The Who Kick Off North American Tour in Philly

9/13/06, 1:05 pm EST

On the opening gig of their North American tour at the Wachovia Center in Philly last night, the Who managed to electrify, reviving past glories and getting a shot of energy from their new material. For two-and-a-quarter hours, the duo — backed by drummer Zak Starkey and Townshend’s kid brother Simon on guitar — powered through dozens of songs from the Who’s upcoming album, Endless Wire (due October 30th), including the complete Wire & Glass “mini-opera.” (Apparently “operetta” sounds too fey, eh Pete?)

The new tracks seem to form another installment of the Who’s ongoing musical autobiography: “We Got a Hit” even directly quoted the “Substitute” guitar riff. Daltrey hit some clunker notes and even got tangled up in his own microphone cord while executing a baroque twirl, but nailed the climactic scream in “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” And hits like “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere,” “Who Are You,” and “My Generation” sounded sufficiently great. Townshend, as ever, had the last word: After the band flubbed the intro to “You Better You Bet,” he cracked, “See? The old stuff can sound just as crappy and unrehearsed as the new stuff.”

Face Dances is a classic. They still rock.

Ray | 9/13/2006, 3:54 pm EST

If any band should go down in Rock&Roll History, it’s The Who! While the female persuasion may consider them misogynists (aren’t all males?), they can still make the arm hairs stand on end. They look at the complications of love and the world and express it in originally crafted songs and ideas. Again, the female persuasion wants us to see their view on the world…but that’s the same old song. In my eyes, each Who song is A New Song! I’m certain that John and Keith are with them in Spirit…long live rock as well as The Who

John | 9/13/2006, 4:00 pm EST

Kudos to the old lads! I hope they stop in my neck of the woods – can’t wait to hear the new album.

“powered through dozens of songs from the Who’s upcoming album, Endless Wire” Gavin, there are reportedly 19 songs on ‘Wire and Glass.’How did they power through dozens of them. Are there no editors at Rolling Stone?

Sixie | 9/13/2006, 7:33 pm EST

The WHO, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, have induced a project in rock music felt never to happen by critics and wished on by WHO fans. “Endless Wire” is the new WHO album of our dreams. The reinvented WHO team of 2006 that will be touring North America is a happening. Don’t miss it.

Brandon | 9/13/2006, 7:46 pm EST

I was at the Philly show. Much of the concert was pretty good. All the required hits were played, the new stuff was interesting, and the looseness of the show was actually really enjoyable. Daltrey definitely nailed the scream in “won’t get fooled again.” But the concert didn’t achieve real greatness until the encore: Substitute, followed by Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, a truly unbelievable rendition of Underture, and See Me Feel Me / Listening to you. It was probably the best encore I’ve ever seen.

KEN VAIL JR | 9/13/2006, 10:26 pm EST

I am really excited about hearing a new WHO lp….’WIRE AND GLASS’ is an amazing track, I think. Bodes well for the lp in October. They are playing near here in december (grand rapids, michigan)….awesome!

Townshend probably wishes he could hear how great they sound. see kids, you gotta turn it down.

Maria | 9/14/2006, 7:44 am EST

Saw The Who last nigt at Jones Beach. Best show I ever saw, they were AWESOME!!

They get better with age!

Tom | 9/14/2006, 8:17 am EST

this Philly concert was the best concert I have ever been to!! The Who rocked and sounded great, but Roger Daltrey kept messing around with his earplugs, as if he couldn’t hear the music. Those guys must be fairly deaf now. Their next CD should be titled, “Who said that?” ha ha ha ha…

whoman | 9/14/2006, 8:23 am EST

Put them on the cover of Rolling Stone they deserve it. Greatest band in the world.

Sherry | 9/14/2006, 8:50 am EST

After seeing them in DVD in The Concert for New York – where they tore the house down, I’ve know that the Who still rocks and rules. Can’t wait to see them. They’re the best.

Chris | 9/14/2006, 9:08 am EST

WOW! The Who is “Still” a great live act & the new music has thatTownshend “Magic”.
Must See & Can’t wait for the new CD “Endless Wire” which will be released on WHOLLAWEEN!

Ebi | 9/14/2006, 10:24 am EST

I saw The Who so many times in the last 40 years, they always where the best live band I ever saw! In the actually European tour I enjoyed them in Bonn, Germany. They are still exitiing on stage, and I hope they come back to Germany next year to play more of the new album!

Scott | 9/14/2006, 11:36 am EST

Yes, definitely put The Who on the cover of Rolling Stone. When was the last time, for the 1989 tour? Be honest, Rolling Stone, if this were The Rolling Stones releasing their first new, full LP in 24 years, you’d put Mick and Keef on the cover, right? Yep. Put Toswnshend and Daltrey on the cover. Heck, put the whole band on there. The Who still are the best!

peace

joni | 9/14/2006, 11:59 am EST

i went to see the show last night at nikon jones beach! it was fantastic. all i can say is when these classic rock bands stop touring it will be the end of rock and roll as i know it and the end of me going to concerts. no new band can compare to the good old boys of rock and roll. The who still have it! long live rock!

JOAO | 9/14/2006, 12:06 pm EST

Rolling Stone editors is time to pay a fair tribute to the mighty WHO.

Gregg Swail | 9/14/2006, 4:34 pm EST

The most underrated band in history. My best band since I was 13 in 1978. I am now 41 and there is a Live at Leeds poster in my kitchen and Quadrophenia and Kids are Alright posters in other rooms. If they can rock at 60 so can I at 40+and every other fan. The band that will never fade away. Hope they get many new fans on this tour.My kids dig The Who also.

Don | 9/14/2006, 5:38 pm EST

Shame on Rolling Stone for not giving the WHO their due. Given the quality of the new stuff, you have to feature them and give them their proper homage!

Ron | 9/14/2006, 6:09 pm EST

The Who are and will be the best live band in the whole universe! Period, end of story. I’m taking my nine year old daughter to see them in Detroit on September 29th. It will be my seventh and her first! I can’t wait. Long Live Rock! Long Live The Who!!!

Jean hubert | 9/14/2006, 7:08 pm EST

I saw The Who in Amnéville in France
It was wonderfull and I hope I will see the band again.
Long live the WHO !!!!

Stefano | 9/14/2006, 7:57 pm EST

The best band of the universe.Their existence proves that God too exists. Their music is like air for me, I need it. I wonder why they don’t come to Italy since the late sixties, I really hope they will come, sooner or later. Better sooner. :-)

T | 9/14/2006, 8:16 pm EST

And to think the first time I saw them in 89 I didn’t want to go but reluctantly agreed when the guy I was with coudln’t find anyone else to go with him. I haven’t missed them since and the show in Philly was amazing. I went with my 15-year-old son — his second time seeing the show — first time was when he was 10!! They were amazing as always. Rog has the body of a 26 year old.

ANNA from Italy | 9/14/2006, 8:35 pm EST

Rock’n Roll will never die!!! Until Rog and Pete are around! Please stay “around” as long as you can! We need you! Thank you for the great work that you still do always with GREAT HEART! I have not the time (and the money!) for following you in the USA
but my heart is everynight with you in the front row!!!
Break a leg!

A kiss to Rog (I miss you!)

MONTY | 9/14/2006, 9:35 pm EST

I was at the opening night in Philly! Sounded great. The old songs and the new ones. Pete and Rog playing a new number just themselves was a show highlight. Get to one of their shows. I’m going again!

Don | 9/14/2006, 10:13 pm EST

THE WHO ARE THE WORLDS GREATEST ROCK BAND!!!!!!!!!!!

(sorry Stones)

Don | 9/14/2006, 10:55 pm EST

Pete Townshend IS GOD!

Kevin | 9/15/2006, 12:47 am EST

I went to the next show at Jones Beach on Long Island…WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!…Pete totally misses the mark on his soooo-boring diddy “Man in the Purple Dress”. Shame on him to poke fingers at people after what he’s done on the internet. (tsk tsk)….I am not alone in this opinion. The highlight of the evening is when a fan shouted: ‘SHUT THE F#@K UP!” during one of Pete’s drawn out monologues. I hate to break this to you folks, but The Who’s best days dried up more than 20 years ago! I was hoping to see what’s left of a great band playing their best, and I paid $275.00 for 40 minutes of time wasted on “new” material no one will buy or listen to after its first play.

Barry | 9/15/2006, 1:43 am EST

I went to the show at Jones Beach expecting to hear some of the new material and was pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t quite make out the lyrics and Pete’s guitar wasn’t loud enough. I’m not crazy about outdoor venues,(They looked freezing up there) but they did a great job. In response to “Kevin”: Why did you go to the show if you feel so strongly about what Pete did on the internet? I give Pete much credit for touring and moving forward after what happened. He’s obviously innocent. Through out his career he always said what was on his mind. Why should this change now? And, I’m sure the gentleman who heckled Pete is a very intelligent, artistic and opened minded individual. Was Pete supposed to sit back and let the guy interrupt and verbally abuse him? You are entitled to your opinion Kevin, but I disagree. I think Townshend’s guitar playing is better than ever. I hate to break it to you; but the best Who show I’ve ever seen was at MSG in 2002. It truly was amazing. I’m going to see them again at the Garden Monday night. I think they play best there.

angus | 9/15/2006, 2:11 am EST

without judging them….if you just listen to them…its fucking brilliant. its a shame john didnt live cause i think he would have dug this very much. rock.

Jeff from Philly | 9/15/2006, 3:17 am EST

Saw the show at the Wach. in Philly; Loved it!!! This was the 4th time I have seen The Who. Simon was good but John was the BEST and definately missed!!! Just saw Zac’s dad in AC and thought Zac as great as drummer as his dad. As far as the Roger and Pete and the new music, you guys are as good and as relevant as you were 40 years ago. Great job!!!

Steve B from Philly | 9/15/2006, 8:48 am EST

Seen the opening night Who show in Philadelphia. There were typical opening night problems but were covered up well.
The show itself was awesome from begining to the end. The new album was pretty good I thought. It was nice to see the boys again playing new material and also pulling out some songs they have not played live in ages………It was refreshing to say the least.I’m going again in November when they come back, wouldn’t miss it!!
Pino is a worthy replacement for Enwistle. Give him his due!!
Zak did an awsemoe gig on the skins.
The rabbit was good and steady as always as was Simon.
Daltrey while not having the range he used to(duH)was awesome going through two hours and 15 minutes gig.
Townsend is f…… nuts to begin with but played like a twenty year old!
Some of these young bands that think they are good and take breaks should catch the who live. They will learn something about touring and putting on a show!!

Mark | 9/15/2006, 8:52 am EST

Being the opening show of their North American tour, I thought that the Who were pretty awesome. Yes, there were some glitches during the set (couldn’t quite get the opening of “You Better You Bet”), yet the raw power of the band showed through. Roger’s singing was very good, considering his age,as well as Pete’s blistering guitar solos, especially on “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere” and “Relay”. “The Seeker” was a great and pleasant surprise, and the new stuff wasn’t too shabby either. Long Live Rock- Who style!!!!!

William | 9/15/2006, 10:11 am EST

Greatest rock band of all time!

Jack warner | 9/15/2006, 12:12 pm EST

Saw the shows in Philly and Jones beach
thanks God for artists like The Who and Robert plant who are willing to take a chance with new material while they could easily lean on their awesome past!
The shows sounded amazing in 2 quite different venues and the lights and visuals where stunning!!
Long Live Rock

Tom | 9/15/2006, 9:58 pm EST

Going to see The Who tomorrow night in Boston. It will be the fifth time I have seen the band live. No other band comes close to their stage presence and power. If you havent seen them yet, you havent seen true live rock. Don’t miss out, catch a show on this tour. It’s an unbelievable experience. It was sooo awesome seeing them outclass everyone at the Concert for New York in 2001. They proved they are the best period. Long live The Who!!!

martin | 9/16/2006, 9:30 am EST

THE WHO still can and will blow anybody off the stage. i agree with comments made that their the most underated band of the last 40 years. masters of their craft that no-one anywhere will come close to matching. its the songs that do it, no-one writes like townshend and daltrey is the perfect foil to the lyrics. live music is as near to musical art as you can get and the who never fail to produce high quality musical art. never in the history of rock has their been a band more consistant in their live playing. all should be measured by THE WHOS standards but then again all will fall short! cheers to oooo

David,40,Hull,England | 9/16/2006, 4:39 pm EST

Saw The Who at Hyde Park for the first time after waiting years to see them.Remember watching the Toronto farewell gig in 1982 and thinking “oh know look whats about to end”.I was in Canada at the time due to family emigrating and I am so glad they kept going. Fan always but finance etc made it hard.Roger, Pete and the rest of the band i want you to know it was worth the wait.Fantastic, never let me down and proved that the greatest rock band ever still have it.Cant wait to see them again soon, please do England again lads in 2007.I cant explain but to the naked eye there is no substitute, the Who better, you bet.

Mod is not dead | 9/17/2006, 3:30 pm EST

They are the best band in the world!I hope that they’ll come to Turkey before i get old. :D

Batman | 9/17/2006, 10:00 pm EST

Drove up from New York for the Boston show with my 17 year old son, (His 3rd who show since he was 7) and buddy Ray. The show was exuberant. Pete begins the evening telling us he had just hung up the phone with Jagger who was in Boston rehearsing with Keith and could not attend the gig…I Can’t Explain begins…This show kicked our asses, the new music is a blessing in disguise as it quite obviously gives Pete, and Roger as well a reason for being out on the road besides the money. So listen to it and absorb it. Zak propelled them, best I’ve ever heard Zak as he is breathing new life into to drum parts, and no one let up. Missed not hearing anything from Quadrophenia. Now we have Quad and By Numbers missing in action. Temporary at least for Quad I’m sure. This was my first Boston show ever and Boston clearly loves The Who. Pete was very comfortable, some tolerable chatting, nothing heavy. The Tommy encore was brilliant, loud, and deep with an acoustic finish with the Pete and Roger on “Tea and Theater” The Who defines rock and roll uniquely and without equal. Listen to the new music with open ears, and hearts.

scelsa | 9/18/2006, 2:28 pm EST

Stones still #1; who #2

RJB | 9/18/2006, 4:13 pm EST

Am I the only one who remembers that Rolling Stone gave “It’s Hard” FIVE stars??!??!?

Metalchick | 9/18/2006, 10:09 pm EST

I wish I had been there! but I do know that The Who Rocked that night!
We don’t need no haters here! The Who are the best rock band in the world, what would rock music today be like if we didn’t have The Who?

chicagohans | 9/20/2006, 1:49 am EST

Ladies and gentlemen,

The Who is the most interesting band in music history.

After more than 40 years of recording and performing they created Wire and Glass and in October The Endless Wire.
That’s not good, that is truly amazing.

I will love this band for the rest of my life, as i have been doing since i was 8.

manticore | 9/20/2006, 10:26 am EST

the best live band ever.fact.good as the stones are they dont have the songs that townshend has.

BIG MAN CAT | 9/20/2006, 2:53 pm EST

Saw both MSG shows – couldn’t stop myself. Seeing Townsend and Daltrey still doing it at this level is a great gift.

Another great gift: A Real Good Looking Boy. Is this one of Townsend’s great ones or what? 40 freaking years down the line and he can still nail it. Long live Pete, long live Roger, long live the band and long live everybody.

Gabe | 9/21/2006, 10:28 pm EST

The who , enough said.

History in the making , Tell you grand children that you saw them LIVE!!!

Anthony in NJ | 9/23/2006, 1:51 pm EST

Let me just say.. I was at the second MSG show, and the PNC show in NJ this week… WOW. They never stop amazing me! The new songs are AWESOME. I love them so much.. I want them to come back and play 20 more shows in NY.. I will be at all of them.. Let me just also respond to a measage I saw someone drop on here.. The stones were never better than The Who, and they never will be! anyone who knows where it’s at in rock and roll knows The Who is the greatest strongest most dynamic band that ever was! the stones don’t come close on any level other than maybe record sales. And by the way – It’s Hard deserves 5 stars – The Who never made a bad record.. and the new album is right up there amongst their best! I love you Pete! I love you Roger! I love You John, Keith, Kenny, Zack, Pino, Simon, and even Simon Phillips – I didn’t forget you either!

Foxie Cat | 10/1/2006, 5:57 pm EST

Dear mr. Townshend,

as a Dutchman and admirer of The Who, I would beg you to come to The Netherlands for a concert soon,
I would like to see The Who live, I’ve never ever seen you play.
