All hail Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose! With its release this Halloween, the Bat saga is at last complete – by which we mean, the saga of its supremely cheesy album covers, since there’s no conceivable plotline that could connect the albums themselves (heck, the new one was cobbled together out of old Jim Steinman odds n’ sods, including a leftover from an aborted Batman musical). So we figure the secrets of the trilogy must involve Long Haired Dude on Bike, his buddy Giant Bat, and his ladyfriend, Winged Chick. Help us out: What story do you think these three covers are telling?

The only story here is of Meatloaf rummaging through Jean-Michel Nicollet’s trash.

Cartoon monsters equals 80,000 thirteen year old boys rushing out to buy the album. How do you think Iron Maiden has survived all these years?

Here’s what they are telling us:
Nobody is interested in a new Meat Loaf record, so let’s call it “Bat ut of Hell III” to use the good feelings people have about the original and force the completists to buy it…

I don’t care what this tool thinks of the album covers. I see ‘rolling stone magazine’ and I expect a review of the music. I guess I expect to much from rolling stone. What a shame.
Ryan | 9/28/2006, 3:30 am EST
Meat Loaf has sold more albums then just about ANYBODY else….its not cuz of his album covers….hes the greatest of all time!!!

Rolling Stone suck ass and a thread like this just proves it….. Meat’s music is over-the-top, over-theatrical, over-produced, over-emotional…… In fact, it is over-everything and that is what makes it so great…….It is like nothing else in the universe. The covers just basically follow suit!
james | 10/4/2006, 8:45 pm EST
this is bad for Rolling Stone, normally their reviews are half decent readable, this is just trash…sorry, but maybe i should think twice about buying my next issue.
keith mccrackan | 10/5/2006, 4:28 am EST
I’ve heard the 3rd album, and it is no embarrassment, unlike what is passing for ‘rock journalism these days. Corporate online rock magazines still suck.

THE ALBUM SUCKS, MEATLOAFS VOICE IS FUCKED, STEINMAN HAS HAD NO INVOLVEMENT WITH THIS ALBUM. MEAT HAS LOST HIS MIND AND SHOULD BE PUT IN A MENTAL INSTITUTION!!!
ALL MEATLOAFS FANS ARE FUCKING LUNATICS AS WELL
RJ | 10/5/2006, 3:29 pm EST
It´s a great album. Definitely one of the best this year.
People from a magazine with covers like of this issue shouldnt complain about covers.

This “Bat III” album is way worse than the first two. Calling it “Bat III” is like fraud, because Jim Steinman wasn’t involved in the album. They just did covers of Steinman’s oldies, and did a fairly crappy job of it.
Chris | 10/5/2006, 6:33 pm EST
If you don’t like Meat Loaf, then don’t listen. His voice sounds better than ever to some of us, like me. Who the fuck do you people think you are. You people critize others, like to see you rock for over 30 years. ASSHOLES
Me | 10/5/2006, 6:40 pm EST

Bat 3 isnt a Bat album, all the ML fans that are trying to convince themselves and others are just deluding themselves. The album should have given the loaf a chance to go out with a bang, instead he exits with a whimper.
The vocals are dreadful, the songs have no depth or feeling the whole thing was rushed and fucking ruined, meat and the rest of those involved with this crap album should hang their heads in shame.
yep | 10/6/2006, 5:05 am EST
album is a fraud, but don’t worry, it will all end up in Steinman’s favour. You will see, in 6 months time, meanwhile the best we can hope is that this abortion crashes and burns
Tom | 10/6/2006, 6:04 am EST
Its funny that all these die hard meat fans cannot, and refuse too see the facts. They are so obsessed with this guy, he is there god , he is their idol, everything he does is perfect.
Well welcome to the real world BAT 3 sucks!!!
in 6 months time it will be in the bargain bucket section for 2-99 , you know the places im talking about, poundstretcher, asda, BP garages LOL
steve | 10/6/2006, 11:31 am EST
Dont like it!! i hear Take That are still touring!!
its really simple numbnuts!!
If you dont like it dont buy it!!
It’s a pity such a well known rag has to resort to such measures to sell, judging by some comments here most of these people are a little too young to read a mag like this anyway let alone comprehend these lyrics.
steve | 10/6/2006, 11:43 am EST
dont like it dont buy it!!

Tom | 10/6/2006, 12:28 pm EST
Most people here know what good music is, the clowns that follow some tired old has been are the ones that should stfu!
Meatloaf has lived off the back of a 30 year old album that was created by speeding up the vocals to make him sound good. Not one of his live performances sounded like the album! I have a Meatloaf video of what must rate as the worst live performance i have ever seen. The credit should go to Todd Rundgren for making meat sound good, that was a miracle.
Bat 3 sucks, it will bomb, i have heared every song and its very sad that the guy is still attempting to sing at 60 years old, some people just never know when its over
James | 10/7/2006, 4:56 am EST
Tom – try experiencing it yourself. Live performances shouldn’t sound like carbon copies of the album…
Every Meat Loaf performance I’ve seen’s blown me away.
steve jones | 10/7/2006, 7:06 am EST
wheres the f-ing review?
Rolling Stone sure got the review of bat 1 right didnt they? So i cant believe a word said about this one!
paul tomb | 10/7/2006, 7:10 am EST
Tom i think its more embarrassing for the stones to be prancing about on stage trying to reclaim their youth!!
At least Meat Loaf doesn’t pretend to be anything else than what he is!
Incidently send us a copy of your version of these songs then we’ll talk about how well these songs have been sung!!
manny | 10/7/2006, 7:15 am EST
cobbled together with old stinman songs??
You have obviously missed the other half of the album!!
Try comparing the steinman songs to the originals!! Meat Loaf did Steinman a favour in making them sound the way they should instead of the woeful previous attempts by other artists including Steinman!! Great songwriter, rubbish singer!!
slinky | 10/7/2006, 7:25 am EST
as a fan of the bats but not Meat Loaf himself i have actually found more objective and honest reviews on the fan website which surprised the heck out of me!!
I came here looking for the same,
I havent read a review just a public slanging match!
even his die hard fans seem to acknowledge some songs arent great but some of you guys don’t seem to be able to credit anything!
And dont delude yourselves guys, all albums end up in the bargain bucket sooner or later
This seems to be just a playground so if you want to exchange views with adults in a mature way i suggest you head over to mlukfc as they seem to be a lot more objective than this rag.
I’m dissapointed that RS couldn’t give a more comprehensive review.
The article on justin timberlakes handbag was more thought out than this!
Disciple | 10/7/2006, 10:12 am EST
The third Meat Bat is totally overkill with 14 songs and over 76 minutes playtime. The 1st Bat had seven magnificent songs. 30 years down the road, we get twice the amount but only half the result. This is a mishmash of old Steinmansongs, which – in all cases – are better with the originalrecordings (even the Celine Dion-one, which I can’t believe I’m saying). Please, can’t someone prevent Meat Loaf from turning every stone in order to find Steinmansongs to record? From Steinman’s soloeffort via “Streets of fire” and “Pandora’s box” to Celine Dion? Really? Releasing a third Bat without Steinman’s approval, and only hashing around old songs of his, is nothing but fraud and shows an artist/recordlabel being desperate. I’ll grant you, “Cry for me” has sensational Meat-vocals, probably on of his best songs ever. But to listen to “Seize the night” go on and on actually makes me realize even a Meat Loaf-record Can be overproduced and Desmond Child isn’t the “Less is more” kinda-guy. More than often the feeling in the arrangements are “Hell, we can put in even more strings or guitars, we’re making Meat Loaf’s third Bat and we’ve got a biiiig budget!”. A hodgepodge of old Steinmain-stuff, a drummer that sounds uninspired and a production & mix that could have been much better + too many songs. Let’s hope the Bat is finally put to rest now.
Adrian Colley | 10/11/2006, 5:55 am EST
Ok Guys, Bat Out OF Hell 3 is not going to blow you away! But give the man some credited. He is a true great to rock, his previous album sales prove this! His Live gigs are great, obviously his voice is not as good as it was, hes near 60 for fuck sake! Let him sample you with his music for one last time! x
Shane Ohara | 10/12/2006, 11:39 pm EST
Look I heard 4-5 songs from Bat 3 and OK… the voice isn’t what it use to be. Hell…Mic Jagger, Steve tylor etc. They all sound used and abused, But..Their hearts are in the right place and love for music and entertaining. MeatLoaf said he was an Actor, (entertainer) and he does give it his all. The music today is good too and alot of the new artist do respect him, maybe rolling Stone Mags should do the ame…….. As for Steinman I have that Album too, He’s not Meatloaf(voice), but he tried to sing his own songs … give him Credit.. Meatloaf took his songs(old or what..) Made BAT OUT OF HELL 3. Ill tell you what if you don’t BUY this Album then go by something ELSE”””, He don’t need your put downs, insults.bad lauaguage…etc. IF I HAD A CHANCE TO SEE HIS CONCERT I WOULD. I missed my Chance for BAT 2 (My first Daughter), Could I have SAid that (My second Daughter). Each time Birh of my Children and Im a happy Father… Now BAT 3……SOLD OUT IN ONE DAY…….ahhhhhhh. My loss but I will still buy the ALBUM, because He’s a good person and he puts out 100 percent plus…….. I think these reviews are bogus and ONE OPINION…….SORRY FOR YOU MAGS BUT I”LL PUT MY MONEY WITH MEATLOAF…….60 lol my DAd is 74 tell him he’s too old and he’ll run circles around these young guys at work…………….
PS.Peo ple who give reviews I find the things they LIKE I DON”T…SO YOUR OPINION don’t hold much weight.

I thought the album was shit
Jimkel | 10/21/2006, 9:51 am EST
I’m not a die hard meat loaf fan. He has a lot of flaws, but however this album came about, cobbled together or not, I must admit, It’s possibly some of his best stuff! On first listen I tought, naa this is’nt near as good as meatloaf back in the day. But after giving the album the benifit of the doubt I discovered an excellent collection of meat loaf epics, There’s more good songs on this album then on any of his previous albums. I think he made a mistake with the track the monster’s loose, It’s good towards the end, but still has an air of meat trying to be “modern”. so besides that, Land of the pigs, monstro and if it aint broke. Every other song is perfect. I think people have to remember that unlike most music today this will actually take a few listens to get into. Such is the sheer amount of music on the album. Some songs that would be easy to say , Naa this is gonna suck, after about 20 seconds of listening, turn out to be absolute rollercoaster rides of musical brilliance when given a complete listen. He does himself proud on this album. Alot of people say hes lost it Vocally, Well he hasnt got the range he once had. thats a natural part of aging, but show me one guy his age who can sing like that in popular music, he holds every song, every note without any sign of weakness. He still fuckin rocks. I don’t care how many takes it took to get it right, I don’t care if he can pull it off live, He’s gettin on in years now give him a break. We’re not reviewing meat loaf live here it’s a review of an album as it is, and as it is, It blows all this modern Hip hop, Metal emo crap, Coldplay style boredom rock, Boy band junk off the shelfs. He’s produced one way or another an album of such epic proportions it may be the last of it’s kind we see on this earth, So give credit were It’s due. If this is Meat loafs last album it marls the end of an era. The stones are’nt gettin any younger, AC/DC will one day be a memory, Classic rock is a dignified old man and meat loaf has shown that this old man still has balls and talent. 5 out of fuckin 5 stars.
Jimkel | 10/21/2006, 10:05 am EST
And another thing, people saying bat out of hell 3 isn’t a bat album. WHAT? Meat loaf has his say at the end of the day and if he releases an album called bat 3 then it’s a bat album.
Stienman was in the studio for half this albums recording, He had a lot to do with this album and they fell out, They fall out all the time, Every bat album saw bust ups between Steinman and Meat loaf.
No one said being easy to work with makes a better recording session, Just look at the Smashing Pumpkins, Do you think Melloncollie would of reached such great heights if Billy Corgan And co Did’t argue and bicker. The emotional rollercoaster ride of recording an Album is the fuel that makes good songs into great albums. Meat Loaf is cheesey, He was around before these things were even considered cheesey, His album covers are just part of the package, Like Iron Maiden. Why should his latest album be any different. STOP ARGUEING OVER THE TITLE, THE COVER AND THE HISTORY AND STAR TALKING ABOUT THE SONGS.
davyd83 | 10/23/2006, 5:12 am EST
“It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” was originally written for “Bat II,” but didn’t make it on to the album and was going to be used for “Bat III.”
Davy Sheppard | 10/23/2006, 12:33 pm EST
I am from N.Ireland, and wat can I say a public slagging match! Meat has his flaws, but jesus christ have you listended 2 the Album the whle way through, i has just been released his 2day and i cnt take it of of the cd player, this has 2 b some of the best stuff he has done,i was blown away with this album, tracks like ‘ALIVE’, ‘BLIND AS A BAT’ and ‘CRY TO HEAVEN’, the bat may now be put to rest, but i can tell you all something, Meat Loaf sure as hell won’t be and he will be back with a new Album i am sure! Before I start I am a true Steinman fan and I love the sound of Meatloaf. However this album is hypocrisy, heresy, anarchy and every other adjective that can be used to describe this fraudulently released ‘album’. The engineering sucks to high heaven I can do better with my home PC and do so regularly. Some of the tracks epecially the title one seem to have glitches in them almost like a vinyl album jumping ahead and missing words out! The voice has been destroyed by over-processing and to includ Brian May just smacks of desperation. Todd could have done the same job (and I am BM fan too!). The mismash of songs have been put together in a hury they do not flow nor do they link up in any way. And all coming back to me was released in 1988 by Pandoras Box and is the best recording ever -go listen to it and see what ML did to it – sadly! Bad for Good is just the same version as Steinmans. When you think nearly half of the songs were written probably nearly 30 years ago – and made to try and sound contemporary – no wonder the result is pure rubbish. I will listen to the album – for posterity but not often. I still enjoy Bat 1 & 2. This will not be part of any Bat trilogy. Steinman has been ridiculed by the release of this album as he will be forever associated with the incompetence of the engineers and producer. And if ML thinks it sounds good i don’t wanna go and watch him sing it live – it would be pure hypocrisy if I did.
Correction | 1/25/2009, 3:02 pm EST
Steinman was not in the studio for half the album’s recording. He wrote half the songs, maybe, but he was absolutely positively not there. He was busy in New York trying to develop a new band (went bust – shows how some decisions work out). I was witness to some of the band’s “launch” performances, and I must say that Steinman would have had a safer bet trying to rough it out in the studio with Meat. Instead, Steinman actively stayed away from the album and in fact tried to shut it down, threatening to sue Universal and Virgin if they released the CD because he owned the rights to the “Bat Out of Hell” title. Bad faith move, man. Either way, I hope they both get the fuck over it.
