Carl Barat’s drunken injuries are kind of like his albums: Not quite up to Pete Doherty standards, but darn respectable. Last time we spoke with Carl he was sporting some lovely, gnarly bandages on his shoulder protecting an injury sustained while drunk in the English countryside. Back in 2003 the Libertine smashed one of his cheeks in after taking a hot bath accompanied by a nice bottle of whiskey and cracking his head open on the sink on the way out. He had to undergo two operations to regain proper vision. And now word comes in that the guitarist may not be able to play guitar on his US tour dates (though he will still sing) because he broke his collarbone riding a triumph motorcycle in Taiwan (what is it with Triumphs and rock stars?). Yes, sake was involved.

dear rolling stone,
please stop making a reference to pete in every DPT or carl barat inverview/story. im sure everyone knows the story by now, so stop beating the dead horse. and for Waterloo to anywhere “Not quite up to Pete Doherty standards”, im not quite sure you heard Either album! Reviews are in on DPT US tour and are nothing but amazing. John for the paddingtons is taking carl’s guitar duties and they have not lost a step. for anyone who is interested, read my review of Waterloo to anywhere in the reader reviews section on this site. Ill be seeing DPT on sunday in boston.

couldn’t agree more with “moran”. in general i wish you would stop making fun of pete and seriously focus on his music. and don’t compare pete and carl.
anyways…i hope carl recovers soon. i’d like to see them while they’re over here but i doubt i’ll get to.
dylan rode triumphs, didn’t he? hmm.

Hey, Moran – were you my political science teacher!? If so, what’s up! If not… sorry for the awkward hello. And I completely agree – Pete Doherty does drugs and makes mediocre music – that’s it.

In fact, the cheek/eye injury in 2003 was self-inflicted while Carl was, yes, drunk; in despair and self-hatred, he bashed his face repeatedly against the sink. The story about him falling while getting out of the tub was a cover-up. Carl himself has spoken openly about this in interviews. But I do have to congratulate Elizabeth Goodman for dragging in a Pete Doherty comparison where I for one would have thought such a reference was totally extraneous.
And moran, the Paddington filling in on guitar is Josh (not John) Hubbard.
