Judging from the crowd packing New York’s Knitting Factory last night, the latest emo subgenre — dancemo — is here to stay. Cobra Starship — the folks who brought us the summer jam “Snakes On A Plane (Bring It)” got scene kids and baggy-trousered hip hop heads alike moving with “The Church of Hot Addiction” a dance track with a gritty rock n’ roll guitar line.
Travis McCoy, emcee for the hip hop-rock outfit Gym Class Heroes, joined Starship singer (and ex-Midtown frontman) Gabe Saporta onstage for a rousing rendition of their blockbuster “Bring It” before taking the stage with the rest of his crew to close the show. “We’re not here to save anything, we’re just here to have fun,” he proclaimed. And from the first strum of acoustic guitar in the opening song, “The Queen and I,” the group stuck to McCoy’s mandate. The crowd chimed in for the impossibly catchy hook, “So sexy!” on the song “Clothes Off,” a modern twist on the Eighties song “We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off.” And slower jams like “Taxi Driver” and the MySpace-inspired “New Friend Request” inspired the kids to grind like R. Kelly had just taken the stage.
