Last week we managed to get onto the Montreal set of Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan movie, “I’m Not There.” The biggest news? Cate Blanchett is going to blow you away with her breathtakingly accurate take on mid-Sixties Dylan (in case you hadn’t heard: yes, she plays him as a dude). The film’s soundtrack, which features rockers covering Bob, is also looking intriguing: For a segment based on Dylan’s 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance, Steve Malkmus has already recorded “Maggie’s Farm” and “Ballad of a Thin Man” with a band that includes Dylan bassist Tony Garnier, in a session produced by Sonic Youth’s Lee Renaldo. My Morning Jacket’s Jim James is also contributing music, along with many others, and Haynes says he’s not having trouble finding contributors: “What artist wouldn’t want to do their favorite Dylan cover?” he said. The film splits Dylan into multiple characters — Richard Gere, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger are among the actors who play other Bob incarnations. Look for more details from the film in an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, on stands in early October.

It’d be great if they had Donovan play one of the roles of Dylan. He’s been trying to do it his entire career.
Steve | 9/12/2006, 3:16 pm EST
They should have Dylan play Dylan in one of the “incarnations”.
Dulcimer | 9/12/2006, 4:16 pm EST
Totally great. It’s like those “doing the pirate thing” people keep talking about–we should all just be free, be fun, and be ourselves.
Dylan does!

Get this sucka’s- DAVID CROSS is gonna be in this!! He BETTER play Dylan! Or that beat poet guy. Allen something-or-other.
ishmael | 9/12/2006, 6:24 pm EST
Jake:
That’s “Allen something-or-other” would be Ginsberg. Read “Howl.”
‘Nuff said.
Steve:
Careful what you wish for. The minute you cast Dylan in a movie, it’s almost guaranteed to be crap (unless it’s a documentary).
Can’t wait to see what Cate Blanchett does. This could be cool.

OK YOU ZIMMY WACKO’S. DON’T LOOK ANY FURTHER THAN “THE WEDDING SINGER” ADAM SANDLER LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE MR. DYLAN
auramac | 9/15/2006, 10:54 pm EST
Yeesh, people have enough trouble trying to figure out when and if Dylan resembles Himself (as they see him)! ‘Cause, of course, everyone wants him to be “just like them..”
Should be quite interesting. I think Jakob D., or Tom Kavanaugh would be interesting as well.
minnborn | 9/16/2006, 12:13 pm EST
The film sounds as eclectic as Dylan himself. Probably suits him right. Mr. Enigmatic Bob Dylan seems to have a hard time figuring out who he is all by his lonesome let alone having someone else trying to portray him. It sounds confusingly interesting. But then again I love anything Dylan.

Yeah, this movie is being done, at least I hope so by some professors at the UNI NSW, who were having a chap with me about 7 months ago, regarding one of their staff members apparently.
I had to think real quick, it being a post graduate university person involved in the politics of English and replied, Oh I’m Bob Dylan. I had to say because they stole all my identity. So, I hope the movie is about that. That staff member? Here’s a story.
I won’t tell you. But the Lutheran church 1000 miles away, has nnow changed all their logos on the housing and flats to be almost the same as a note about Rosicrucians I’d sent. So, now Bob Dylan is a moviee about some who IS Bob Dylan, and they think it’s me. Who’s Kate Blanchette anyway?
Nice one Mr. Dylan. Just what I needed to know. See, I think those academics are terrorists. Don’t tell anyone though.

Oh one of their blue and white mini minor cooper cars just drove by. They followed me 1500 kms to sydney. maybe they’re this kate blanchet movie?
CGEffect | 10/12/2006, 4:31 pm EST
I say this with the upmost confidence: Cate Blanchett out of all the “Dylans” will resemble him the most. Blah, I hate Heath Ledger. Him with a Minnesota accent equals unintentional hilarity.

i think that john cusack would be a better bob than richard gere.. at to hell with it let jack black play bob!
RobJames | 11/10/2006, 12:14 pm EST

He wasn’t so stoned with could understand what the hell he was singing.Someone tell Bob the 1960’s is over.
jake | 5/6/2007, 9:36 pm EST
why isn’t adam sandler playing him? he looks just like him and sings too
Matthew | 6/5/2007, 9:52 pm EST
This is the movie event of the year, by far! Dylan is such a cryptic and complicated character, it’s no surprise it took multiple actors to figure him out. Like Bono once said, there’s so many sides to Bob, he’s round!
Would Cate be nominated as Best Actress…or Best Actor?

I can’t believe people have the nerve to put down a movie about the most influential song writers of our time,….if this movie is only half accurate, it will be nothing short of amazing, although I think they should have kept obey one as dylan,….he did a fantastic job in “factory girl”
patrick | 9/3/2007, 12:26 am EST
hasn’t anybody seen Adam Sandler in Reign Over Me? If he isn’t the perfect Bob then I don’t who is.
Cheryl | 9/5/2007, 2:36 pm EST
I was lucky to view ‘I’m Not There’ at Telluride. Without any preconceived notions and not really interested in the subject…I was totally blown away!! It brought me back to my teen years and the whole concept of the film made so much sense. Bob Dylan was the spokesman for me in the ’60’s and I learned all the words to his songs. Cate Blanchett did an incredible job. I had numerous discussions with people who ‘didn’t get it’…I can’t wait for the sound track to come out.
wow. | 11/12/2007, 4:05 pm EST
good luck with that. interesting on how ALL those actors are going to keep a similar pitch.. whatever that is on his voice????
dink | 3/1/2008, 8:48 pm EST
I love Bob Dylan an have since i was 16, which is several years ago. I cannot imagine Richard Gere playing any part of Dylans life. Whats wrong with Bob playing
Bob as he gets older. I plan on seeing the movie an will probably buy the dvd when it’s released because it’s about his life, but i’m a little iffy about the actors!
