Elton John was talking to us about his upcoming album, The Captain and the Kid, due out next month, when he dropped a bomb about his plans for the project after that: he intends to record a hip-hop album with Dr. Dre. Sir Elton has yet to personally discuss this project with Dre but he’s dead serious about the prospect. “I want to bring my songs and melodies to hip-hop beats — a bit like no ‘No Diggity’ by Blackstreet,” said the Rocket Man, who’s also a huge fan of Tupac’s 1995 hit “California Love,” “I love these beats, but I have no idea how to get them.”
“I want to work with Pharrell, Timbaland, Snoop, Kanye, Eminem and just see what happens. It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don’t know until you try.” Doubters are referred to Elton’s 2001 Grammy performance of “Stan” with Eminem, which really wasn’t so shabby. For more about all this (including reaction from Bernie Taupin!) and more info about The Captain and the Kid, check out the September 7th issue of Rolling Stone.

Elton John and Outkast actually could create something great. Keep in mind, Elton is a music writer, not a lyricist or a rhyme guy. Combining his talent for melody with Outkast’s talent for rhythm and beats, something good could arise.

Yeah, but when was the last time Elton John wrote anything but a sappy love song?
1983?

elton john- great musician but past it. hes just jumping on hiphop bandwagon. this aint to great an idea as hiphop will be dieing out soon- ppl. r getting sick of it

i wanna see elton do an industrial album with trent reznor- thatd b interesting. maybe an alternative album ie faith no more, jane’s addiction. even better elton teams up with morisey. how bout elton does pop idol?
Rich | 8/25/2006, 8:51 pm EST
His work in the early and mid 70’s is legendary, but Hip-hop? Last I heard, he was going to start making music for music’s sake and to hell with the corporate wrecking ball.
Little Jazz might be interesting. I always thought that “Idol” off of Blue Moves was really cool. I’d be a blast to hear his jazz interpretations in the wee small hours of Saturday & Sunday on “Jazz After Hours” with Jim Wilke. I think that is a genre that he could have some lasting impact on.
Whatever | 8/26/2006, 2:08 am EST
At one time, Elton and Bernie Taupin wrote some great songs. Madam Elton hasn’t done anything worth a damn in a long, long time. In my opinion his stuff nowadays SUCKS! His energy is best spent complaing and whining which is probably best as to keep the focus off his “music”. By the way, his Candle in the Wind tribute to Princess Diana wouldn’t have become the biggest selling single of all time if it wasn’t for the timing and the event it was released for. I’m guessing this is one reason his ego is bigger than the space between his ears.
Hunter | 8/26/2006, 2:24 am EST
I just started getting into Elton. I saw him in Vegas last year. WOW! He is truly an amazing musician. Tumbleweed Connection is jaw dropping good stuff. Rap? Hip Hop? Elton, what the hell are you thinking? Some rap beats are pretty cool. Go sample the drum track for “When The Levee Breaks” and then you’ll have some of that sound “you don’t understand how to get”. Hey, you could even manipulate the sound and tempo with a computer if you get bored.
Of course though, it took a young white boy like Em to bring Hip-Hop to the status of something slightly more bearable than it was before, just imagine where a middle aged white rock queen will take it. Once you go rap you may never come back.

he and madonna should both disappear.

I will refer you to Elton’s performance with Eminem at 2001 Grammys, which was a MASSIVE success his melodies, with the production of Dr Dre and the hip-hop styles of Eminem and Kanye West would be very innovative. Tupac’s sampling of Indian Sunset on Ghetto Gospel was a SMASH HIT, and Kanye has proved that sampling such idols as Shirley Bassey on Diamonds in Sierra Leone really works. Diversity in music is what this world needs.
Dwayne W. | 8/26/2006, 10:35 am EST
LOL!!!!
Sean Washington | 8/26/2006, 10:49 am EST
I think this great. Diversity is what music needs. Elton and Eminem were amazing together. Elton is not just trying to jump on the bandwagon. Because he likes the old school anyway. He listed people ad Dr. Dre who is older. Elton is just a musician who loves music. He wants to do all that he can while he is still creative.
Steve | 8/26/2006, 11:03 am EST
I just can’t envision it. I’ve always felt that Elton’s best album was his very first, before he became the Queen of Pop. But being a musician, I understand the desire to experiment. More power to her.
coloradoskibum | 8/26/2006, 11:42 am EST
As the queen of England, I believe Elton can do whatever he wants, and it will turn to gold–he’s one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, so whatever he tries next will definitely be interesting to hear.

Nate | 8/26/2006, 1:24 pm EST
It’s certainly an interesting prosepect…he’s been purveying black music for a long time, so to me it’s no surprise. Mary J Blige’s “Deep Inside” which interpolated “Bennie and the Jets” is what I’m thinking of at the moment.
Rich N. | 8/26/2006, 2:33 pm EST
You’ve got to be kidding?? I have been a fan for 35 years, and seen the various attempts at branching into different forms of music, some successful, some not. I would love to hear a more blues, jazz or gospel influenced album, or perhaps an album of just his voice and piano, but this…?? I also think an album of voice, Spanish guitar and piano would be cool. Elton, do you remember 1979’s “Victim of Love”? Yukk! I’ve seen him 11 times in concert, and was never disappointed. Time will tell, but dear lord what is he thinking? I’ve really liked his recent stuff (no, he’ll never be at his 70’s peak again, but who is?) but we’ll have to wait and see.
Nate | 8/26/2006, 3:32 pm EST
Oh, everyone let him fall flat on his face if he wants to. He’s Elton John…in the spare time between bitchfests and twatting on about music being crap, he can make some of his own…crap that is.

They serve us their circus freak shows like this one and now we should comment this…okay, comment follows: i think that person with a slightest bit of common sense should know that this isn’t about idiot elton or dumbass dre neither whitetrash eminem…it’s all just showbizz.

in regards to “hip hop dying out soon”, how many years has it been since people said hip hop was just a fad? damn near 30? yup it was dying out soon back then too… hip hop aint going nowhere. if Elton wants to make a hip hop album let him, it’ll be interesting to hear how it comes out.
psmike | 8/27/2006, 4:28 pm EST
this isn’t the death knell..that happened long ago. This format has nothing new to say, and not even new ways to say it..it’s simply posing (not unlike some of the actual posing that goes with it..quick: bite your lower lip, snarl “why you wanna disrepect me man” and cock your arm. No wonder Elton thinks he can do this crap.
Postman | 8/27/2006, 6:03 pm EST
I’m really looking forward to this album. I really hope he includes the gangstah remix of Can You Feel the Love Tonight and starts wearing huge gold chains around his neck instead of huge glasses. But who knows, maybe the album will turn out to be great?

Hip Hop is not a fad. It’s a legit music form like every other form of music that ever came to existence.
Having said that, I wish not to see some 65 year old pop queen, pollute the hip hop world.
I’m not a huge fan of hip hop, but I can see exploitation by a mile away.
Rock tried to ride the coat tales of hip hop, so did madonna and a few other artists.
It’s never worked in the past. I don’t care if Elton John played som hook at the grammys with Eminem. It’s going to be embarrising for all of us.
Killa | 8/28/2006, 12:53 pm EST
i’ve heard that Elton’s got the flow. I guess he’s on that new Joe Budden mixtape.

DavefromCanada | 8/28/2006, 4:36 pm EST
Most of his late 30’s to 50 year old fan base has never listened to a hip hop record, so I’m not surprised at the reaction. Elton can try anything he likes. I’m sure that hangin’ with the 20s-something’s Dr Dre’s of the world may energize him. If mod Rod can croon the standards, why can’t Elton try his hand at hip hop? Could be total crap (Victim of Love) or interesting (Thom Bell Sessions). This could also be an attemt to get some media buzz surrounding the upcoming Captain and the Kid ablum next month.
rws777 | 8/28/2006, 6:37 pm EST
Elton is pure genius and his talent is matched by very few. He wants to do a hip hop record, so be it. If you don’t want to buy it then don’t. You don’t sell 200 million records by staying in a box.
Observer | 8/29/2006, 8:20 am EST
I read a lot of the comments here and noticed that none of them even mentions the line-up of talent that Elton John wants to work with. He is one of the greats of our time and he is selecting the greatest to work with. Let’s face it, these guys are on a list of pure genius themselves. I hope he adds Missy Elliot to the list. These people know what to do with his music and as long as he lets them do what they are good at, he will have some pretty big hits on the project. Just sit back Elton and enjoy what these producers can do. They are the best in the business right now and for some years to come.
my opinion | 8/29/2006, 10:57 am EST
Elton John is a Dumba$$!! Him and Britney ought to get together.
J.S | 8/29/2006, 11:07 am EST
Elton John is extremely talented, and I think that it’s great that he is going to have an influence on hip-hop. Especially with working with mainstream like Pharell and Kanye West. He is going to come and bring out great music which is the most important thing of all. Nothing sounds as great as a dope hip-hop beat with a beautiful melody on a piano which will be done none other than Dr. Dre Vs. Elton John. Can’t wait!
my opinion | 8/29/2006, 11:13 am EST
Just for Elton John to ATTEMPT to do hip-hop is an INSULT to hip-hop. Elton, please go get some tea and crumpets and quit embarrassing yourself and quit insulting hip-hop artists everywhere.
green hornet | 8/29/2006, 4:37 pm EST
this is nothing new, or even newsworthy. Tons of older artists have come forward and said they’d like to work with more contemporary (read: popular) artists. Michael Jackson said he wanted to record with eminem. It’s just another way to stay in the papers .
Hecker | 8/29/2006, 7:22 pm EST
Elton John is one of the top musicians of all time, in my opinion. Him expanding his career could be a beautiful thing. I mean, for instance, a rough example of this is grey mouse’s grey album with Jay-z and The Beatles. That worked out.

Uly | 8/30/2006, 8:38 am EST
I wish people would stick to what they’re good at and leave hip hop alone. Elton isn’t a hip hop artist. So what’s he doing. Dr Dre seems to be selling out hip hop for the bidders at the highest price. This is why nowadays I’m ashamed to admit I listen to hip hop.
ottis from england | 8/30/2006, 4:14 pm EST
there seems to be alot of foolishness happening
in the world of rap music nowadays.
i mean some folks consider Pharrell, Kanye,
Eminem to be “greats” in the world of hip hop
good for them. i’m just glad mans 9th wonder the

i’m not sure how all those homophobic lyric

true colors shining through and all that.
will it be good for rap music.
yes if you are a middle america white teen who

You need to ask yourself, what is hip-hop? what does it mean? What is the culture? If you can answer those questions, then you will see that hip-hop is a black music, with street culture, and street principles. The fact that Elton “the anti-man” John is doing this, means that the rap industry have no interest in the true essence of hip-hop, and what it stands for. All they want to do is make the most amount of money, by exploiting the genre, and the fact that a batty man like Elton is gonna be at the forefront, will only strengthen their efforts, cause we all know that gay people have more power than the priminister, don’t we!? (BATTY BOYZ!) Shoutouts to the wu-Tang Clan, and Wu-Elements, my boyz Uly, Ottis, Davross, Hak, Johnny etc…Peace!
SHO | 9/2/2006, 4:09 pm EST
As Elton said maybe it could be great maybe it could be a flop.
But it’s important for Hip Hop to try new directions ‘cuz Rap became boring with the only rule of street credibility.
Elton and Lil John could be a weird but interesting stuff

Fox | 9/6/2006, 9:09 pm EST
Like some guy said, Elton;s stuff in the early 70’s was unbelievable. He is undeniably one of the greatest musicians in history. Look, music is meant to be mixed together. Whether any hip hop artist wants to admit it or not, all music stemmed from classical, from rock to country to hip-hop, which in my opinion died after Run DMC. Listen to gnarles barkley’s big new hit Crazy. It’s Bethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Who knows, maybe this could get elton out of his musical rut.
the real captain | 9/18/2006, 12:17 am EST
i don’t know…I guess Elton is just kinda reaching for stars and is coming up with shit. The truth is Elton couldn’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag when it comes to his recent song writing and now he want’s to do hip hop. The only somewhat decent thing i’ve heard that includes elton in it is ghetto gospel by Tupac but that was his old shit…his new shit just plain out stinks.

Great music is about pushing boundaries and trying new things. It is funny to hear all of you rip shit apart before you even hear it. Maybe it will be great and maybe it won’t, but at least he is willing to take that chance. Maybe this is what was said before Aerosmith and Run DMC collaborated.

Elton should change corse to gospel time has run out for him in this world.let him accept Jesus as his personal saviour so he can devort his efforts to serving GOD.I think whatever in here are thinking is in terms of fame which is short lived .I pray that GOD appears to him one day so the world may learn the truth.

Hi all
CJ | 11/15/2006, 6:13 pm EST
I would like to comment on the interview with Elton John. First I would like to say it is funny how some people will say Christians are judging them and they are judging Christians. OK to the point, Elton John said in the interview. Nov 11 2006
(”I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people,” John said in the Observer newspaper’s Music Monthly Magazine. “Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays.”
“But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion,” he said. “From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn’t seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it’s not really compassionate.”
John also criticized religious leaders for failing to do anything about conflicts around the world.
“Why aren’t they having a conclave? Why aren’t they coming together?”
John said those in his own field have been similarly lax.
“It’s like the peace movement in the ’60s. Musicians got through to people by getting out there and doing peace concerts, but we don’t seem to do them any more,” he said. “If John Lennon were alive today, he’d be leading it with a vengeance.”)
So why does this bother me so you ask? It is because I’m a Christian and I have always been taught not to judge. But I cannot be silent anymore. It looks like this lemming will not buy anymore Elton John albums. It is sad because I used to like Elton John and his music.

I hope some day he’ll come to believe in Jesus and get his life right, and also that I get mine right. I don’t think any person has the right to pick on a person because their different. HIP HOP HAS GROWN BIGGER WORLD WIDE . WE AS PRODUCER AT ONE TIME SAMPLED OUT SIDE OF HIPHOP IT WAS LOOKED AT AS A FAD . I really hate the idea of Elton doing a hip-hop album. I hate hip-hop and rap so much, but I admit the possibility of a hip-hop song NOT sucking because a REAL musician will be involved. I would LOVE to hear him do an instrumental album! Funeral For a Friend, Carla-Etude, Tonight are such amazing pieces, and his voice isn’t what it used to be. Taupin has gotten a bit rusty as well.

Athough I detest hip-hop, I don’t see why you can’t understand that he’s just being creative. If he wants to try and make a *barf* hip-hop record, let him. People like to experiment with new things; I really hope he won’t though. Althoug it might be better for his input.
LevonTheLight | 12/27/2007, 6:32 am EST
His music and current tastes are so pathetic he should consider recording under a new alias. It is so sad when great artists don’t know when to stop trying to recapture the magic. Even Clapton has failed a bit at reinvention. Elton doing Rap (or Hip-Hop) would be like Marilyn Manson trying to do country.

Most of you people are so hateful and closed minded. If you consider yourselves an “Elton fans” you would respect any decision Elton makes! Because I know you’ll still buy the album when it comes out haha
I laugh at all of you loser
“I hate hip-hop so much” boo-hoo then don’t listen to it nobody is forcing you too.
Hip-hop fans who cares if they use Elton on the album or who cares if he’s gay lol Kanye and the rest of them might have stolen beats or excerpts for his songs. Like currently 50 cent and others are trying to win the rights to sample Beatles songs, but they are not so don’t worry rockers lol.

How degrading for Elton. A truth almost universally accepted: blacks have no interst in even great music made by white people. Has he not noticed that his audience is almost 99% white? (even in Oakland where I saw in 1984?)
