Reunion Rumor Madness, Featuring Van Halen and The Faces

9/12/06, 1:48 pm EST

Rod Stewart and Eddie Van Halen

Those old school rockers sure know how to tease. Though Rod Stewart insisted to us not long ago that a Faces reunion would never happen, he’s apparently changed his mind, saying, “It’d be great to put the band together for charity, a one-off event. Ronnie is always up for it, so’s Ian and Kenney.” But even Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan worries Stewart’s talking crazy. “Kenney [Jones] wants it to happen, I want it to happen, Woody wants it to happen. Rod talks about it, but he never does anything about it. He’d enjoy it … but I think he wouldn’t want to split the money like we used to. He could make me a millionaire in three weeks if he wanted.”

Meanwhile, Eddie Van Halen appeared on the Howard Stern show Friday morning to discuss his recent projects: curing cancer, scoring porn films, and reuniting Van Halen. You can pick up a copy of the adult film Sacred Sin tomorrow at a fine video establishment near you, but beware – playing guitar with a metal pick can cause cancer. At least, Van Halen thinks that’s what gave him tongue cancer (forget all that smoking); he went on to say that he and a friend cured his cancer with a secret treament they developed together. As for the reunion, Van Halen said that a reunion with David Lee Roth isn’t out of the question (gasp) and he also said he will next record an album with his son Wolfgang — who has appeared onstage with Eddie in the past, and is now apparently a “dangerous” talent — and his brother Alex.

I think Ronnie Wood already has a good gig (with the Stones). I don’t see him complying with a reunion of the Faces, especially if they have to play some of Rod’s solo stuff.

I don’t see Wood enjoying a run-through of the great American songbook or “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy”.

nurserock1 | 9/12/2006, 3:52 pm EST

I think Dave would be making a mistake to rejoin anything but the “CLASSIC VAN HALEN”
Did you ever think there would be a day when DLR could “Do the right thing by Van Halen?” While EVH looks like a nut?

Steve Bonds | 9/12/2006, 4:23 pm EST

Ian toured with Rod on his Unplugged tour in 1993 – and of course Ronnie appeared on the album. Clearly there’s not a ton of animosity so it could happen. It’s highly doubtful they would do any of Rod’s solo material during a reunion show other than the songs they originally appeared on, i.e. Maggie Mae. It’s not like Cream did any of Clapton’s solo songs last year. The real question is about how much money Rod is willing to share and whether or not the Stones current tour is ever going to end so Ronnie could join them. I’m sure they would sound great, but I’m not sure I would be willing to shell out the cash. I enjoyed the Cream show at MSG last year, but you can only afford so many $350 tickets. Having seen Ronnie with the Stones and Rod and Ian together already on what was probably Rod’s best latter-day tour, I think I’m pretty satisfied. The last great record Rod released was When We Were The New Boys. Since then it’s been way far downhill. Maybe a Faces reunion would help him find his way again. I could always buy the DVD…

Richard | 9/12/2006, 4:57 pm EST

Eddie Van Halen needs to just go away.

Scoring PORN fims?

How pathetic is he now?

Until the inevitable Roth/Van Halen reunion happens (and of course, it will) – why can’t these two idiots simply GO AWAY???

Eddie Van Halen is a guitar GOD – now, he isn’t even a peasant.

Steve | 9/12/2006, 5:07 pm EST

Though I’d love to see VH back with Diamond Dave…it could be a disapointment. Dave clearly doesn’t have the voice he once had and he’s more unstable than ever…now it seems, so is EVH.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be at the show, maybe a couple of ‘em and I’d enjoy it that’s for fuckin sure.

cari loves coldplay | 9/12/2006, 5:10 pm EST

Anytime i read the name Eddie Van Halen….i just kinds cringe….
the things people do when they need money….it’s sad

Satan | 9/12/2006, 5:25 pm EST

I think the big question is…What does Ronnie Lane think of this Faces reunion news???

AlienDude | 9/12/2006, 5:57 pm EST

Maybe DLR should join the Faces and EVH can make porno music with Rod Stewart and call it Deep Strepped Throat, or Ogdens ButtFucks.

Jake | 9/12/2006, 6:11 pm EST

Van Halen is the WORST band ever. I’m not overracting. They were just plan awful. Everything they ever did.

Eddie is an idiot who needs to stop embarrassing himself. Why doesn’t he just get his own reality t.v. show and get it over with? We all know thats where this is heading.

ishmael | 9/12/2006, 6:18 pm EST

Actually, if you read further into the recent Rod Stewart interview, he says that he wouldn’t consider a tour, merely a one-off for some significant event (i.e. an induction ceremony or a charity). So I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that it could happen. But it wouldn’t make anybody a millionaire (especially if it’s for a charity), unless all members got an agreed-upon percentage of DVD sales.

As for Van Halen, I’ve seen both “Van Hagar” and DLR solo within the past few years, and to be honest, it’s going to be a bit of a let-down (especially DLR), as both are obviously past their prime. But hey, it would be fun and it would make money, so what the hell.

But why didn’t RS make a blog out of “Top 10 Bands We’d Like to See Reunite?” Now that Floyd has done the one-off reunion thing, my money would be on Led Zep (with Jason Bonham on drums), even though Robert Plant has lost his upper register, or Roxy Music (with both Eno & Ferry).

That said, some people should just know when to quit. That whole Cars reunion thing was a fiasco even before it got postponed indefinately (I can understand no Ben Orr – the man’s dead; but no Rick Ocasik – WTF?), and the less said about Paul Rodgers + Queen, the better.

Jazz | 9/12/2006, 6:51 pm EST

Eddie, its to bad you didn’t die with cancer. At least you would have gone out with dignity. Instead, you are going to flog this reunion crap, and suffer a more painful end.

Johnny Hardcock | 9/12/2006, 7:25 pm EST

I’d love to see the Best Bar Band in the World reunite, but not if they’re playing the Astrodome…or any post-’73 material.

Van Halen, they’re still around?

Personally, I think Rod the Bod should pick up the mic for Van Halen. That’d be the greatest, stupidest, funniest thing ever. At least it’s be better than an fourth installment of either an American Songbook album or a Van Halen self-titled.

sam | 9/12/2006, 7:43 pm EST

Ishmael, I may be wrong on this one, but I believe RS did run a top 10 bands we’d like to see reunite quite recently.

Bill | 9/12/2006, 7:45 pm EST

I think a Faces reunion playing only their material, along with the early solo material of Rod Stewart would be great!

Erik E Erik | 9/12/2006, 8:10 pm EST

Who the hell is David Roth? I thought the VH reunion was gonna have my man Gary Cherone in it! Do VHIII track-by-track; I’ll be there!! I don’t want to go to see David Roth sing Gary Cherone’s songs!! Get the real deal, Eddie!!

JLI | 9/12/2006, 8:10 pm EST

Eddie Van Halen is one of the best guitar players ever. I can’t understand why he just can’t make a solo record. Forget Hagar and Roth and just make an album that features nothing but great guitar playing. An all instrumental album would be interesting. Might not sell a million copies but I ‘m sure some people would buy it. Maybe he just doesn’t have it anymore. Look at what Jimmy Page has done since Led Zep ended. Nothing worth mentioning.

KEN VAIL JR | 9/12/2006, 8:11 pm EST

I have always loved EDDIE VAN HALEN….why doesn’t he do an lp like Jeff Beck…some wacky instrumental lp??? I would love to see VAN HALEN w/ Roth…..they better do it soon, before it gets too embarassing….and a FACES reunion would kick ass!

Rob | 9/12/2006, 10:16 pm EST

Hey guess what? I’m done buying this crap about Van Halen reuniting with Roth. As a matter of fact, I’m done buying the idea that Van Halen will EVER have a permanent lead singer again. Whoever they end up with, whether its Roth or some other chumpster like Gary Cherone, will last a maximum of a couple years and then it’ll be back to square one again. So, I choose to ignore any future ideas of Van Halen, and am content to enjoy the classic recordings…yanno, from way back when the words “Van Halen” and “shred guitar” actually meant something.

John | 9/13/2006, 12:45 am EST

WE need Van Halen…look at our options…..we need Van Halen and we need Guns N Roses…RIGHT NOW!!! god help us all….there hasnt been a good rock record since Nirvna’s In Utero….someone save us

Angus Von Danzig | 9/13/2006, 2:39 am EST

Q: Does anyone care about a Van Halen reunion? A: Aging yuppies with the cash to buy a $300 ticket do! Who cares! I’ll listen to the classic albums and am more than happy doing that. The magic is over, done and finished. Stop jumping all over this pipedream reunion. EVH should do a solo album ala’ Santana with different classic vocalists Roger Daltry, Phil Collins, Paul Stanley, , Robert Plant, David Coverdale, Ozzy, Dio, Rob Halford, Paul Rogers, Ann Wilson, Bono, and as a bonus DLR or Sammy. What vocalist wouldn’t fall all over themselves to work with Eddie, the #70 guitarist per Rolling Stone.

Angus Von Danzig | 9/13/2006, 2:44 am EST

Here’s the truth. Eddies got a blown hip and 1/3 of his tongue is missing. DLR has a combover and won’t be doing the jumping splits off the drum riser. Sammy’s got some pounds on him and obviously not keeping up with the cardio, ditto with Michael Anthonly. Last time I saw Alex VH perform life that guy had a neck brace on! If you want to see classic Van Halen then watch VH1 classic because that is the only place your going to see him!

Jeff | 9/13/2006, 2:52 am EST

Eddie is a tweaker. Just look at him. Put down the meth, the cigarettes, and the wine…and stick around for that ‘dangerously talented’ kid of yours, you brilliant idiot.

He’s also the greatest rock guitar player on the planet. Like I said, a brilliant idiot.

Laurens from Indonesia | 9/13/2006, 5:14 am EST

Guys, guys. Eddie is half Indonesian. Did you know that?

Whatever | 9/13/2006, 6:27 am EST

My opinion is that EVH is one of the greatest rock guitarists ever. His body of work is too little for the time he has been around. Look at Jimi Hendrix’ body of work for the short period of time he was with us. It’s incredible. I’d like to see an instumental record a’la Joe Satriani. Eddie could have his brother with him on drums of course. He needs to forget the singers because he obviously doesn’t like it when he can’t be all controlling in the band. That being said, Eddie is crazy. He and a friend developed a cure for his tounge cancer that he contracted from using a metal pick? What a LooneyTune! Eddie needs to get on with recording something and just stop talking.

For the Love of... | 9/13/2006, 7:27 am EST

First to ‘Jazz’…excellent addition to the conversation here. You are Idiot #1. Congratulations! And then on to ‘Jake’…amazing how VH are the worst band ever and they are one of the best selling bands of all time. But then again so is Bon Jovi, so what do I know…other than you are Idiot #2. Fanfare please.

Sanchez | 9/13/2006, 8:53 am EST

How did EVH cure his cancer? Switching from the Marlboro Red pack to the Gold one? Genius.

Schultz | 9/13/2006, 9:52 am EST

Being a big VH fan from way back, it is terribly sad to see the levels EVH has stooped to try to stay relelvant. Scoring porn flicks – way to be a role model for Wolfy, eh?

And a cure for cancer? You would think he and his bud could present that to the FDA and make some real money helping real people… o wait, not all of us use metal picks…

sad sad days indeed

ford | 9/13/2006, 9:59 am EST

i’ll take velvet revolver over these has beens , anyday..

P | 9/13/2006, 10:22 am EST

EVH still has talent. Too many people die with the music still in them. However it comes out, it should be accepted. Buy it or not, it’s not like he is physically IN it. Bash him for associating himself with pornos, but then turn around and give Mike Jones MTV awards, Grammys, and endless awards… when he openly admits he got started writing theme songs for strippers! Yes yes, lets idolize THAT upstanding citizen.
If it works great, if not, don’t knock him for it. Not all endeavors are the best, sometimes it’s just for fun. Is Paul McCartney still considered an “Icon”? Of course. Everyone thinks “Yesterday”.. but never that song he did with Michael Jackson! Any they said he could do no wrong?
Is it unlikely for a musician to know more than just music? Sure, cause look at the musicians we have today. EVH spent a good 8 years in and out of hospitals, day in and night out with his treatments and surgeries. He may not have gone to Med School, but you pick up on a few things from living like that…anyone would! And FACT: He’s cancer free. So why not hear how?

Person man | 9/13/2006, 10:45 am EST

FORD , You’re a cock ! What a stupid thing to say , I’m not the biggest Van Halen fan , but Velvet revolver ? C’mon .

Jake | 9/13/2006, 10:50 am EST

To For the Love Of-

Glad you pointed out the Bon Jovi thing. Wanna know some more of the highest selling artists? How about Britany Spears? N’Sync? KISS? Motley Crue? Snoop Doog?

Anyone who kows anything about music knows that the more you sell, the worse you are. Except in a few cases (The Beatles, ect.)

And hey, I may be an idiot, but that doesn’t mean the whole reality t.v. show isn’t going to happen sooner or later. It’s Eddie Van Halen we’re talking about. He’ll sell out faster than anything.

Person man | 9/13/2006, 10:52 am EST

JAZZ
And you you prick !
So we should feel great if you died !
Wake up cockhead !
That’s so fuckin unecessary !
Post real rock comments please !

Dizzle | 9/13/2006, 1:38 pm EST

If these VH clowns get “back together”, it’ll be alla Motley Crue. They’ll do 1 tour and grab as much cash as they can, before they become a footnote in music history. The only people who even care are the ones who never left 1985…

Dr. B | 9/13/2006, 2:11 pm EST

Hey, I like 1985! Let’s all go back…

Jolen | 9/13/2006, 10:44 pm EST

hows about someone kinda good reuniting? Its like now that theyve exhausted all oppportunities to get money now they want to go back. I’ll say that thats real late. Like 20 yrs too late.

AlienDude | 9/13/2006, 11:18 pm EST

Just listened to the new Peter Frampton Cd, Fingerprints. Excellent. All instrumentals, including a great cover of Black Hole Sun, with members from Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.
He’s got a great band, and it’s fantastic guitar on all tracks. Are you listening, Eddie?

Mr. Tim | 9/14/2006, 7:59 am EST

David Lee Roth?
Carol Channing
separated at birth?

Mike27 | 9/14/2006, 6:09 pm EST

wow Dizzle is sure a moron. Nice to see some 12 year olds on here – go listen to your gay Panic at the shitco, chump.

Michael | 9/19/2006, 10:08 am EST

Eddie needs to quit drinking and smoking and save his life first. Then he needs to be a father for what little time he has left with Wolfgang until he turns 18 and flys the coop. Music should be third on his priority list.
You can see the effect of his “lifestyle” on the YouTube video of him playing at the Kenny Chesney concert.
He did play recently at a benefit concert for House of Petals in LA with a drummer other than Alex and a keyboard player that has worked for Madonna and scored movies (http://www.vanhalenmusic.com/ 2006/07/21/eddie-performs-at-h ouse-of-petals/).
Drinking and smoking, he seems not to care for himself much anymore, and the playing was OK at best.
I do think it is great he tried playing with different folks – a good way to avoid the Roth and reunion garbage that surrounds him. Working on movie soundtracks would be a good way to distance himself from what was great 25 years ago.
I would like to see him live and make some more music that surprises us.

I hope you people aren’t around to judge when I pass from this world, wow! Has your life turned out to be everything that you expected? Ed was and is a prodigy on guitar…but, life happens to us all. It’s called being human. Live and forgive, people, please!

korg_alpine | 9/25/2006, 4:07 pm EST

I saw Roth in Reno two nights ago and he still has it in him. It was like a VH greatest hits show and I had a great time. I saw VH with Sammy in Denver in ‘04 and although it was cool to see Mike sing SGM a Doctor and touching to see Ed’s kid on stage with him, Sammy performance was “phoned in” and left me wanting the real thing. I think Ed and Al owe it to us god damn it. Just tour with Dave already! What else you doin? Playing golf? Please.

OU812 | 9/27/2006, 10:49 am EST

HMMM… LEMME THINK, WHY IS IT THAT AT LEAST 1/2 THE YOUNG PEOPLE THAT I KNOW, AGES 12-25 LISTEN AND LIKE MUSIC FROM MY ERA, YOU KNOW THE 70′S AND 80′S….PROBABLY BECAUSE OF MOST OF THE CRAP THAT IS OUT THERE NOW DOESN’T HOLD A CANDLE TO GROUPS LIKE VAN HALEN WITH SAM OR DAVE, AEROSMITH DEF LEPPARD, THE WHO, LED ZEPPLIN, GUNS AND ROSES…MUST BE SOMETHING TO THAT DONTCHA THINK!!! IF YOU AINT IN WITH THAT THEN WE GOT TWO WORDS FOR YAH!!!
