Elvis: Still Dead, Still the King

8/17/06, 12:37 pm EST

As some of you fellow rock nerds know, yesterday marked the twenty-ninth anniversary of the death our much-beloved, junk food-loving rock & roll hero, one Mr. Elvis Presley. In his honor, we put together a playlist of our fave songs, and came across this incredible clip of the King performing “Unchained Melody” six weeks before his death. This much is still clear: Homeboy could emote.

When elvis sold out in 1957 with the colonel I gave up as I always thought that Chuck Berry is and always wil be the KING OF ROCK ROLL. I have been from the start a little white boy in the early 50’s who didn’t think that white idiots were the only ones who knew about rythm thinking. Chuck, Fats, Lloyd, and the best of all unknowns Bo Diddley made me a rock and roll maven. As far as Elvis, he is DEAD and will remain so.

I saw Chuck Berry on Tv 2 days ago in a fight with keith Richards. Oh, well. He’s still dead is he?
I think Bhagawan Soaham is too, I think they got him in 1982. Something about a fire.
I wonder what that was about. Could it have anything to do with that pamphlet someone stole from me, where he says The Beatles are too expensive? And then maybe Paul did a song about Little Lucifer fire starters after someone maybe did an arson inside Ben Acre Close 1972, just after that Easter blackout via dark areas? etc.
Well, in some ways I’d prefer to forget Elvis. I mean they still are burying him here.

I can’t help but respect Elvis, if not for his music, then certainly for his diversity. Afterall, he was America’s first rock n’ roll “star”. We can’t deny his contributions to rock, soul, blues, country, and gospel. And besides, who else would buy everyone in thier entourage a new, fully loaded Cadillac, whether they wanted it or not?
