Weekend List: Best Rock Duets

8/18/06, 6:51 pm EST

Tom Petty and Stevie NicksIn an effort to steer ourselves away from mental images of Michael Bolton and Cheech Marin dueting, we decided to whip up a little Best Rock Duets list for the weekend. Some personal faves:

  • Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” (which they performed at Madison Square Garden not long ago)
  • Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, “You’re All I Need to Get By”
  • The Roots and Erykah Badu, “You Got Me”
  • Jim Reid and Hope Sandoval, “Sometimes Always”

What are your picks?

OK, its morbid, but Unforgettable by Natalie Cole and posthumously her father Nat King Cole. Truly Unforgettable.

Anything on Emmy Lou Harris’ Duets album, but especially Wild Montana Skies with John Denver (if you think Denver was merely bubblegum pop, you’ll change your mind when you hear this song).

Jackson by Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix or their progenitors, June Carter and Johnny Cash.

And don’t forget forget Sonny & Cher, I Got You Babe. Nothing like a slinky Bob Mackie gown on a long legged woman singing to a pre-PC geek.

Monsieur Lodus had it right. Many of the best duets are within groups. Beatles — Two of Us; We Can Work It Out. Any number of Band songs — The Weight, Acadian Driftwood, King Harvest, etc.

Sam & Dave!!!!!!!!!!!

Other favorites of mine — Marvin and Tammi! Besides You’re All I Need to Get By, they had Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough … Your Precious Love — that’s just the start.
Emmylou is a terrific duet partner. All the stuff with Gram Parsons — I particularly like Hickory Wind and Love Hurts. Sail Away with Neil Young. Also, Neil had several great duets with Nicolette Larson on Comes a Time.

Otis Redding and Carla Thomas — Tramp.

Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville — When Something is Wrong With My Baby, and the other duets from “Cry Like a Rainstorm.”

Dylan & Johnny Cash — Girl From the North COuntry on Nashville Skyline.

Best duet?

Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds doing “Careless Whisper” in Seattle ,Summer ‘05. The icing on the cake was when Rufus went to walk offstage, he paused, turned and dramatically threw a kiss to Ben at the far end of the stage. What a class act!

Ed | 8/25/2006, 9:46 am EST

“Love Hurts” Gram Parson and Emmylou Harris; or any duet with Emmylou.

jeff | 8/21/2006, 12:01 pm EST

Huh?

GC | 8/21/2006, 12:04 am EST

as much as i do love tom petty, i can’t stand stevie nicks. my pick for the best duet is ” under pressure” by queen and david bowie. the song is sad but true. ” why can’t we give love one more chance…? ’cause love’s such an old fashioned lie and love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the light and love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves, this is our last dance….”

johnnygunit | 8/20/2006, 7:18 pm EST

And Liz is sopt on with Can’t Stand Me Now, if I may say…

johnnygunit | 8/20/2006, 7:17 pm EST

A recent one is “Land Locked Blues” - Bright Eyes with Emmylou Harris.

abraham | 8/20/2006, 5:18 pm EST

regina specktor and juian casablancas/the strokes - post modern girls and old fashioned men

Liz | 8/20/2006, 3:24 pm EST

If duets between members of the same band count…
“Can’t Stand Me Now”-The Libertines

sedArash | 8/20/2006, 10:39 am EST

Hey ! please someone tell me how to write my own blog!!!?

Joey | 8/20/2006, 7:20 am EST

Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush “Don’t Give Up”
Tom Waits & Keith Richards “That Feel”
Nick Cave & PJ Harvey “Henry Lee”
Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer “Redemption Song”

Matt | 8/20/2006, 3:20 am EST

The live duet on Crazy Love by Van Morrison and Ray Charles. Pure soul.

And Spoon…duets are not backing vocals.

I’d also like to nominate Paula Abdul and the cat.

Sonny Clips | 8/20/2006, 2:12 am EST

What about the Duet between Busta Rhymes and Erykah Badu, bot “One” and “Turn it Up” One uses the Boyfriend cut by the Tom Tom Club. “what do you consider fun…” Great duet, really harks back to Ella and Louis

A.J. | 8/20/2006, 12:51 am EST

first off Elton John plays piano and sings backing vocals on the studio “Whatever Gets You Through the Night”

next a duet is usually considered as a piece of music with two performers. i’m not denying that “Under Pressure” or “Walk This Way” are great songs, just that they are collaborations not duets. I could be wrong, if we are going to consider it that way both of those songs would absolutely belong on the list.

another song that might be considered is “Gimme Shelter,” although Mary Clayton is a little known guest vocalist, her vocals work perfectly with Jagger’s

“Spoon” Dave Matthews and Alanis Morrisette off “Before These Crowded Streets”

monsieur lodus | 8/19/2006, 8:16 pm EST

Let me get this straight, “Stevie Nicks and…” comprises the best rock duet. You mean to say that the Krusty the Klown of rock and Tom Petty (to whom I’m fairly indifferent) are the best rock duet?

Uhh, why not one of the many Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Waits/Richard, Dylan/the Band moments?

Does being in a same band not make it a duet? and if so, Stevie Nicks, come on! ewww…..

jeff | 8/19/2006, 5:45 pm EST

Liz Fraser and Massive Attack “Teardrop”
PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke “This Mess We’re In”

Agnus | 8/19/2006, 4:40 pm EST

Fairytale of New York

S-P | 8/19/2006, 3:51 am EST

ANYTHING by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell should be in that list my friends. Best pairing of voices in soul ever. But I do have a few other suggestions:

Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, “The Girl Is Mine”

Anything with The Band from The Last Waltz

Sublime and Gwen Stefani, “Saw Red”

Run-DMC and Aerosmith, “Walk This Way” (I know the guy down there said no rap cuz it’s almost all collaborations these days, and while I strongly agree, this is just classic; same with “You Got Me” from the original list)

Absolutely “Under Pressure” is considered a duet, are you KIDDING me A.J.? And I think Elton John only sang “Whatever Gets You Through The Night” with John Lennon live on one occasion, though I could be mistaken.

Carrie M | 8/19/2006, 2:41 am EST

Under Pressure-David Bowie and Queen

Quiet Storm Guy | 8/19/2006, 1:09 am EST

How about “Endless Love” by Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross? Also “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” by Peabro Bryson and Roberta Flack. And speaking of Roberta Flack, what about “The Closer I GetTo You” with Donny Hathaway? Ok so none of these are actually rock but they are good songs nonetheless.

PinkPick | 8/18/2006, 10:31 pm EST

Led Zeppelin and Sandy Denny, “The Battle of Evermore” It’s a very good and different Led Zeppelin song.

D | 8/18/2006, 8:58 pm EST

Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks is right, but they had a better duet on “Insider” off TP&theHBs Hard Promises album. A much under-appreciated Petty gem.

Another nod would have to go to Ryan Adams with Emmy Lou Harris on “Oh My Sweet Carolina” off Adams’ Heartbreaker.

A.J. | 8/18/2006, 8:44 pm EST

one more

“Take Off Your Cool” Norah Jones and Andre 3000

A.J. | 8/18/2006, 8:43 pm EST

“Whatever Gets You Through the Night” Elton John and John Lennon

“You’re So Vain” Carly Simon and Mick Jagger

“Paradise By the Dashboard Light” Meatloaf and Ellen Foley

and as much as I love “Under Pressure” can it be considered a duet?

Matthew | 8/18/2006, 8:14 pm EST

Can rap be excluded, since every song is Lil’ somebody, Feat. MC Somebody, with special guest…..????

Donald | 8/18/2006, 7:11 pm EST

Queen & David Bowie “Under Pressure”
