Albert Hammond, Jr.: Not at All Stifled By the Strokes. Really.

Albert Hammond Jr

This is an interesting promotional approach: Strokes’ guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. told the NME that some of the tracks on his debut solo record Yours To Keep were originally offered to the band and rejected. “I did suggest my songs (to the rest of The Strokes) once or twice and I got turned down,” he reportedly said. “It wasn’t actually Julian who turned it down, it was the other members who didn’t like it.” (Those Strokes are crazy! His songs are really good.) The guitarist was quick to dissuade anyone from misinterpreting his frustration as, you know, frustration. “I don’t think I feel trapped in the band, but I’m definitely glad I made this record,” he explained. “It wasn’t, ‘I wanna get out’, just sometimes after all the press and touring with each other sometimes you want something different.” Isn’t this how the Breeders got started?

I like Albert Hammond’s first solo release. When I heard he was making a second I begin to worry the Stroke’s were disbanding due to disagreements within the group. Releaved after reading this article, I was also surprised to found out the band dismissed Hammond’s songs for their 3rd release, which seemed to be a dissapointment. Although Your’s To Keep was less rock/punk, you can definitely hear Hammond’s contribution to The Strokes if not the head honcho. However, if the The Strokes, on extended break, want release anything for a while, I’ll check out Hammond’s 2nd release. As good as his last album was, I still will be ready for the edgier crooning, slash happy, and riffing from the The Strokes 4th release, I’m sure.
