Best Breakup Songs Ever: Bob Dylan

8/3/06, 6:50 pm EST

Blood On the Tracks

Yes, it’s true. We just can’t stop. Kudos to all of you for some really excellent additions to our original Best Breakup Songs Ever list: Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way”, “Song For the Dumped” by Ben Folds, Pearl Jam’s “Black”, The Beatles’ “Yesterday”, Beck’s “Lost Cause”, The Byrds “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better” and tons more. All awesome.

We think it’s time to delve even further into rock geekiness by listing the best Dylan breakup songs ever. The man indisputably owns this category (sometimes it seems he owns all categories). Blood On the Tracks: Most devestating breakup album ever. Duh. Here’s our list of his ten best but there are sooo many more. Which ones would you add?

Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right
She’s Your Lover Now
It Ain’t Me Babe
It’s All Over Now Baby Blue
You’re A Big Girl Now
Positively 4th Street
Sara
Boots of Spanish Leather
Tight Connection To My Heart
Pledging My Time

How about “Love Sick” from Time Out Of Mind. That and “Standin’ In The Doorway”. Those 2 songs got me through many a breakup…

M | 8/3/2006, 8:25 pm EST

I don’t believe you (she acts like we never met)

Leopard-skin Pillbox Hat

Most Likely you go your way and I’ll go mine

Idiot Wind

Love Sick

Shooting Star

The Groom’s still waiting at the altar

tbor | 8/3/2006, 10:54 pm EST

what about “most of the time?”
such a great tune about lookin back on a break-up from a ways down the road

celia lim | 8/3/2006, 11:16 pm EST

idiot wind! most mean spirited, best break up song ever, coming from the best break up album, blood on the tracks.

A.J. | 8/4/2006, 12:27 am EST

Some suggestions

4th Time Around (one of my favorites)
Idiot Wind
If You See Her Say Hello

PinkPick | 8/4/2006, 12:48 am EST

I’d have to agree with everybody else; “Idiot Wind” is the best suggestion to add-on to the list.

scorpio | 8/4/2006, 1:55 am EST

‘Shelter from the Storm’ – ‘I offered up my innocence, I got repaid with scorn’ is one of my favorite Dylan lines.

mee | 8/4/2006, 2:50 am EST

I’m gonna vote for “Most Likely You Go Your Way and I’ll Go Mine,” too. I’m not as familiar with his later stuff, but that one is classic.

sirpsycho | 8/4/2006, 9:16 am EST

excellent list, “Black” and “Yesterday” especially being great additions to “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”, and the Beck song is maybe his best.

Brian Wallace | 8/4/2006, 10:23 am EST

“Idiot Wind” definitely belongs there but I can’t believe everyone is forgetting “What Was It You Wanted” off “Oh, Mercy.” It matches “She’s Your Lover Now” and “Idiot Wind” for seething vitriol.

Also, “To Ramona” and “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky” but the Bootleg version. The “Empire Burlesque” version is awful in comparison.

Brian

Kate Moss | 8/4/2006, 11:00 am EST

great list. my adds would be… “Sooner or Later One of Us Must Know” and “One Too Many Mornings.”

chokingtara | 8/4/2006, 1:01 pm EST

‘abandoned love’ (from the ‘biograph’ set) is an amazing song – somehow didn’t make the cut for ‘desire’ (and ‘joey’ did!?!?!).

Carl | 8/4/2006, 2:43 pm EST

Some of my favorites:
You’re a Big Girl Now
Standing in the Doorway
Most Likely You Go Your Way (especially the blasting version on “Before the Flood”)
If You See Her Say Hello
Ballad in Plain D
I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Met)
It Ain’t Me Babe
Girl of the North Country
I Threw It All Away

switters | 8/4/2006, 3:04 pm EST

have to add “Honey just allow me one more chance” because it had the line “lookin’ all over for a girl like you, can’t find nobody so you’ll have to do”.

John | 8/4/2006, 6:14 pm EST

Girl from the north country isn’t quite a break-up song, but it deserves to be on every Dylan list lol

Dr. J. | 8/4/2006, 7:32 pm EST

Shelter From the Storm
Abandoned Love
Up to Me
Sooner Or Later One of Us Must Know
I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)
Positively 4th St.
When You Go Your Way and I’ll Go Mine
We Better Talk This Over
Just Like a Woman
Where Are You Tonight (Journey Through Dark Heat)

Dr. J. | 8/4/2006, 7:38 pm EST

Another ten:
Standing In the Doorway
Idiot Wind
You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome
Tangled Up in Blue
Buckets of Rain
Oh, Sister
Love Sick
Most of the Time
I Threw It All Away
Cold Irons Bound

Joey | 8/5/2006, 5:36 am EST

What about ‘Sugar Baby’?
“You went years without me, might as well keep goin’ now…”

Marc | 8/5/2006, 1:31 pm EST

“Simple Twist of Fate” (he blames himself)
“Sara”
“If you see her say hello”

Mac | 8/5/2006, 2:24 pm EST

Well… Positively 4th Street (great song though it is) just aint a breakup song in the traditional sense. He wrote that after Newport (unless you’re talking about Dylan “breaking it off” with the whole folk movement).

I’d have to add Sugarbaby (almost as devistating as Idiot Wind), Standing In the Doorway (heartbreaking), and I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met).

Annie | 8/5/2006, 9:20 pm EST

What about One Too Many Mornings? Did anyone mention that? I think that it’s a great breakup song. It’s simple but you can definitely understand the feeling.

Brennan | 8/7/2006, 12:41 am EST

“If You See Her Say Hello” and “Idiot Wind” would be my two add-ins…depending on if moping or seething is required.

Mike | 8/7/2006, 3:07 pm EST

I can’t believe no one has mentioned “Not Dark Yet”. That’s absolutely one of Dylan’s best that you could consider in break up category.

mike | 8/7/2006, 3:52 pm EST

Don’t think twice, it’s alright!

“you just wasted some of my precious time…”

B.K. | 8/7/2006, 9:23 pm EST

Positively 4th Street…simply the best Dylan song.

One to add would be Tangled Up in Blue.

John R. | 8/8/2006, 1:39 pm EST

I said this with the other break-up song list, too, but you need the sad Idiot Wind from the Bootleg album. It has basically the same words but is even more devastating because it is rueful instead of vitriolic.

Dylan | 8/15/2006, 11:16 am EST

“If you see her, say hello” – simply the saddest song ever written, you can tell how much it hurts him to look back

Johanne | 9/2/2006, 5:46 am EST

oh come on!!! you cannot leave out “one too many mornings” from a list like that!

oldgrannystillrockin | 9/4/2006, 5:43 am EST

“Walk on By” Dionne Warwick.
Tears me up still.

oldgrannystillrockin | 9/4/2006, 5:45 am EST

oops wrong list

Nobody | 9/26/2006, 7:22 am EST

Dylan’s 10 best songs (some of them may be the breakup ones):

1.One more cup of coffe
2.Like a rolling stones
3.Lily Rosemary & The Jack Of Heart
4. Girl from a north country
5.Brownsville Girl
6.Blowing in the wind
7.Shooting Star
8.Knocking on heaven’s door
9.HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN (IS THE BEST DYLAN’S SONG – IMHO)
10. I Want You

Leslie | 2/14/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Ballad In Plain D

None | 7/18/2007, 2:00 am EST

how is “dirge” not on this list?

“I hate myself for lovin’ you and I’m glad the curtain fell.”

John | 3/5/2008, 6:23 pm EST

Yep…Idiot Wind is the most obvious addition

Anonymous | 3/27/2008, 12:49 pm EST

I’m not there-Bob Dylan & the band
Not very well known since it was recorded with the basement tapes but left out for some reason. But since the release of the Dylan movie”I’m not there” anyone who’s a Dylan fan should have heard it by now.

Ron | 11/1/2008, 3:48 pm EST

“I’ll remember you” a hidden gem in his 80’s period
