In High Fidelity Rob Gordon makes his “songs at my funeral list,” admitting that he’s “always had this fantasy that some beautiful, tearful woman would insist on ‘You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me’ by Gladys Knight.” He’s not the only one to have thought about this, as it turns out 79 percent of people polled by the Bereavement Register (whatever that is) in the U.K. have made similar lists, and James Blunt has come to mind more than any other artist.
In addition to landing at Number Four (in between queue jumpers and traffic wardens) on a British list of the 100 Most Annoying Things, James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover” is officially the single hottest funeral track in all of the U.K. This is particularly impressive considering that Blunt beat out Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” one of the single most cloyingly emotive songs ever recorded, to secure the slot. As long as we’re here: What would you like played at your funeral?
