Introducing Rolling Stone’s First Annual “Dark Side of the Moonman” Awards (Part 1 of 5)

8/17/06, 3:12 pm EST

MTV Video Music Awards, FergieAs everyone knows, on August 31st Radio City Music Hall will once again play host to MTV’s Video Music Awards. We reserve judgment on the quality of this year’s event: although we could say some snarky things about today’s announcement of the presenters and performers, we choose not to. Instead, we’re starting our own awards, right here, on this very blog.

Introducing Rolling Stone’s first annual “Dark Side of the Moonman Awards.” We’ll be announcing categories for the next five days, and we need your nominations. Then we’ll hold a big vote starting at the end of next week.

Here are the first two categories.

1. Worst Video
(Staff suggestion: Fergie, “London Bridge (Oh Shit!)”)

2. Video You’d Be Most Uncomfortable Watching With Your Parents
(Staff suggestion: Buck Cherry, “Crazy Bitch”)

Nominations must have been released after August 1, 2005, but need not be “official” videos – stuff that never got released but can be found on YouTube, or something that only appears on the band’s site is all fair game. Let the nominations fly!

THE CHAD IS MY GODFATHER | 8/17/2006, 3:25 pm EST

I NOMINATE

BEST MALE VIDEO
THE CHAD
http://www.youtube.com/watchv=nY l09JZlPg8

Cliff | 8/17/2006, 4:15 pm EST

How about Natalie Portman for best Rap video? Her SNL digital short proved she’s far and away a more skilled MC than anyone nominated in the actual category this year.

Kyla | 8/17/2006, 4:23 pm EST

I nominate Far Away by Nickelback, because all of they’re videos are the same, and they are really sappy. I’m embarassed that we are from the same place.
For the uncomfortable one, I would pick Paris Hilton, not only because she is scantily clad, but because we would just start crying because the sound is so bad!

President of CCDSY | 8/17/2006, 4:24 pm EST

The “Dani California” video is really awful and the video idea is 20 year old at least. Perhaps they lost Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris number… (I heard some comments that said that the song is not really new too). And the last double album is not good enough. But I like RCHP, really.

andrew | 8/17/2006, 4:34 pm EST

the answer to both nominations is “I write sins not tragedies” by Panic! at the Disco. One because the song and video sucks balls, two because the song and video sucks balls

get a life | 8/17/2006, 4:37 pm EST

i think paris hilton’s stars are blind or kelis’ bossy are the worst videos (as well as fergie)

Alexandre | 8/17/2006, 5:07 pm EST

I nominate “Shake that ass” by Eminem.

Billy | 8/17/2006, 5:17 pm EST

Worst Video
“I Write Sins Not Tragedies”
Panic! at the Disco

Most Awkward Video
Any Pussycat Dolls

Mike | 8/17/2006, 5:19 pm EST

They still play videos on MTV?

manbearpig | 8/17/2006, 5:20 pm EST

yeah panic! at the disco, yeah they suck, i hate them, and i think that they should never call themselves “rock” because them and every emo band are disgraces to any decent rock band.

PinkPick | 8/17/2006, 5:23 pm EST

Worst Video
Everything suggested so far… Even “Dani California” because MTV and VH1 really know how to overplay a music video and make you stop caring better than the radio.

If my parents watched any Nickelback music video with me they’d be even more convinced that rock is dead.

brian | 8/17/2006, 5:28 pm EST

i agree, the red hot chili peppers ” Dani California” is such a old video concept. C’mon couldnt you think of anything else?

Scream | 8/17/2006, 5:29 pm EST

I Write Sins Not Tradgedies has to be the worst. Its creepy and the song sucks. Every time it comes on Tv I have to mute it.

London Bridge and PCD’s Buttons are awful too. Pretty much everything everyone else said sucks too, except for Dani California…Which is the only recent music video Im not tired of yet.

pedro alves | 8/17/2006, 5:39 pm EST

jamie fox unpredictable bad bad bad…
and awful song…
really crap…

jim F | 8/17/2006, 6:30 pm EST

Video REALLY DID kill the radio star!

Suzanne | 8/17/2006, 6:50 pm EST

If we’re not limiting it to MTV, I think the Chronic (WHAT)cles of Narnia rap by Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell from SNL should win something. I still laugh until I cry when I watch that.

Here’s the thing: they don’t play videos on MTV anymore. Why artists still spend so much money filming a video for an entire song is a wonder to me. Just film 30 seconds for TRL because that’s all they play. However I did see the Stars Are Blind video by Paris Hilton on You Tube and it, as well as the song are both truly awful. And it’s not because I hate Paris Hilton. The song and video are just awful.

I agree that Natalie Portman should get an award for Best Rap Video from her performance on SNL. The video and song are hilarious and she’s so into it.

James | 8/17/2006, 7:43 pm EST

You really can’t pick a “worst” video because they all pretty much suck equally these days. There is no such thing as a “ground breaking video” such as;”Losing My Religion, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Jeremy”, or “Stan”. But I guess would have to go to the new Busta Rhymes video. Not only becuase all it did was unoriginally rip off a crap movie, but also because Busta’s videos used to be so unique and cool.
Most uncomfortable goes to Gwen Stefani’s “Holla Back Girl”. It’s always uncomfortable to watch a California rocker white girl TRY to go ghetto with an 8 girl Japanese entourage. Ouch.

Tokyo Matt | 8/17/2006, 7:44 pm EST

Worst video: David Hasslehoff’s “Get Into My Car.”
I think I’d be embarrassed to watch it with my mom too, because she’s be upset at my lack of taste.

Love4Flea | 8/17/2006, 7:56 pm EST

How the hell could some of you nominate “Dani California” ?!? If anything that was one hell of a concept. I don’t even care if it was done before(which I don’t think it was). How bout some videos that ACTUALLY suck like Jessica Simpson’s “Public Affair” or “Steady As She Goes”(the soapbox racing version)

Shaneman | 8/17/2006, 8:17 pm EST

For Worst Video…

Coldplay’s “The Hardest Part” should definitely be looked at.

I’m a huge Coldplay fan, but after I watched that, I could not understand what I just saw.

It’s THAT bad.

m | 8/17/2006, 8:31 pm EST

1. Worst Video: “Stars are Blind” Paris Hilton.

2. Video You’d Be Most Uncomfortable Watching With Your Parents: “Stars are Blind” Paris Hilton.

it’s a sweep!

Rockstrongo | 8/17/2006, 9:51 pm EST

Worst video : “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” Panic! at the Disco. Creepy to the bones and just plain awful.I have nightmare every time i see it and keep in mind that i had no problem sleeping after watching hostel.

Oh and the rabbit blowjob from that Jared Leto video… also very creepy…

Spanish Teacher 16 | 8/17/2006, 9:56 pm EST

I know I will catch flack for this, but Deja Vu by Beyonce. It sucks, and the song sounds like crazy in love.

Brad | 8/17/2006, 10:03 pm EST

It is just sad what some of our main street rock artists will do for money. My God, I read an article about Tom Petty and his uniqueness almost brought me to tears. It’s the rockers of our yester years (and the greats today) that show us the alleys and paths of the less traveled…I don’t know much about music, but the human soul can mysteriously understand passion and the creativity of someone’s personallity…which very purely travels through song. I really don’t like this main stream thing

wherezthubeef?? | 8/17/2006, 10:25 pm EST

can’t tell ya. MTV stopped showing videos years ago, and VH1 is for old people.

Suzanne | 8/17/2006, 10:45 pm EST

I nominate the Chronic of Narnia Rap from SNL with Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell. You can find it on You Tube. I still laugh until I cry everytime I see it.
And I agree Natalie Portman should win for best rap video for her rap from SNL. She was so into it.

dali lama | 8/17/2006, 11:54 pm EST

thank you “wherezthubeef??” you’re 100% right

Kyla | 8/18/2006, 12:11 am EST

For my second nomination! I agree with Shaneman for Coldplay’s the hardest part. While it was a pretty different and original concept, it just didn’t fit the music and I couldn’t get into it. sorry guys, still like your music though!
Well this is a video i actually did see with my mom and it’s Pearl Jam’s life wasted video. And I was pretty suprised that it was on because they only played it one time! (stupid bastards at muchmusic) Well anyway she couldn’t watch it because if you have seen it, there are a lot of shots of fire burning molds of their heads, them being tortured in many ways. Well I think it was one of the best videos I have seen in some time, and that’s pretty good being they don’t make too many videos. But Muchmusic only played it one time, and while I guess they have good reason to(Pearl Jam always gets screwed over in record sales)those are the videos they should be playing, because they are the ones that actually make you want to watch it, and want to watch it again. Thanks for reading. Pearl Jam Rocks!

Eric | 8/18/2006, 12:15 am EST

I agree with Coldplay “the hardest part” being nominated for something. I felt this was one of the weaker songs on the album, even though i still liked it, and the video is just wierd. What does this old lady have to do with the song? I’m sure it’s hard for her to do all that dancing around, but still, it doesn’t fit. I still think the guys at Coldplay are great, but this just doesn’t make me happy.

Sean C. | 8/18/2006, 12:24 am EST

Dante | 8/18/2006, 1:50 am EST

It’s a sad day for mankind as a whole when you can see more good videos per hour by watching stuff from the 80s on VH1 Classic, then by watching MTV2 or Fuse.

The 80s, for christ’s sake! It was a shitty decade for music! Remember folks?!

P.S. I’m eagerly awaiting the impending rush of 90s Alt-Rock videos to VH1 Classic. It’s already starting to happen…

Jimi | 8/18/2006, 5:28 am EST

The award for ‘You should put your 50 year old fandango away and never let it remotely come near human eyes (or animal) again’

And it goes to….drum roll please….Madonna!

brian | 8/18/2006, 5:59 am EST

I nominated worst video: “Stars are Blind” Paris Hilton.

Ryan | 8/18/2006, 7:18 am EST

Eminem, Shake That Ass and When I’m Gone.

Awful, awful stuff. Just awful.

Just…awful.

Eminem, go away. Thanks.

Yes Sir | 8/18/2006, 8:51 am EST

Dont forget that “unofficial” Cassie video for “Me & U” that was borderline R. Kelly Porn.

cure gastroparesis | 8/18/2006, 9:03 am EST

limp bizkit- behind blue eyes

….throws up

cure gastroparesis | 8/18/2006, 9:04 am EST

new madonna vid in swim suit

throws up

NickJ | 8/18/2006, 9:08 am EST

I agree with Sean C, any thing involving Kevin Federline could easily win Worst “whatever”. I really F@CKING hate when people ride their others to fame when clearly they have no talent or motor fuction. Kevin Federline makes me wish extremely late term abortions were legal. I have a feeling that his album is gonna be so bad, it makes Macho Man Randy Savage’s rap album look like “The Bluprint”

so we can all agree that “K-Fed” is a big piece of sh!t and should be exiled

cure gastroparesis | 8/18/2006, 9:11 am EST

any youtube vid. of axl rose’s new look in a live performance

throws up

cure gastroparesis | 8/18/2006, 9:14 am EST

fergies hot- would like 2 c rollingstone’s worst video suggestion

not sure whether to throw up

jeff | 8/18/2006, 9:23 am EST

Buck cherry is a great choice. Finally some old fashion rock-n-roll attitude. MTV needs that.

Jacob | 8/18/2006, 10:27 am EST

Worst Video:

Lady in the Water by M. Night Shaymalan.

HORRIBLE! I know it’s not a music video….but it’s so bad it should be nominated anyway!

johnnygunit | 8/18/2006, 10:39 am EST

Anyone see that pic of Fergie in Sp!n when she pissed herself. Just not attractive…

fashizzle | 8/18/2006, 11:16 am EST

Stars are Blind by Paris Hilton.
Garbage.

Dick | 8/18/2006, 11:35 am EST

How about any of the faceless R&B videos that came out this year. The entire genre needs to go away. Having a good voice is one thing, but there has not been any artistic merit in R&B since the early days of R. Kelly.

Who listens to this shit anyway. It is a dead end genre….there is no expanding on it. These videos all give me retarded tickles.

thomfoolery | 8/18/2006, 11:55 am EST

madonna = 50 yrs old (roughly) = too old to dress up in leotards. Yuck. Can anyone say airbrush? What’s the female version of old man balls?

Scotty Checkbooks | 8/18/2006, 12:27 pm EST

I think that the video for “Programmed to Party” by Wolves of Flatbush should take home best video – they just touch me in the right places!!!!!!!

cari loves coldplay | 8/18/2006, 12:50 pm EST

any video that is rap or hiphop nowadays just sucks…..bad

shayla | 8/18/2006, 1:27 pm EST

lol thats so true any rap vidoe today sucks!

aron | 8/18/2006, 1:30 pm EST

Any Mariah Scary video!!! She thinks she’s hot, but nobody else does…or will, or does, etc. LOL!

lukas | 8/18/2006, 1:33 pm EST

THERES not one rap video that doesnt have dancing hoes with there ass checks out , so BRING ROCK BACK, im suffacting

Vino | 8/18/2006, 1:45 pm EST

All videos suck, so its a tie.

Ben | 8/18/2006, 2:02 pm EST

What about rollin with Saget by Jamie Kennedy and Stu Stone (i think that’s his name). I crack up everytime i hear that song.

ERik | 8/18/2006, 2:56 pm EST

ERik | 8/18/2006, 2:57 pm EST

Wonders if cure gastroparesis is bulimic.
That’s a lot of vomit

Tara | 8/18/2006, 3:10 pm EST

“Public Affair” by Jessica Simpson. Nauseating song, nauseating video. Please go away, PLEASE! And take your sister with you.

rockstar70 | 8/18/2006, 3:19 pm EST

how can there be a video awards show when MTV stopped showing videos!!

Malachi | 8/18/2006, 3:28 pm EST

Spanish Teacher you suck ass!!! Deja Vu is great. Whats ovverated is Aguilera Aint No Other Man. How is she a genuis for knocking off the 20s and 30s !!!

Bell | 8/18/2006, 3:29 pm EST

That Beyonce video for Deja Vu is a load of crap….she might call what she is doing “dancing” but it looks more like a seizure. And grabbing Jay-Z’s belt doesn’t help much.

Richie Rich | 8/18/2006, 3:37 pm EST

That syrupy crap from Nick Lachey….whaaaaaaaah….my phony TV marriage came to an end…..sob!

Rachel | 8/18/2006, 3:38 pm EST

I totally agree on panic! at the disco being crap. Besides Nickleback, most overrated band EVER. and the worst part?? people think that song is actually deep! too much paris hilton in pop music is the culprit. compared to stars are blind, i write sins not tradgedies has some depth.

Alexandre | 8/18/2006, 4:08 pm EST

Madonna still rocks the world! Her Hung Up video is fantastic! She is in a great shape so she can wear a leotard.
She is 48 years old not 50 and she is better than a lot of young girls.

rhcp109401 | 8/18/2006, 4:29 pm EST

First off..everyone that says MTV doesnt show videos anymore needs to shut up. Not only does MTV show videos, but theres more music video channels out there. So dont be dumb, and shut up.

And its funny how people complain about music. If you dont like it…dont listen to it. Its really that simple. You people are annoying. Shut up.

I dont really know what would be the “worst video”. All of you people are picking videos of genres you hate. Thats stupid. Yopu gotta have a wide vareity of music. Unfaithful by Rhianna was boring, so probably that. Or Buttons, because its funny to see how only one Pussycat Doll sings.

Deja Vu was a cool video, stop doggin on it. And whoever nominated Dani California for this can die. Get serious. That was a great video (hence the 7 nominations. Good call dumbass)

Whateva | 8/18/2006, 4:54 pm EST

Worst Videos:
Beyonce “Deja Vu”
Panic at the Disco-I don’t know the name of the song, but it sucks and so do they.
Any Ashlee Simpson video
Anything by Rihanna is horrible.
Fergie sucks, the song and the video are both horrible.
Cassie “Me & U”-Enough said.

I actually like “Dani California”.

Lermal | 8/18/2006, 5:03 pm EST

Any Rap video since the late ’90’s. Zero imagination. Rap video’s have turned into the Hair Metal video’s of the late ’80’s.

pete | 8/18/2006, 5:07 pm EST

the worst song of this summer is, undoubtley, Paris Hilton’s “Stars are Blind”. Well, I don’t think that because of how dumb and blonde she is, but because the song and the videoclip are too bad. Nothing happens in that video – she just kiss a man. It could be more romantic.

Kez | 8/19/2006, 3:00 am EST

Madonna Hung Up for worst vid. She is 48 years old and looks like she should be soliciting on a street corner. She is airbrushed, she doesnt look good. My mum is also 48years old and there is no way she’d wear a leotard even though she looks amazing. MADONNA IS A TRAMP!!Put your nearly 50 year old MINGE AWAY!!

Joe | 8/19/2006, 2:56 pm EST

First of all I hope Madonna wins cause shes the queen.

Next i think the worst video of the year is Call on me Janet and Nelly pretty scary make up going on with Janet there.

The video i’d be uncomftorble watching with my parents is the Sexyback i think it’s way to sexy to watch with other people!

This Note's For You | 8/19/2006, 3:58 pm EST

1. So much competition, it’s easier to pick the handful of videos that didn’t suck, and call it a “tie” between the remaining videos.
OK, if I was going to pick the most cringe-worthy video this year. “(Who’s said) You Can’t Go Home” by Bon Jovi. Cheesy video with an equally cheesy song.

2. Beep – Pussycat Dolls: Watching women writhe around in their underwear insinuating things they don’t intend to utter, because that will keep their song from getting played. If I didn’t change the channel fast enough, I know my mother would hit me over the head with the TV.

Change The Channel | 8/19/2006, 4:01 pm EST

1. snap yo fingas

2. buttons by pussycat dolls

Erin | 8/20/2006, 2:36 am EST

Paris Hilton… where should I begin? The fact that the song SUCKS or the fact the video itself totally ripped off Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” video?

Chicken Taco | 8/20/2006, 5:08 pm EST

I want to know who gets to name the nominees in the first place. They all need to consider a different career.

Ziluo Behnzukeh | 8/20/2006, 9:17 pm EST

Worst: Mr. Me too (clipse and pharrel)

Uncomfortable: Pussycat dolls (buttons)

Craig L. | 8/21/2006, 10:44 am EST

Worst Video: Stars Are Blind
Uncomfortable: Any video by PCD. Its like watching porn but the music isn’t as good

CHANEL THE GREAT | 8/21/2006, 4:48 pm EST

STOP THROWING SALT ON BEYONCE’S GAME!!!! The song and video were beautiful. Its amazing to me that everyone is complaining about the dancing when the style of dance just happens to be AFRICAN!!!!!!!! Also, the video was way less risque than past videos from her! how was grabbing her BOYFRIENDS (keyword here) belt raunchy?!? You as the listeners always ask for something new and different, then when you get it you criticize the artists for breaking the mold!!! YOUR NEVER SATISFIED

Craig | 8/21/2006, 9:17 pm EST

i fully agree with rachel’s opinion of nickelback

I vote for CRAZY BITCH! | 8/21/2006, 9:55 pm EST

Good call on the “Video you’d be most Uncomfortable Watching with your Parents”. I actually did watch it with my parents and it was…. awkward.

JSuzart | 8/21/2006, 11:44 pm EST

Worst Video:
- AFI – Miss Murder: No comments, just monkey crap
- Paris Hilton – Stars are Blind: i wish i was blind and not see your stupid face anymore. Paris thinks she is a singer, but still acts like a retard.
- David Hasselhoff – Get into my car: I don’t know if this is a REALLY awesome joke or a mediocre one but if the Hoff intentions was to show why we deserve the apocalipse, he made it.
- Coldplay – The Hardest part
- Bon Jovi – (Who said) you can’t go home:
They were trying to be creative but…

Awkward video:
- Pussycat dolls – Buttons: that’s cheap. i would be more confortable watching a playboy video with my grandma, because the girls don’t look so desperate

- Eminem – Shake that Ass: after 30 seconds, i feel like an asshole watching puppets smoking, dancing on a pole… i feel ashamed: this is what the people of my age hear. and it’s not interesting, for anybody

C | 8/22/2006, 12:13 pm EST

Worst Video-anything by the Pussy Cat Dolls, Ashlee Simpson, Paris Hilton, Madonna(she should be dead soon anyway so why’s she still making videos?)and Nick Lachey.
Most Awkward to Watch With Parents-Paris Hilton

Penny Woods | 8/22/2006, 7:25 pm EST

Uh, all these nominations based on artists/genres people hate are stupid. There’s even a mini-Madonna/Mariah hate thread here. Grow up, people. Just because you like a certain artist doesn’t mean you have to partake in some stupid feud created by crazed fans.

Oh, this is the WORST VIDEO thread; there are other Best threads for this blog. Look for them.

Worst video: Oh, so hard. The Beyonce singles need ADHD medication. And I still do not see how MTV gave Madonna a nod for best video for “Hung Up.” Watching Madonna in spandex is the most uncomfortable thing ever.

JSuzart | 8/25/2006, 11:08 am EST

More bad videos to consider:
LOVE – Ashlee Simpson: She wants to be a rebel-punk-pop-”i don’t care what my parents think”-cool girl, and makes a horrible, horrible, horrible video where looks like a homeless with a pretty cellphone

When I’m Gone – Eminem: I can’t believe people aren’t tired of Slim Shady using his private life to make money. OK, he made some good stuff, but did you listen Encore? And now he tells us that his daughter hates him… Make better music and don’t use her, asshole, maybe she will forgive you

Cris | 8/26/2006, 9:39 am EST

Fergie, definately Fergie. Dry humping a human statue is about as sexy as, well, a human statue.

jonny | 9/22/2006, 11:05 pm EST
