Beck Aims to Keep Fans’ “Idle Hands” Busy On New Album

9/14/06, 10:49 am EST

beck
For his new album, The Information, due out October 3rd, Beck has created a video for each song, which will be embedded with digital downloads of the tunes, and widely available for free on YouTube.com and elsewhere. It’s part of the freak-folk forebearer’s plan to help redefine the album for the digital age. “We’re moving into time where the song and the imagery and video are all able to exist as one thing,” he tells us. “It’s not even technically an audio thing anymore, it’s something else.”

In addition, each physical copy of the album will come with a mostly blank cover and, inside, a sheet of stickers (each disc will have one of four possible sheets) so each owner can create his or her own album art. “We’re giving people an assignment,” Beck says. “It’s something to do with their idle hands while they listen to music so they don’t get into trouble, just doing out part.”

stickers!

Though I’m sure most fans will leave the cover as it is, just to be able to say it’s untouched.

BenChrisCameronThayil | 9/14/2006, 12:14 pm EST

who are directing the videos?

Jon B. | 9/14/2006, 12:17 pm EST

I find the idea of pasting a video for every song frustrating. I don’t watch music video television, so i never really know what the video is. I feel like it leaves very little room for personal interpretation, but simply in principle. One reason why I love Beck’s songs so much is because theres alot of room for personal interpretation. Hopefully people will find their own way to relate to the songs, and not go by what beck has prepared for them (this time around). Its most of what the joy of music listening is.

Beck has gone crazy. lol! But I do look forward to the album, though! The further he moves away from “Sea Change”, the better!

breathmint | 9/14/2006, 1:24 pm EST

no direction really, twas just beck n band n friends messing aorund in front of a green screen… edited later.

goofiness not really intepretation. they’re fun !! :]

DORA | 9/14/2006, 1:42 pm EST

Stickers are just what my idle hands need!

jason | 9/14/2006, 1:51 pm EST

Maybe he’ll package a free e-meter with his next group of songs.

Jess | 9/14/2006, 3:55 pm EST

See, folks, this is why Beck is awesome. His music is great on its own, and he’s still trying interesting new things. I can’t wait for the new album!

Also, I personally LOVE Sea Change. Sure, it’s not typical Beck, but it’s a lovely album. And I don’t usually like country!

hangontoyourego | 9/14/2006, 3:58 pm EST

Jess:
I would agree with you that Sea Change is a brilliant, but I wouldn’t really consider it country. I would say that it was closer to folk.

hangontoyourego | 9/14/2006, 3:59 pm EST

I meant to say a brilliant album…

jackinthebox | 9/14/2006, 4:05 pm EST

i love the videos for this album and it truly is a groundbreaking idea. guero deluxe featured “visualization”-esque videos from D-fuse and the information features lo-fi homemade videos. I cant wait to have the bears dancing in my living room at 1000 BPM.

PS. to settle the worries of Jon (and others), like Breathmint said, there is no direction to the videos, just fun in front of a green screen. interpretation, as always, remains with the listener/viewer/sticker-er…

monooulin | 9/14/2006, 5:52 pm EST

I can’t wait for this record!!! it’s like a communion between Beck and us!! he does the music we do the art work!! :)

The Duce | 9/14/2006, 6:14 pm EST

Dwayne W. you don’t know what you’re talking about Sea Change was on hell of an alubum! anything beck dose will be amazing. He has never let his fans down and never will! and for the music video for every song, I can see where jon B. is coming from but then again, it will be nice to not whats going on in the wondeful mind of beck!

John | 9/14/2006, 6:36 pm EST

wow, i would totally go gay for him.

Ankur | 9/14/2006, 9:27 pm EST

He’s going Sgt Pepper on us! (The Beatles were going to include fake mustaches, hats and pinups with the sleve of their Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band record. EMI, however, scrapped that idea, because it contrasted with marketting or something.)

davy d | 9/14/2006, 10:59 pm EST

my ocd is going to force me to buy two albums. one to fuck with and one to never open. beck please tour in ohio you bastard.

jenny | 9/14/2006, 11:00 pm EST

i’m with dwayne w about sea change. not that i hate it or anything, but it’s not my favorite beck album.

mike | 9/14/2006, 11:24 pm EST

a true artist. he may be anal like the guys in the flaming lips say, but so fuckin’ what? this guy’s got more talent in his pinky toe than most. can’t wait for the new album and hope to meet this weirdo someday…

Anonymous | 9/14/2006, 11:33 pm EST

this will be excellent

jonnybegood | 9/15/2006, 12:05 am EST

This guy don’t know what to do to sell more records, all this video thing is ridiculous, the music is the only important thing here.

pk | 9/24/2006, 2:04 pm EST

That man is brilliant

Danny | 10/5/2006, 5:11 pm EST

He’s done nothing different than The Rolling Stones did on STICKY FINGERS with the zipper and Led Zeppelin did on LED ZEPPELIN 3 with the rotating disc with the different pictures showing in the cut-out holes in the cover or even L.Z.’s PHYSICAL GRAFFITTI with the different pictures in the cut-outs on the cover. Why the big deal all of a sudden? If the music is good, people will buy the album. If it sucks, they won’t. Noone buys music for STICKERS. Give me a freakin’ break!
