Arthur Lee, founder of the much-beloved, highly influential Sixties band Love, died yesterday afternoon at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, with his wife at his side. The cause was leukemia.

Rest In Peace, Arthur. And thanks for all the beautiful music.

I discovered Love a year ago. Wow ! It seems like Lee anticipated many of the music currents that would follow, like prog rock and punk, and mixed them all together in post-modern fashion. Check out “7 and 7 is” for yourself !

I am a massive fan of Arthur Lee and LOVE….his death saddened me last night. I broke into tears while listening to the song AND MORE AGAIN from FOREVER CHANGES…such incredibly passionate music. I feel his loss very much. R.I.P. ARTHUR.

Man this is just too much. Arthur Lee once wrote a song called “Bummer in The Summer” to which I am now listening on ITunes and it could describe summer 2006 exactly. The Middle East at war, Bush still president, beautiful Syd Barrett dead at 60 and now Arthur Lee, too young at 61, dead after his struggle with AML, the same disease that killed my own mother.
Lee epitomized the LA progressive/psychedelic scene circa 1965-68 in much the same way that Barrett was the avatar of the contemporaneous scene in London. Both were quirky, unique, eccentric, rather reclusive guys who dipped deep into the psychedelic medicine chest and gave the world beautiful music as a result but may have done so at great expense to their own psychic health. It is well known that Lee did not like touring or travelling far from LA, and Barrett lost whatever bearings he may have had during PF’s first US tour in fall 1967. Both were inimitable and it is not likely this hellhole world, in the blazing (global warming-induced) summer of 2006, will see their likes again. Roger Keith, aka Syd, and Arthur, I miss you dudes. Jam on in heaven for eternity.
Sincerely, mackb

It’s a shame that we have lost another visionary. While sometimes I dont doubt arthur would have like to have been bigger than he was, I feel he felt right about the success he had and the people who were his fans. Love has always been a band that I could turn friends on too, and his lyrics could be so basic yet, just throw you for a loop and be the most beautiful thing you had ever heard. Im gonna miss you Arthur.

I always respected and admired Love’s music. I was introduced to it by my ex-boyfriend when I was in my 20’s and of course he was way older than me. I just enjoyed listening to the music and some of the tunes were very good to relax to.
RIP Arthur Lee. All of our time is in God’s hands.

I saw Arthur and Love in San Francisco at The Fillmore and it’s still a great memory. I must have played “Forever Changes” until the vinyl wore out. What an integral part of a scene they were, although underrated, particularly in terms of their later influence. Rest easy, brother!

If it was’nt for Arthur Lee i doubt if there would be any Syd Barrett and thus Pink Floyd. RIP Arthur Lee.

Arthur Lee was such an amazing, multi-talented man. What is so astonishing is that so few people have even heard of him. Those of us who know and appreciate his work need to spread the word about him. Rest in peace, Arthur.
