Brandon Flowers Defends His Moustache, Tells Thom Yorke What To Do

9/25/06, 12:40 pm EST

Brandon Flowers Thom Yorke

Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant is very concerned about Brandon Flowers. “I’m worried, – and I hope he’s reading this – that he’s grown a beard” the rocker told the Guardian. “It means he’s saying, “I’m not pop. I mean more than that.” But in spite of the Killers’ new Back To The Future Part III look, Flowers claims his band is still pop-centric. “I do feel like we’re definitely still pop. And we’ve never been ashamed of that. This is just a phase. I’ve never been able to grow a moustache before! I’m upset that Neil doesn’t like it!”

While congratulations are apparently in order for Flowers’ newly acquired facial-hair sprouting skills, we think Tennant’s comments injured the officially post-pubescent rocker more than he’s letting on. What else explains his need to pick a fight with Thom Yorke. “He should feel grateful that’s he’s [been] given the gift to write pop songs–which he needs to write again,” Flowers dictates. Projection is some tricky shit.

Update: For more Killers-related goodness, check out our review of the band’s show last Friday at New York City’s Webster Hall.

This little fucker (Flowers) can spew all the bullshit he wants when it comes to some things (”We’ve made the best album in 20 years”), but he needs to shut his little mouth when it comes to Thom Yorke and anything Radiohead related. You can’t criticize Radiohead, especially if you blow ass.

In Denver | 9/25/2006, 1:14 pm EST

Wow, Brandon Flowers citicizing Thom Yorke. What were Thom and Radiohead doing making ground-breaking, original, politically relevant, emotional, and irresistibly listenable music that no other band has come close to topping for the past 10 years. Yeah, you’re right Brandon, they should have stuck with the pop oriented ‘Creep’ formula that every other band was using instead of single-handedly changing the shape of rock music.

will | 9/25/2006, 1:17 pm EST

nobody can criticize radiohead

Kate | 9/25/2006, 1:33 pm EST

…with [his] opinion which is of no consequence at all…

mr roboto | 9/25/2006, 2:04 pm EST

the Pet Shop Boys are twaddle.

Viva la Yorke!

A | 9/25/2006, 2:34 pm EST

Don’t overrate Radiohead’s music. Irresistibly listenable? They are averaging less then 500,000 sold copies an album. No one is buying that crap. The concert tickets sell because it is an “event” that everyone wants to say they went to and “experienced.” There is nothing groundbreaking about Radiohead. Just a band that thinks they are more relevant than everybody else because they record grating electronic messy soundscapes with out-of-tune vocals that is supposed to be “artistic”. Please….. Roger Waters and Pink Floyd accomplished what Thom York and crew would so love to 30+ years ago.

McGuire | 9/25/2006, 2:41 pm EST

Radiohead died after OK Computer.

Matt | 9/25/2006, 2:43 pm EST

Flowers is quickly becoming the most annoying guy in music.

tvotrfan | 9/25/2006, 2:56 pm EST

This is for “A”. When in the hell did selling over 500,000 copies of a CD make something good?? With that logic, you probably think Linkin Park, Britany Spears, and Rascall Flatts are the best artists out in music right now, since they sell the most. Ever heard of marketing and advertising? It was devised so suckers like you coudl and would think number of copies sold = success. Pink Floyd is one of the best bands ever, how that relates to Radiohead being one of the best bands ever as well makes no sense at all.

nick | 9/25/2006, 3:11 pm EST

In all reality this guy Flowers probably has a good deal of respect for Yorke and would like to achieve the same integrity that Radiohead has had in its music over the last decade. He may feel at times that he has acheived a level of superority with his band’s recent success and may let out these off handed remarks, which may be truthful to his opinions but not his spirit. I am sure he perfers Yorke writing pop songs, but doesn’t mean to critizise his other work.

Beelay | 9/25/2006, 3:30 pm EST

Perhaps “A” should stick to Nickelback and Good Charlotte if he wants something repetitive, predictable and familiar.

Love | 9/25/2006, 3:34 pm EST

Brandon Flowers talkin smack to Thom Yorke is like hamburger talkin smack to steak.

A | 9/25/2006, 3:36 pm EST

tvotrfan, if the music is “irresistibly listenable” then it would sell way more than it does. That is the point. Are Linkin Park and Brittany the only artists to sell millions? Believe it or not, legitimate artists with tremendous musical talent also sell boatloads of albums. Sales aren’t the issue. Love’s Forever Changes never sold a lot and it is obviously one the greatest works ever recorded. Paul Butterfield’s East-West never moved tons of units, but it is still highly regarded. But face it, Radiohead doesn’t sell because they suck, their music is not listenable. It is cultural. Music isn’t only good when it takes a lot of work to get through the album. Have fun getting down toe Kid A.

Justin | 9/25/2006, 3:48 pm EST

A suckes. Kid A rocks!

A | 9/25/2006, 3:55 pm EST

Okay, you guys are right. Radiohead is good.

tvotrfan | 9/25/2006, 3:58 pm EST

A, if you can’t get down to The National Anthem, Optimistic, or Idioteque, you must not have much rhythm. Have you even heard Kid A all the way through?? And bringing up sales in a debate about “good” music makes no sense, I don’t care what point you were trying to make.

quin | 9/25/2006, 3:59 pm EST

A- I’m assuming that comments regarding Love and Butterfield as some of the “greatest works ever” and “highly regarded” are based off of critical acclaim and not sales. By the same standard, all of Radiohead’s albums post Pablo Honey would fall under those same descriptions. There are some albums that I would consider as being “work” to get through. Kid A is certainly not one of them. Idioteque- GET DOWN

Ryan | 9/25/2006, 4:12 pm EST

says “A”-

“Radiohead doesn’t sell because they suck, their music is not listenable.”

Uhh–
Pablo Honey – Platinum
The Bends – Platinum
OK Computer – Platinum
Kid A – Platinum
Amnesiac – Gold
Hail to the Thief – Gold

That said, not all of us equate the quality of the art with the success on the commerce side.

Have fun “getting down” to Miles Davis or Beethovan…a couple of talentles hacks like Radiohead…

Eric | 9/25/2006, 4:13 pm EST

Thom Yorke just made a better album alone with his laptop then the killers second album will be. Radiohead started out with pop and ascended to what they are now and I have no faith whatsoever that the Killers will make a similar ascention. I am sure Brandon Flowers wasn’t trying to start shit and it was probably taken out of context but that is the risk you run when you are a young hotshot and you feel your opinion matters enough to even mention Thom Yorke’s name in an interview.

Migraine Boy | 9/25/2006, 4:14 pm EST

What an asshole! You need to write some good songs first and maybe, juuuuuust maybe you can talk about Thom Yorke. In the meantime, all of you who can’t get down to Kid A, you’ve got some serious problems!

Aaron D. | 9/25/2006, 4:18 pm EST

First, I don’t really care for Radiohead or Thom Yorke, but I can recognize their talent. That said, Brandon Flowers has no place to criticize any other artist when his band calls imitating Springsteen “one of the best albums in 20 years.”

seattle | 9/25/2006, 4:19 pm EST

When the new Radiohead comes out I will buy it because I will be interested to see where they go and I want to support their artistic endeavours, however I have no interest in purchasing the new Killers. I imagine this will be the situation for a lot of people. That should been Flower’s concern.

Hernandez | 9/25/2006, 4:30 pm EST

Brandon Who?

Vegas | 9/25/2006, 4:32 pm EST

The Killers, though completely out of line probably did not mean to attack Radiohead. Brandon Flowers obviously does not know the music industry, he has proposed verbal attacks on many bands for no reason. For Brandon to tell Radiohead what kind of music to put out is comical. Radiohead has helped mold rock music today. The Killers merely took an 80’s sound and added a fresh Brittish spin to it. They are hardly original in that respect, and therefore have no right to criticize a band that has put out multiple intelligent records.

proud american | 9/25/2006, 4:41 pm EST

Radiohead don’t suck, Oasis does!

WBaggins | 9/25/2006, 4:52 pm EST

Music is a boundless creative process. Identitifying with a genre or era does not legitimize it. Radiohead should, in the least, be respected for maintaining/developing their older sound while exploring contrasting sounds. Is the artist achieving what they wish to achieve? That is the question. Also, regarding alleged “out-of-tune vocals”: that, my friend, is called, “Phrasing.” That is how your popular vocalists project their personalities.

Just a thought | 9/25/2006, 5:15 pm EST

Fitting that a band who worships Oasis would take on the same kind of unwarranted swagger to generate hype surrounding an undoubtedly bad album.

jebeal | 9/25/2006, 5:20 pm EST

Let’s not lose fact of something here, kids–this should not be a forum for defending Thom Yorke or Radiohead, who don’t need to be defended because the work speaks for itself. This is about a guy from a band with all the staying power of a piece of Bubblicious (and twice the calories) pointing the finger at someone else’s “art” and bemoaning it’s lack of “pop songs.” Some pop songs last forever. I bought the Killers’ first album–say hello to the new Mr. Mister, more self-important sh!ts. Get over yourself, Mr. Flowers, please…For all of us. Hootie and the Blowfish are waving you toward the light.

Anonymous | 9/25/2006, 6:04 pm EST

Guess what ? Not everyone loves Radiohead!!! I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about Radiohead and while I don’t think that Mr. Flowers’ comment was correct, I don’t care to make Mr. Yorke out to be some sort of demigod. I love music and have, on occasion, listened to Radiohead, but some of those under, what 30? don’t really connect with Radiohead’s music or Thom Yorke’s insufferable The Eraser…

Sean | 9/25/2006, 6:45 pm EST

I’m 16. Thom Yorke is and effing genius. What Flowers should have said is Yorke’s been given the ability to write incredible music, and he should continue to.

…If he actually SPOKE AT ALL. God this guy doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut. First its “our next album is gonna be one of the best in the last 20 years” and now this… learn some humility, man.

In Denver | 9/25/2006, 6:47 pm EST

I am really looking forward to Whitney Houston’s new project.

Justin | 9/25/2006, 6:51 pm EST

And not only does Kid A rock, but Thom is one hottie.

Ben | 9/25/2006, 6:54 pm EST

Radiohead is okay. Not great, but they have some cool tunes. The Killers right better singles. Some here may not give any credit or respect towards musicians that write great singles, but it isn’t like Thom Yorke has written anything great lately.

dkerbyi | 9/25/2006, 7:01 pm EST

I dont know why all you guys let this “a” fuckhead get to you. We all know how radiohead will be looked upon in thirty years…and little synth-pop band “the killers”…wont be even in the same breath…they will be forgotten with all the other trash of our time…who the hell would even want to listen to the killers…when there is new order to listen to?? Or even the pet shop boys for that matter?? Fuck Brandon Flowers.

DT | 9/25/2006, 7:11 pm EST

Everything that Radiohead has done since OK Computer has been pure wankery, even OK Computer was bordering on pretensious, but they pulled it off and made it listenable. I lost interest in everything since then before i even got to the record store, but the Eraser is good

The Killers RIP | 9/25/2006, 7:17 pm EST

First of all, people go to Radiohead shows because they’re incredible live. Ask anyone who attended Bonnaroo this year. Another thing, the Killers can’t write the best album in 20 years since they just rip on other bands. Listen to Jealousy and then go listen to a band called Placebo (Special K)….same chorus almost, same phrasing, same melody line. I could point out several more songs like this. The last 20 yrs brought us Nevermind, OK Computer, Funeral (the arcade fire), pavement, public enemy, nwa, depeche mode, born to run and many others. Mr. Flowers needs to first officially beat the sophomore jinx before he talks shit. Oh, and learn to write your OWN music. Get an identity.
And the fact Radiohead is a target is like a talking trash about Outkast or some other band who has equated artistic intergrity, doing things differently than I am sure their labels would have wanted and still sold respectable sales. That kind of partnership between art and sales is pretty rare and should be appreciated if not from a musician ’s POV but at least a industry douche-kissing douche bag like Brandon.

Rich | 9/25/2006, 7:20 pm EST

I’d kind of like to see Radiohead get back to earlier “Pablo Honey” “The Bends” kind of sound. When Radiohead rocks, I mean they really fu*king rock!!! They leave ‘em all in their wake. I for one hope Mr. Flower’s comments coax Radiohead in to showing all these motherfu*kers what they can do.

PinkPick | 9/25/2006, 7:22 pm EST

Instead of growing a moustache, he should’ve changed his last name. Flowers… come on how Rock N Roll is that even for self-proclaimed “pop” musician.

His aspiration to make the Killers seem better than they actually are is somewhat admirable. But they won’t be remembered as one of the greats.

Migraine Boy | 9/25/2006, 7:38 pm EST

Forget Pablo Honey, Kid A is where it is at. That album rocks and is brilliant in every way. ‘In Denver’, Whitney Houston is releasing a new album?

Susan | 9/25/2006, 7:44 pm EST

As Justin said, Thom is one hottie. Radiohead is the best. Just beautiful music.

WB | 9/25/2006, 8:08 pm EST

Totally overrated band. Killers a pop band, nothing more and nothing less. But there is nothing melodic or interesting about Radiohead. They rocked on parts of The Bends, but since they have gotten lost in electronic haze. York can’t hold a tune. Underworld does electronica better, there is nothing groundbreaking about Radiohead’s ‘experimental’ studio work. Get over it guys, they just aren’t that good.

In Denver | 9/25/2006, 8:20 pm EST

Yes, Whitney is releasing a new project with Clive Davis helming the project. Whitney is a stunning beauty and a phenominal talent. I’m very happy the her drug fueled years are behind her now. Some people here may think it is odd that I like Thom Yorke and also Whitney, but that is there problem. They have nothing to do with each other. Radiohead is amazing, but so is Whitney.

Migraine Boy | 9/25/2006, 8:24 pm EST

I have always been somewhat of a Whitney Houston fan too. She is an incredible songwriter. Imagine her and Thom doing a duet together???

Justin | 9/25/2006, 8:26 pm EST

Well, she is not hotter than Thom Yorke. And Flowers isn’t hot at all.

Hank | 9/25/2006, 8:28 pm EST

Radiohead lost it after OK Computer. But this dude from The Killers is nuts for even bringing up Thom Yorke. He isn’t in the same league as Yorke.

Beelay | 9/25/2006, 8:34 pm EST

Is it just me or would Chris Martin and Thom Yorke make a pretty cool album together? Whitney Houston?

SheLike | 9/25/2006, 8:42 pm EST

Thom Yorke is genius.

Timo | 9/25/2006, 8:44 pm EST

1- It’s easy to rip Flowers by just reading his quote in print. He could’ve said it half-heartedly, or pleadingly, or otherwise and that would change the entire understanding. Plus- he never said Thom or RH was bad- he probably just wants him to write more pop-based music. He was probably drunk when he said it anyway, as I am not sure how someone could maintain that moustache in a state of sobriety. I own every RH album, and I agree with Flowers. I like alot of the post OK Comp RH stuff, but I would like to see more major chord influence in upcoming albums.

2- The Killers are just getting going. I think that Hot Fuss measures up to Pablo Honey, so give him a chance. Thom is not a deity although I love his music. One human being to another, it’s okay to be critical.

Bill | 9/25/2006, 8:48 pm EST

Hey In Denver, do you like Mariah Carey as well? Radiohead is completely politically relevant, emotional and groundbreaking. They are absolutely amazing and will be remembered way after The Killers fizzle out. But how can someone be a fan of such significant music and then enjoy the puff that Whitney Houston churns out? She’s just a washed-up old hag.

Justin | 9/25/2006, 8:51 pm EST

In the end, Flowers may deliver the goods someday, but Thom York will always be HOTTER.

In Denver | 9/25/2006, 8:59 pm EST

I don’t need to defend my position on Whitney. She is a stunning beauty and is every bit as significant as Radiohead, just in a different way. Mariah doesn’t hold a candle to Whitney. Whitney is THE Diva of all Divas. And don’t fool yourself, Whitney is politically relevant, ground breaking, and certainly emotional. I find it offensive that you could call her a hag. She will mount the biggest comeback you have ever seen. And don’t surprised when you find out that Thom Yorke is a big fan of Whitney Houston. She single-handedly changed pop music and will do it again. Just watch and see.

Chuck | 9/25/2006, 9:06 pm EST

I was skeptical of The Killers and decided to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the moment Flowers begins to pretend he is anywhere NEAR Yorke or Radiohead’s calibur, I know he’s a dud. And unlike Flowers pretentious “One of the best of the last 20 years” fart, Radiohead HAVE done just that…at least 4 times! It takes mental power to comprehend Radiohead, I suppose not everyone can appreciate talent and innovation.

Chuck | 9/25/2006, 9:08 pm EST

P.S.- I do like your comment, Timo. Well said. (as far as anyone wishing Radiohead was more accessible, check out their new songs they’ve been playing!) Here’s to hoping the Killers have the balls and talent to make a career anywhere near Radiohead’s

Rob | 9/25/2006, 9:29 pm EST

In Denver, your beliefs about Whiteny are quite warped. Whitney is obnoxious and ugly for one. For two, Mariah Carey has been around as long as Whitney, virtually making the same style of music and the like. Look at the facts man, Whitney is not ground breaking at all, her music is practically manufactured, like most other pop acts since the late eighties.

Chris | 9/25/2006, 9:53 pm EST

I’ve always liked the Killers, but to for Brandon Flowers to give advice to Thom Yorke is extremly and completely laughable. Thom Yorke and Radiohead are 1 of the greatest bands ever and if not the best band of our generation. The killers will never ever mount up to the intelligence or creative success that Radiohead has achieved. I really am laughing at you and your lost identity Mr. Flowers. The sad thing is that I bought tickets to the killers show. I bet it wont be anywhere close to radioheads show at the garden this past summer

Jeff | 9/26/2006, 12:00 am EST

wow can you even begin to compare rip-off artists like Flowers to a band that will be remembered as prolly the greatest of our generation? The Killers are a novelty act, totally laughable.

” And you can take that to the bank!”

Justin | 9/26/2006, 12:50 am EST

Man, I would love to see Radiohead at the Garden. And I would love to have few minutes with Thom Yorke backstage if you know what I mean.

Jack | 9/26/2006, 12:52 am EST

Flowers is one of music’s biggest budding talents. Thom Yorke wrote some cool things in the past, but now his reputation is based solely on some artistic perception created by music media writers looking kiss ass and follow a trend.

In Denver | 9/26/2006, 1:05 am EST

Rob, you are out of line. Whitney is a genius, plain and simple. Not only is she gorgeous, but she is one of the most inventive artists in history. Credit Clive Davis and David Foster all you want, but she is the reason why it all happened. Next to Aretha and Diana Ross, she is most talented and amazing female vocalist ever. She reinvented female pop music. Mariah is a second class citizen next to Whitney. And in all seriousness, Thom Yorke would probably agree.

lglu | 9/26/2006, 2:07 am EST

Actually, Flowers does know the marketing machine that is the music industry. Every time he raises a ruckus with another band/lead singer, his names makes it into the press & he sells more CDs/tshirts/tickets.
This has nothing to do with anything other than Flowers being a Media Whore.

fakeplasticfool | 9/26/2006, 2:28 am EST

yo screw flowers that band will be old news long before readiohead ever puts out a bad album, er wait, i thought they already were old news?

A | 9/26/2006, 11:35 am EST

In Denver, I completely agree with you regarding Whitney Houston. She has done more for the gay community than Cher and Madonna combined. I can’t tell you how many nights her music has added to the emotion and intensity of my lovemaking. Get down to Radiohead, I’ll stick with Whitney.

tvotrfan | 9/26/2006, 12:20 pm EST

In Denver and A might think they are Whitney Houston fans, but I run her biggest unofficial fan club in the world. She is truly amazing.

THE KILLERS | 9/26/2006, 1:10 pm EST

Brandon Flowers R.I.P

batfink | 9/26/2006, 1:29 pm EST

Brandon Flowers should just take care of his litte band, which no one will remember two years from now…

Bob | 9/26/2006, 1:38 pm EST

That’s pronounced “Who-or”…

Timo | 9/26/2006, 2:22 pm EST

Can we stop with the Whitney Houston thing? Unreal. How do we go from The Killers and Radiohead to “The Greatest Love of All”? I hate to be divisive, but if we can’t have decent discussion of the topic at hand we are going to be forced to segregate into gay and straight forums. Gay guys.. please do your best to stay on the topic, I know it is difficult when the issue of Mariah v Whitney comes up, but I have faith that you guys can do it.

For the record, album sales are not completely irrelevant when discussing the quality of a band’s music, but they are pretty close to it. If you can sell 500,000 copies of any CD in 2006, you are doing something right. When CD prices still probably average at least $15 and about 90% of the music-buying public has options for downloading or copying music; going Gold is a big deal.

O-Face | 9/26/2006, 3:04 pm EST

Whitney Houston fans:
turd burglars
butt pirates
ass rangers
cock smokers
any other suggestions?

farouk bulsara | 9/26/2006, 3:43 pm EST

who is brandon flowers and why he’s trying so hard to get attention, making silly comments about radiohead? a moustache does not hide his lack of talent either

In Denver | 9/26/2006, 5:11 pm EST

O-Face, just because you are jealous of Whitney doesn’t mean you need to denounce her brilliance and beauty. Thom Yorke would be appalled. Radiohead is a groundbreaking and innovative band like Whitney, and together they will be seen as the pioneers of contemporary music that they are. You have serious problems if you can’t see the talent in Whitney Houston. How can you dig Radiohead and not Whitney? I doesn’t make sense.

Jack | 9/26/2006, 5:17 pm EST

Wow. Where is all this Whitney Houston stuff coming from? She sucks. How can a Radiohead fan be into Whitney Houston? She is a whacked-out talentless beast. In Denver, you don’t need to promote your gayness and devotion towards Whitney Houston, this is not the place. She has nothing to do with Yorke. Back on topic, Flowers writes great songs that are accessible, something Thom Yorke hasn’t done in quite some time.

O-Face | 9/26/2006, 6:45 pm EST

I’m not Jealous of Houston. Personally if I’m going to listen to that sort of pop music, Brian McKnight is where I wanna be. Didn’t you see the humor in my last post? It was a joke. Houston is alright, but McKnight is it for me. I happen to like men and McKnight fits the bill perfectly.

In Denver | 9/26/2006, 7:02 pm EST

McKnight is hot. That is for sure.

Still, it is amazing that Flowers feels he is even worthy of making remarks about Yorke. If he says anything about Whitney, there will be some big problems.

Stroke | 9/26/2006, 8:13 pm EST

Radiohead, Whitney, dkerbi, and In Denver all suck balls. Killers are amazing. Suck it.

Chad | 9/26/2006, 8:18 pm EST

The killers are about as nice to listen to as rap. Both crap. Flowers just wants to see his name in print. Has anyone actually listened to the lyrics? Give me a break.

Rob | 9/26/2006, 9:12 pm EST

In Denver: If I saw you, surely I would slap your face to show you that you are so wrong.

butt boy | 9/27/2006, 2:13 am EST

I’d spank Mr. Flower’s ass for being such a bad boy. And then I’d have Thom Yorke sit on my face. Yummy!!!!

mikesboy | 9/27/2006, 10:54 am EST

the killers: i hadn’t been as excited about a band since radiohead until these pouting magpies tarted their way onto my tv screen. the lyrics are actually quite good if you listen. check out david gray’s version of ’smile like you mean it’. it gives the song a whole new format with just voice and piano, and the words stand up just fine. this is a band with a future. no, they’re not radiohead. thom yorke can fart art. others have to work for it.

chet | 9/27/2006, 1:03 pm EST

Brandon and Neil should start a feud.

In Denver | 9/27/2006, 2:25 pm EST

Rob, if you were hot, I might enjoy it.

Rob | 9/27/2006, 3:50 pm EST

In Denver, being a gay man, I certainly would enjoy it too if you were attractive. But, your views on Radiohead and Whitney Houston being on the same playing field is way off.

Rob | 9/27/2006, 5:51 pm EST

Well that is too bad you are not me, whoever posted in my name. But the latter half of your comment was accurate. I would advise you do find your own user name next time.

O-Face | 9/27/2006, 6:37 pm EST

Rob, do you like Brian McKnight? Mariah vs. Whitney, who wins?

Brian | 10/15/2006, 2:09 am EST

Listen to Dr. Dog. It will change you.

Ha-ha, I’ve never even heard this jack-off’s band, and I never will. He just knows the only way more than two people (if any) would read this is to drop “Thom York” in there. Jackass.

Jake | 6/5/2008, 8:41 pm EST

Wow, you guys are the most idiotic people I’ve ever… read. Just listen to the Killers music once and maybe you’ll think twice. Brandon’s vocals is amazing. stfu :D

Thom Yorke has a wierd eye!
