When Worlds Collide: U2 to Record With Green Day

9/8/06, 8:00 am EST

u2 green dayBono revealed major U2 news to writer Michka Assayas (author of the 2005 interview collection, Bono On Bono) yesterday, confirming long-standing rumors that the band has been working with producer Rick Rubin on its latest album. According to the fansite U2log.com, the group is hunkered down in London for a three-week session. Apparently, Bono & Co. have been doing most of their writing outside the studio, bringing only “extraordinary” songs to Rubin to record. Bono also told Assayas that U2 is planning to record a cover of a song by Scottish punk band the Skids with California punk trio Green Day (also in the studio cutting songs for a new disc). Two hot tips in one! How’s that for a Friday morning pick-me-up?

Bono needs to quit trying to save the world and make some good music.John and Yoko couldn’t save it.That is the reason we have Jesus and from what I’ve seen most people dont listen to him either.U2 are so love, they put out crap now a days and people like me still buy it.

Saintjimmy101 | 9/17/2006, 3:49 pm EST

Look, Greendays songs mean something. They’re are sellouts because people like them. I love every album they’ve came out with. They should jsut stay and not side with U2. Greenday is the best punk band still out they’re now. Same with Blink182, Misfits, Etc.

shaggy13 | 9/11/2006, 11:11 am EST

That’s crazy
by the way I just found a really cool online dating and matchmaking service for singles called Keywordlove (www.keywordlove.com). What’s the best part about this site? It’s FREE!!

Punkimaster | 9/10/2006, 11:38 pm EST

SELLOUTS!!!! 2 BIG SELLOUTS!!! 2 lead singers who think they are intelligent enough to run the country because they have a little fame and money! So we have to listen to their politics in thier 2 minute pop songs that have about as much meaning and depth as a clean piece of paper!!! If you want to hear U2 and Greenday, go buy the Joshua Tree and Dookie, don’t bother with their postfame crap, its a scam!

fndr2u | 9/10/2006, 9:01 pm EST

maybe these guys can play something interesting together do you dweebs really think either band really needs the money?

utzpinpin | 9/10/2006, 6:52 pm EST

Selling out or not? the answer is, tell me of one band who hasn’t? in the end this is ALL a business baby, just pure business, from the sex pistols to mariah.

The Dharma Bum | 9/10/2006, 5:46 pm EST

Cartman, your obviously retarded. Green Day suck about as much as U2. Imagine…2 of the biggest sell-outs on the one song! Now if they could only work Elton John in there somewhere.

matt | 9/10/2006, 4:21 pm EST

the good news is that u2 is working with Rick Rubin

the bad news is that u2 is working with Rick Rubin and collaborating with Green Day for an obscure cover.

Looks like u2 will forever remain a band that was best when serving albums like War, The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby.

That new album didn’t deserve Album of the Year. And Green Day is playing the same fucking song over and over.

Rick Rubin’s production on Stadium Arcadium, and the new System of a Down albums, were bland. Frusciante made his band’s album. System of a Down’s new ones were ok.

That’s what this news is BLAND.

Xgirl | 9/10/2006, 2:47 pm EST

GO CARTMAN!!!

cartman | 9/10/2006, 2:01 am EST

blah, go out and buy yourself some tastebuds because you obviously have no taste in music. Green Day is one of the best rock bands out there at the moment and you are one of the few who are completely clueless to this fact. I’m sure you enjoy listening to crappy bands like Rush because of their intricate guitar structure or whatever. However, you are clueless to the fact these bands suck. Green Day rules, and whatever they put out has rocked and will continue to rock, I have no further comment.

blah | 9/9/2006, 11:38 pm EST

green day sucks horribly, they need a little bit of talent. I know 10th graders that play guitar better than the billie whatever. maybe U2 will give them a little bit of talent, or green day will suck out U2’s talent. w/e. its prolly one of the uninteresting collaborations EVER.

fan | 9/9/2006, 11:25 pm EST

I love U2 and think they still are an amazing band today. They’re still way better than a lot of the bands today. As for Green Day I wasn’t to keen on them until AI. I don’t think they’re that great of a band but I can’t wait to hear the song. I’m sure it’ll be interesting if not fantastic.

Flan | 9/9/2006, 11:12 pm EST

Having reader comments in backwards order is really confusing.

PATT AUREOLES | 9/9/2006, 8:59 pm EST

YEAH BONO!! YOUR MUSIC REALLY CAN TOUCH THE SOUL SO YOU ARE THE BEST FOR THAT CHALENGE, EVEN WHEN YOU BOTH HAVE TO FIGHT Vs THE PEOPLE MOORE INSENSIBLE (ANIMAL). CONGRATULATIONS & KISSES & A BIIIIG HUG

80's Gurl | 9/9/2006, 7:31 pm EST

I am too going to agree, they are huge sellouts! They both changed their style of music to appeal to wider audience and in turn “alienated their one-time fans… as for Axl? Listen to the new Guns N Roses material, it is here to save our souls, I have to thank RockGod for posting that comment, GnR will save us like they did in the late 80’s!

ultraviolet624 | 9/9/2006, 5:47 pm EST

Why isn’t anyone talking about the real news - Rick Rubin being the producer for U2’s next album? That’s the best U2-related news I’ve heard in ages. Maybe Rubin can help U2 find their way out of the bland, by-the-numbers musical rut they have been in for the past six years so they can start making some truly powerful, interesting music again. If Rubin could get Neil Diamond to sound good, think what he could do with U2!

common sense | 9/9/2006, 4:50 pm EST

I agree with the poster about the interesting possibilities with this. Without a doubt, U2 (and not just Bono) have collaborated, composed, and genuinely worked WITH more artists and performers than any music act in history…so much so that I’m not surprised anymore when I hear of their fingerprints somewhere on music history.

From assuming ‘command’ of punk after the death of Joy Division’s lead to giving guitar soul for Mary J…who haven’t they worked with? They played Sgt. Pepper’s with Paul, contributed themes for Batman, James Bond and Mission Impossible, wrote for Frank Sinatra, combined N*Sync with REM, gave BB his swagger back, revitalized Leonard Cohen, dueled with the Stones, pirated with Depp…hell, sang the words of Satanic Verses Rushdie himself. They swaggered with Cash and convinced the Gates’ to be generous… come on, who haven’t they affected?

What about just last year? They took on a more dazzling variety of acts (new and old) than has ever been done…seriously, a tour that included the Killers, Dashboard Confessionals, Keane, and Kanye? Patti Smith and Eddie Vedder? Love or hate them all you want, but it’s hard to deny their certainly the most respected rock group of our era…somehow BOTH commercially and critically.

Who cares about Africa? Well, if you don’t want another source for more acts of terrorism in your homeland, you should care. And simply throwing money at a problem has never worked. Action speaks louder and Bono has done more for the African cause than 99.9 percent of the population in the Western world. Until you’ve worked for this kind of cause, even to end poverty in your own community, you should really stop making yourself sound like an idiot.

Honestly, I wonder if the people who make such ignorant comments even have the power to the think. No wonder Bush got elected president twice.

A U2/Green Day collaboration doesn’t surprise me considering U2 have collaborated with such a huge range of performers including Pavarotti, Cash, Willie Nelson, Sinatra, Wyclef Jean, Leonard Cohen, B.B. King, Andrea Corr, etc…. It could be good. It could be crap. It’ll be interesting all the same.

For the record, selling out is doing something nafe for money. U2 have never used their music to sell a car, a toaster, or a home cleaning product. The only time their music has been used in a promotional sense is when the band was promoting themselves and their music. For instance, when U2 joined with Apple on the iPod idea, the band made NO money from the sale of the iPods themselves. They made their cash off the digital box set of music they distributed through iTunes. The term “selling out” gets thrown around way too liberally. Check what the term actually means before shouting it out. You only make yourself sound like a jackass if you use it in the wrong context.

This is the only post that matters in this whole discussion.

Jeff | 9/9/2006, 2:22 pm EST

Finally, those of us wondering what Green Day would sound like if they were crushingly boring can be answered thanks to U2.

Craig | 9/9/2006, 11:52 am EST

Yes, as posted below, Stuart Adamson was “that bloke from Big Country that killed himself.” He was the lead singer, guitarist, chief songwriter, etc. Wrote hit after hit, at least in Europe. Also lead guitarist of the Skids, whose playing inspired The Edge to play guitar like he does. Some might say he ripped Stuart off. The thought of Green Day covering Stuart’s work is disturbing, but maybe this will draw more attention to a truly talented man who was much more than just a suicide victim.

serves0mebody | 9/9/2006, 9:50 am EST

I hate u2 and i hate green day…these are two bands that are so undeserving of their fame. I cant even decide which band sucks worse. But two negatives equall a positive right?

Bowie | 9/9/2006, 8:57 am EST

Well it is possible to both be an Axl Rose fan and a U2 fan. U2 are not sellouts and neither is Axl Rose. Just because someone here says U2 are sellouts, seems to call for the childish response that Axl Rose is a sellout.

Maybe you should hear some of Guns N’ Roses latest work. The reason the original Guns N’ Roses broke up was because the members were going in different directions musically.

But by all means please tell me how Axl Rose is a sellout, im sure your explanations will be very enlightening.

Matt | 9/9/2006, 5:06 am EST

Yes in this time of turmoil and uncertainty, only the bloated, surgicaly modifed (maybe still a heroin addict, maybe not) shell that is Axel Rose can save the world. I knew his fans were idiots but Jesus.

huh? what is happening | 9/9/2006, 1:17 am EST

Am I reading this right? Axl Rose ISN’T a sell out? Oh…Dear…God

dear god

dear god

dear god

dear god

(Laughs at the inferior beings)

did you really just say who cares about Africa. I hope you starve to death, you yuppie prick.

theworldsforgottenboy | 9/8/2006, 6:48 pm EST

Time for Bono to get himself actually elected to something other that the singer of a so over rock band. Maybe agree to take 5 million $$ of his wealth to live on for the rest of his life and give the other 300 Mil to Africa…. or just SHUT UP about Africa … who cares!!!

FckU | 9/8/2006, 6:04 pm EST

Green Day rocks… that’s not even debatable, so lets focus on the fact that they’re doing SOMETHING for the world. this is what art is supposed to do- help people (all kinds) in need

Aaron | 9/8/2006, 5:56 pm EST

I can honestly say that I was never a big U2 fan. While I once liked Green Day, they got real old, really fast. Wake Me Up When Their Career Ends (either of them).

KEN VAIL JR | 9/8/2006, 5:31 pm EST

U2 is not overrated….they have had an incredible effect on me. I was into them before they became a global phenomenon….people are so divided on U2. NOW….green day is a bit overrated-I think ‘AMERICAN IDIOT’ was some good stuff, but not that good. whatever-everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Matt | 9/8/2006, 4:54 pm EST

Yay…the two most over-rated bands together at last…

sabrina | 9/8/2006, 3:51 pm EST

bono! what are you thinking?! GREEN DAY SUCKS. no bono no.

dorkboy | 9/8/2006, 2:14 pm EST

Watch an old episode of The Monkees. Axl dances EXACTLY like Davey Jones. That cannot be cool.

Freidrich Charles | 9/8/2006, 2:06 pm EST

“i…. am…. having…… an…….. orgasm”

How decent of you to share this with us…any other degrading confessions hanging around in your head? No, its not that you used the word orgasm, its that you have such poor taste. Receiving sexual gratification from this kind of colaboration is like masterbating to a picture of Princess Diana’s corpse.

Freidrich Charles | 9/8/2006, 2:03 pm EST

Did they sell out? Have Green Day ever made an album so good that this is actually an issue.

The answer to this and more at 9, and now, three hookers being mauled by a pack of teenage girls trying to get tickets to Britney Spear’s come back tour! Oh, the answer is no. Green Day (for all their political postures) = irrelevant.

DT | 9/8/2006, 1:49 pm EST

The sell-out label is sooo 1999. It is sooo amazing that people still like to yell sell out about anyone who is successfull. Green day were always pop-punk, and Bono has always been a little cheesy and, fortunately, he has let his lighter side show through all of his savein the world schtick

manowar | 9/8/2006, 1:33 pm EST

RockGod is right, these 2 corporate rockers have sold their souls to the devil of selling out, they are two groups run by wannabee politicians… Axl is definatley rock n roll’s only hope, to save us from the r and b, emo, and political rock crap of todays era!

lukas | 9/8/2006, 1:26 pm EST

Lobsters | 9/8/2006, 1:02 pm EST

This is just going to be one of those silly things like when Mick Jagger made a record with Michael Jackson. Everybody gets all excited about it until they finally get to hear it and then . . . nobody wants to even talk about it.

Erik | 9/8/2006, 12:55 pm EST

To Rockgod: everybody sells out dumbass, at least if they want to make money.

BYRON 67 | 9/8/2006, 12:13 pm EST

i thought all of green days songs were covers anyway…bad move for bono&crew.oh yeah..someone should put axl out of his misery rockgod.

Scotty Checkbooks | 9/8/2006, 12:03 pm EST

I don’t know, dude… U2 just lost a whole lot of points in a lot of people’s book for this shennanigan… Why don’t they save face and just record a better known cover with WOLVES OF FLATBUSH?

KEN VAIL JR | 9/8/2006, 11:56 am EST

For those who don’t know…THE SKIDS had the bloke from BIG COUNTRY that killed himself, Stuart Adamson….their lp ‘THE CROSSING’ was produced by Steve Lillywhite, who also produced U2′S ‘WAR’ the same year…sounds cool, I suppose.

Love cup | 9/8/2006, 11:48 am EST
