James Blunt: Perfect Funeral Soundtrack

10/2/06, 11:58 am EST

James BluntIn High Fidelity Rob Gordon makes his “songs at my funeral list,” admitting that he’s “always had this fantasy that some beautiful, tearful woman would insist on ‘You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me’ by Gladys Knight.” He’s not the only one to have thought about this, as it turns out 79 percent of people polled by the Bereavement Register (whatever that is) in the U.K. have made similar lists, and James Blunt has come to mind more than any other artist.

In addition to landing at Number Four (in between queue jumpers and traffic wardens) on a British list of the 100 Most Annoying Things, James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover” is officially the single hottest funeral track in all of the U.K. This is particularly impressive considering that Blunt beat out Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” one of the single most cloyingly emotive songs ever recorded, to secure the slot. As long as we’re here: What would you like played at your funeral?

I would have to say “The Long and Winding Road” by The Beatles. One of the best songs out there, bar none. “Oceans” by Pearl Jam is also a really cool, mellow song that I love.

While I think “Find the River” by REM is about the most beautiful pop(?) song I’ve ever heard….is nobody here aware of a song by the The titled “Love is Stronger than Death”? EASILY the most moving rock/pop/funeral song.
Even though I hope not to die.

Depends on what mood I’m in at the point of my death. If I die a happy man, I’ll take Peter Gabriel’s “Here Comes the Flood” (the 1991 piano version). If I die angry and bitter, my pick would be Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”.
Other favorites:
Tom Waits – “I’m Still Here”
Leonard Cohen – “Last Year’s Man”
Porcupine Tree – “Collapse the Light into Earth”
