Farewell, Pluto! In Tribute: Best Songs About Space

8/24/06, 4:12 pm EST

thom yorke
After much back and forth between expert astronomers, today it was announced that Pluto is no longer considered a planet. It’s been downgraded to a mere dwarf planet, which is totally not the same, and completely throws off that mnemonic device for remembering the planets, “My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.” In an effort to help assuage the deep sense of loss we are all feeling, we thought it an appropriate time to do a list of our favorite space-related songs:

  • “Hey Mr. Spaceman,” the Byrds
  • “Life on Mars,” David Bowie
  • “Another Girl, Another Planet,” the Only Ones
  • “Ladies and Gentleman, We are Floating in Space,” Spiritualized
  • “2000 Light Years From Home,” the Rolling Stones
  • “Astro,” the White Stripes
  • “Planet of Sound,” the Pixies
  • “Sex Dwarf,” Soft Cell
  • “Planet Telex,” Radiohead

What’ve you got?

First of all, Astro is not a space song. Jack White himself describes the Astro as something you do that you don’t want anyone else to know about.

Secondly, the fact that Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd isn’t on here is a mutha fu**in travesty.

Two other suggestion: Across the Universe by the Beatles
Strange News from Another Star by Blur

“Across the Universe” – The Beatles(my personal favorite Beatles tune)

Dave | 8/26/2006, 1:12 am EST

Just an observation on this space…I wonder what the percentage of these spaced out tunes is actually from the 21st century…the century that was looked upon as being futuristic and spacey…. It’s true! Imagination has left popular music! I wonder what they’re listening to on Saturn?

Brandon | 8/26/2006, 4:41 pm EST

“Space Oddity” is the obvious choice of course. For me, a number of Frank Black tunes from Teenager of the Year would qualify as the best, and that album is probably the best sci-fi album ever.

(People, note! The David Bowie song is called “Space Oddity,” NOT “Space Odyssey”!!!)

Coheed and Cambria…come on kids…intergalactic civil war in a poprock package.

Anonymous | 9/17/2006, 1:04 pm EST

“Astro” isn’t really about space, so I don’t see how it counts (though it is a good song). “Planet Telex”? Not even the best RADIOHEAD tune about space. Coheed and Cambria deserve to be on this list, as do Muse. And I would have thought “Space Oddity” of “Ziggy Stardust” would have represented David Bowie here. There’s plenty of great space songs (”The Final Countdown” not being one of them).

“My House on Mars” – Ayreon
“One Small Step” – Ayreon
“Into the Black Hole” – Ayreon Feat. Bruce Dickinson (greatest song about space. period.)

3 honourable mentions:

“Knights of Cydonia” – Muse
“Astronomy Domine” – Pink Floyd
“Space Oddity” – David Bowie

HAHA!
I know I am SUPER late, but I just needed to say that just because a song has the word star in it, it doesn’t mean it is about space!
And I am not sure if this is the first version of the song but I like this one, it is a song where Major Tom returns home. It’s called… Major Tom(coming home) it is by ccanasta- I think…

oldpink | 12/30/2008, 6:25 pm EST

Honestly, how did Pink Floyd NOT make this list? I think this “list” needs some reconsidering.

Consider these, perhaps?
“Cygnus X-1″ by Rush
“A Saucerful of Secrets” by Pink Floyd

Would “Come Sail Away” and “Symptom of the Universe” be considered space songs?
