List of the Day: Best Summer Songs 2006

8/11/06, 2:56 pm EST

red hot chili peppersSo earlier today we were geeking out over the new Decemberists record, and in particular, over the track “Summersong,” which is this perfect, lilting, hazy-beautiful-day of a song. We immediately needed to drive slowly down a country rode in a worn t-shirt on our way to absolutely nowhere. Then we realized that we haven’t decided on the year’s best summer song – we’re almost halfway through August, so we should be able to decide. Here are some of the contenders; let’s have your picks.

  • Gnarls Barkley, “Crazy” [duh]
  • Cherish, “Do It to It”
  • Young Joc, “It’s Going Down”
  • Paris Hilton, “Stars are Blind”
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Dani California”
  • Cassie, “Me and U”
  • Nelly Furtado, “Promiscuous”
  • Chamillionare, “Ridin’”
  • Christina Aguilera, “Ain’t No Other Man”

Paris Hilton? Wow… your credibilty has just been lost.

Dennis O'Bell | 8/11/2006, 3:11 pm EST

What’s to discuss? “Crazy” all the way. Isn’t it obvious? It’s (a) the best song; (b) the most covered song (Raconters, Ray Lamontagne, and um…Nelly Furtado herself); (c) the longest-lasting song — been climbing the charts longer, been in the Top 10 longer.

Seriously, I know you guys are just trying to start a friendly discussion, but there’s really no debate here. Gnarls in a walk.

Kid A | 8/11/2006, 3:19 pm EST

Dani California!

Fortune | 8/11/2006, 4:15 pm EST

Woman by Wolfmother

PinkPick | 8/11/2006, 4:22 pm EST

T.I. “Why You Wanna” I hear it everyday at work and play it in my car and it never gets old.

Evan | 8/11/2006, 4:32 pm EST

So.. I need the new Decemberists record to leak NOW.

Tom | 8/11/2006, 4:45 pm EST

“Crazy” Gnarls Barkley
or
“White Unicorn” Wolfmother

Two great albums of the summer.

Jake | 8/11/2006, 4:56 pm EST

“Ridin’” is one of the worst songs of all time. Period.

Scream | 8/11/2006, 5:14 pm EST

Stars Are Blind? Me and U? The best summer songs? Are you kidding me?

Crazy and Dani California are the only ones there that dont make me gag.

Tom Waits | 8/11/2006, 5:43 pm EST

Who gives a good goddamn! And Paris Hilton? WHAT!? Pitchfork media is so much better, yet I still read this site…

Anonymous | 8/11/2006, 6:18 pm EST

This is just plain sad. Really sad.

Gord | 8/11/2006, 6:21 pm EST

“wolf like me” by tv on the radio.

song of the year.

hands down.

Ronaldo | 8/11/2006, 6:21 pm EST

I feel really sad that Paris Hilton is on this list. Is this Rolling Stone? What a terrible list.

yahya | 8/11/2006, 6:25 pm EST

in that list it was definitly gnarls, the others are just sad, sad attempts at making music. dani california would be up there if it wasnt a rip off of last dance

Dan | 8/11/2006, 6:33 pm EST

full of disappointment…..

G | 8/11/2006, 6:36 pm EST

Knights of Cydonia by Muse – No Contest.

Who | 8/11/2006, 6:51 pm EST

Me and U

Brendan | 8/11/2006, 6:54 pm EST

SexyBack is definitely the summer’s hottest track

drew | 8/11/2006, 6:55 pm EST

Did Tom Waits just post a comment? The real Tom Waits!?!

Kevin | 8/11/2006, 7:00 pm EST

Paris Hilton?…uh…que?…What about The Diary of Jane by Breaking Benjamin? That’s a great song.

I guess my pick would be Dani California.

Flash | 8/11/2006, 7:01 pm EST

I am in New Zealand, where it is Winter and all those songs still suck in this season. You should rename the list; Songs That Suck from Summer 06

Matt | 8/11/2006, 7:05 pm EST

I think there’s a special place in Hell for whoever made this list.

Anonymous | 8/11/2006, 7:21 pm EST

PARIS HILTON IS GOD !

KEN VAIL JR. | 8/11/2006, 7:30 pm EST

BEST SUMMER SONG IS ALL SUMMER LONG BY THE BEACH BOYS…DUH! OR SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER BY THE MOTELS…THOSE ARE SOME GOOD ONES.

anonymous | 8/11/2006, 7:33 pm EST

a public affair

CL | 8/11/2006, 7:37 pm EST

If you’re going to have this list, you’re going to have to have some “Sexyback.”

Anonymous | 8/11/2006, 7:45 pm EST

half those songs suck. smile by lily allen needs to be on there

An industry nobody | 8/11/2006, 7:49 pm EST

Paris Hilton?! Please. If you’re going to give that recording credit, place it squarely on the “I’ll buy anything pop culture tells me to” mentality of the general public.

An industry nobody | 8/11/2006, 8:30 pm EST

I guess you have to keep Paris Hilton in the spotlight. After all, your parent company Wenner Media also owns “Us Weekly” which makes a habit of plastering P.H. photos on its pages.

Hermano | 8/11/2006, 8:37 pm EST

I pick dani california.

But you know what? With competitors like that, is better if we don’t have competition at all!

KingLeer | 8/11/2006, 8:37 pm EST

I’m a bit of a youngster, but as a rock and roll fanatic, I have read some of the great rock journalism from the 60s and 70s by this magazine. But on this day, when I see that it endorses a Paris Hilton song as “one of the best” of anything, I suppose the final nail has just has the hammer lowered upon it.

Leslie | 8/11/2006, 8:38 pm EST

“Smile” by Lily Allen, and “Saving Grace” by Tom Petty are my picks. I agree with “Crazy” as well, but sadly, the other songs you picked are pretty lousy. The RHCP would have been alright except they ripped of Tom Petty. Not cool.
Rolling Stone’s staff should be pretty embarrassed if they really think those are the best songs of the summer.

Athena | 8/11/2006, 8:38 pm EST

I HATE to say this; but I was COMPLETELY unprepared to find that Paris’ single was actually a nice, sexy, exotic summer contender.

But, CRAZY takes the cake. period.

Hawks | 8/11/2006, 9:04 pm EST

I think you guys who are criticizing Rs’s “sad” choice of music are missing thr point. A “summer song,” like a “summer movie,” isn’t meant to be deep or intellectually stimulating. It is a fun, easy to swallow confection, which all of these songs are.

dyermaker420 | 8/11/2006, 9:05 pm EST

Tool’s Vicarious –
Id love to see Hilton sing her crap song live. OH Wait it would sound nothing like the recording, cause she cant sing without computers.

Jrb2b | 8/11/2006, 9:09 pm EST

The best song of the summer…. CHRISTINA AGUILERA “”ANOM”"

nate | 8/11/2006, 9:23 pm EST

the summer belonged to the return of christina agilera- aint no other man, new, fresh, creative, which is what music needs

Nicofrogs | 8/11/2006, 9:37 pm EST

i think that christina rocks in that song.. she actually sings.. soo… i pick Aint no other man…
paris sucks… i mean shes hot but… with her mouth closed

wendy | 8/11/2006, 9:39 pm EST

Ain’t No Other Man! It’s upbeat, creative & musically unlike any other. Christina challenged all the other artist mixing the past, present & the future. All with REAL instruments.

CHRISTINA!!!!!! All the way.

alex | 8/11/2006, 9:40 pm EST

razorlight – in the morning
the automatic- monster
primal scream- country girl
zutons-she moves in her own way
LCD-daft punk is playing at my house
and of course gnarls

Hallie Rose | 8/11/2006, 9:40 pm EST

I just ordered a subscription four hours ago for a year of Rolling Stone and…then I read your list and realized I shouldn’t have.

Saving Grace should have been on there. And I want my $67.00 back.

Hallie Rose | 8/11/2006, 9:43 pm EST

But if it must be one, it’s the Peppers I would pick.

alex | 8/11/2006, 9:49 pm EST

that chili peppers song sucks by the way, sounds exactly like every other chili peppers songs, they stopped being creative about 5 yrs ago

Emma M. | 8/11/2006, 9:50 pm EST

This summer I’ve been listening to a new kind of music; maybe you guys have heard of it. It’s called ROCK.

Tom | 8/11/2006, 10:04 pm EST

Muse- “Knights of Cydonia” its been a long time since anyone came out with anything taht sounds quite like that.

Whateva | 8/11/2006, 10:08 pm EST

Me & U is just plain horrible, and Paris Hilton? Come on! Gnarls Barkley, Chamillionaire, and RHCP are the only songs up there I like. But hands down it’s Gnarls.

Paris Hiltion | 8/11/2006, 10:22 pm EST

I can’t believe you picked my song!! Thank you Rolling Stone. I think back to all the hard work my daddy had to put into his hotel business so that some day he could buy me, not a pony, not a new car, but a record with a “hit” single. I have no soul.

Zack | 8/11/2006, 10:26 pm EST

Where is “Hips Don’t Lie?”

wherezthubeef?? | 8/11/2006, 10:26 pm EST

jaguar’s been using that spoon song “i turn my camera on” in their commercial. as much as i like crazy, spoon kicks barkley butt.

Zahra | 8/11/2006, 10:44 pm EST

I am so ashamed to see Paris Hilton’s song here. I expected more from Rolling stone besides a catchy fluff.

I vote Christina aguilera’s “Ain’t no Other Man” no other song made me question, hate then love more. She really is evolving quite nicely.

J Havoc | 8/11/2006, 10:45 pm EST

My List:
Crazy by Gnarls, of course.

ANOM by Christina Aguilera. Not a fan but I have to admit it’s good.

Eyes Of The Insane by Slayer (favorite metal band)

To The Mountains by Satyricon

C’mon I’m a metalhead! Had to drop a couple of metal songs.

Defender | 8/11/2006, 10:53 pm EST

But of course, Aguilera! ANOM all the way!

kyosti | 8/11/2006, 11:08 pm EST

okay for one thing i cannot believe that paris hilton was on the list. for myself i do recognize some of these names(only pop songs or hip hop) though i have probably heard them. I was wondering shy Raconteurs Steady as she goes was missing and some other key songs such as maybe, yeah that’s all i can think if right now. Good ol’ raconteurs, but please fiz the list or add to it.

Jeff Mangum | 8/11/2006, 11:14 pm EST

“Back Like That” – Ghostface
“We’re from Barcelona” – I’m From Barcelona (cause I define summer with 29 swedes in cardagin sweaters)

And, yeah, “Crazy” obviously, but it leaked last year.

Oh yeah, and the new Streets single is so bad that it’s great for summer.

M | 8/11/2006, 11:17 pm EST

The song of the summer right now has to be “Promiscuous”…Nelly Furtado.

Close second on Christina Aguilera with “Ain’t no other man”

Dave | 8/11/2006, 11:27 pm EST

Crazy is king this summer…followed closely the Raconteurs Steady As She Goes. I’ll say this about “catchy” songs that lack anything else…the ebola virus is catchy too, I still want none of it.

Dude | 8/11/2006, 11:31 pm EST

Wow this year’s music sucks; Paris Hilton has one of the most popular songs of the year and Fergie’s London Bridge is the number 1 single in the country. And the fact that Crazy is considered the runaway best song is disheartening. But the only established rock band on your list’s song is a rip-off of Tom Petty and that is probably just as disheartening.

Andrew Miller | 8/11/2006, 11:44 pm EST

Big ups to Timbaland on the summer song circuit. Fair to say no other two songs have created more buzz than Nelly’s “Promiscuous” and the new Justin Timberlake joint “Sexyback.”

Chris | 8/11/2006, 11:45 pm EST

To even debate this is ridiculous:

CRAZY: Gnarls Barkley

Is there ANY other song that even approaches its addictiveness, its catchiness, or depth of arrangement? Every section is different, the singing is sensational, and the video defies categorization. Its Gnarls not in walk, but centipede crawl.

As for Promiscous, I can’t think of a song more mislabeled as being by the singer, but is in fact the producer’s creation. Any number of other pop stars could have done that.

Oh, and this kills me, but that damn Clash ripoff by Kelly Clarkson is addictive like a pleasant tumor.

nasrul | 8/11/2006, 11:57 pm EST

Definitely Dani California. Who says Chili Peppers aren’t creative. Stadium Arcadium is a brilliant album and it ought to be one of the best rock/pop/funk album.

Carrie M | 8/12/2006, 12:12 am EST

I hate half these songs! Oh my God where has music gone, where’s the rock? How about Pearl Jam’s “life wasted” or anything besides Paris Hilton!

Graham | 8/12/2006, 12:14 am EST

To quote the REAL greatest song of the summer

This is f***ed up. F***ed up.”

All these songs are terrible. Save Crazy, of course, but its not the best on the album.

Black Swan by Thom Yorke

Anonymous | 8/12/2006, 12:15 am EST

this is all nigger music

Jesus | 8/12/2006, 12:26 am EST

Anonymous you moron, I think you will find that maybe 3 of those songs fall under your ingenious category of “nigger music”. The rest sit comfortably in the appalling category.

dan | 8/12/2006, 12:28 am EST

Blah this list is blasphemous. It’s not really the editors fault or w/e, but the fact the music that’s out there today is so bad and cliche. Over half the new rappers w/summer hits aren’t gonna be heard from again. Well at least theres not Hinder or FOBish crap on the list…GO! RHCP and Gnarls cuz their really the most creative out of the bunch.

someone | 8/12/2006, 1:06 am EST

I am so glad that RS had the balls to put Paris Hilton on this list.

Steve C | 8/12/2006, 1:24 am EST

I have to agree with Chris…

There is only one song on any such list of 2006….I will go as far as to say Crazy is THE best song of the year. I mean, it’s made of nothing new, yet so originally imagined. No matter what kind of music you listen to, if you ‘get’ music at all, you cannot argue the wonderfull-ness of this song.

The rest of the album is….interesting…..never quite reaching the height of this second track, but a great experiment none the less.

JD | 8/12/2006, 1:47 am EST

“Crazy” is definitely the song of the year; come grammy time it will pick up awards for song of the year as well as record of the year.

“Dani California” should be considered for record of the year too. So what if they ripped off Tom Petty, who decided not to sue because he isn’t a greedy bastard.

“Promiscuous” is pretty good but “Maneater” is a far superior song for Nelly F.

“Ain’t No Other Man” is the only other song that I’ve heard on the list and this is proof that Xtina has graduated from teen queen status.

Chamillionaire, Yung Joc and the rest are just flavours of the month.

Joe Black | 8/12/2006, 1:56 am EST

I remember when, I remember, I remember when music was art and the music was made by artists. Gnarls Barkley brought me back to that time. Crazy is such a wonderfully creative and sonically lush recording. Lyrically, this is probably the most releavant record on the list. Cee-Lo can really sing too.

amanda | 8/12/2006, 2:31 am EST

Ummmm, I kind of like that Raconteurs song Steady as She Goes?

Mark | 8/12/2006, 2:33 am EST

‘Woman’ by Wolfmother

karl ravage | 8/12/2006, 3:02 am EST

Paris I love you!!!
Rollingstone please keep up the great quality of work!!!

Ryan | 8/12/2006, 3:07 am EST

Summertime. Kenny Chesney. There is no argument.

Art | 8/12/2006, 3:32 am EST

Summer Songs: Nelly Furtado: Promiscous and Christina Aguilera : Ain’t No Other Man!!!
Third goes to Beyonce: Deja Vu

1ggy | 8/12/2006, 4:14 am EST

pearl jam – big wave

john frusciante | 8/12/2006, 4:20 am EST

best song would be an underappreciated song but very good “I know I’m not alone” by Michael Franti. and for the whole stupid dani california tom petty thing, theres more of a similarity from the john frusciante song “fallout” from a couple of years ago, the chili peppers aren’t very original

Bill Foster | 8/12/2006, 4:50 am EST

I like that shout-out to Michael Franti! But, I would pick “yell fire” from the same album for my song … although, how can anyone not like “Crazy.”? That is a just a great song.

Georgie | 8/12/2006, 4:59 am EST

Crazy and Aint No Other Man..

Jordy | 8/12/2006, 5:29 am EST

What’s that coming over the hill?? Is it a MONSTER? Is it a MONSTER??????

Anthony!?!?! | 8/12/2006, 6:55 am EST

Dani California all the way, how can people rave over crazy that song is poor

Dandman | 8/12/2006, 7:04 am EST

Mmmmmmh, interesting to see the picks from an American point of view. From a European aspect…..”crazy” was released here march/april so cant really count that as a song of the summer on this side of the water.

Nelly Furtado – “Maneater” was completely massive!!

Shakira “Hips Dont Lie”

Sandi Thom “Punkrocker”

Razorlight “In The Morning”

The Kooks “She Moves In Her Own Way”

Lily Allen “Smile”

Paul Oakenfold and Brittany Murphy “Faster Kill Pussycat”

A few tunes for ye to look out for in the coming months across the big pond!!!!

D-train | 8/12/2006, 8:14 am EST

“Mojo” by Peeping Tom

Seth | 8/12/2006, 8:24 am EST

What the hell. Stars are Blind?

This is the worst song I’ve heard in my entire life.

zack / cool-xtina.skyblog.com | 8/12/2006, 8:24 am EST

christina wrtie the best song of this summer her record will be the best ;) )

Emerson | 8/12/2006, 8:34 am EST

Here in brazil and all arround the world Ain’t no other man by Lady Aguilera is the best summer song!

PunkkyG | 8/12/2006, 9:30 am EST

The best summer song of this year has got to be “Dani California”, hands down.

brian | 8/12/2006, 10:07 am EST

how could you possibly include Paris Hilton on this list. the song’s beat is awful, and she has no voice.

anybody can sound half decent w/ as much production and synthesizers were used on her voice

JC | 8/12/2006, 10:37 am EST

What should have been the real list:
“When You Were Young” The Killers
“Crazy” Gnarls Barkley
“Where’d You Go” Fort Minor
“Original Fire” Audioslave
“Miss Murder” AFI

youknowit | 8/12/2006, 10:39 am EST

summer song doesnt mean best song. by ANY means, it almost means WORST song! its just the most catchy and fluffy so in that sense, paris hilton can have her name on the list, the damn song is catchy. the list isnt “best songs made this summer” its, whats the best SUMMER song. poppy, sugary, and danceable with not much depth= summer song. its not a GOOD thing to be on this list so why is everyone spewing off their favourite bands lol

Darth Pop-Tart | 8/12/2006, 10:56 am EST

life wasted-pearl jam

cam | 8/12/2006, 11:18 am EST

dani california no question……paris hilton shouldnt even be on the list

kopite bob | 8/12/2006, 11:33 am EST

‘naive’ by the kooks

kopite bob | 8/12/2006, 11:37 am EST

naive-the kooks

crystal ball-keane

James W. | 8/12/2006, 11:44 am EST

Definitely Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous.” It’s the longest running #1 hit of the year and a great summer jam.

D.EDGE | 8/12/2006, 12:03 pm EST

10 years from now when we look back at the summer of 2006, is anyone going to say: wow that Paris Hilton song (because nobody will remember the name of the song) brings back memories. — Crazy and Dani California will be the most memorable songs of summer 2006.

Armen | 8/12/2006, 12:25 pm EST

Almost everyone on that list will be overlooked in future years except for one, two maybe if you push it. Those are by far Christina Aguilera and in a far behind second Gnarls Barkley. Ain’t No Other Man, regardless of its failure to hit number one on Billboard is by far the best song of the summer of 2006. The rest are plastics.

Dwayne W. | 8/12/2006, 12:41 pm EST

I have to admit that even if Paris Hylton’s “Stars Are Blind” song was any good, I still wouldn’t have liked it. I just can’t get past the fact that it’s PARIS HYLTON!! UGH!! Not to mention Jessica Simpson’s “A Public Affair” is even worse!

As far as a summer songs go though, I would have to pick
Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous” as the leading contender followed by Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”, Rihanna’s “Unfaithful”,
Cassie’s “Me and U” and
Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man” (she has really evolved and I can’t wait for her new album to drop next week!)

Runners up-
Justin Timberlake’s “Sexyback” (this track has an awful name, but damn sexy texture!)
Beyonce’s “Deja Vu” (I will admit, this song isn’t even half as good as “Crazy in Love” or even “Check On It”, but the more you listen it, the more you like it! Plus it’s a great song to sing and dance to in the car on the way to a club or party!),
Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ “Dani California”,
T.I. “Why You Wanna” (it really has that summer sound)and
Yung Joc’s “It’s Goin Down”.

As i’ve mentioned before in other blogs, I don’t get Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”. Rolling Stone, you’ve lost some serious cred w/the whole Paris Hylton thing! Damn, man!

Nice | 8/12/2006, 12:51 pm EST

The Best Summer songs are definetly Dani California it’s very uplifting and Rocks!!
And Sean Paul’s Temperature, has an excellent rythm, great to dance …what more can we say Sean Paul know’s how to make great club bangers, joints that are good to shake the ass
The Worst summer songs Christina’s Ain’t no other man, she has to realise that we are on 2006,enough with charlston dance
And of course Stars are blind of Paris hilton, this i will not even comment

pedro alves | 8/12/2006, 12:58 pm EST

best summer song for me Harrowdown Hill by Thom Yorke

SpaiN | 8/12/2006, 1:16 pm EST

of course Ain’t No Other Man…baby jane rocks she’s the best singer n this is a fabulous song

juuuuuuan | 8/12/2006, 1:34 pm EST

i love christina… she’s crazy hot! but gnarls barkley is cool too! i can’t decide!

ben | 8/12/2006, 1:37 pm EST

in the uk, “young folks” by peter, bjorn and john is an amazing track, like beck’s poppiest moments. definitely got more of a summer vibe to it most of this list.

Monster | 8/12/2006, 2:08 pm EST

why the hell is paris hilton on the list? jesus christ that ho needs to die

B.B.B. | 8/12/2006, 2:22 pm EST

AFI – Miss Murder

RHCP – Dani California

Gnarls Barkley – Crazy

tonkateddybear | 8/12/2006, 2:23 pm EST

for the love of all things sacred to music, why is paris hilton even mentioned in rolling stone? the joke is over, yeah, we got the point. just because your a trollop with money doesn’t mean you have talent!

best song of the summer…
hot girls in good moods- butch walker and the let’s go out tonight’s

matt | 8/12/2006, 2:56 pm EST

dizzle dizzle | 8/12/2006, 3:10 pm EST

london bridge – fergie

DFH | 8/12/2006, 3:27 pm EST

“Dance Like a Monkey” by the New York Dolls. REAL rock and roll.

cell phone’s dead by beck is the song of the year, and it did appear briefly, this summer. does that count?

Andres | 8/12/2006, 4:01 pm EST

I Can’t understand why “Hips Don’t Lie” there isn’t on the list!… This is the song of the year!!… Anyway… The Red Hot Chili Peppers are good!!

Bob | 8/12/2006, 4:12 pm EST

Where the hell is Pussycat Dolls “Buttons”????

To even pretend like it doesnt bring out your inner ho is ridiculous. Sexy, cheesy, slutty: Song of the year!

shayla | 8/12/2006, 4:18 pm EST

Matt | 8/12/2006, 5:09 pm EST

Stupidity…it’s alive and well.

Ernesto | 8/12/2006, 5:44 pm EST

the single fat that you put that bimbo that´s hot saying Hilton girl SPEAKS VOLUMES about how little credibility ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE has now musically. So disappointed!!!!!!

dave | 8/12/2006, 5:48 pm EST

if peter travers didn’t work for you, i’d stop reading your silly magazine for your obessions with paris hilton and other terrible human beings that i will refrain from calling artists. there was a time when rolling stone was known for being somewhat counter culture and revolutionary in the ways of music. now you just latch onto whatever the hell every other media outlet is saying is good and find some critic on your staff who can (amazingly) think of some good things to say about it. I mean come on. Why the hell is paris hilton on this list. why the hell is christina augilara on the cover? put some real rock and roll artists on the cover. long dead are the days when rolling stone informed me of something about music. you need to knock it off!

Dames | 8/12/2006, 5:53 pm EST

Um… it’s rolling stone okay they have no credibility that is the truth if you go multi-platinum your gonna be on the cover and have your album in the year’s top twenty there no way around that and they picked those songs since those are the ones you hear on the radio over 30-40 times a day i bet the people who work there probably listen to old tom petty and beatles except for when they review records listen to it once and base the rating on how much interscope or universal paid them please people come on the only one with a little credibility is peter travers cuz he actually does his job which is review films and give them the rating they deserve serious read the bloody magazine

Everton | 8/12/2006, 6:01 pm EST

Crazy – Gnarls Barkley

Ghetto Story – Cham

Marsea | 8/12/2006, 6:05 pm EST

Honestly, that Paris Hilton song may not be good, but it certainly has been played a lot, especially in Europe where I have spent a good portion of my summer, so it IS a summer song.
However, my songs of the summer have been
1. Pussycat Dolls: Buttons
2. Shakira: Hips Don’t Lie
3. Christina Aguilera: Ain’t no Other Man
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers: Dani California
5. Gnarls Barkley: Crazy
6. Panic! At The Disco: I Write Sins not Tragedies
7. Nelly Furtado: Promiscuous and Maneater
8. Fergie: London Bridge
9. I have to put her here cause I have heard the damn song SO MUCH: Paris Hilton: Stars are Blind
10. Kelly Clarkson: Walk Away

LyricalDrug | 8/12/2006, 6:09 pm EST

First, go learn how to spell “road” before you try and pass this crap off as good music.

ernesto | 8/12/2006, 6:10 pm EST

all you sadistic jaded morons need to stop bashing music that people love just because you consider rock music to be the only credible music…get over the ego trip!!!

Christrina Aguiler has the best goddamn voice, and the song tickles my fancy

Sim | 8/12/2006, 6:36 pm EST

And The Pussycat Dolls ???…???

Carmen | 8/12/2006, 6:39 pm EST

My list would be
1- Promiscous-Nelly Furtado
2-CrAZy -Gnarls Barkley
3-Buttons- Pcd
4-Do It to It-Cherish
5- London Bridge-Fergie

Cogs | 8/12/2006, 6:43 pm EST

Charmillionare is just a good for nothin nigger complaining about police trying to do their job, perhaps he should stop trying to sell drugs to our kids and spend his money on improving the lives of his fellow “Ghetto” members instead of driving around in his expensive cars that must cost so much to run because fuel is so expensive.

Paris Hilton is a corporate monster. period, and shame on RS for succumbing to it,

Craig | 8/12/2006, 6:56 pm EST

i fully agree with matt

you want the best songs of the summer?

-new york minute – butch walker
-hot girls in good moods – butch walker
-ladies and gentlement…the lets go out tonites – butch walker
- bethamphetamine (pretty pretty) – butch walker
- too famous to get fully dressed – butch walker
- we’re all going down – butch walker
- dominoes – butch walker
- paid to get excited – butch walker
- a song without a chorus – butch walker
- the taste of red – butch walker
- rich people die unhappy – butch walker
- this is the sweetest little song – butch walker
- when canyons ruled the city – butch walker

seriously

when did rolling stone stop appreciating real music?

idiots

Romel | 8/12/2006, 6:59 pm EST

Athough the Review RS posed for her CD was total BS; Aint No Other Man (although I didnt like it at first) did grow on me and has become the song I cant stop listening to. Amazing.

Anita Bonita | 8/12/2006, 7:46 pm EST

Yuck, I can’t say I like even half of those songs!

*Sigh,* of those I guess the best would be:
-RHCP, “Dani California”
-Christina Aguilera, “Ain’t No Other Man”

I think rock might be dying…they just easy-listening-ified my favorite rock station last month. And this list PROVES rock’s dying. The world is a sad, sad place. For shame, RS!!

Rich | 8/12/2006, 7:53 pm EST

“..Rock dying?” Ha! Ha! It’s just underground where it belongs!

MissMetal | 8/12/2006, 8:11 pm EST

Rock can’t ever die. People have been say this for years. theres always been some kind of significant revolution in music, and we could be on the brink of one. At least there are great bands like The New York Dolls, Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam still making great music.

Thus, from the list above, I would have to say “Dani Californi”. Great song, it’s uplifting, and catchy, has an awesome guitar hook, and just rocks in a very mellow way.

raydawg | 8/12/2006, 8:14 pm EST

Paris Hilton????? youv’e got to be kidding me.

Stars are Blind? More like Rolling stone editors are deaf.

Kent | 8/12/2006, 8:15 pm EST

Why are all these songs the same video’s they play on VH1, MTV and MTV2. Are there no other summer anthems from anybody else?

Music is dying. The internet has made illegal downloading suck the life out of all musical artists from making a living. A&Rs are not going to be looking for the next big thing anymore because there is no money in it. The only bands making any money these days are those that have been around for a while because they have a loyal following who will actually spend some money and go out and buy thier music. No new artist make anything. That means we have to listen to disposible music like Paris Hilton, Chamillionare, Christina Agulera & Nelly Furtado.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – They actually care about thier fans. They relesed a double album that has 28 songs on it for the price of 1 CD. All of those songs are good. Soundtrack of the summer and Album of the year!

Wes | 8/12/2006, 8:18 pm EST

Truly, most if not all of these songs are not really very good. “Crazy” is a good song, and “Dani California” is okay, but, man, all of the other stuff is crap. Actually, 3/4 of what’s on the radio is crap. I don’t buy a lot of music that’s on MTV mainly for the reason that it’s not good. And I have to say I’m extemely disappointed in this list. For Christ sake, Thom Yorke just came out with a fanastic album. And now as I look down the list of what other people have said, I’m even more bewildered as to what makes Christina Aguilera “good”. I’ll admit she has a great voice, but whoever is writing this candy coated pop trash is only doing it for the money and not for art/expression. That’s what’s wrong with the goddamn record industry these days. And now I’m starting to go off on a rant. My apologies to anyone who wants to kill me now.

Zenidog | 8/12/2006, 8:28 pm EST

gnarls barkley appeals to fans across all fields, but the other songs do not. therefore, CRAZY is the song of the suummer.

Jean Bean | 8/12/2006, 8:33 pm EST

Totally not into stars goes blind..

David | 8/12/2006, 8:33 pm EST

1. Christina Aguilera “Ain’t No Other Man”
2. Gnarles Barkley, “Crazy”

and I LOVE Yung Joc’s song!

But anyway, Christina gets my vote…
Killer pipes/Killer Beats = Killer track.

Love4Flea | 8/12/2006, 8:37 pm EST

“Dani California” is definitely the best song of the summer. Stadium Arcadium is one of the best albums of year. The Chili Peppers ARE the best!!

What the F%$# ! | 8/12/2006, 8:42 pm EST

All of these songs suck! Well, except “Crazy” and “Dani California”, and that’s it. What the hell is up with the music these days?!?

JD | 8/12/2006, 8:50 pm EST

“Ain’t No Other Man” – by miles.

Aguilera drives me crazy – I hated her earlier crap – but when I heard this my head near spun. She straight up killed it.

BirdyB | 8/12/2006, 8:59 pm EST

Can someone tell me why Paris Hilton is on this list? RS…what the hell ru smoking??

Dazed | 8/12/2006, 9:02 pm EST

I love RHCP, but without a doubt, “Crazy” is the summer anthem.

James | 8/12/2006, 9:07 pm EST

I didn’t really hear a lot of interesting music this summer cause I just never had the radio on. Unfortunately I was over exposed to most of the songs on RS’s list (I never did hear Hilton’s song thank god!). However, my rock out song of the summer is Life Wasted by Pearl Jam. You put that on to either start the day on an ass-kicking note or to unwind and it just floors you! I saw someone mention Big Wave, which was also great for the summer.
Hmmm, where there any hits? I didn’t even like Crazy that much (probably heard it too much). I actually dont’ mind Christina Aguilar’s song all that much… at the moment. Dani Californi was pretty upbeat and good as well. Last summer was so much better for great rock music. Oh! Just about anything off of Corrine Baily Rae’s debut album. Damn that girl should be way more popular than friggin Hilton… oh wait, she’s genuinely talanted, so she barely gets covered.

djmusicK | 8/12/2006, 9:17 pm EST

Other than the RHCP and Gnarls Barkley (DJ Danger Mouse is a major talent), the rest of these songs ,as well as what is pushed by MTV, are by artists who should not even have 15 seconds of fame.

Agreed. PJ’s Life Wasted is the best song of the summer and maybe the year, but Mars Volta’s new song Viscera Eyes (the full album version) is amazing.

Dead Head | 8/12/2006, 9:18 pm EST

This has been such a bad year 4 rock. “Dani California” is a pretty good rock song 4 the summer(much better than all the emo crap that’s been out lately), but Pearl Jam’s “Life Wasted” should be on this list.

Ricky | 8/12/2006, 9:22 pm EST

“Crazy,” without a doubt.

“Dani California” and “Life Wasted” are right up there as well.

Jahed | 8/12/2006, 9:50 pm EST

Ok “Crazy” is really over played. And most of these songs r annoying and pointless. But from this list, I would have to pick “Dani California”(the only song that I can really stand by this point)

Jane | 8/12/2006, 9:56 pm EST

Christina Aguilera, “Ain’t No Other Man”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

austin | 8/12/2006, 10:18 pm EST

jack johnson – talk of the town

Aaron | 8/12/2006, 10:20 pm EST

Unfortunately it is the middle of winter in Australia so it is hard to get a summer vibe. If it was summer I’d have to say Sweet Talk by Spank Rock (off YoYoYoYoYoYo!) is one sweet tune. As far as Guitar music goes Built to Spill’s Conventional Wisdom off You in Reverse has a great vibe.

Ding Ding | 8/12/2006, 10:24 pm EST

What the heck is supposed to be so “great” about this Aguilera song?? “Life Wasted” is where it’s at.

lostnfound | 8/12/2006, 10:50 pm EST

AIN’T NO OTHER MAN by Christina Aguilera

Adam | 8/12/2006, 10:50 pm EST

Christina’s “Ain’t No Other Man” is definitely my pick

rsblows | 8/12/2006, 10:59 pm EST

I would go with multiple tracks off the impecable avacado album by pearl jam… worldwide suicide, parachutes, come back, and inside job just to name a few. But if you wanna get rollingstone on it I would say sexyback is pretty decent. I wish rollingstone would just be a bit more credible.

Pirate | 8/12/2006, 11:04 pm EST

“Dani California” is the song out of this list. It is the summer rock anthem!!

Andy | 8/12/2006, 11:56 pm EST

Of course Paris is the joke of the list but Heres my list for Top 5 Summer Songs:
1.”Walk Away”-Kelly Clarkson
2.”Crazy”-Gnarls Barkley
3.”I Write Sins”-Panic At The Disco
4.”Aint No Other Man”-C.Augilera
5.”Over My Head”-The Fray

yankee hotel foxtrot | 8/13/2006, 12:18 am EST

Gnrarls Barkley has to be the song of the summer mainly because the song reaches such a wide audience : any top 40 radio listener all the way down to any snob indie kid. Not to mention it has much more depth and substance than any other song that was mentioned. ‘Crazy’ is a kind of pop song that comes around once every few years and the last song was maybe ‘Hey Ya’.

Miguel G | 8/13/2006, 12:32 am EST

Of course it’s CRAZY and christina aguilera what a voice!!!

rodgnzlz | 8/13/2006, 12:35 am EST

christina is great, aint no other man is this summer best

Purplehaze18 | 8/13/2006, 12:40 am EST

wow, this is why i never come here, so many songs that are so much better arent even mentioned, first off, rhcp did NOT write DC its a tom petty song called mary janes last dance, dmb has some pretty sick jams they have been working on that kick the crap out of most of those, damien rice has a few new tunes that put those to shame, and Ani Difranco just put out an album that should have at least three on that list, I cant even begin to think why some of those names are on that list.

alternative kid | 8/13/2006, 12:54 am EST

why can’t old songs be the song of the summer my choice is simple zero by the smashing pumpkins timeless music no one writes like those greats from the 90’s corgan cobain rezner etc screw new music paris hilton what a joke creation from a music label joke

brazilian-sensation-xoxo | 8/13/2006, 12:58 am EST

umm im gunna have tuh go with aint no other man…i dont realli like cristina but its one sweet song… i do like dani california nd crazy but i hear it all the time…. but the mos annoying song is ridin by chamillionaire its way too over played..ya at first i liked it but after like the 6th time it got realli annoying…i think i’ll stick to good old rolling stones nd KISS and all those other great rock bands for the rest of the summer…but cristina!! great voice shes got..

thts all for now…

A song that should be contender for summer song is “you only live once” by the strokes. Beat anything else out there right now, although “crazy” is real good too

npat | 8/13/2006, 1:14 am EST

all of you who say that rs has lost credibility for putting Paris Hilton or whoever other than a rock artist on this list, get off your high horse and shut up. The best summer song has to appeal to everyone, and implies that it was the most popular…all of these songs fit. No one is going to remember some obscure rock or indie song 10 years from now if they have never heard it. I hate that I’m defending Paris Hilton, but she deserves to be on this list, as do all of the others.

npat | 8/13/2006, 1:17 am EST

All of you who are saying that RS has lost credibility for placing Paris Hilton or whoever other than a rock artist on this list, get off your high horse and shut the hell up. The best summer song needs to be popular and appeal to most people in the country, somthing that all of these songs have in common. No one is going to remember some obscure rock or indie song 10 years from now if they have never heard it. I hate that I am defending Paris Hilton, but she deserves to be on this list, as do all the others.

mr. roboto | 8/13/2006, 1:21 am EST

“Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira.

The summer was good to me.

a close second is “Radio Ga Ga” by Electric Six.

tommy t | 8/13/2006, 1:28 am EST

Went to see the Strokes on monday night. Talented group by all means; thoroughly enjoyed the show.

I remember taking the willy out of genie but DAMN!, Aint no other choice! What a classy song. No James Brown but I bet she don’t beat her boyfriends. Christina for sure.

Leslie | 8/13/2006, 2:02 am EST

Yeah, there really hasn’t been that many great singles this summer, in my opinion.

Ryan | 8/13/2006, 2:51 am EST

This summer sucked.

Crazy was the only good single.

Well, Dani California’s good, but there are better songs on their album.

Jeff | 8/13/2006, 2:54 am EST

radio play suggests its ‘Promiscuous’… ‘Crazy’ might be the global summer hit though.

cjones | 8/13/2006, 4:21 am EST

first of all, i’m so fuggin’ jealous you guys have your hands on the new decemberists. bastards.
my vote, if anyone ever tallies these things up is ‘crazy’ by gnarls barkley. i don’t know what everyone is saying about xtina’s voice, it’s what ruins that kick ass loop and tom petty had good reason to want to sue the chili peppers for ‘dani california’. just listen to the opening riff it’s note for note with slightly different production.
also, i haven’t heard the paris hilton song and nor do i want to. maybe whe was listening to it when her pet raccoon or whatever it is bit her.

cjones | 8/13/2006, 4:22 am EST

sorry, maybe she was listening to it…

Matt | 8/13/2006, 4:43 am EST

2 to 1 says that the folks at Rolling Stone don’t even know where The Decemberists get there name from.

CCfan | 8/13/2006, 9:49 am EST

Original Fire, by Audislave.

Mike | 8/13/2006, 10:53 am EST

Well this is for BEST summer song not most popular…but RS picks Paris Hilton..wow.

I would say in no particular order:

Pearl Jam-Parachutes

The Strokes- You Only Live Once/Heart in a Cage

RHCP-Dani California

Wolfmother-Woman

PJ Sparks | 8/13/2006, 11:40 am EST

How about G.Love’s “Ain’t That Right” off his new record? Pearl Jam’s “Life Wasted” almost seems like the song to play as you first hit an open country road or oceanside road where you can just speed off.
And if you ask me, the best summer song ever – “Theme from ‘The Endless Summer’” by the Sandals. Every summer morning should start with that song.

Randall | 8/13/2006, 11:42 am EST

are you kidding me? where the hell is Pharrell and Kanye West’s “NUMBER 1″ on than list?

RandallA | 8/13/2006, 11:47 am EST

while every stupid person that paid money for the paris hilton “song” will look back and say, “what the hell was i thinking?”

yeah

id rather remember indie rock

Ask My Weiner | 8/13/2006, 1:36 pm EST

Wow, obviously you X-tina people don’t know real music when you hear it. Why the hell isn’t The New York Dolls and Pearl Jam on this list? Who ever made this list should be fired for lack of good f***ing musical knowledge, WTF I thought this was RS. I give you props for “Dani California”, and that’s about it.

“Dance Like a Monkey”, “Life Wasted” and “Dani California” are the best songs of the summer. There’s no question. X-tina is like every other pop “artist” out there who only cares about making money and being on magazine covers, rather than creating GOOD music. And “Crazy” is over played to the 10th degree.

dan. | 8/13/2006, 1:42 pm EST

Paris Hilton? So, just looking for shock factor, eh?

Rob | 8/13/2006, 1:44 pm EST

“Crazy” and “Dani California” appeals to a lot of different people. I don’t even like rock but I like that RHCP song, and I don’t even know what Gnarls Barkley is.

Jon | 8/13/2006, 2:19 pm EST

Definitely Nelly Furtado. That song is off the chain!

And don’t hate on Paris, the vocals might be weak but it’s a nice summer jam.

LyricalDrug | 8/13/2006, 3:36 pm EST

Hey RS – please learn how to spell before you try and write. It’s “road,” not “rode”? Who does your editing? Weak!

that_dariachick | 8/13/2006, 3:43 pm EST

Hey, Weiner, you wanna talk about artist who want to make money and not giving a crap about making good music? You left Paris Hilton off your rant. Now, SHE is the one who cares about magazine covers and making money. At least Christina writes her own music.
She got away from the teenybop business years ago.

As for my list, love, love, love Dani California and Crazy.

musikfanatic | 8/13/2006, 3:48 pm EST

Ain’t no other song like “Ain’t No Other Man” by Christina Aguilera.

ChaosBleeds | 8/13/2006, 4:53 pm EST

Christina Aguilera – Aint No Other Man

Zarko | 8/13/2006, 7:17 pm EST

the only song on your list that doesnt suck is Dani California

best
RHCP – Dani California
Petty- Saving Grace
Wolfmother – Woman
Three Days Grace – Animal I Have Become
Black Stone Cherry – Lonely Train

Austin | 8/13/2006, 7:21 pm EST

Christina Aguilera & Paris Hilton are tied for me. But those two definitely have the best summer song.

Hey! | 8/13/2006, 10:50 pm EST

Ain’t No Other Man is Somg Of The Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

wtfmate | 8/13/2006, 11:01 pm EST

I’ll agree with t-train.

kudos to you, naming a band that can actually play instruments that HASN’T copped success off of Tom Petty.

mgfunk | 8/13/2006, 11:04 pm EST

i can’t stand how rolling stone pretends to be elitist with their music preferences and consistently name drop “hipster” bands like pavement or screaming trees and then still pander to the pop-music crowd with horrible “artists” no integrity, all superficial.

k-girlie | 8/13/2006, 11:37 pm EST

in all fairness to the hilton song, it’s a pretty cool jam for summer. i do hate the singer, but you don’t throw something good out just coz it’s a little busted(what the f–, i think i just quoted something from “seabiscuit”, or some horse film).

But I’m gonna go with Crazy.

kevin | 8/14/2006, 12:14 am EST

“Steady as She Goes” Raconteurs and “Woman” Wolfmother

LONG LIVE ROCK!

hdog | 8/14/2006, 12:21 am EST

My vote goes to christina “aint no other man”. she has truly evolved as an artist..awesome production on this song and she has never sounded better..she nailed it

Chuck | 8/14/2006, 1:05 am EST

“Crazy” is an amazing song, and of the ones mentioned, I’d go with that even though, alas, I have been overdosed of it’s goodness. Leave it to corporate America to overplay the only good songs on radio. “Dani” is good too, but there are much better ones off the album. I’m gonna have to give my final choice to the Strokes “You Only Live Once”… one of the best they’ve ever done.

Paris Hilton | 8/14/2006, 1:25 am EST

Hi there fans, i love reading these comments about me that your leaving, it makes me feel like happy again,
and my new porno is out, so go buy it.

Tina | 8/14/2006, 3:13 am EST

The best summer song has got to go to my girlfriend Christina Aguilera with “Ain’t No Other Man” because her fans have been waiting for so long and now it is time. Plus her new sound is really great…

brado | 8/14/2006, 3:14 am EST

The best song of the summer is…um, none there wasnt really a song that captured the feel of summer, so i vote for nothing. Which, incidentally, has more merit than most of the “songs of the summer” not to jump on the pretentious band wagon or anything, but it just has really comfotable seats and the leg room! dont get me started, dont even get me started!

ricky | 8/14/2006, 3:14 am EST

Nelly Furtado, Promiscuous!
A catchy song with that sick Timbaland beat, best song of the summer hands down! Go Nelly!

Jp | 8/14/2006, 4:05 am EST

Aint no Other man is the song of the summer and of the year!!!

zakk from sd | 8/14/2006, 4:41 am EST

whatever’s going to be on the new yo la tengo, nothing says summer like yo la tengo. well pavement, but that’s not happening.

dian nugroho | 8/14/2006, 4:51 am EST

My vote goes to christina “aint no other man”
best song 4 summer and for thezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze year

cjones | 8/14/2006, 5:09 am EST

oh, i must mention ‘laugh, love and liquor’ by the coup.

richardjamesuk | 8/14/2006, 5:42 am EST

Crazy “Well number one in england for nine weeks and still is a great song” Dani California, Ain’t No Other Man, the others nah your having a laugh! To be honest you didn’t put many interesting summer songs! Hips Don’t Lie by Shakira (if any summer song i have heard this is most definately one!) Paris Hilton (song is ummery but not really in a competetion with Gnarls Barkley or Chilli Peppers is it? that is a bloody joke! Come on! But not a decent hip-hop song in here should be “Back Like That” by Ghostface Killah!

I’m out! Glad you didn;t put Fergie’s,Beyonce’s, Justin Timberlake new songs as their soem of the most incredible weak material i have heard in years!

Jeff | 8/14/2006, 5:56 am EST

looks pretty obvious that Christina’s LiveDaily-bots have invaded this forum. ANOM didn’t even make top 5 in spins and is already dropping.

Dazed & Confused | 8/14/2006, 8:57 am EST

WTF??? ….boy are you guys slippin’…Paris Hilton as a best summer song candidate…what dross you’ve picked…Rollingstone has gone all wimpy & schlocky….since when did you judge music based on “fat lashes & big botoxed lips n’ phoney boobs”….as I said…WTF????

Tun | 8/14/2006, 9:11 am EST

Christina Aguilera ’s “Ain’t no other man” is the best out there & song of the year!!!

seeker | 8/14/2006, 9:26 am EST

I didn’t even know Paris Hilton had a song out! I just hope that when I’m out driving around, I pull up next to one of you pricks listening to Paris’ song so I can laugh in your face and smash your radio!

Gabi Hoopasteak | 8/14/2006, 9:36 am EST

Go-go’s “We’ve got the beat.”

These polls are awesome!!!

Cento | 8/14/2006, 9:45 am EST

“Kiedis Speedo Sunset” by The Then Ones

D | 8/14/2006, 9:53 am EST

Joel Plaskett’s “Nowhere With You” is perhaps the most infectious song of this, or any summer. It may be a bit difficult to find for those of you south of the border, but Joel has a huge following in Canada.

Chris Reid | 8/14/2006, 10:07 am EST

Aint no other man of course hands down, Paris is the dumbest itch in the world take off auto tune please.

Sanna | 8/14/2006, 10:39 am EST

Van Morisson – Brown eyed girl

Matthew S | 8/14/2006, 12:03 pm EST

One of the new British Indie Darlings The Kooks song She Moves In Her Own Way is this Summers song, it ticks all the correct boxes, catchy tune, sing-a-longable chorus, cheerful sounding and most importantly it’s just blimin’ great. In Fact most of there singles are great summer tunes.

wags | 8/14/2006, 12:36 pm EST

Long shot but can we get a hell yeah from a 29 piece band.

We’re From Barcelona – I’m From Barcelona

Get It Right | 8/14/2006, 1:18 pm EST

My summer pick is definitely “Dani California”. The Chili Peppers are the best!! And as for the people who say they ripped of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” , that’s complete BS.

Yeah so the opening parts of both songs have similar, but they’re pretty standard grooves. plus there are alot of songs that sond similar, doesn’t mean someone’s copying from someone else.

Jayfra | 8/14/2006, 1:24 pm EST

I’m not sure of the criteria. is it best summer song or just best song played this summer. Anyway for the later, Crazy and Promiscuous get my vote.

sam | 8/14/2006, 1:31 pm EST

“Crazy” is easily song of the summer because of its braod appeal and the fact that it could play ll day long on the radio and i wouldn’t care

my song of the summer is “Mystikal” by Deviants of Reality.

go to http://www.myspace.com/deviantsofreal ity
and tell me that isnt at least one of the top 5 summer songs this year.

but i think you guys are forgetting “Kick, Push” by Lupe Fiasco, “Build Me Up” by Rhymefest, “Work It Out” by Jurassic 5 & Dave Matthews Band, “Lord Give Me A Sign” by DMX, “Number 1″ by Pharrell & Kanye West, and “Margarita” by Sleepy Brown featuring Big Bio & Pharrell.

Those are my summer songs, and “Ain’t No Other Man” is good, but it doesnt stand a chance at song of the year competing against “Crazy” and whatever Kanye West chooses to release as the singles from his upcoming album Graduation, to be released on October 17th.

also NEW BEASTIE BOYS ALBUM OUT BY THE END OF 2007!!

Bruno | 8/14/2006, 2:26 pm EST

Well “Aint No Other Man” has a really good video as well. It could be the song of the summer. I am digging SexyBack, but that is mainly due to Timbaland’s production. I recently heard Christina’s entire CD and I don’t think ANYONE is messing with Christina vocally. Great album. Without You and On Our Way are 2 great songs.

Bruno | 8/14/2006, 2:28 pm EST

And Me & U is everywhere. Too bad the catchy song is not sung by someone with talent. It’s a shame really, cause either you sing great or can dance very well. And Cassie has neither. Her live performances on TRL and 106 and Park have made me grow to despise the song.

And instead of Paris and her stupid Gwen Stefani meets Blondie rip off act, what about the PCD with Snoop Dogg “Buttons”? That song is everywhere, and the video makes me take notice whenever I see it.

Houston | 8/14/2006, 2:36 pm EST

Although it is not their best album I would have to first throw in

The Strokes-You Only Live Once. Probably their best single so far.

Next I would go Raconteurs-Steady as She Goes.

Pearl Jam- Parachutes

The Kooks-She moves in her own way

RHCP- Dani California

RCA of the band STD | 8/14/2006, 2:41 pm EST

Papa Gorgio | 8/14/2006, 3:25 pm EST

No question,

Christina Aguilera “Aint No Other Man”..and I’m not even a fan of hers!

Garrett | 8/14/2006, 3:33 pm EST

Christina Aguilera, “Ain’t No Other Man”

Gnarls Barkley – “Crazy”

I’d also like to add one to the list: Pink’s “Who Knew”. For some reason, America hasn’t really taken to Pink’s amazing music, so many people probably haven’t even heard this single It’s amazing, though!

And I have to add to the comments concerning Paris Hilton…are you KIDDING? Rolling Stone is certainly not devoid of critique misteps, but WHOA. I’d put Ashlee Simpson above Paris, just because of the fact that she has a soul (if no talent).

Kevin | 8/14/2006, 3:50 pm EST

First off…
Ain’t No Other Man SUCKS…I am not sure what you people are thinking. Christina was NOT raised in the 1920’s like she would like you think, she was not influenced by that era of music, she’s just trying to be artistic, and she sucks at doing so. Speaking of artists releasing sh!t, Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous” rips off Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” success with that cheerleader anthem chanting. I am sick of that crap, you people have a record deal because you can sing, not chant. Use your damn voice.

The best songs of the summer are:
1. I Write Sins Not Tragedies – Panic! at the Disco
2. Hips Don’t Lie – Shakira
3. Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
4. Buttons – Pussycat Dolls
5. SexyBack – Justin Timberlake

Worse songs of the summer:
1. Ain’t No Other Man – Christina Aguilera
2. Promiscuous – Nelly Furtado (simply b/c she’s a sell out)
3. Stars are Blind – Paris Hilton
4. Where’d You Go – Fort Minor
5. Public Affair – Jessica Simpson … sounds like she is saying camels coming out for a public affair

Hank Snow | 8/14/2006, 4:01 pm EST

I thought Tool’s – 10k days made for some great summer listening.

Jake Burns | 8/14/2006, 4:08 pm EST

Emily Kane by ART BRUT!

Craig L. | 8/14/2006, 4:24 pm EST

Crazy is the song of the summer because it is the biggest hit and i don’t know a person who doesn’t like that song.

Dani California despite the Tom Petty thing.

Stadium Arcadium is the album of the summer.

Jimmy D | 8/14/2006, 4:27 pm EST

I’m a club DJ and the songs that have been requested the most have been “Promiscuous” and “Hips Don’t Lie”. I can’t go a night without playing each of them at least once.

I prefer “Crazy” but it’s never caught on in my club.

And while I hate to admit it, I like Christina’s and Paris’ songs. But they haven’t caught on yet either.

Andrea | 8/14/2006, 4:58 pm EST

My favourite summer songs are:

Audioslave-Original Fire
Tool-Vicarious
System of a Down-B.Y.O.B. I was able to see them on the Ozzfest tour twice. It was one of the highlights of my summer.

MSUSpartie | 8/14/2006, 5:10 pm EST

“Crazy” HANDS DOWN is the best song of the summer, and one of a very few that don’t suck complete ass. It’s a damn shame that this is even a controversy.

MMmmarr! | 8/14/2006, 5:21 pm EST

I have to echo some other folks. “Crazy” is the song of the year, much less the summer.

Tiago Moura | 8/14/2006, 6:04 pm EST

Anom and Crazy are really great songs!, but my choice for song of the summer is….

Maneater by Nelly Furtado!!! All that have heard it will understand!

Purplehaze18 | 8/14/2006, 6:12 pm EST

what the hell happened to the rolling stone?

ishmael | 8/14/2006, 6:23 pm EST

When people look back twenty years from now at the pop charts today, and they see that Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous” kept Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” out of the top spot, it’s going to be a true WTF moment. “Crazy” is not only the best song of the summer, but the best song of the year, period.

Also, to anyone who mentioned the Chili Peppers, Tom Petty or Lupe Fiasco, I argue that in each case, their choice for summer single was easily eclipsed by several other songs on the same album, but what do I know? I’m not a marketing executive.

ishmael | 8/14/2006, 6:37 pm EST

And another thing, to everyone criticizing RS for nominating pop crap songs, this list is a “summer songs” (read “pop songs” list). They’re just playing by fair rules. Yeah, most of the summer pop songs are crap, but it’s historically always been that way.

BTW, how come no one has mentioned that “Snakes On a Plane” song? I mean, as a general rule, I hate emo, but that song, unlike most emo, actually has a hook and is catchy as hell.

Carrie M | 8/14/2006, 7:04 pm EST

My Top Eight

1.Dani California-RHCP(sorry Tom Petty)
2.Steady as She Goes-Raconteurs
3.Crazy-Gnarl s Barkley(very original I must admit)
4.Life Wasted-Pearl Jam(they don’t get enough credit)
5.Miss Murder-AFI
6.Ain’t No Other Man-Christina Aguilera(I know I don’t like her either, but the song’s big)
7.Over My Head(Cable Car)-The Fray
8.Animal I Have Become-Three Days Grace

Wow, I can’t think of any other songs. PARIS HILTON SUCKS!!!! She is gonna get shot if she ever goes on tour.

kevin | 8/14/2006, 7:19 pm EST

The mark of a good “Song of the Summer” is that even though it is SO overplayed, you don’t feel like changing the radio station everytime it comes in. The problem with “Ridin”, “Hips Don’t Lie”, “Promiscuous”, and “Over My Head” is that everyone’s pretty much tired of them.
“Ain’t No Other Man”, “Crazy”, “Buttons”, “Dani California” and the song that just won’t die “Walk Away” by Kelly Clarkson are all songs that have been overplayed all summer but you still crank up the volume and sing along when they come on. That’s the mark of a good summer song.

RING THE ALARM AND DEJA VU BY BEYONCE

Patrick | 8/14/2006, 11:38 pm EST

Paris Hilton is on the list, but Beyonce isn’t? Myabe “Deja Vu” isn’t her biggest hit yet, but surely it is 1000 times better than anything Paris Hilton released. I am not so sure about Rolling Stone magazine anymore.

lukas | 8/15/2006, 12:45 am EST

HIPS DONT LIE SHAKIRA

C-mo | 8/15/2006, 1:12 am EST

For me the song of the summer is Crazy by Gnarls Barkley…its so freaking addictive. A close second is Promiscuous, not too far behind is Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie. Beyonce’s Deja Vu, Christina’s Aint No Other Man, and Rihanna’s Unfaithfal/SOS.

DukeChallenger | 8/15/2006, 1:55 am EST

Keane’s “Is It Any Wonder?” is the best song of the summer and of the year, and Under the Iron Sea is the best album of the year. “Don’t Wait” is second…”When you were young” third…

Chris Price | 8/15/2006, 3:20 am EST

Seriously, the best song of the summer is “Dancing In The Street” by Martha and the Vandellas. But why does this really matter?

Ryan | 8/15/2006, 6:27 am EST

Obviously it’s “Crazy.” When was the last time a rock fan, a hip hop fan, and an indie fan were all listening to the same song? Probably when Andre 3000 came out with “Hey Ya.”

I think Crazy and St. Elsewhere will be known as one of the greatest songs and albums (respectively) of our time. Right up there with The Love Below/Speakerboxxx, The Blueprint, Is This It, and Elephant.

Brian | 8/15/2006, 9:44 am EST

Those are some really horrible songs. I think I just remembered why I switched to MOJO. Songs of the summer:

“Life Wasted”- Pearl Jam
“Steady As She Goes”- Raconteurs
“Snow (Hey Oh)”- Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Hands Open”-Snow Patrol
“Waiting On The World To Change”- John Mayer
“Starlight”-Muse

Dazed & Confused | 8/15/2006, 10:27 am EST

#1.Tool’s: The Pot
#2.Bruce Cockburn’s: This Is Baghdad
#3.Wolfmother’s: White Unicorn
#4.Butthole Surfers: Summer In The City
#5.Van Morrison’s: There Stands The Glass
#6.Porcupine Tree’s: Deadwing
#7.Style Council’s: Long Hot Summer
#8.Tom Wilson’s: In Love With The System
#9.Frank Sinatra’s: Summer Wind
#10.Jimi Hendrix’s: Long Hot Summer Night!

Adrian | 8/15/2006, 11:16 am EST

My pick is Madonna’s “Get Together”, another gem overlooked by the dumbasses of American radio, so-called music television and retail. It’s sad to me that the hit songs/billboard charts/popular votes are only music in the basic sense, as most of them feature no singing and can’t be released without “featuring” a bunch of other people along with the so-called artist. Just further proof that our society is in a steady decline.

Burns | 8/15/2006, 11:26 am EST

What the hell, Paris HIlton and Nelly Furtado??? I thought you were kidding, the only two good songs on that list are Dani California and Crazy but come on! it’s Rolling Stone Magazine you guys can do a lot better.
Rock ain’t dying, you’re killing it.

Veronica Mars | 8/15/2006, 11:31 am EST

The song of the summer is clearly Thom Yorke’s “Harrowdown Hill.” All these other songs are garbage, and Rolling Stone needs to shut down because it’s become an absolute train wreck of a magazine. And you people have awful taste in music.

Matt Larkin | 8/15/2006, 11:48 am EST

I have a few songs in mind…

1. Shakira – Hips dont lie
2. Paris Hilton – Stars are blind
3. Nelly Furtado- promiscuous
4. Rihanna – Unfaithful
5. Justin Timberlake – Sexy Back
6. (My Favorite) Fergie – London Bridge

To me summer anthems are just fun songs to listen to and sing along to. Most of you are taking this way too seriously naming some random indie band that no one has heard of just to sound cool. I love RHCP as much and anyone else does and Gnarls Barkley is a great band ( i prefer smiley faces over crazy) along with wolfmother and the raconteurs. but they dont have good “sing along” songs and that to me is what a summer anthem is.

Mark S. | 8/15/2006, 12:31 pm EST

The song of the summer is definitely “Ain’t No Other Man” by Christina Aguilera. It’s just a great fun song.

Beelay | 8/15/2006, 12:55 pm EST

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Show your bones!!

Best album of the year, by far.

Karen O kicks the crap out of Christina, Paris, Nelly, and Shakira

jeffro | 8/15/2006, 1:12 pm EST

well, i dont see it on here, maybe i overlooked it but the first on which comes to mind and by far my fav. is Sublime “summertime( and the livin’s easy)” thats a song that is truely about summer and not just some hit single from 06

Meat Salad | 8/16/2006, 1:30 pm EST

The Flaming Lips – Free Radicals
Saves the Day – Bones
Beck – Earthquake Weather
Bloc Party – Banquet
TOOL – Jambi
John Frusciante – Second Walk

J-Man | 8/16/2006, 6:07 pm EST

Seriously I think almost all of these songs are complete shit. Id pick crazy by Gnarls Barkley because it actually has depth. The RHCP song is a ripoff of Tom Petty and all these other songs r just stupid pop tunes that get way overplayed. I guess that pretty much any overplayed song that comes out during summer is pretty much a contender

Paris Hilton? WTF were u thinkin

dazer_de_verde16 | 8/21/2006, 4:24 pm EST

the list should be as followed:

1. knights of cydonia-muse
2. cheated hearts-yeah yeah yeahs
3.crazy- gnarls barkley
4.steady as she goes-raconters
5. snakes on a plane- cobra starship

quirkeedotcom | 8/22/2006, 5:43 pm EST

seriously…paris hilton? is this rolling stone? did someone here scrape their taste buds off of their tongue and put them on their ears because if you seriously put “Stars are Blind” in a Song Category of any kind, I will seriously gouge my eyes out and never read this again. That is a joke, seriously, I’m begging you, tell me you are joking because NO REPUTABLE MUSIC CRITIC ANYWHERE would call that a good song much less suggest it as the song of the summer. Bad, bad, taste.

Of all time:
1 “Dancin in the Street”
2 “Barbara Ann”- Beach Boys
3 “Come See About Me” -Supremes
4 “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay”
5 Anything else by the Beach Boys
6 “Hot Time, Summer in the City”
7 “Up on the Roof”
8 “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Ohwell. Don’t make much music like they used to…..

yeah, all the rap and pop and alt. rock shit is listed,(don’t get me wrong, chili peppers are ok), but noone thought about wolfmother, the band that proved”rock n roll ain’t noise pollution, ROCK N ROLL AIN’T GONNA DIE”( in the words of brian johson of ac/dc

Somebody | 11/4/2006, 12:25 am EST

The one song that I disagree with choosing for this list is “Do It To It”. I’d like it a little bit if it didn’t steal the beat from Ciara’s “Oh” and constantly talk about OTHER HIP-HOP SONGS.

Oh, and “Steady As She Goes”, “Chasing Cars”, “Animal I Have Become”, and “Knights of Cydonia” (duh) are what I’d add.
