RS at Fashion Week: Taking in Hot Frocks and Burlesque with Interpol, 30 Seconds to Mars

9/13/06, 9:41 am EST

Oh Fashion Week, we are starting to get the hang of you. Yesterday evening began with a post-work taking in of the new collection by super-hyped designers Rodarte. The event – held in an airy gallery – rocked more than any of the actual fashion shows we’ve seen so far, with Television and Joy Division included on the soundtrack. The only downer: Other people had glasses of wine and it was impossible to find the bar.

dita von teeseAt least we’ve learned to recognize the signs of an important event, like the presence of Zooey Deschanel and Anna Wintour. Also in attendance: the Fiery Furnaces Eleanor Friedberger chatting with Karen Elson (the truly gorgeous if almost translucent wife of Jack White) and Interpol’s Carlos D.

As all the models started scampering out to their next shows, we split to meet up with our special Fashion Week guide, Dita Von Teese, at the Tag Heuer event where she was set to give the debut performance of her birdcage burlesque routine. Watch our video here. (RealPlayer required). Also in the crowd sipping champagne cocktails was the luminous Uma Thurman and (less luminous but really cute) Carmen Electra, plus the ubiquitous Jared Leto. Dita told us that the idea for this performance came from the music she dances to, a collection of vintage tracks culled by a friend from ’30s and ’40s records. Madonna could have entered during Dita’s performance and no one would have noticed, even Uma was standing right up front. Afterwards, the model-esque waiter boys served mini brownie ice cream sandwiches. Never seen those at a rock show.

is there a reason why Jared Leto is even mentioned in a “music” mag? 30 seconds to mars are terrible and he is just a posuer – I am sure he was there taking notes from Dita on how to put on a show

Pinkdot | 9/13/2006, 1:00 pm EST

i love how Dita is bringing back that burlesque glamour, she’s great, i wish i was that sexy and enticing

I love Dita , her shows look great , the music is really cool , wish i knew what it is

simms | 9/13/2006, 8:51 pm EST

When is she going to dance her way off the stage? I’m getting really bored with her publicity machine shoving her up front and touting her as the new “it” girl. She’s not even pretty and she’s boring as a stump. Let’s put some rhinestone and pasties on a girl with real classic looks and talent and call it an end to Dita Von Please.

Christine | 9/13/2006, 11:56 pm EST

Excuse Me.

Simms?

Who do you think you are? Let’s see you do that thing she does! You top her dancing and provocatuer skills and then you can bitch about what she does in her spare time.

If she wants to be in the public eye so more people will watch her show, then let her. And heaven forbid she should do something with her publicity, like campaign for breast cancer awareness and AIDS prevention. So maybe if she weren’t doing good things and maybe if you were like Lili St. Cyr, I’d listen to you bitch…..

simms | 9/14/2006, 12:50 am EST

Christine,
That is the stupidest argument I’ve ever heard. In other words, I can’t state an opinion unless I’m willing to do what she does. Hmmm…and what did I say about what she does in her spare time? Uh, nevermind. You’ll just defend her to the end because you’ve elected yourself a savior. But anyway, I don’t want to get into a fight with a fellow poster, so why don’t you just let me state my opinion without you taking it personally, okay? I’m sure you’re a very nice person who means well. Have a nice life.

metalgirl | 9/14/2006, 1:21 am EST

why are people getting so butt hurt about this? what’s the real issue here? why can’t women support each other rather than tear each other down? do we ever really see guys do this? just appreciate each individual for their own beauty and be done with this.

amanda | 9/14/2006, 1:28 am EST

Well said, metalgirl. I like Dita but I can see where someone else may be sick of always seeing her at the fashion shows. As a fan it doesn’t hurt me when someone doesn’t like her though. I do wish that she would go back to her “old Dita” self when she wasn’t such a sucker for the designer label, but oh well.

Suzie-Q | 9/14/2006, 10:27 am EST

Dita Von Horse Face. Has this women seen this sun this century? God,what a pasty, thin tool. You think she would at least get rid of that cellulite on those thighs!
Arrr.

UGLY GIRLS HATE DITA! | 9/14/2006, 1:15 pm EST

FAT COWS! GO ON A DIET & STOP WHINNING! YOU WISH YOU LOOKED HALF AS GOOD! HER PALE SKIN RULES! I HATE BROWN SKIN!

The real cow | 9/14/2006, 2:38 pm EST

If you hate “brown skin” you must be racist. I like pale skin but I just don’t think Dita’s pretty. By the way, to the last poster, you sound real pretty. Not!

Anita Bitton | 9/14/2006, 4:56 pm EST

DITA ROOOLLLLLZZZZ: How About Lose The Sour Grapes PEOPLE. She’s Amazing !

Dark hair | 9/14/2006, 5:25 pm EST

I’m not a real fan of Dita, but i do appreciate how her dark hair and everything promotes ethnic beauty. Props to her for that. She always reminds me of a Middle Eastern princess.

Mitchell the puzleman | 9/14/2006, 9:38 pm EST

DITA IS THE BEST BETTER THAN SUZIE Q EVER WAS/OR IS.
IF YOU TOOK THE BAG OFF YOUR FACE SUZIE PEOPLE WOULD SEE YOU

RubySodo | 9/15/2006, 12:19 am EST

Why can’t anyone just enjoy entertainment for what it is? If it doesn’t appeal to you, don’t fucking watch or click a button to see more…it is a choice. Dita Von Teese is one of the most beautiful women alive today. If you dont like her, fine…you dont have to but why put her down? This woman has literally brought fame and attention back to a dying art form. If you like tan and bimbo go to hustler. As far as Dita goes she is a true artist in all aspects…this is why SHE is at Fashion Week and you instead are sitting behind a computer monitor. She is perfect and has pefected a vintage look. Also, for the cellulite comment, your a dumb ass! I have seen this woman live and she doesnt have one dimple on her body. You on the other hand probably resemble a dog turd!

Blackdove | 9/15/2006, 4:57 am EST

Dita is truly beautiful, both inside and out. It really is a shame when people feel the need to do a person down to try and cover up their own insecurities. Dita is always gracious, friendly and respectful, people should learn from her example!

maryhell | 9/15/2006, 9:54 am EST

Do I detect some sour grapes… Dita IS beautiful and also a very very kind person, a true beauty, the Paris Hiltons and the like have their place but it no where near Dita’s. I have seen her perform live and it is amazing – to be fair she blew Manson of the stage….. And he was singing with no microphone to 70 people (I thought it could not get much better but it did)! That is NOT an easy task in my book!
Lets stop bitching and just enjoy looking a a true star – she is very similar to Betty Grable in her attitude to fans – a classy act.

Bean | 9/15/2006, 10:18 am EST

I think Dita’s style is awesome, and she is a very pretty lady. I still don’t get all the hipe about her performances? The costumes and props are very pretty but her moves are ok. It looks like she makes them up as she goes along. I mean I can count how many times she is going to raise her arm over her head and so on? Does anyone else agree?

Johanna | 9/15/2006, 10:33 am EST

I think Dita is a very beautiful woman and a self-marketing genius. But, she can NOT dance! She cant even manage to move her hips smoothly to a simple rythm, its like the bottom half of her body is mechanical. This makes it hard for me to understand the hype about her performances…it must be all about the costumes.

Bean | 9/15/2006, 11:39 am EST

I agree J, even the ballet that I have seen in not that impressive. I think she is just the it girl right now and eventually her 15 minutes will be up. I’m not making any accusations but, it sure helps to be married to Marilyn Manson also, lot’s of connections.

maryhell | 9/15/2006, 12:33 pm EST

When I saw her perform she really could move, she was very graceful and just a dream to watch as she tiptoed around the edge of the giant glass. When I watch her video footage she does not look as graceful as she is live, Live she really IS that good. Oh and to change the subject have you seen bettie Page move in her videos? I love that lady but boy she sure cant dance!

Sour Grapes | 9/15/2006, 1:36 pm EST

Okay why is it sour grapes to comment on how you don’t understand the hype? I came over here to check out about Fashion Week so I did and now I’m commenting about Dita. Not everyone just looks up Dita and decides to complain. Dita is a breath of fresh air, but I think she’s only the beginning to something better – someone with more wit and glamour. Most people will look back at her and will think wow she was someone who made the best of what we knew at that time but look at how good that other newer person has made it seem! I love the black hair and pale skin though. And I’m a guy so this isn’t sour grapes

aye aye | 9/15/2006, 6:39 pm EST

sour grapes, indeed well said! dita is the start of the future.

mom von teese | 9/17/2006, 9:58 pm EST

she really is beautiful insde and out

Fashionista | 9/18/2006, 12:46 am EST

Maybe she is beautiful inside and out but she seems catty to me when she has said things publicly about other famous people being jealous of her, like her photographer’s model-wife. Doesn’t it seem like only a slightly nasty person would do something like that? I’m sure there are lots of people jealous of her, but to always insinuate yourself and in public is not very nice or beautiful.

jonny | 9/24/2006, 7:54 pm EST

jonny

branwen | 9/30/2006, 8:54 pm EST

um does anyone no the music in the back gorund band name or song name

Domidroid | 11/2/2006, 3:08 pm EST

I think a call to balance is in order here. Yes, Dita is a pretty girl with a good show, but that’s it. No “Goddess”, or “Most Beautiful”. There are a million Goth girls, and they basically all look the same. Dita’s good at placing herself in the
“right crowds”, which is the real secret of her success.

Domidroid | 11/2/2006, 3:22 pm EST

PS.Sour grapes, you sound most like my husband’s response to her, which was, “She just looks kind of empty and boring.” I don’t entirely agree, but it IS amazing how publicity worx, people really do basically like what they’re told to.

Stimme der Vernunft | 11/28/2006, 10:18 am EST

@Schulz
even if you think 30stm are terrible it’s still music they do and many people like it

Stevenson | 3/18/2007, 1:31 pm EST

Nothing’s New Under The Sun! Dita’s not new, she copied other Burlesque performers. To me, she looks like Demi Moore. However, I think Evan Wood is a better newer version of Dita. Blondes are IT for me. Dita’s lokking old with that black over dyed hair do. And no, Dita is NOT a great performer. I think Catherine D Lish is WAY better than Dita! Although, I appreciate Dita’s pin up work.

missi | 11/5/2007, 2:20 pm EST

Evan’s gross!
