatale, and all those Jackson Browne songs, and Mr. Big’s “Too Be With You,” and Jimi’s solo in “Captain Coconut.” Edie Sedgvick can blow me.

Rebecca de Mornay | 10/2/2006, 5:34 pm EST

“Two bit actress”? I guess SOMEBODY didn’t notice how AWESOME I was in “And God Created Woman ‘88.” Leonard was lucky I inspired him to write “Anthem,” but he’s still bitter he didn’t get to do the theme for “The Hand that Rocks The Cradle.”

Sean | 10/2/2006, 5:35 pm EST

Janis Joplin- See Chelsea Hotel No. 2

Nico | 10/2/2006, 5:43 pm EST

Billy Shears | 10/2/2006, 6:21 pm EST

Nobody’s going to mention Linda Eastman McCartney????

KENNY C. VAIL | 10/2/2006, 7:26 pm EST

i have gotten a lot of inspiration from chrissie hynde…she is my musical muse.

sam | 10/2/2006, 8:30 pm EST

Linda Eastman McCartney doesn’t count, because she inspired Paul to form Wings.

JBK (Surf City Sounds Plus) | 10/3/2006, 5:14 pm EST

I am shocked, shocked to discover the incomprehensible lack of mention of the young Grace Slick?!? Hmmmmm?

Joan Baez

smartguy | 11/6/2006, 5:33 pm EST

Linda McCartney slept with Tim Buckley before she found Paul.

Amanda S | 12/7/2006, 3:53 pm EST

Does anyone remember Patti Boyd ? She was one of the biggest muse of the past century. She inspired Eric Clapton and George Harrison to write many of their masterpieces. “Something”, “For You Blue”, and “I Need You” were written by Harrison. Clapton wrote for her “Wonderful Tonight”, “Pretty Blue Eyes”,”Golden Ring”, Pretty Girl” and “”Never Make You Cry”. That is 7 songs by two of the most talented musicians written for ONE very inspirational woman.

Lucy in the sky | 10/7/2007, 4:51 pm EST

Linda may have inspired Wings, but she inspired Paul to write “My Love” for her, “Linda” was a song in the ’40s for her, and Paul dedicated many songs to her. So before you say Linda wasn’t a muse, learn you facts first.

Lucy in the sky | 10/7/2007, 4:53 pm EST

I do find Yoko a muse, but Pattie had more songs for her; both George and Eric. Anita and Marianne were also great muses for Mick and Keith/Brian.
