With his album, Year of the Dog…Again currently at #2 on the Billboard charts, DMX has had a pretty good month. He came out to Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem last week for a surprise performance at the NYPD 25th Precinct’s “National Night Out Against Crime” – given all the trouble X has had lately with the Feds (including allegedly impersonating one) it was actually quite endearing to see him bring a positive message to the kiddies. Performing an brief yet energetic set to promote his album, DMX kept the cursing down to a minimum and asked the audience, “How many niggas y’all know got $25,000 bail for a speeding ticket?!” (Technically, he was charged with “aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle” on June 2, but who’s keeping track?)
X says he’s frustrated with all the negative attention: “The only thing about my personal life that they even hear about is what happens in the news, and that’s bullshit,” he says, “At the end of the day, I’m a man, with a family and a good heart.” (We think X might be having it both ways: He’s in charge of his very entertaining reality show on BET, “Soul of a Man,” and it covers plenty of his recent legal ordeals.) Our final question for him: What’s up with those 7-11 microwave egg sandwiches he made for everyone at five in the morning on the show? “Um, I was hungry,” he states plainly. “You gotta try it. It’s like a big, puffy, egg pancake. Put cheese on it. Boom!”
