The Who: Lean, Mean and Acoustic

9/15/06, 12:07 pm EST

Yesterday was another big day for the The Who: on top of announcing their Sirius Radio channel, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey stopped by the David Letterman show to play a lovely acoustic version of “Man in a Purple Dress,” from their upcoming CD The Endless Wire. We are sufficiently ressured that Wire will not be It’s Hard, Pt. 2.

Later that night Pete stopped by the tiny downtown club Joe’s Pub to perform at his girlfriend Rachel Fuller’s gig, alongside Martha Wainwright. Pete strummed along during both ladies’ brief sets before taking a solo slot in the middle of the show that included the new track “In the Ether” and such classics as “Greyhound Girl,” “Let’s See Action,” “Blue, Red & Grey” (on ukelele!) before everyone came back out for a raucous rendition of “I’m One” from Quadrophenia. The new album is out October 31st, but check out leaks here. [thanks, Stereogum]

How can one call themselves as “Rock God” and make the comments that you are pulling. You know that there is no song called Teenage Wasteland its Baba O’Riely you stupid stupid fool. I saw the Who last week in Chicago at the United Center. They were fantastic. RockGod your whats wrong with this world. please stop listening to music.

I love all the people who trash the who.. it just proves you know nothing about the history of rock and roll or it’s future.. i’m not gonna start listing all the reason why the new songs are great.. just take my word for it ..they are. if you want boring trash buy the new stones record. if you want 23 year old pete and roger listen to who’s next.. if you feel like hearing the music that pete roger and all the real who fans care about.. buy the new album.. it’s gonna be fantastic.

ozzie | 9/25/2006, 1:19 pm EST

Hey RockGod, buy a fucking ticket and go see a show and you will get your answer. If not, just stay home and listen to your CDs and stop trashing the new music with your infantile reviews. You wouldn’t know what was The Who if you had it inserted in your arse. The new music is amazing live and every bit The Who! To quote George Harrison from the movie AHDN “You’re a drag, a well known drag.”

WHO tour opening act? | 9/25/2006, 9:53 am EST

anyone??? got tickets for 730 show tonight. need to be late if possible.

PtWindmill | 9/23/2006, 4:14 pm EST

RockGod, your opinion may carry more weight if you learn to spell Roger’s name correctly and knew the actual names of the songs. You come off like a usenet troll.

The music is vibrant, brilliant and fresh. Long live the Who.

I listed to Wire and Glass today 2 times. I am very disappointed. Townshend’s voice sounds bad on his vocal tracks. These song dont move me at all. I love the Who..very much. I am sad

Johnny M | 9/18/2006, 1:30 pm EST

I’m going to MSG tonight. Anyone know if there is an opening act?

pony65 | 9/18/2006, 8:18 am EST

I saw the Who saturday in Boston they rocked the sold out house of over 17,000 that never sat down. If 60plus guy’s can do that I feel great at 50. Rogers voice sounded great and Pete Townsend gutair work was hot from begining to end. The final song an acustic duo was the balls. It was the best birthday present I could have asked for. I turned 50 with the Who

jimdandy | 9/18/2006, 1:44 am EST

Face dances pt 2… ya right, good one sis.. Kenny Jones is feeding his horses somewhere and John is Gone forever and so is Moony if we havent noticed ?
So to compare Endless Wire or The Ooo of today to or with anything else would be simply foolish. I don’t believe Pete or Roger would bother wasteing there time at this point, unless they can support what they have recorded.. Pushing 60+ is well Past AARP time.
I dont see any signs of Cooks county or How can u Do it alone on this little EP >
After a two decades of wait, I will gladly imbrace new Ooo songs even if they don’t make my ears bleed or make me feel like crashing my car!
“I suggest Live at leeds for that ”
Instead I will choose to thank Roger and Pete for this effort.
Question.
How can you go from TWL 2 WAU ?
Answer. you don’t..
Buy the Dolls new cd…

Maybe, finally, a band that I listened to in my youth will release something I’ll feel good about purchasing.

LONG LIVE THE WHO!!

Moo | 9/17/2006, 8:43 am EST

The EP is fab! I’ve practically heard all of the album, what with snippets on the web and on ITA and it’s going to be fantastic. If you want another Baba or another Who Are You then go get out your old CD’s. This is Pete and Roger back doing new music, GREAT new music. Pete’s ’song writing ability’ is still top notch! If you don’t like it then you don’t have to listen to it.

RockGod?

I think you had better wait for the LP
I have heard it and its a mix of slower songs and ALOT of rockers that simply kick-ass!

Its a perfect 10

dc Th | 9/16/2006, 9:28 pm EST

RockGod get a life
Long live rock

KENNY C. VAIL | 9/16/2006, 7:59 pm EST

WIRE AND GLASS IS AMAZING…CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR THE REST OF THE LP!

RockGod | 9/16/2006, 7:34 pm EST

I wasn’t saying 1973 had to be recreated but 2006 doesnt have to be recreated either… just because its been 33 years doesnt mean a person’s song writing ability has to diminish, and you can argue all you want but those sample songs are dull and lackluster, a complete disapointment.

Orrcon3 | 9/16/2006, 6:46 pm EST

What stupid fools have commented adversely on this site!!! You judge music on its merits!! Not on past glories! Get a grip people!! Go Pete!!!!

djr | 9/16/2006, 5:33 pm EST

First time I heard a cut from the new music on Letterman Thursday, I have to admitt my first reaction was “what the —-”. I taped it and watched it again. Now I,m getting it and I loved it. Can’t wait to see roger and pete. They are by far still my favorite band ever.

gary | 9/16/2006, 2:48 pm EST

What?? No mention of the Amazing Foy Vance at Joes Pub gig? The injustice of it. I think the new Who songs are remarkable.

Moo | 9/16/2006, 2:15 pm EST

RockGod, maybe you should learn how to spell the names of Pete and Roger and learn the names of their songs (its called Baba O’Riley) before criticizing!

LONG LIVE THE WHO!!

Pete Townshend is God. That is all.

DW | 9/16/2006, 9:48 am EST

These new songs are fresh and sound great. Pete Townshend is a great song writer, not only does he write great music but the lyrics make you think.

Anonymous | 9/16/2006, 9:44 am EST

The song are GREAT! Long Live The Who. By the way (Rock God) It’s not “Teenage Wasteland,” its “Baba O’Riley. ” “It’s Not Enough” reminds me of “Give Blood” - another great song by PT.

THANK YOUFORTHE LINK - I’ve played it about 100x

MONTY | 9/16/2006, 9:38 am EST

I’m enjoying the new material. Anyone expecting The Who of 1973 is going to be disappointed. One can’t capture a time period that isn’t in its time.

Pete and Rog have grown to a new level. The acoustic “Man In The Purple Dress” shows me Pete’s lyric prowess is as strong as ever. Very crafty and complex.

I am excited to hear the full CD, and I’m sure there will be some hard-hitting rock songs to give the CD even more depth.

joe | 9/16/2006, 9:06 am EST

these songs are great
some rock some are quiet
but all very cool
wait to hear all 19 tracks

bigstarlet | 9/16/2006, 2:05 am EST

Tea and Theatre was played as part of a “New Music” set on one of the local radio stations. DJ purposefully left off saying the name of the band until he got some votes in on the song.

Opinions came in strong and swift. Listeners HATED it!

nurserock1 | 9/16/2006, 1:47 am EST

Man in a Purple Dress was touching, moving and well written/performed. But those songs on that site assure that it may not be Its Hard pt 2 but it may well be Face Dances part 2…YUCK

RockGod | 9/15/2006, 11:02 pm EST

that may be Rodger Daultry and Pete Townshed, but thats not the Who and those sample songs suck. How can you go from Teenage Wasteland and Who Are You to a man in a purple dress?….

Delbert | 9/15/2006, 7:45 pm EST

wooooooo,wwwwoooooo,woooooooo!
