- Touring, touring, everyone’s touring! Angels & Airwaves are, plus “Gregg Allman & Friends” (not to be confused with the regular old Allman Brothers – details and dates after the jump.)
- Listen to this incredible new Tom Waits track, “Bottom of the World.” We are officially exceedingly psyched about Orphans: Brawlers, Ballers, and Bastards. [via Stereogum]
- Remember the gloriously badass bloody mess that was Ben Kweller at Austin City Limits? Well now there’s video.
- Lady Sovereign is doing a cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant” for the next OC soundtrack album. Is this selling out? Our head hurts.
With just about a month off after the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND’s lengthy summer tour, GREGG ALLMAN is set to return to the road, with “Gregg Allman & Friends” dates confirmed through mid-January. The singer/keyboardist will kick the trek off October 13 in upstate New York and travel across the country–including 10 shows in California–before wrapping January 14, 2007 in St. Louis. Honeytribe–the band featuring GREGG’S son Devon Allman–will open several shows, with Danielia Cotton on hand for the rest.
This past weekend (9/16), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member was bestowed with another special honor: ALLMAN himself was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame’s “Performer” category. The ceremony took place Saturday, September 16 in Atlanta, where ALLMAN performed his classic “Melissa.” He was also joined by R.E.M. members Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Bill Berry on “Midnight Rider.” The ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969, with GREGG’s brother DUANE ALLMAN, BERRY OAKLEY, BUTCH TRUCKS, DICKEY BETTS & JAIMOE. Soon after GREGG joined the group, they moved north to Macon, Georgia in 1969, the home of their record label, Capricorn. GREGG returned to Georgia in recent years to take up residency in Savannah. “I’m proud to call myself a Georgian,” says GREGG. “And to earn a spot again in the Hall along with those other guys like Otis Redding, James Brown, Ray Charles and Blind Willie McTell–that’s cool.” The ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND were inducted as a band to the Atlanta-based hall in 1998.
For the fall solo tour, GREGG’s “Friends” will be MIKE C. BARNES (guitar), JAY COLLINS (sax), JERRY JEMMOTT (bass), NEIL LARSON (keyboard), FLOYD MILES (percussion) and STEVE POTTS (drums).
The ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND kicked off their 2006 tour with 13 sold-out shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre, where they have been doing multiple-night gigs in March since 1989. This summer, they headlined their own two-day Wanee Festival in April and then toured the U.S. In recent live reviews, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said “Allman, seated at the keyboards…has only gotten better with age, adding more authority to staples like ‘Statesboro Blues,’ ‘Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More’ and the show-stopping ‘One Way Out.’” (8/17/06), while the Boston Herald raved, “the band sounded better than ever” (8/28/07).
