Live Review: Sonic Youth and Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Brooklyn

8/15/06, 12:44 pm EST

Sonic YouthYeah Yeah YeahsOnly a few objects on earth are visible from space: the Great Wall of China, Nick Zinner’s gothgantuan hair, Thurston Moore’s willowy neck, the Pyramids, Karen O’s purple tights and feathery minidress… Okay, maybe not the Pyramids. But a double bill of Sonic Youth and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? In an abandoned swimming pool in Williamsburg, Brooklyn? They would have had to try hard to screw up a hometown show like this. These are two of the most beloved New York bands of the past twenty-five years, repping two generations of eat-me downtown cool. How many of us have made our pilgrimage to the corner of Orchard and Delancey, just because Thurston sang about his cosmic revelations there in “Stereo Sanctity”? (Now it’s just a block away from the new Lower East Side Starbucks. Awesome! I’ll have the Eric’s Trippucino with extra Evol and room for feedback please!)

Sonic Youth sent out the wild wail of East Village freedom with their guitars, and more than any other young local band, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs grabbed it and gave it a new twist for the Berliniamsburger era. Seeing the YYYs in McCarren Pool is like seeing the Dead in Golden Gate Park, except the whole twirling-naked-in-puddles thing. McCarren Pool has swiftly become one of the city’s best-cherished rock venues–it’s a pool, for Chrissake. You’re in a happy mood as soon as you step inside. It holds 5000 people, but you can see from anywhere, the mood is commune-peaceful, and even crap bands sound decent with that much cement reverb. All summer long, the pool has hosted great indie-rock gigs (Deerhoof, Bloc Party, Enon, Dead Meadow, The Slip, Secret Machines, Les Savy Fav) but nobody has rocked the crumbling concrete like these two bands. Despite the guitar noise, the vibe was family-sweet: Karen O’s mom and dad were shaking ass in the crowd, while Sonic Youth’s kids ran amok and played with glowsticks.

For the Friday and Saturday shows, the bands switched off headlining duties, but both sounded best on Saturday, when the YYYs opened for the Youth. The ultimate Willie-Aames-Burg warriors attacked the stage with a barrage of their rockingest songs–“Black Tongue,” “Mystery Girl,” “Cheated Hearts,” and “Bang.” Nick Zinner’s guitar is one of the most dangerous weapons on earth, so it’s no surprise he had trouble getting it through customs (though it didn’t help he had a Dirtbombs sticker on the case). How does such a little vampire make such an epic Transylvanian-metal noise? Karen O wore some kind of Egyptian Isis outfit, complete with blue feathers and gold-lionness headdress. She looked regal, screeching “I wish I could buy back the woman you stole” and making the guys in the house feel it wouldn’t be such a bad deal except we would never EVER give that woman up and that’s that. By the time they hit “Rich,” the YYYs made even the most rigid-hipped scenesters adopt an emergency booty-loosening policy. As the sun set, they dedicated the acoustic “Maps” to their friend and fashion guru Christian Joy, getting married the next day, with Karen sermonizing, “This is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs love song, motherfuckers…and love is our religion.” Preach, sister, preach.

Sonic Youth opened their set with “Teenage Riot,” rocking the bones of a fervent crowd, most of whom were barely out of kindergarden when *Daydream Nation* came out. They did loads of oldies–“Eric’s Trip,” “100%,” “Shaking Hell”–but truth be told, the new songs from *Rather Ripped* were even hotter, as the twin guitars of Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore rippled in the pool. On Friday, Thurston introduced “a song we co-wrote with Brooklyn resident Michael Gira,” stoking the over-forty fans who cherish the memory of Swans classics like *Raping a Slave*, but mostly just amusing themselves, which is always a good idea for Sonic Youth. Under the summer stars, nobody wanted the show to end, and as long as Lee Ranaldo kept clanging away at “Pink Steam,” it didn’t. These bands have made two of 2006’s best albums so far, and this is the sort of historic show people will be falsely claiming they attended years from now, so get your story straight now.

This whole genre of music is tasteless. It is recommended for people who don’t have a musical ear or care about lyrics. The grunting and inability to make a melody is for those without vocal or song writing ability. Check out Jason Mraz or Kevin Max for some musicality.

now John,
if you ever read this,i hope you do,please smile and you won’t be a sexist, rape person like that guy from g’n'r.Please read i know you won’t be smilling
hahahahh
i’ll do that for you
and kirk hammet loved nirvana so you’re own facts are really not facts

In 1991, with new producer Bob Rock, Huey felt Metallica simplified and streamlined its music for a more commercial approach to appeal to the mainstream audience.[75] The band abandoned its aggressive, fast tempos to expand its music and expressive range, said Robert Palmer of Rolling Stone.[76] The change in direction proved commercially successful as Metallica was the band’s first album to peak at number one on the Billboard 200. Metallica noticed changes to the rock scene created by grunge band Nirvana in the 1990s. In what has been described as “an almost alternative [rock]” approach, the band focused on non-metal influences and changed musical direction.[77] Moving away from lyrical themes dealing with drugs and monsters, Metallica’s new lyrical approach focused on anger, loss, and retribution.

sonic youth is like a mascot for one of the worst generations ever. They are Gen-X’s answer…answer to what? how to spot a gen Xer who thinks he is cooler than you…he will mention Sonic Youth. Like Juno said, its just noise.

rebecca | 3/15/2008, 9:27 pm EST

mercedez,
i believe it is you who is unbelievably ignorant

Guns n Roses has no punk edge to it. Have you ever listened to punk music? there is nothing punk about guns n roses, and that is an insult to all punk-listeners, especially bc they sing about NOTHING important. The music sucks, and they sing about tits and beer…

Furthermore, They did NOT bring back ANYTHING from the 70’s and although theyre not a hair metal band, they are typical 80’s crap metal…

trash your guns n roses cd, and buy an x ray spex instead

Mercedez | 1/2/2008, 3:51 pm EST

nox you are unbelievably ignorant!! Guns n’ Roses never were a hair band–they brought back 70’s hard rock, refined it and added a punk edge to it…and WOW your comment on Metallica proves your intelligence…have you heard anything by Metallica before the Black Album?? …John, great posts man you know what you’re talking about, especially when it comes to Nirvana!!

nox | 8/13/2007, 7:10 am EST

lol @ john, you’re a bit uninformed mate. i think you’ll find that in fact guns and roses are in fact a generic hair band and the only thing metallica has going for them is their tight pants. go grab some intelligence and then you may be able to understand sonic youth (:

SomeOne | 12/22/2006, 7:00 pm EST

Listen dude Sonic Youth is a good band and I don’t have to rip on anybody’s elses bands to get my point across.Sonic Youth has been around since the 80’s bro,and yes they can play their instruments they just want to make their sound more distorted and trashy sounding that’s the whole point of the band geeeesh.Actually guitarist Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine also uses the method of not always playing the guitar but more less screwin around with it and getting other sounds from it,and even if you don’t like his work you still have to admit that he has talant.
Anyway Sonic Youth is the defintion of a band that puts emotion and conflict in their music and worries more about their peices as art not just as some 2 to 3 minute track with guitar solos every which way to catch peoples attension.I wish people like you would just grow up and stop being so judgemenal about music tastes and if you don’t like a music artist than don’t listen to them simple as that,I’m sure theres a whole lot of people who dislike Sonic Youth just as much as every other band, and you’re not changing anybody elses opinion just by saying they suck.
Peace out.

williamsburger | 8/16/2006, 7:18 pm EST

thanks, thfs.

How come the people who work at Live Nation have clearchannel.com email addresses then? How come they share a pension plan, accounts payable dept, and board of directors? Clear Channel “spun off” Live Nation to get out of a class action antitrust suit. And that suit was then refiled in federal court in Denver, naming both Clear Channel and Live Nation. They are the same thing.

Secondly, the .25/ per ticket is a matter of public record–it’s in the proposal that Clear Ch–whoops, I mean Live Nation–submitted to the city. I’d love to see the accounting where your imaginary $10,000 for the pool came from. Got a copy of the check?

I know the Jelly people and I know all about how Clear–I mean Live Nation! got involved with the pool, and believe me, there are many many people in this community doing all we can to get them OUT. It’s not like they don’t have venues all over this city, including Williamsburg, already! They don’t need to be making profits off of a public park.

Calling someone who is anti-CLear Channel a “Karl Rove” is pretty hilarious considering how much money they give to the Republican Party.

Oh and it’s “loser,” not “looser,” loser.

thfs | 8/16/2006, 12:22 pm EST

Also, someone from Live Nation/Clear Channel calling neighborhood residents Karl Rove? That’s rich. Maybe Live Nation executives should stop donating to Karl Rove’s boss and then we can talk.

And Jelly NYC is giving a big-ass gift to the pool at the end of the summer, so get your facts straight too!

And for all you hipsters out there, the reason Clear Channel spun off Live Nation in the first place was because for some reason independent-minded people felt bad going to shows run by a right-wing monopolistic corporation.

thfs | 8/16/2006, 12:09 pm EST

I’ve seen the financials behind the Live Nation shows (thank you Freedom of Information Act!) and it’s only a small, small portion of the $$ that goes to the city.

This is the MOST EXPENSIVE rock concert in brooklyn. Why are people shelling out tons of money for a concert in a public park.

Why are greenpoint and williamsburg getting the shaft? Why are free shows the norm in Central Park and Prospect Park but not in McCarren Pool?

And while Live Nation is technically a separate company, they remain closely intertwined with Clear Channel, sharing board members, managers, corporate officers, PR, HR, accounting, and legal services

Get your facts together 2 | 8/16/2006, 11:02 am EST

Oh, and as far as the ticket price was concerned, you must have stayed in your underware at your laptop and bought intead of going to an outlet (in the city or williamsburg where they were established and availabe even the week/day of the show) where your could have bought your tickets much cheaper and with no service charge.

As far as the .25 per ticket, well, there again, you have no clue what you are talking about. Those shows raised money in the tens of thousands of dollars for the pool. And no, as cool as the free shows are, the concessions and all money raised do NOT go to the pool. Sorry. Just like these shows, a portion goes to the city. Try getting involved and go to a community board meeting and seeing if you learn anything. It is better that being an uninformed douch.

Get your facts together | 8/16/2006, 10:51 am EST

Williamsburger, you are a class A moron. I worked on that show on the artist side and you have no idea what you are talking about. The company that did it, Live Nation, is not part of Clear Channel and it’s Karl Rove-type people like you that only perpetuate lies like this to the determent of why this these shows are happening- for the sake of helping the pool. Both the free shows and the paid for events would not have happened without Live Nation- you can ask the JellyNYC people yourself (who are producing the free shows), who were in attendence those nights. So, before you start casting stones and THINK you know what you are talking about, get your fact straight. This is all for the Pool and it is only uninformed loosers like you that think it is anything else.

williamsburger | 8/16/2006, 9:22 am EST

The Sonic Youth/YYY shows were put on by CLear Channel, a predatory pro-war radio-monpoly-building company. Of the $52 ticket price, $.25 went to the community and the effort to restore the pool further. Contrast that with the fantastic FREE shows every Sunday, where the acts have included Dead Meadows, Deerhoof, Detroit Cobras–and the WAlkmen and others are coming soon. The FREE shows run on donations, and all the money made, including all the money from concessions, goes to the community.

You’re a great writer, Rob, but you missed the real story that was right under your nose.

“Axl Rose is about to release the most anticipated record ever made for any genre of music.”

Please John, find a dictionary soon, because it’s obvious that you do not know the meaning of the following words:

most
anticipated
g enre
music

JOHN | 8/15/2006, 7:43 pm EST

Lmao…There is nothing to “get” you see you guys think you are so cool and edgy because you listen to “underground bands” Well guess what..ALL bands are underground before they hit it big. There were no radio stations that wanted to play GNR or Metallica before they hit it big…record labels wouldn’t even touch them. I own lots of underground albums, and all of Nirvana’s albums. Nirvana was cool in 1994 when I was 12..but looking back at them now..they really werent that good. You guys thought you were so cool back in 1994..you thought your grunge music ended rock n’ roll…but it never did. I wish Kurt Cobain were alive today so he can see the success Axl Rose is having. GN’R was the band Kurt Cobain hated the most…and also couldn’t touch. It is worth noting that GNR sold out stadiums across the world during the entire grunge movement…Not to mention the fact that today..all these years later Axl Rose is about to release the most anticipated record ever made for any genre of music..and he doesnt even have the original band backing him…imagine if he did…it would be even bigger than it is now…if thats possible When grunge broke?? yeah its hard to imagine where the music business would be today if it werent for bands like Mudhoney and the Screaming Trees..the best bands of the early 90’s..AIC, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots…none of them were grunge..Pearl Jam even abandoned the out of date fad…and thats what it was a fad…real talent always prevails, and that is why bands like GNR, Metallica, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith continue to soldier on while Nirvana and all those grunge bands are nothing but a distant memory…a footnote in the history of rock n roll…You guys think you are so different…but you’re not..you are just like every other music fan…sorry to burst your bubble….oh yeah I almost forgot…Sonic Youth still sucks…

bp | 8/15/2006, 6:48 pm EST

John sounds like one of those dudes
who is jealous he never ‘got it’ when it comes to underground rock…his idea of “cool” probably starts at Metallica and ends at Slayer, and when grunge broke out, he tried to keep up, but never got it, now he’s pissed at those who do…hang in there, John.

JOHN | 8/15/2006, 6:12 pm EST

no zepplin is a great band..sonic youth is a terrible garage band..always have been..i am sick of people giving bands like this praise for being artistic…to make up for the fact they cant play their instruments..they are garbage

Andy | 8/15/2006, 4:54 pm EST

John, You are either a really bad comedian, or a complete moron. Please, check your music cred at the door, and donate your cd collection. You aren’t worthy of either. You talk about Sonic Youth like their Arcade Fire.
I suppose you think Zepplin is overrated, too? *rolls eyes*

JOHN | 8/15/2006, 4:28 pm EST

Sonic Youth blows…always have..I remember Kurt Cobain mentioned them so some people looked into them and realized they suck…The same thing happened when people took a closer look at Nirvana in the late 90’s…

Leslie | 8/15/2006, 1:15 pm EST

Sounds like an amazing gig…
