List of the Day: Best Makeout Songs

8/31/06, 2:04 pm EST

In our zeal to bring you up-to-the-minute coverage of the VMAs, we totally forgot about the most important event of the decade! Or maybe ever! That’d be Makeout NYC, a weird/awesome new MySpace-endorsed event taking place in the Sheep Meadow at Central Park this very evening. According to the Web site, “The makeout party is free, and for no particular cause, other than to promote shameless kissing in public.” Holy bejeezus, somebody pinch us. To get in the mood, we’ve been rocking our own personal playlist of makeout songs. So far, we’re stuck on Prince’s “Darling Nikki” (we just played it for the 374th time). You guys got any ideas? Oh, and wanna smooch?

OK, whats wrong with this list is that if its good as it should be, you need more than 1 song, so unless you happen to have that perfect makeout/bonin mix-disc handy, shouldn’t this list be for makeout albums not songs? Here it goes…

Chuck | 8/31/2006, 7:34 pm EST

Bjork – “Cocoon” First time I heard that I was like “Woah..” I had to cool down for a bit. Also, “An Echo, A Stain.” Wow… Her Medulla album has a few too..

Postal Service – “Clark Gable” Good beat and easy vocals make it a favorite. Keep the rhythm eh?

Sigur Ros – “Svefn g englar” So mellow and out-of-body sounding it’s perfect. Even if the lyrics are about being born. They have a lot of good ones.

Incubus – “Aqueous Transmission” It’s long, and Japanese-ish. I picture making out in a boat wearing (for a short time) kimonos.

Silverchair – “My Favourite Thing” I know most people reading this when they hear the name “Silverchair” they think of the early grunge…although very good, if you can completely forget that image and listen to their recent albums, you will be doing yourself a favor.

Let us not forget Boyz II Men “I’ll Make Love to You”

Those sound good to me…

Chuck | 8/31/2006, 7:34 pm EST

S-P | 8/31/2006, 7:49 pm EST

Can’t believe no one here has mentioned the king of funk, Sly Stone. This man has made some of the best makeout/sex jams in the history of music. A few worth mentioning:

1)”Thank You For Talking To Me Africa” (There’s A Riot Goin’ On): A remix, basically, of his earlier hit “Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again”, the grand finale to Sly’s best album is a deathly slow, funky-as-hell crawl towards ecstacy with one of the best baselines ever, and at seven and a half minutes its really all the average high school lover man needs.

2)”If You Want Me To Stay” (Fresh): Another classic baseline, Sly does his best Barry White impersonation and produces his last classic, and a great makeout song as well. The Red Hot Chili Peppers covered it on their second album to great effect, and while it sticks pretty close to the original, Flea rocks that baseline like his life depends on it. Good sensual stuff.

3)”Family Affair” (There’s A Riot Goin’ On): Even more bleak than “Thank You For Talking To Me Africa”, especially in the lyrics, yet in the end the funk takes over, and for four blissful minutes we can relish in the darkly ominous synthesizers and the playful yet tired interplay between Sly and sister Rosie Stone in the chorus.

4)”Sex Machine” (Stand!): At nearly FOURTEEN minutes, this instrumental jam pulls out all the stops – wah-wah guitar, talk box, slap bass, crawling synths, shuffling drums – that make a classic sex jam. A defining progression in the Family Stone’s musical interplay, it’s an under-appreciated gem that usually gets lost in the political and unifying anthems of the rest of the album, yet it’s definately Sly at his freakiest.

5)”Hot Fun In The Summertime” (Greatest Hits): Lazy, slow, laid-back, breezy…just a few adjectives that come to mind when listening to Sly Stone’s most mellow hit. Yet the mood is set; all about being with your lover in the hot summer sun, and the music reflects this atmosphere perfectly.

So there ya go, some very key tracks worth checking out. Personally, I say that the entirety of “There’s A Riot Goin’ On” is the best makout soundtrack ever made; it’s all slow dark funk, perfect for a romantic evening.

P.S. All of the songs I mentioned above (except for “Sex Machine”, unfortunately) can be found on The Essential Sly & The Family Stone, which has way more stuff than what I listed here.

“Isn’t it a Pity” , by George Harrison. So sad, you need someone to squeez on to.

“Hurdy Gurdy Man” by Donovan. Get high with nothing but the tune. Oohh baby…

Tokyo Matt | 8/31/2006, 8:37 pm EST

Kate Bush -Running Up That Hill
Prince -Cream

Ok, both of those are about what comes AFTER the kissing, but it’s nice to start planting ideas before time.

Least appropriate song? Hammer-Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse. Many thanks to my iPods shuffle for ruining that date.

Andrew | 8/31/2006, 8:48 pm EST

Could You Be Loved-Bob Marley

I Believe In A Thing Called Love-The Darkness
Slide-Goo Goo Dolls
Molly’s Chambers-Kings Of Leon(only if the girls name is molly of course)

Silly Love Songs-Paul McCartney
Please Please Me-The Beatles
Such Great Heights-The Postal Service
Start Me Up-The Rolling Stones
Girl Inform Me-The Shines
My Girl-The Temptations
You Set The Fire In Me-Tom Vek

I would have to say that the recipe for the perfect makeout success song are as follows:
-steady tempo(nothing to fast and nothing to slow, you don’t want to fall asleep or bang your head when your kissing)
-gender perspective(both people have the song apply to them)
-pronouns work(i,you,me,etc.)

Oh baby, THE three best songs to put you and your lover in the mood for some lip action (and maybe a little more):

“Harvest Moon” by Neil Young. It’s a sweet tune, but the lyrics alone would have been just as moving.

“Slow Dancing” by U2 with Willie Nelson. Yeah, it’s the Red-Headed Stranger and he ain’t known for his sexiness. But this song is gorgeous with Bono and Edge doing background vocals.

“I See A Darkness” by Bonnie Prince Billy. Complex, moving, a stew of emotions that makes me smolder.

gitaninva | 9/1/2006, 11:33 am EST

Hm, I would have to give several for this..

1 – Une Dernier Fois Encore – Garou — This is a French Canadian artist whose songs just ooze sex. I could actually choose several from him to fit this bill.
2 – Everything – Lifehouse
3 – Secret – Maroon 5
4 – What would happen – Meredith Brooks
5 – Have you ever needed someone so bad – Def Leppard
5 -

Bubba ORLY? | 9/1/2006, 11:44 am EST

I knew this stripper who danced to Man in the Box. Hearing that song and having a woman’s crotch in your face at the same time means wanting to bow chicka bow wow every time I hear it. So, yeah. That one.

1 – HIM – So Close To The Flame
2 – Foo Fighters – Times Like These (acoustic)

Marvin Gaye’s Lets Get It On & Sexual Healing

Erik E Erik | 9/1/2006, 3:37 pm EST

This song is pretty out-of-character from the rest of the stellar album, but what about “I Love You” from Vanilla Ice? It’s way romantic, and everytime I play it when I am with a girl, when it gets to the part that says he’ll give her everything, “yes, girl, even diamond rings!” I say to the girl, “I’ll do that, too”, in a low, sexy voice just the one that the Iceman uses. It nearly always works.

One side of my brain sings “Let’s Spend the Night Together”- Rolling Stone (this part regulates my voice sometimes too)
Meanwhile, the other side sings a very specify part of “closer” (NINE INCH NAILS).

The most important is that the rest of my body received the two songs as a same instruction…and obeys!!!!

Alright lads, I’ve been saving up my sexy playlist for this very moment:
Now for those of you who dont get off to the cornyness of ‘lets get it on’ and barry white, then i’ve got the list for you, subtle, but sexy.
If youre feeling in the mood for some red satin sheets and candles i recommend So real – Jeff Buckley, Wicked Game – Chris Isaak, and Everybody here wants you – Jeff Buckley.
If youre more in the mood for some hot crazy rocker sex, then try out Animals – Nickelback, Closer – NIN (The best!), and She wants to move – NERD.
Lastly, if its all-out frilly knickers and a videocamera porno style youre after, then by all means give these a shot: I need you tonight – INXS, Pets – Porno for Pyros, and Stadium – Skunkhour.
Good luck and happy times to all.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned All Mine by Portishead or Crazy on You by Heart… those are two of the hottest songs I know.

Also good for tasty makeouts:
Ambulance LTD – The Ocean
Bush – The Chemicals Between Us
Esthero – Superheroes
Hawsley Workman – Smoke Baby
Heart – Magic Man
Kill Hannah – Lips Like Morphine
Massive Attack – Teardrop
Portishead – Glory Box
Portishead – Only You
Portishead – Roads
Smashing Pumpkins – Mayonaise
Smashing Pumpkins – Today
Sneaker Pimps – 6 Underground
Snow Patrol – Somewhere a Clock is Ticking
The Who – Love Reign O’er Me
Zero 7 – Destiny

One of many lists I’ve compiled.
Well, two. The other is lighter, for sleepy afternoon makeouts.

ratedmformature | 3/3/2008, 4:39 pm EST

Okay, so me and my girlfriend are working on a mix for our next makeout session (that may lead to a little more than that, but not “all the way”)

So far, this is what we’ve got

Candy Shop ft. Olivia
Just A Lil Bit
Party Ain’t Over ft. Young Buck

Chris Brown – Take You Down

Peepin’ Me – Chamillionaire

Dave Matthews [Band]:
Crush
Crash Into Me
Dreamgirl
When The World Ends

Party Life – Jay-Z
Anything – Jay-Z ft. Usher and Pharrell

Come A Little Closer – Dierks Bentley

Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off – Panic At The Disco

Let’s Get It On – Marvin Gaye
