You may recall that we had some why-weren’t-we-there anxiety when we heard all four original members of R.E.M. played a raucous, unannounced show in Athens, Georgia last week. We’re feeling slightly better now that we’ve appropriately obsessed over this clip, in which the band and approximately 394 of their closest local fellow-rockers play a messy version of “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” There are traffic cones and an alarming number of sweaty trucker hats involved, but hey, it’s the south, and we love the south. Plus, the sight of Michael Stipe, like, conducting the band/crowd through the “Leonard Bernstein” line is just … yeah.

A memory to cherish for a lifetime for these saps.
Like the time I jumped on stage with Springsteen and sang every verse of “Thunder Road”.

It is not “the south”. It is “The South”.

Wonder if after that they did a raucous, sweaty song from “Around the Sun.” NOT.

What’s Patterson Hood doing up there?
Beldo | 9/21/2006, 12:49 pm EST
Patterson Hood was singing some songs for the tribute show…R.E.M. came unannounced, the tribute show has been planned for a long time.

Boy do I hate how the Rolling Stone staff writes these childish pieces full of slang and terms of the moment. Lobsters is absolutely correct when correct a simple job. Writing like a reader or a kid on Myspace is not twee or hip. It is just unprofessional. Where are the editors for this site?
This is shameful. If he were dead, Jan would be spinning. As it lays it’s his magazine that is dead.

I was there. Right next to the monitor Michael stood on while conducting. The night was amazing. Alot of money was raised for a couple of local charities… I’m not sure which ones but I’m not the “journalist” here.
Count the facts:
REM played in Athens
394 people attended (might be low, double check)
They played “It’s the End…”
A traffic cone was involved
That’s four. Must’ve taken you all day, huh?
