The Who Bring the Thunder at MSG

9/19/06, 5:02 pm EST

the whoThe Who’s 2006/07 World tour touched down at Madison Square Garden last night with a ferocious set that contained ten new songs – the most they’ve done since the original Quadrophenia tour in 1973. Opening with a trio of Sixties singles (”I Can’t Explain,” “The Seeker,” and “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere), Pete and Roger played “Fragments” (which sounds like an updated Baba O’Riley) from their upcoming LP The Endless Wire. This set the stage for the rest of the night, which alternated pretty steadily between new songs and familiar hits such as “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “My Generation.”

Touring behind a yet to be released album may be an unconventional move, but the MSG crowd treated the new material with a surprising amount of respect. The best of the new songs, such as “Mike Post Theme” (a tribute to the prolific TV composer) and “Black Widow’s Eyes” (about Stockholm Syndrome) may not reach the heights of Who’s Next – but they’re light years better than one would expect from a forty-two year old band that hasn’t cut a new album since 1982 and is literally half dead. If you have any doubts, check out Peter and Roger doing another new track, “Man In A Purple Dress” on Letterman last Thursday.

Opening up for The Who, for some inexplicable reason, was former Faith No More singer Mike Patton and his seemingly Limp Bizkit-inspired new group Peeping Tom. Never have I seen a worse choice for an opening band: As Patton slam danced on the stage, barking out indecipherable lyrics in front of a DJ, every fifty something year-old around me (and there were plenty) looked on with a mixture of confusion and horror. If only he had been one-fiftieth as entertaining as his recent appearance on “All My Children.”

Update:  On my way into the Garden I walked pass a short, stocky, unshaven man in a hat. I thought to myself “That looks like a homeless Phil Collins.” Low and behold!

I saw the Boston show on 9/16. Great except of course for the opening act. A message flashed on the jumbotron that concert cd’s are available at a web site. Does anyone know how to order?

I don’t know why, but I never really enjoyed British type of pop, mainly because it was too instigative and personal, like were they confessing to breaking in to our back door? and the chicken shed in the backyard? The Who? is that next to the pub called Hobo, to reference to Hoboken New jersey via Hornsby Sydney? And Jersey Road there? Townsend Street, Unley? I mean, why does it hurt? Still, out here in the fields, things are decaying and dying. Like the Tredrea’s pawnbroker TV commercial in the 60s was The Sultan of Swap. get it? Hertz like? Crazy mixed up kids eh?

If Phil still felt himself to be commercially viable he wouldn’t be doing the Genesis thing.

The second lead in join together has still managed to escape compare. Try it…you can’t reproduce it. It was brilliant.

both were awesome

Andy Greene should be sacked.

I can guarantee that Mike Patton NEVER appeared on ‘All My Children’. His name was mentioned on the show. That is all. Damn fool journo should really check his facts.

I’ll agree, not a suitable choice for support act. But, never ever put them in the same sentence as Limp Bizkit.

Mr Greene should really know better. Patton is very bloody talented with a vast repertoire. All Greene’s credibility is down the crapper.

Newk | 5/18/2007, 11:15 pm EST

Saw them in DC. Expected some nostalgia, got a GREAT show.

More or less nothing seems important. I’ve just been letting everything happen without me recently. I can’t be bothered with anything recently, but such is life. My life’s been generally bland today. Not much on my mind these days, but eh.

I can’t be bothered with anything recently. I’ve just been sitting around doing nothing. Today was a loss. I just don’t have much to say. Nothing seems worth thinking about.
