George Michael: A Timeline of Sin (And Other Stuff)

10/2/06, 6:53 pm EST

After news broke this morning of George Michael’s public humiliation #7349, we laughed unapologetically then got confused. How many times has he been arrested for falling asleep stoned in his car again? What about the sex thing? How often has he been busted fornicating-or-something in bushes around the world? While we can’t answer any of these questions definitively, we thought it might be helpful to put together a little chronology that could help us keep all of his sex and drug infractions in order in our heads. If he keeps getting busted we’re gonna have to break out the index cards.

April 7, 1998: George Michael is arrested for “engaging in a lewd act” in a public bathroom in Beverly Hills. Anyone who didn’t know he was gay gets the memo.

November 2005: Michael and his partner — a former cheerleader named Kenny Goss — open the Goss Gallery in Dallas earlier this year and in late November the pair begin to discuss seeking a Civil Partnership in the UK. Ongoing scandals keep that from happening.

February 26, 2006: Michael is arrested for allegedly possessing Class C drugs after he’s found slumped over the steering wheel of his Mercedes near Hyde Park Corner in London. He later describes the incident as his “own stupid fault, as usual.”

May 2006: George Michael apparently has some problems operating his Range Rover — he allegedly bashed into three cars on his way somewhere. Then, again with the slumped-over-the-wheel thing. This time he’s found catching some (chemically induced?) Z’s while stopped at traffic lights in London.

September 2006: George Michael involves himself in a scandal we can get behind when he features a giant figure of President George Bush in a compromising position onstage at a show in Barcelona.

A campaign for “I did drugs – and the fucked up my career.”

Stephanie Kjaerbaek | 10/3/2006, 1:44 am EST

Well, perhaps if he was getting enough at home…I guess the chearleeder doesn’t shake his pink pompoms anymore.

DaHarder | 10/3/2006, 2:41 am EST

Scandal… Shmandal…

He still writes extraordinarily great pop music, and sings in a voice that remains as fluid and pure as ever…

Xavier | 10/3/2006, 2:53 am EST

you shouldn’t pick on people who make such lovely music

Don R. | 10/3/2006, 5:37 am EST

He is still your father figure it out.

jose jimenez | 10/3/2006, 6:46 am EST

he is done it, wore the T-shirt and still makes headlines. well done George. You still the Best

cold187 | 10/3/2006, 8:46 am EST

He’s growing old pretty well and some provocation doesn’t hurt that much

Andy | 10/3/2006, 11:13 am EST

What a sick, sick, disturbed man.

Kiru | 10/3/2006, 11:30 am EST

His partner did NOT call of their wedding…get ur facts straight….

Knobby | 10/3/2006, 11:33 am EST

Andy: I’m sure you live your life as Jesus, don’t you?

As for the scandals. “Scandals”. Fact; “Ordinary” people have sex outdoors, “ordinary” people do drugs – George just happens to be interesting to enough people that it makes the news. He hasn’t hurt anyone, nobody died – get over it.

Remarkable | 10/3/2006, 11:36 am EST

Honestly – this is a laughable piece of journalism. You need to learn check your facts from original sources, rather than re-printing lies that orginated in the gutter press. While some of what you write is true, much the above didn’t actually happen – it’s simply an invention of the taboild press. Legal action is ongoing in relating to a number of these matters.

I guess you won’t print this comment, because I suspect you’re not interested in the truth. Mediocrity is so dull – I do hope you learn how to write properly researched articles at some point in the future.

Knobby | 10/3/2006, 11:39 am EST

Agreed, Remarkable. I, for one, thought that the Rolling Stone was known for quality journalism. Guess I was wrong.

Evelyn | 10/3/2006, 11:41 am EST

Hey Billboard…

You might wanna remove that “caught having sex with a pot-bellied van driver in London’s Hampstead Heath” mention. You wouldn’t want to be sued right along side all those UK rags.

So having Sex Outdoors and spoking pot regularly classifies someone as a sinner…. Lord know’s what that makes me!

Jake | 10/3/2006, 11:55 am EST

Rolling Stone is as empty as every piece of non-music on the radio nowadays…and that fact isn’t newsworthy either, as the magazine doesn’t count for much anymore.

Andy | 10/3/2006, 11:59 am EST

“Andy: I’m sure you live your life as Jesus, don’t you?”

LOL…is that the best you can do? Look, I’m not saying I’m perfect, but George Michael is obviously a disturbed man bent on self destruction. I’m not trying to pass judgment on the guy. I think he needs help. Its sad, thats all.

Remarkable | 10/3/2006, 12:39 pm EST

Andy said: “George Michael is obviously a disturbed man bent on self destruction.”

LOL! You know George, do you? No, I thought not. Sounds like you need to learn to distinguish drivel written by so-called journalists from fact.

Here’s some facts for you. George Michael is currently on a 50-date sell-out European Tour. Tickets for the tour may have been the fastest selling of any tour by any act in the history of music. Of course, he will earn millions of dollars from this tour. Every album he releases sells by the million, after 25 years in the music industry. His next album will be released in November.

What have *you* achieved this year, I wonder? Or in your entire life? That’s right! Nothing at all! Well done you! Why not take a look at the failure that is your own life, and focus on that; rather than spending your time passing your misguided judgements on others.

Killa | 10/3/2006, 1:07 pm EST

George Michael, along with Robbie Williams, are the two greatest frontmen going at the moment. Scott Weiland is good but his time seeks to have passed.

It’s too bad that the US can’t produce any worthy contendors for this crown.

Love cup | 10/3/2006, 1:55 pm EST

Cool,Thank you. Gm.

jacko | 10/3/2006, 2:09 pm EST

….poor limp bizkit

chris | 10/3/2006, 2:19 pm EST

of course, now it makes sense. how else would he relate anything else. He probably envies the dog.

Andy | 10/3/2006, 2:29 pm EST

“You know George, do you? No, I thought not. Sounds like you need to learn to distinguish drivel written by so-called journalists from fact.”

So, then, all those reports of him passing out in his car due to drug use and soliciting anonymous sex in public parks is all made up? Can you confirm that? He’s admitted to all of it. Those are not the actions of a healthy individual. And YOU protest too much.

Remarkable | 10/3/2006, 3:49 pm EST

“all those reports of him passing out in his car due to drug use and soliciting anonymous sex in public parks is all made up? Can you confirm that?”

Yes, I can 100% confirm that. For the record, George Michael has NOT admitted to passing out in his car due to drug use, and he has not admitted to even having met “van driver”

Andy | 10/3/2006, 6:06 pm EST

“Yes, I can 100% confirm that. For the record, George Michael has NOT admitted to passing out in his car due to drug use, and he has not admitted to even having met “van driver””

Then, where’s the confirmation? I guess the cops were lying all those times? He HAS confessed(after being repeatedly caught) to trolling for illicit and anonymous sex in public parks…hardly normal, or healthy behavior. Can you provide a link or something? Your assertion is NOT proof…

chappy | 10/3/2006, 8:05 pm EST

as long as George is not hurting anyone, other than the gentle pure minds in Rolling Stone, who gives a rats arse what he does. He is a sincere loving man and through his song comes healing for humanity. Obviously this recognition is beyond minds blocked by political and social correctness.

Laurens from Indonesia | 10/4/2006, 12:21 am EST

He wrote this cool Xmas song in the 80s. Where is Slash and Axl man.

Remarkable | 10/4/2006, 1:20 am EST

“I guess the cops were lying all those times?”

The police don’t lie about this. The newspapers do. You will notice that the police have always given George Michael the all-clear, despite being required to investigate the allegations made by the press. There have been NO prosecutions for driving under the influence of either alcohol of drugs. In fact, there have been NO driving-related prosecutions at all.

The only thing that has happened is that the police have “cautioned” him for possession of small amounts of cannabis. Are you really trying to tell me that you think that everyone who smokes cannabis has some kind of serious drug problem? The law doesn’t agree with you – that’s why the decision has been made to only give “cautions” for cannabis possession. That is, there are no prosecutions for this – it is not regarded as a serious matter by the government, or by society as a whole. You might disapprove of people that use cannabis. But that doesn’t make it “abnormal” or “unhealthy”. You’re in the minority if you think smoking a spliff is a big deal.

As for the sex stuff. The police in the UK have taken no interest at all in George Michael’s sex-life. They don’t regard his behaviour as in any way “illicit”. Of course, George Michael has said that he goes cruising – as do many, many gay men. Lots of people do it – it is absolutely “normal” and “healthy” behaviour. I’m sorry to break it to you Andy, but it is quite normal for people to want to have sex with different people. Both straight and gay people do this all the time.

You might not like the fact that George Michael likes having sex. And you might disapprove of him taking different sexual partners. But just because you disapprove, doesn’t make him “abnormal” or “unhealthy”.

NANA | 10/4/2006, 9:25 am EST

If this race of humans spent more time looking within to improve ourselves and think more positive of each other this world might not be on the brink of disaster. After all is said and done we have each for support? Or do we.

wee nasty | 10/4/2006, 11:47 am EST

iF WANTS TO TAKE IT UP THE HOOP AND SMOKE A ROCKET AT THE SAME TIME GOOD LUCK TO HIM

yogger | 10/4/2006, 9:51 pm EST

The police stops me and finds a bottle of wine in the car. The tabloid prints it as ”drunken driving“. Clever conjunction, ay? Erm, no. So-called ‘news’ passes the asses, as we say.

Astounding | 10/5/2006, 2:23 am EST

Elizabeth Goodman, you poor thing. What is it that makes you think others want to “keep all of his sex and drug infractions in order in our heads.” ? speak for yourself!
Forget about George’s infractions and make index of things you could write about that are meaningful to the world. You are wasting your position!
Gosh, if too many others think like you we really are in trouble.
Same goes for you Andy.

SuperFansdeGeorgeMichael | 10/7/2006, 4:07 am EST

I feel trememdous shame on being a longtime subscriber of RollingStone Magazine. The Last time you guys show any real interest in George Michael’s career was during his Faith era. Don’t forget this artist has sold more than 85 MILLON Records World Wide!! He’s had excellent records AFTER his Faith era. Its unfortunate RS Magazine chooses when to cover him and when NOT to. While its true his been mentioned on a couple of issues since he’s on the cover of your magazine, its been hardly positive or of great interest in terms of quality journalism!
