The Rolling Stones keep adding dates (this time, a stop at Kentucky’s Churchill Downs is in order) and openers to their fall US tour itinerary. Recently we asked you who you wanted to have open for the Stones and you suggested everyone from the Raconteurs to Wolfmother to the Pink Spiders. Looks like we’re getting Kanye West, Alice Cooper, Dave Matthews, and Canadian rockers Sloan instead. Do you approve?
Opening for the Rolling Stones: Kanye West and … Sloan?

everyone but Kanye West. He’s a joke. Lauren Hill in 3 years.
Phil | 8/8/2006, 3:03 pm EST
nope
skerr | 8/8/2006, 3:18 pm EST
Sloan is the perfect selection. DMB is a ridiculously safe selection. Alice Cooper seems a bizare choice, though nothing can make an old British Invasion band seem less anachronistic than Alice Cooper.
Megan | 8/8/2006, 3:27 pm EST
I have seen Sloan 2 or 3 times and they are definitely the right band to open up for the Rolling Stones…absloutely rockin’! but Dave Matthews? Even Alice Cooper is a bit of an odd choice. Why the Raconteurs or (especially) Wolfmother weren’t asked to the tour boggles my mind!!!
Jack(NY) | 8/8/2006, 4:28 pm EST
DMB/Stones that gonna be one hard ticket to get. Putting two of the most popular bands together it should be a co-headline concert. I wish i could go to that.
me of course | 8/8/2006, 7:04 pm EST
No one under 40 can afford a ticket to a Stones concert so I would say Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Elton John and mix it up with some Social D
Pete | 8/8/2006, 7:14 pm EST
How about The Arcade Fire or The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, that would be trippin
I can’t wait to see the Stones in Halifax on Sept 23rd
Rocky | 8/8/2006, 7:36 pm EST
Anybody but Three Days Grace. I’m going to see the Stones in Vancouver and if Three Days Grace opens I’ll make the Guns N’ Roses riot look like a sunday picnic.
Jim | 8/8/2006, 7:40 pm EST
Who cares? The Stones are about as relevant as Foreigner these days.
dan | 8/8/2006, 8:32 pm EST
sloan’a great choice. a highly underated band with a great live show.
ottomark | 8/8/2006, 9:04 pm EST
I’m with Jim. If I were to go to one of these show’s it’d be for the opener. How many times do you need to hear Brown Sugar? And as much as I like the Raconteurs, I ain’t payin $100 to see them play their 10 songs.
Jake | 8/8/2006, 9:07 pm EST
I like Kanye alot, even though he’s a dick. But him and the Stones…can anyone place hold that much ego? Not a very good choice… IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MY MORNING JACKET!!
Conrad | 8/8/2006, 9:43 pm EST
thatd be a good show with Alice Cooper
nick | 8/8/2006, 9:52 pm EST
DMB is a great choice but Kanye?
Crutnacker | 8/8/2006, 10:06 pm EST
DMB a coheadliner? Maybe with Duran Duran. I’m hoping it’s not DMB in Louisville.
Billy B. | 8/8/2006, 10:10 pm EST
Who cares? Arena shows suck. Besides, the Rolling Stones became rubbish in 1965.
Amanda | 8/8/2006, 10:27 pm EST
Thank god Halifax isn’t getting DMB…Sloan should be awesome and I wouldn’t mind seeing Kanye.
Dave | 8/9/2006, 12:08 am EST
In Saskatchewan, we don’t care. You could roll out a reformed Village People, followed by Foghat (whatever happened to them), and finish it off with a little Asia, THEN have the Stones come out and you’d still sell out the bloody stadium. We’re just happy to have such a stage show come to the province.
andrew | 8/9/2006, 12:26 am EST
dmb/stones means maybe a dave/mick wild horses again?! one can only hope
matt | 8/9/2006, 1:03 am EST
DMB opening for the Stones is a ridiculously good choice. Two of the most popular bands, past and present, will give one hell of a show
Purplehaze18 | 8/9/2006, 1:38 am EST
DMB plus the stones…. i need to change my pants.
Zenidog | 8/9/2006, 2:32 am EST
the stones are still going at it? they’re not even the best 60s band still alive. that title goes to THE WHO! Jaggers/Richards is nothing compared to Townshend/Daltrey.
JD | 8/9/2006, 2:33 am EST
Sloan are probably the best indie rockers to come from Canada and they should have some Stateside success as well.
Rachy | 8/9/2006, 4:58 am EST
Kanye West is a good choice but seriously, the sabatours and wolfmother would have rocked it!
trent | 8/9/2006, 4:59 am EST
how about guns n f’n roses that would kick some f’n ass to great rock bands of all time

Sloan is great! Kanye? This is a rock show! Get him off! Dave Mathews, This is a rock show! Get him off! And Isn’t Alice Cooper a televangelist now?
djones | 8/9/2006, 10:02 am EST
I saw The Stones last night in Nice, France. I saw Alice Cooper 2 years ago at the Monte Carlo Country club ( I’m not making this up). My conclusion? The Stones should open for Alice.
trigganometry30 | 8/9/2006, 10:02 am EST
Some bands just dont need opening acts. Can you imagine The Beatles with someone opening for them if they were still around and playing shows? The Stones are in the same category…legends. Boo’s and restlessness will fill these stadiums when Kanye takes the stage.
trigganometry30 | 8/9/2006, 10:14 am EST
My votes for opening act, though I dont think they need one…
- Bloc Party
- Kaiser Chiefs
- Towers of London
- Franz Ferdinand
- Interpol
clayton | 8/9/2006, 10:57 am EST
how about oasis, ian brown, the charlatans, the black crowes!
that would be a gig of a lifetime!!
clayton | 8/9/2006, 10:59 am EST
ian brown, the charlatans, oasis, and the black crowes, the show of a lifetime with the greatest rock n roll band THE ROLLING STONES to finish
Alex Snell | 8/9/2006, 4:49 pm EST
How about: Sam Roberts, Isley Brothers, Tea Party, THe Guess Who, AC/DC, Rush…oh wait…that was Sarsstock. ( And I Was there ) I do think that that was the best concert since woodstock! ( and one of the biggest ) AC/DC would be great openers but, they kinda blew the Stones away with their fast tempo rock. Umm…Sloan would be great…but, I do think that Alice Cooper will do just fine!
Alex Snell,
Winnipeg,MB
Currently waiting to see the Stones in:
Twickenham ( Aug.22nd )
Regina ( Oct.6th & 8th )
Scroopy Z | 8/10/2006, 5:03 pm EST
Hopefully, one of the Stones will finally kick the bucket pre-tour and no one will have to worry about who opens for them. Their act is old, tired & overpriced. And, what the excitement about seeing them in a 50,000 person stadium? LAME!
Stephen | 8/11/2006, 12:13 am EST
I approve of Kanye and Sloan, but not of Alice Cooper and Dave.
cutiepau | 8/11/2006, 12:54 pm EST
i’m going to see dave and the stones in el paso!!!!!its a dream right? pinch me quick.
Scratch | 8/13/2006, 4:33 pm EST
Does any real Stones fan like Kanye? Oh yeah, I forgot, the real fans stopped going years ago. Alice is closer to their age, but is act is too heavy and dark, won’t play as well during the daylight. I rather pay $40 and see Alice play at the local civic center, at least I would get my money’s worth. Dave Mattzzzzzz, sorry, dozed off there. How coy, and indie band, oh how the Stones like to think they are still relevant to what is current.
me | 8/14/2006, 12:33 pm EST
theres a reason people go to rock concerts…to listen to ROCK.. oh..and to NOT listen to rap… get someone good like greenday or mcr
Brandon | 8/16/2006, 2:22 pm EST
I just learned that Alice Cooper is opening the show at Churchill Downs and I couldn’t be more disappointed. I had a list of bands that I absolutely did not want to open and Alice Cooper is worse than any of them. This could have been a very historical show from start to finish, but they really dropped the on this one. Not all Kentucky residents are rednecks and enjoy acts like Cooper. Were Molly Hatchet and Uriah Heep already booked?
Nigel | 8/16/2006, 9:22 pm EST
The STONES are the greatest rock & roll band ever. You can leave the whiney wannabe’s at home I’m sure your ipods are full of crap like–kane, snow patrol, maroon 5, ect, ect,. Alice Cooper is a fantastic opening act for the STONES. I can’t wait for the show it will be an event for adult’s not idiots who know nothing about real rock
Brandon | 8/17/2006, 1:35 am EST
Nigel, I too think that the Stones are the greatest rock band ever. I am also a music lover whose Ipod contains none of those low talent bands including Alice Cooper. I hear he puts on a neat theatrical performance, but I would rather hear great music. If you think his music is great then you are the one who needs to re-evaluate his musical taste.
Mike | 8/19/2006, 11:37 am EST
may be not the best performers but some of the current top in the business… Good Job!
Dr BLT | 10/6/2006, 2:03 am EST
It must be a great feeling to be opening for the Rolling Stones. I don’t know the feeling of opening for them, but I do know the feeling associated with being asked to perform with them. Let me explain…
