Stupid Debate: Is Aussie Rock Crap?

9/14/06, 3:23 pm EST

Whoa, dudes. Yesterday when we wrote a little mash note to Aussie trio the Grates we had no idea we’d spark such a heated and virulent discussion on whether or not Australian rock blows. [Ed's note: Considering our Grates and Wolfmother fixation, we think it's self-evident where we stand.] We’ve highlighted some of the more — ahem — colorful remarks we got for your amusement.

Jake | 9/13/2006, 8:24 pm: Australians make the worst music in the world. Even worse than Mexican rap…well, not that bad.

Aussie Austin | 9/13/2006, 9:12 pm EST: fuck off dude, come over here, see some REAL bands and say that again to my face

NiB | 9/13/2006, 9:22 pm EST: Jake, you must be Americam, so don’t even start me on all the over produced/hyped shit your country pumps out every year.

Jack | 9/13/2006, 9:33 pm EST: Hi Jake, you tool. Im an Aussie and I would have to say that your comment is really ignorant. Australia has plenty of great bands. You just probably havent heard of them. The Sleepy Jackson, Dallas Crane, The Grates, The Vines, Gyroscope, The Drones, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Saints, Radio Birdman, AC/DC !!!!, Wolfmother, Early INXS with Michael Hutchenes, you know the list goes on. So next time think before you speak.

DK | 9/13/2006, 9:55 pm EST: I totally agree with Jack!

Obviously, Jake hasn’t even touched the surface of any kind of Aussie music.

Don’t forget about Silverchair, Paul Kelly, The Badloves, Taxiride, Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel, XTC, Crowded House and Midnight Oil…to name a few more!

Oh…the list goes on!

Hernandez | 9/14/2006, 1:02 am EST: Yup! And Midnight Oil sucks, so get them out of that list

Daniel | 9/14/2006, 2:50 am EST: Jake, mate, thats such an american thing to say. Hope you are having fun there in your little bubble enjoying all ur hip hop over there in America, in other countries ( yes, there are other countries other then the US) we make music called rock, and we are bloody good at it too. So mate, next time you wanna cop out on Australian music think to yourself, who would you raher be from your country, the GRates or the Dixie, Chicks, I rest my case.

Jap | 9/14/2006, 10:48 am EST: Australians smell like kangaroo turds.

Love cup | 9/14/2006, 11:48 am EST: Don’t forget Rick Springfield. Go easy on the aussie’s.

Jake | 9/14/2006, 12:00 pm EST: One more thing- anyone who has to mention AC/DC as one of their countries top bands kind of proves my point, wouldn’t you say?

And nice try on XTC, lol.

BIT | 9/14/2006, 12:21 pm EST: I’m American, but I wish I was Australian.

Man, that Jake’s right. Silverchair? The Vines? AC/DC’s good for a lark, but…Midnight Oil?

Nick Cave’s awesome…no surprise, then, that he’s based out of London.

Australian music is like a generic rock-dump. Its all bargain basement trash. It pains me to admit that Canada’s got you guys beat…just cos they can at least claim Neil Young and the Arcade Fire…

Even the kiwis, sheeit, got you guys bad, what with the Tall Dwarves, the Clean and the Bats.

Oh, well, at least you guys got all the good actors, right?

Matt | 9/14/2006, 8:47 pm EST

Austrailian Rock…

Didn’t AC/DC leave Austrailia the first chance they got to move to London. Same with Nick Cave. The only reason I know who Midnight Oil are is because the singer ran for Parliment. And the only reason someone mentinoed Radio Birdman is because they released a new album. That album doesn’t get released and written about in RS, you don’t know who they are.

Anonymous | 9/14/2006, 9:00 pm EST

Everything – Absolutely everything! – about Austrailia is great! I’m packing up and moving there as soon as I have something worth packing up.

sam | 9/14/2006, 9:42 pm EST

OK Rwwor, I’m a kiwi and I love my nation’s music, and I wouldn’t in my wildest dreams claim we have Australia’s music beat. Trust me, having spent a lot of time in both Australian and New Zealand’s pubs, clubs and various venues over the years, Aussie music kicks ass.

Australia, particularly Melbourne and Sydney, have an incredibly high standard of good bands – on any given night you can catch a decent show.

Phil | 9/14/2006, 10:34 pm EST

Oh dear, it looks like the yanks are a little sensitive about the crap music they produce…

I’d rather listen to Aussie crap than (most) American music. The Uk has them beat as well.

One reason why Australian acts go overseas is purely financial – even though Australia is almost the same area as the US we only have 20 million people.

Also, don’t say Midnight Oil was unknown is the US (and you only knew about MO because Peter Garrett ran for Parliament??? Yeah right…). I’ve known about the many tours in the States.

I’m amazed at how insular some Americans are!

Matt | 9/15/2006, 1:20 am EST

Oh Phil, I’m sorry. Did I hurt your feelings? Don’t worry, maybe during the next tribal council they’ll vote you off the island. Keep those hopes up.

pk | 9/15/2006, 11:46 am EST

Hell No!

Rrowr | 9/15/2006, 4:11 pm EST

Jeez, Sam, you gotta get with the pride for the motherland…sure, NZ’s got more sheep and hobbits than people, but some of those sheep can wail!

And Phil1 Mr. Masingil! Come on. Iggy f’in Pop! Jim f’in Morrison! Elvis Presley! Al Green! Ray Charles! Bob “the Bob” Dylan!

The US of A has its problems…but we run rock. Every note ever played by a white Aussie was a poor regurgitation of American blood, sweat and bile.

Its not yr guys’ fault, really…Australia doesn’t have the national character to play great rock music. So don’t take it too hard.

Plus, and this ain’t no small thing, Natalie Imbruglia! She’s hot and that track was worth at least 3 from Canadian songstresses Alanis and Sarah McLoughlin (except Possesion…)! That’s a start, at least! You gotta take what you can get, if you guys produced more crass commercial crap you’re young folk would have something to rally and wail against. As it is, access to alcohol is way too prevelant in yr little country. Everybody I’ve met from there likes to have fun! And that’s no way to grind out some good rock n’ roll…

You know it’s just occrued to me that no one has mentioned the blistering talents of Russel Crowe’s band: The Guy Who Throws Phones And Four Dudes He Met In A Bar.

Free65 | 10/19/2006, 7:37 pm EST

How can americans criticize australian bands? You are filling the air with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and a lot of hip-hop crap, rap, a disaster for the music!! Where are the good bands???. Look at the world!! We are seeing you like the worst in the world regarding music. Everything is teen pop and a thing that some people called music: hip hop!!!! C’mon. That’s not music, singing while other is playing an old tune. England rules!!

Diversity | 3/28/2008, 8:15 pm EST

See…the comment about crap hip hop puts you in the same category as trailer park red necks.
The reason true hip hop heads won’t shout “fuck rock” is because we appreciate DIVERSITY! Why don’t you just put on a white suit and burn a cross on my lawn!!!
