New Ryan Adams Song: “France”

8/3/06, 3:45 pm EST

Ryan Adams

We would like to assert that we love Ryan Adams. Love him. But the new half-baked breakup song he posted on his Web site is just, alarmingly not-so-good. Not that alarmingly not-so-good new music from Ryan Adams is news. But please, Ryan, we still listen to Heartbreaker every Sunday, can you make this stop?

Readers: are we crazy? Is this a good track?

Definately isnt up to the par Ryan has set for himself. The verses sound kind of cool, but the refrain comes in sounding awkward. Bring back Rock and Roll or Gold

That track is awful. It just doesn’t sound right – like bad karaoke or something. Like that awful Rockstar: INXS cd I got suckered into buying. The music and the vocals just don’t seem to mesh.

if you bought that Rockstar: INXS cd, you shouldnt even comment on this at all. Anyways I think it sounds good.

Not his best, song’s not too bad it’s the voice that doesn’t match…

shamone | 8/3/2006, 5:29 pm EST

reminds me of “That Smell” but I’ll take it. Happy that Ryan is rocking again.

I saw Ryan last weekend in Atlanta on the second night of his 2 night stand at the Tabernacle. Apparently he put on a great show for night 1.

Night 2 was a different story altogether. He said during the show that there would be no repeated songs from the night before. He should have recondsidered.

Marrrghhhh | 8/3/2006, 8:46 pm EST

This song is… Bah. Just like almost everything from Gold onward. I wish he’d take his damn time with a record instead of making this crap.

With the exception of the mild 29, I thought the past efforts were very solid, especially Jacksonville City Nights which I felt was one of his best albums and I own all of them, so its not like I’m basing this just off of Heartbreaker or Cold Roses. But for some reason the website isn’t working, so I’ll have to wait on the song, but so far the comments haven’t deterred me for giving it a listen.

Ryan has always been prolific, so his continuous stream of music should stop coming as a surprise. He is an artist, and he is the type of artist that continually puts out material, so get use to it. As for the new song, it is all right, it is better than 29 but it isn’t as good as Cold Roses. Luckily though, we have a large body of Ryan Adams material to compare this song too.

Sounds very much like Damien Jurado. The man does whatever he wants, take it or leave it. It grows on me with each new listen.

I own all his stuff, for better or worse. I think country ballads are his best works, but I am so ashamed to admit that I like his Rock and Roll record, and this new track. COld Roses/ heart Breaker are of course my favorite, but still, let the man rock if he wants to rock.

I love Ryan Adams as well, but “France” sounds like a bad Strokes song.

jebeal | 8/4/2006, 3:45 pm EST

Was it produced by one or several of the New Pornographers? Not terrible, but I half expected “Jessica Numbers” to break out at any point.

Hustlin | 8/6/2006, 10:26 pm EST

It’s really not that bad of a song. True it sounds like a strokes song at part but it shows that the guy is like 4 genre’s wrapped into 1. It may not be Heartbreaker or Love is Hell but I enjoy it. Even if he is nuts and when you’re at his concerts you’re constantly worried that he might jump off stage and hit you in the face.

Great song by a great artist. period.

I think the important thing here is that it doesn’t matter what I or anyone including Rolling Stone thinks. This song is further testament that Adams will continue to change his music (and continue to be great due in part) and write the music he feels is great. There’s a reason that Adams has put out over an album each year since 2000, and it’s not ’cause he’s reading Rolling Stone.

I like it a lot…very different for him…though it screams Smoking Popes to me.

Greg B | 8/10/2006, 12:06 pm EST

Mixed emotions here. It sounds like a b-side from RockNRoll… an album which I’m told that a real fan is not supposed to like, but whatever – I like it. Ryan can do whatever he wants and I will still buy the record… because I’d like to think that I can understand that his albums change with where his head is at a particular moment in time. People have moods and I’m glad that his music reflects those moods. His music is just like a good friend to me… some days a friend could be happy and elated while on another day he could be bothered and agitated. I don’t think I would want to hang out with someone who was ‘level’ all the time… where’s the fun and interesting part to that?

Ryan Adams is the man!!!!!!!!

Keith V | 8/11/2006, 9:07 pm EST

by the way “Marrrghhhh” you suck!

sabbac | 8/15/2006, 6:48 am EST

The song is good – I like the way the guitars are playing off the drums in the opening sequence (very Rock and Roll Ryan), but as always (apart from the cardinals stuff) the bass is weak. The bombast on the chorus is very Rock and Roll, as is his fractured singing and “draft” lyrics. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a demo from that album rather than a new song.

Emma | 8/22/2006, 1:59 pm EST

it’s definitly nothing super special, but it’s still enjoyable to listen to and i like Ryan when he’s rocking out. any one know where i could download this song?

Jordan | 10/10/2006, 12:05 am EST

The song caught me off gaurd, did sound different, even his vocals. Very dry, but I don’t think it sucked. It didn’t sound like Strokes (Julian can’t even sing) nor did it sound like anything “bar rock”.
It sounded like RA and the Cardinals rocking out which is SURE to be something interesting. Remember, bands and artists evolve…give it a chance, they may be on to something.

BBOW | 10/14/2006, 10:07 am EST

People, this is not serious. If anything, it seems he’s mocking Beck. Which is quite spot-on and funny.
