Rolling Stone’s Dark Side of the Moonman Awards, Part 2 of 5

8/18/06, 4:15 pm EST

jack whiteOkay guys, to recap: We are hosting our own first annual “Dark Side of the Moonman Awards.” We’ll be announcing two categories a day for the next four days, and we need your nominations. Then we’ll hold a big vote starting at the end of next week. Yesterday we started things off with our first two categories. Lot’s of good suggestions there, keep posting them! Today we introduce two new categories.

3. Cheesiest Attempt to Appear “Sensitive”
(Staff suggestion: James Blunt “You’re Beautiful”)

4. Best Video the MTV VMAs Snubbed
(Staff suggestion: Raconteurs, “Steady as She Goes”)

A reminder: Nominations must have been released after August 1, 2005, but need not be “official” videos – stuff that never got released but can be found on YouTube, or something that only appears on the band’s site is all fair game. Do It!

3. Any Chris Brown video
4. King of The Rodeo, Kings of Leon

Dennis O'Bell | 8/18/2006, 5:48 pm EST

Best Snubbed: Weezer, “Perfect Situation.”

Brad | 8/18/2006, 5:57 pm EST

Speaking of Jack White…I can’t believe “The Denial Twist” was snubbed as well as “Heard Em Say” by Kanye West

both are great imaginative videos courtesy of Michel Gondry that you just don’t get to see anymore

alfredo | 8/18/2006, 6:07 pm EST

Best Video Snubbed:
Eleanor Put Your Boots Back On – Franz Ferdinand

Love4Flea | 8/18/2006, 6:11 pm EST

Best Snubbed: PearlJam “Life Wasted”
that vid is so awsome.

Randy Kuszmaul | 8/18/2006, 6:18 pm EST

3.”Stick Wit Choo” or however the damn it’s spelled – Pussycat Dolls (Yeah, you’ll stick with him through thick and thin, I’m sure. Mostly thick though, ’cause every one of those chicks’ more stretched out than a Livestrong bracelet on Star Jones).

4. The Ghost of You – My Chemical Romance (Three cheers for the return of the epic video! Gorgeous cinematograophy, brilliant editing, and better than average performances from the band).

johnnygunit | 8/18/2006, 6:32 pm EST

I got somethin’ Blunt for ya Rolling Stone.

RS Blows | 8/18/2006, 6:54 pm EST

Amazing how hypocritical this article is in declaring the Raconteurs were a “snubbed,” when you haven’t even reviewed their CD yourselves! WTF?!

andrei | 8/18/2006, 10:02 pm EST

I agree dude.. Pearl jam’s “life wasted” for BEST SNUBBED.

PinkPick | 8/18/2006, 10:24 pm EST

Agree, on James Blunt. That song is more like, “You’re Beautiful Because You’re Easy.”

Brad hit the jackpot. “Denial Twist” and “Heard Em Say” wtf… those were two of the best videos of 06.

shookie blah | 8/18/2006, 11:46 pm EST

why does everyone brownnose jack white so much? he writes decent lyrics and all, but i think he’s made it painfully clear that, while he does reference obscure blues/folk artists, he is little more than a solo-mccartney wannabe. it’s like if you took the most boring things about macca (there are a LOT) and mixed them with the worst parts of zeppelin. there are a lot better people out there, (like greg cartwright/reigning sound) who do that way better than jack does. and i imagine RS didnt review the raconteurs disc b/c it more or less sucks and they dont wanna piss off their favorite clown.

asdf73 | 8/19/2006, 2:05 am EST

What are GNR?

Whateva | 8/19/2006, 2:17 am EST

To shookie blah: Ouch!

I think the Pussycat Dolls “Stickwitu” was a horrible attempt at being sensitive.

dpr | 8/19/2006, 3:11 am EST

3. James Blunt

Especially since the new version of his song turning “f–king high” into “flying high”. Totally different meanings.

4. Pearl Jam

No contest.

BTW, since we’re all talking Raconteurs, the song Steady as She Goes is a very good song, but man, their album as a whole was disappointing to me.

Jordy | 8/19/2006, 8:36 am EST

3)ANYTHING by Nick Lachey (Toss pot!)
4)The Importance of Being Idle by Oasis

个热饿 | 8/19/2006, 9:40 am EST

what are you talking about? no idea.

Dwayne W. | 8/19/2006, 9:57 am EST

As much as I like the Racontuers’ song, I think the video could have been much better! But generally speaking, I don’t see any good videos that really got snubbed. Still thinking, though…

Jimi | 8/19/2006, 10:03 am EST

Pearl Jam were definately snubbed!!Major shame Life Wasted is a fab video!

al gore | 8/19/2006, 12:20 pm EST

snubbed: “ghost of you” by my chemical romance
“the importance of being idle” oasis

trying to be sensitive: that one pussycat whores single

Trent | 8/19/2006, 1:48 pm EST

The Importance of Being Idle, Oasis

Ricky | 8/19/2006, 2:31 pm EST

3. I don’t know. As soon as somthin’ sappy shows up on MTV, I flip the channel.

4. The biggest snub was not allowing “Crazy” or “Gold Digger” go up for Video Of The Year and replacing them with Madonna (Not that good of a song) and Panic! at the Disco (hype).

I’ll never forgive them for not giving the Vid Of The Year to Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” or Jay-Z’s “99 Problems.” Or giving the Vid of the year to “Lady Marmalade” the same year as Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon Of Choice” and U2’s “Beautiful Day.”

Joe | 8/19/2006, 2:51 pm EST

I think the sappiest attempts to be sensitive and very overplayed songs is Daniel Powter BAD DAY!!!!!!!!

I think it sux that they snubbe Gwen Stefani’s Cool shes such a fashion icon.

poserhater | 8/19/2006, 3:06 pm EST

Please tell me where you guys actually see videos. Is there a TV station that still plays them?

This Note's For You | 8/19/2006, 3:43 pm EST

3. Don’t Lie – Black Eyed Peas: I missed taking this band seriously.

4. Stupid Girl – Pink: Easily the best made and most controversial video this year.

coolhand 71 | 8/19/2006, 3:59 pm EST

I hate MTV, 100% garbage and very little to do with music

voodoochile | 8/19/2006, 4:32 pm EST

um, they did review the raconteurs album. issue 1000. its just not online. so obviously those who state lies DONT ACTUALLY READ THE FUCKING MAGAZINE

manuel | 8/19/2006, 5:29 pm EST

mmm,the wost video for me is confessions of a broken heart by lindsay lohan,or maybe, ricky martin i don’t care,

Andy | 8/19/2006, 5:32 pm EST

anyway i hate mtv and the music they played over and over again, video stations always played the same songs, and the same shit,my love and respect only to kanye, missy, white stripes, and madonna, they’re the only good thing on Mtv

max | 8/19/2006, 8:31 pm EST

3. Rihanna- Murderer

4. Wolf Parade- Modern World (really sweet video)

Ale | 8/20/2006, 12:51 am EST

Best snubbed:
“What else is out there”- Royksopp
“Monster Hospital”- Metric
“Walk Away”- Franz Ferdinand

Bert | 8/20/2006, 4:13 am EST

A Note:

“4. The Ghost of You – My Chemical Romance (Three cheers for the return of the epic video! Gorgeous cinematograophy, brilliant editing, and better than average performances from the band).”

Spare me the bullshit. MCR are THE single most over-hyped, over-played, and over-the-top band out there, period. The video cost $500,000+ to make, money which could have gone to far better use (Hm…the video was released in September 2005, if only there had been some fund that $500,000 could have gone to for some, oh I don’t know, random natural disaster). The music is all but identical to the rest of the emo crowd, if not even more mall-punk. MCR will end up being what cheesy 80’s hair metal is now, which is to say, INSIGNIFICANT.

ladyli1 | 8/20/2006, 8:03 am EST

WHERE IS THE HELL GNARLS BARKLEY’S “CRAZY” FOR EVERYTHING???

Chris | 8/20/2006, 12:28 pm EST

Dead On Ricky about Johnny Cash, Weapon of Choice, 99 Problems. I’ll also add:

Crazy by Gnarls not being up for Vid of the Year.

Let’s throw in Crazy Bitch by Buckcherry. Yeah, I know its basically a porn video set to an AC/DC ripoff riff, but it doesn’t make any apologies and atleast it revels in its baseness, as opposed to every other “sexy” video out there.

lukas | 8/20/2006, 2:05 pm EST

Best Video the MTV VMAs Snubbed

JESUS OF SUBURBIA- GREEN DAY
a ground breaking video

Max Gardner | 8/20/2006, 3:25 pm EST

- Broken Social Scene – “7/4 (Shoreline)”
- Dungen – “Panda”
- Eagles of Death Metal – “I Want You So Hard (Boy’s Bad News)”

All been snubbed

Brady | 8/20/2006, 4:44 pm EST

Heard ‘em Say was weak by Gondry. WHat’s up with Joseph Kahn’s MUSE vid not getting looked at. THe best thing Kahn has ever put to film.

Ziluo Behnzukeh | 8/20/2006, 9:16 pm EST

Snubbed: The Strokes: You Only Live Once

you tube | 8/21/2006, 1:06 am EST

the best video of the year to be snubbed is november rain by guns and roses yeah dude its a dramatic video you know it don’t be ashamed

Mike27 | 8/21/2006, 3:25 am EST

Bert –

“Spare me the bullshit. MCR are THE single most over-hyped, over-played, and over-the-top band out there, period. Hey Bert, I dont know what career you’ll end up with – but I know music journalist would definately be out of the question. Save that one for people who actually have a clue about the music industry.

NickJ | 8/21/2006, 10:02 am EST

This topic is so frivolous, how can a channel that doesn’t show music videos have the balls to tell us what’s the best video. That’s like The Bible Network hosting the Porn Awards. If anything, Pearl Jam and the Raconteurs should be happy they got snubbed. MTV has such a shitty opinion of music that a band should be insulted that they were nominated. An MTV video award today is the equivalent of a “My Child is a Honor Student” Bumper Sticker.

on a side note, James Blunt is one cheesy bastard

Craig L. | 8/21/2006, 10:54 am EST

3. Don’t Lie- BEP
4. Snubbed- Geez Where do I begin?
Pearl Jam- Life Wasted
Weezer- Perfect Situation (Shitty Song, Good Video)
Raconteurs- Steady, As She Goes
RHCP- Tell Me Baby (They probably left it out because Dani has Enough Nods)
Arctic Monkeys- I’ll Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor

Drew | 8/21/2006, 1:48 pm EST

They left out a whole fucking catagory: Breakthrough video. Those videos are always the most original and I considered the winner of that video of the year. And how about nominating some good bands/artists for best new artist? Arctic Monkeys? Gnarls Barkley? The Raconteurs? Wolfmother? Fuck Chris Brown and Rihanna.

Roger | 8/21/2006, 1:52 pm EST

Video of the Year: Jesus of Suburia – Green Day.

Turtle Cheesecake | 8/21/2006, 4:04 pm EST

Cheesiest – James Blunt. Watching him makes me cringe.

Snubbed – Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day. Did MTV even play this video once?

airguitar | 8/21/2006, 6:07 pm EST

The “Eleanor” video by the Franz was awful, and so is Daniel Powter.

I gotta agree with whoever said “Crazy Bitch” by Buckcherry.

The original video’s pretty great for low-budget sleaze.

…but, I still like this one better.

http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=HEWJOQQdD-s

JSuzart | 8/22/2006, 12:18 am EST

Best video snubbed:
- The white stripes – the denial twist: one of the best Michel Gondry’s videos
- The chemical brothers – Believe
- Death Cab for cutie – Soul Meets Body
- Arctic Monkeys – I’ll bet you look good on the dancefloor
- Franz Ferdinand – Do you want to
- M.I.A.: Galang
- Gnarls Barkley – Crazy: Deserve more nods
But if they are interesting artists… I forgot it, it’s MTV!!!!
Cheesiest:
- Green Day – Wake me Up when september ends: Oh yeah, I am Billy Joe Armstrong and i’m afraid of war! why green day think they are so sensitive? they are corny
- My chemical romance: Helena. My girl is dead and I wanna dance in her funeral like a ballerina. Goth boys with tears in their eyes

Brian | 8/22/2006, 2:06 am EST

How about Korn’s twisted tranistor what a hillarious video and much more orginal and diffrent then what ever is out today,, and they dont even get a nod for best rock video or anything else for that matter

C | 8/22/2006, 12:08 pm EST

Green Day-Jesus of Suburbia got snubbed(along with “wake me up when september ends”). It was such a different and ground-breaking video, a 9-min long song and an even longer video, you don’t see Panic! at the Disco doing anything original like that.

Pearl Jam-Life Wasted because they don’t make many videos and this one was amazing. The only thing better than that video was the song.

MissAnnMarie | 8/25/2006, 5:32 pm EST

yes, Rolling Stone DID review the Raconteurs album when it came out–I have the issue–and it got 4 out of 5 stars, which I agreed with. Though, the songs are far superior when you hear them played LIVE in concert, than on the album…The White Stripes Denial Twist video, by the master Gondry, IS the most snubbed video this year, hands down!!!

C | 8/25/2006, 6:41 pm EST

3. Cheesiest Attempt to Appear “Sensitive”: Nick Lachey-What’s Left of Me

4. Best Video the MTV VMAs Snubbed-Raconteurs and Green Day

Max | 8/25/2006, 7:00 pm EST

JSuzart | 8/22/2006, 12:18 am EST

Cheesiest:
- Green Day – Wake me Up when september ends: Oh yeah, I am Billy Joe Armstrong and i’m afraid of war! why green day think they are so sensitive? they are corny

You better be talking about the video when you say they’re cheesy. The video’s about war(and it’s a good video), but the song isn’t. The song is deals with a sensitive issue(and it’s not a cheesy attempt to apppear sensitive either). His dad died in September and that’s what the song’s about, and it ain’t corny. so you can just go play in traffic if you’re making fun of the song b/c my dad died in september too and that song helps me a lot.
