Bob Dylan’s Best Chart Debut: “Modern Times” Tops Danity Kane in Shocker!

9/6/06, 2:58 pm EST

Bob Dylan

As our Bob Dylan Week draws to a close, we would like to formally congratulate Mr. Dylan for entering the charts at Number One with his new album Modern Times, which sold 191,933 copies in its first week – his best ever first week since the arrival of SoundScan, and first Number One since Desire, if memory serves. Adding to the thrill was the fact that Bob outsold #2 spot holders Danity Kane by 74,574 copies — a fleeting but noteworthy victory of eternal coolness over Diddy’s third manufactured pop girl group.

I can’t imagine it now…

“Good news, Mr. Dylan! ‘Modern Times’ outsold Danity Kane last week!”

“What’s a Danity Kane?”

I know where one of those 191,933 albums’s is. It hasn’t left my CD player since I bought it.

Modern Times should go up against Gnarles Barkey’s St. Elsewhere for the Album of the Year grammy come the new year. Both are excellent albums. Danity Kane is just disposable pop if you ask me.

I guess baby boomers still haven’t figured out how to download music yet.

very cool. but bob has pulled a george harrison and plagarized a song. a song on the new album, “beyond the horizon” is a DIRECT COPY of an old 1930’s song called “red sails in the sunset.” IDENTICAL right down to the key changes. how can he get away with this?

IF U LOOK INSIDE MANY OF DYLANS ALBUMS, OFTEN IT STATES “TRADITIONAL SONG ARRANGED BY bOB dYLAN”

One of the forgotten Dylan tracks is “Wedding Song” from Planet Waves. Now that is a forgotten Bob classick. Peace to the people!

My hubby and kids went to see Dylan in Atlanta – they all called me from the show to tell me how much he sucked. He was unintelligible on vocals, didn’t stand up once, much less play the guitar – they finally just turned off the piano mikes. My 16 year old – who thinks Dylan is a star – was so extremely disapapointed. What a waste!

This title of Number one is rightfully Dylan’s. I saw Dylan in concert two weeks ago in NY. I couldnt have asked for a better concert. To respond to a comment by nbb4740, your 16 year old as well as your entire family must know nothing about music. If someone goes to a Dylan concert and doesnt find it to be a high thrill of a life time then it’s quite obvious they need to learn about good music. Of course Dylan doesnt play guitar anymore, he’s pushin’ 70. He’s a legend. Legends dont have to play guitar. THEY ARE MUSIC LEGENDS! As for the comment about his voice, wow. That’s a first. I believe I have just seen the first time someone has poked fun at Dylan’s singing ability. After 44 years, 45 albums, and over 750 songs people should realize that Bob Dylan reigns King in the world of music.
The next headline we all will see is when “Modern Times” graces the world as Album of the Year. You’re my man Bob.

-BOB DYLAN’S ALBUMS ARE SO VARIED IN STYLE,LYRICALY,MUSICALY,V OCALY ,AND RIGHT DOWN TO THE SHEER TEXTURE OF BEING ABLE TO HEAR ALL INDIVGIDUAL BAND MEMBERS PLAY.SOME PEOPLE LIKE VAN MORRISON,JOHN PRINE,ELVIS COSTELLO DO ALSO,BUT THE MAGIC OF BOB IS LIKE A GHOST IV’E NEVER SEEN .BOB IS A FRIEND TO ALL,EVERYBODY HAS BAD AND GOOD DAYS FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE LISTENER.THERE WILL ALWAYS BE AT LEAST ONE SONG THAT WILL TOUCH YOU IN SOME WAY,AND I THINK THAT’S ALL THAT ANY ARTIST CAN ASK FOR.IF ANYONE DID AS MUCH AS BOB ON SUCH A CONSISTANT BASIS,MOST PEOPLE WOULD BURN OUT.SO TAKE BOB AS HE IS ,WHEN YOUR BEST FRIEND HAS A BAD DAY DO YOU REJECT HIM,OR HELP HIM;STAND BY BOB THROUGH GOOD AND (YOUR)BAD MOOD OF THE DAY,AND DON’T GET ON HIS CASE.AFTERALL HE’S ONLY PARTIALLY HUMAN,AND BESIDES;(nothing is that important;really!).

So called bands like Danity Kane shouldn’t be allowed. They’re just a bunch of young wowen shaking their asses. The music is awful – has no substance at all. Bob deserved to be #1.
