VMA Nominations: Trying to Care, Finding it Hard

7/31/06, 2:05 pm EST

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira

The MTV Video Music Awards’ rating have been lagging for a while now, and last year’s sweaty shots of Mariah writhing near a swimming pool in Miami didn’t help things. So this year MTV’s making a point of bringing their baby back home to Radio City on August 31st, and planning a night of truly decadent rock behavior. Just one problem with that, based on today’s nomination announcements, the VMA golden-kids this year are the decidedly middle-of-the-road Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shakira, with seven nominations each. Second place for the most nominations goes to Madonna and Panic! At the Disco, with five nominations apiece. Note: Panic! At the Disco weren’t born when the Material Girl performed “Like A Virgin” at the debut VMAs in 1984 but now this ridiculously bombastic, two-year-old goth cabaret act is set to clean up as the hottest new band of the year. Are you feeling nauseous yet? What else … That video where Jared Leto channels The Shining while showcasing his artfully chipped nail polish is up for Best Rock video. Kinda makes you long for the days when the Hives and Vines got their own garage rock corner. Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, T.I., Ludacris, and the Killers will all be performing. Quintuplesome anyone?

the mtv vma’s are merely a reflection of the videos that were in heavy rotation on either mtv or mtv 2. if you were expecting to hear a band like bright eyes or even bloc party receive any nominations then you’re barking up the wrong tree. i’m not saying that i agree w/ all the nominations but then again i don’t go to mcdonald’s for their low-calorie meals.

Elizabeth Goodman | 7/31/2006, 5:13 pm EST

mcdonald’s do have salads, you know. but i get your point. shouldn’t we want decent bands who are also successful in the mix here, though? i’m not asking for an okkervil river nomination.

Ryan | 7/31/2006, 5:56 pm EST

I’m glad Xtina got nominated for Aint No Other Man

MTV Get off the Air Part 7 | 7/31/2006, 7:06 pm EST

So just don’t watch it and spend the evening jacking off to Strapping Young Lad videos on You Tube. That’s probably what I’m gonna do, and I’m sure MTV is going to really miss the 38 other viewers that boycott this dog & pussy show.

Sparty | 7/31/2006, 7:18 pm EST

Are RHCP nominated because their album is good or because they put out an album?

twix | 7/31/2006, 7:26 pm EST

its the vma’s. wouldn’t you be a little more disgusted if a decent bad *did* get a nomination? we dont watch it because it recognizes the truly brilliant musicians of the past year, we watch it because its a circus of over- the- top antics and ridiculous outfits. lets be realistic, when has music ever taken the center- stage on mtv?

Evan | 7/31/2006, 11:34 pm EST

Man do I hate Panic at the Disco.

Mac Daddy | 8/1/2006, 6:12 pm EST

Come on RS, hating on MTV is so 2002. They haven’t been relevant for years so why not just dismiss them with a clever quip and a I-listen-to-way-more-indie-mus ic-than-you attitude? Watching the VMA’s for any reason other than to see desperate career revitalizing make out sessions on stage is a waste of time.

whizkid79 | 8/1/2006, 8:20 pm EST

you can call me a sheep or a conformist all you want but i actually enjoy watching the vma’s. i know most people think it’s wrong to like anything that’s in the top 40, but i’m a big fan of some of the nominees. perhaps i should only listen to bands who look pale and malnutritioned and take themselves way too seriously but that would be boring. ok, now…bring on the hate!!!

sbass | 8/4/2006, 12:15 pm EST

Jared Leto wears decals on his fingers. It’s not chipped nail polish. Da!

CMadDog | 8/4/2006, 1:14 pm EST

They have Videos and Music on MTV? Since when?

kd;alkd | 8/4/2006, 2:33 pm EST

wow sbass! who really cares?

iwantmyMTVback | 8/4/2006, 3:01 pm EST

I wish they nominated better videos and artists that actually are decent and worthy of those awards…instead of ones that they think will bring in ratings. They’d get ratings if the VMAs were like how they used to be instead of dedicated to teeny boppers and false idols.

frankiebaby | 8/5/2006, 10:34 pm EST

basically.the nominees suck.
panic at the disco is so stupid.i wish i could spit at every person i saw walking around in there little panic!band tees.the one good band up there is red hot chili peppers.atleast i can safely say is that they are a amazing band, and mtv has a tad of sense knocked in their boots.

Somebody | 8/6/2006, 2:25 pm EST

You don’t watch this stuff for quality. I watched last year to watch Mariah embarass herself and I’ll watch this year to see if I can figure out what “I chime in with a ‘haven’t you people ever heard of, closing the g*ddamn door’” means. What a stupid song.
AND maybe there will be another “Bands Reunited” moment a la Van Halen.

Carrie M | 8/6/2006, 11:06 pm EST

Panic! at the Diso?
Fall Out Boy?
wtf is up with that? they could at least get one good band in the show besides RHCP. And since when did mtv play music anyways

Green Day!! | 8/7/2006, 1:59 pm EST

Green Day should win best rock video. their video has a message, and it’s the best musically as well. P!ATD? Who are we kidding? Green Day Without a doubt

Daniel | 8/7/2006, 2:02 pm EST

The VMA’s are really aimed more towards the newer generation of kids ranging in age from 14-24, NOT the people who are complaing here. The people complaining here are probably older than this and grew up with the original MTV. Get over it, just becuase you are stuck on the bands you grew up with doesn’t mean you need to bash what people listen to today. Atleast MTV nominated some true artists, and not Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton etc…atleast most of the nominees are actually talented in some way. By the way, Xtina deserves her nods.

andrea | 8/7/2006, 5:54 pm EST

Stop hating on panic at the disco. They are one of the most orginal bands that have come out recently. As for jared leto, he is the only actor i have ever seen that actually can sing and 30 seconds to mars deserves to be recognized for their unqiue sound. As for all you haters, remember that a critic is just someone who is bitter because because they have no talent.

Green Day!! | 8/8/2006, 2:34 pm EST

Andrea- You call Panic! at the Disco original!!?? wtf?! they are just copying fall out boy (who aren’t that good anyway)P!ATD fans are just teeny boppers who turned to emo.And if you say those who critisize don’t have talent? Do you play any instruments? Well I do, so F**K YOU!!!

Dwayne W. | 8/9/2006, 1:42 pm EST

I really don’t see the big deal why people are ranting and raving over this year’s nominees! I will admit I was a little dumb-founded when I heard Shakira was nominated for Video of the Year. Frankly, I don’t think it’s that good a video. It’s a colourful video, one that remonds me of carnival in my country, and yes, Shakira looks absolutely ravishing! But I really don’t get it. (Neither do I get the Song!) I’m not a fan of Panic! at the Disco, so I have nothing to say concerning them. I’m really glad though, about Madonna’s & Christina Aguilera’s noms! They are really two of the best videos i’ve seen in the last yr, and they really capture the essence of the songs. So my vote goes out to one of them. (Though I secretly hope & pray that Xtina wins!)
On that note, it should be pointed out that a horrible song can have a good accompanying video& vice versa, so we need not mention the quality of the songs themselves. It is called the Mtv VIDEO Music Awards! So let’s argue about song and album quality, when the Grammys dole out their nominations, huh?

Mr. Green Genes | 8/10/2006, 5:58 am EST

MTV’s VMA’s are a joke…and not a very good one at that.

SUAVEGRL | 8/10/2006, 4:04 pm EST

GO CHRISTINA! I HOPE SHE WINS

Panic! at the Disco? Original? I liked them better when they were called Green Day and Blink 182! Oh please just give it up, a critic is someone who knows what they’re talking about, unlike 18 year olds who pretend they do.

goodtuneseeker | 8/11/2006, 11:22 am EST

the vma’s is technically an awards show pointed to my -younger-generation and not at ppl who actually take into consideration the quality of the voices and the video, the relevance of the video to the song,. the choreography, etc. exactly the reason y those categories such as best director, best choreography are not open to the public vote. seriously, come on ppl! this is MTV we’re talkin about. u can’t expect a station thats based on popularity with boy/girl crazed tens would let out some sho like the grammys! sure it pisses me off too the name means “music television” and only about two or three hours of air time is devoted to music in the wee hours of the morning wen everybody’s asleep, but thats the way mtv is. we shouldn’t hav better expectations of them. they’ve been around for wat? 25 years? and over that period they’re become apart of today’s pop culture. such is life. such is MTV.
p.s. panic! at the disco SUCKS TIMES 100,000,000,000,000. the name is stupid, the songs dont make ne sense, and neither do the videos.

Amanda | 8/11/2006, 3:15 pm EST

goodtuneseeker you better stop hating on the best band in the world!! They do make sense and your just to stupid to figure it out. leave them alone and go to hell

P!ATD LOVER | 8/11/2006, 3:22 pm EST

Green day Panic! at The disco is so an origanal and don’t you dare call me a teeny-bopper. plus i’m not only a fan i know everything about and love everything about Panic! At The Disco so F*** yourself

P!ATD LOVER | 8/11/2006, 3:26 pm EST

Panic! AT THE DISCO ROX MY SOX AND ANYONE WHO DISAGREES CAN GO TO A DIFFERANT WEBSITE AND COMPLAIN TO ALL THEIR LITTLE POSER FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

darkstar1222 | 8/11/2006, 6:13 pm EST

i’m glad no one has anything better to do with their lives than cuss other people out who like different kinds of music on an internet post thread.

BBGun | 8/11/2006, 6:39 pm EST

Panic! At the disco?! YOU SERIOUS?! that video sucks!!!!! i cant even believe their nominated. I think that “goth moulin rouge” is getting old already. chemical romance & evanecence did it first.

I love christina but the 30’s are played out! smooth criminal, caught up, gimme that… anyone? all 30’s videos.

the red hot chilli peppers video has a good concept but it looks very cheap sorry.

.. so the only 2 videos worth VIDEO OF THE YEAR are HUNG UP & HIPS DONT LIE. both very artistic. BUT most likely they wont because of all the pathetic panic at the disco fans voting for that HELENA WANNABE VIDEO.

Carrie M | 8/12/2006, 12:07 am EST

woah Amands, to you Panic! at the Disco may sound good, but then again it’s probably hard to hear with your head up your ass. I guess I’m going to hell b/c they make no sense at all. It’s just my opinion though.

P!ATD LOVER, I don’t have any little poser friends, and the posers I know like Panic! at the Disco. So I guess that makes you a poser.
By the way, the mtv VIDEO awards are about the best VIDEOS. no one cares if you like the band. Personally, the Panic! video sucked. If mtv was giving awards out for worst band in the world, then Panic! at the Disco might win.

SoulSista#1 | 8/12/2006, 3:07 pm EST

VIACOM is gonna’ get busted for promoting degrading images of black people, especially black women. There’s gonna’ be massive static at the VMAs. Christina Norman, you are nothing but a SELL OUT!

Miguel G | 8/13/2006, 12:54 am EST

I hope the RHCP will win several awards.

Jason | 8/13/2006, 1:03 pm EST

Okay. I was indeed a bit dazzled that Skakira got 7 nominations. I think the song is excellent and the video is nice, but I don’t think it is that excellent to go up with seven nominations. The RHCP have their credentials….so, It was a safe bet. I still dont get Panic!. I am truly sorry for all the fans, but I do think this is very overrated!
Christina’s video is excellent, I have to be honest, even though I am not a fan, her video is fantatsic.
Madonna is in a class of her own and still rocking. The song is an A+, the video is an A.

I think that RHCP will win the video of the year though.
Madonna will leave with two moonmen, Shakira will probably levae empty handed….

p.s.: What happened to Ne-Yo? I thought that was an excellent video, as well as the videos from DC….

PopCultureWhore | 8/14/2006, 1:33 pm EST

I was generally underwhelmed with the line up…To me the BEST of the Video of the Year pics is MADONNA’s HUNG UP, easily…She is still amazing and the video is terrific. I think Christina’s vid is just fine…but as someone else here has said…it’s been done…It’s typical Bryan Barber. the other vids really are sub-par.

Most distressing is the TRL style voting method…depending on the moods of the kids voting on line we could see some poor choices made.

Andrew | 8/14/2006, 7:07 pm EST

eminem should had won thatnamine not modona and afi to not panic!at the disco

Matt | 8/15/2006, 6:46 am EST

I don’t know about anyone else, but MTV doesn’t play music where I live until about 1 in the morning. So how can they hold a video awards show. As for the nominees, I’m sure every 14 year old in the world is jumping for joy but unless they drench Kelly Clarkson again I’m not watching.

matt | 8/15/2006, 1:12 pm EST

remember when MTV actually played videos? These nominations are terrible. Panic! at the disco is trash. They are just another fad that will soon run its course. If they didn’t rely on theatrics then nobody would listen to them. At least artists like Bowie and Marlyn Manson made good music behind the image. Panic is shallow. As far as new artists go, the Racontuers are the real deal.

palominosmusic.com | 8/17/2006, 11:42 am EST

PEARL JAM!

George F | 8/21/2006, 4:45 pm EST

Madonna’s Hung up…absolute winner in every category, the vid is flawless and well paced, the song is beyond incredible…Madonna hands down!

Panic! is awesome. | 8/25/2006, 7:17 pm EST

I dont care what anyone else says, I love them, Brendon Urie has the most amazing voice ever.
And if anyone has a problem with them, they should just shove it up their ass.

Joe | 8/30/2006, 4:40 pm EST

Shakira is gonna win cause shes the best like it or not….. so face it

Panic at the disco is gonna win

i hate the cristina song so bad ewwwwwwwwww

Xgirl/JOS | 8/30/2006, 9:40 pm EST

Green Day should be nominated for video of the year. “Wake Me Up When September Ends” trumps every other video up for the award.

jfire | 9/1/2006, 2:21 pm EST

Watched the awards show last night. (well as much as I could stand) WOW has it gone down hill, or is all of the new music out now just here today gone tommorrow one hit wonder stuff. Bring back some rock to MTV. I thought the show last night should have been renamed “the hip hop awards show” Wonder why they had hardly any real rockers in attendance. sad to see something that was so cool at one time just gone down the tube.

Hannah | 9/1/2006, 6:34 pm EST

Um. I’ve liked Panic! at the Disco since their album first came out, but that doesn’t mean that they and Fall Out Boy are the only two bands I listen to.

Besides, it’s just an awards show that a lot of people decided they didn’t care enough about to watch. So why bother fighting about who deserved to win and who was awful?

Haha, | 9/2/2006, 12:10 am EST

Wow, you guys…I’m sorry, I don’t think that 30 Seconds To Mars should of won the MTV2 Awards….I think Taking Back Sunday shoulda won. They worked their ass off on ‘Louder Now’ and they are still kick-ass after their former band-member (John Nolan) left. I think TBS needs some recognition…and Panic! At the Disco, sounds hella lot like Fall-Out Boy to me. (Just listen closly) And the performance last nite with PATD…er..well let’s say it wasn’t PRETTY.

Haha (same person) | 9/2/2006, 12:12 am EST

To all Panic! At the Disco fans….stop saying “o Panic at the disco ROX my sox blah blah fuck ur selves…blah blah” oh please, shut up. If u were a true Panic! At The Disco fan, atleast be respectful, bitches.

jonny | 9/23/2006, 4:46 pm EST

justin | 11/7/2006, 8:39 pm EST

i dont understand why so many hate p!atd. those who say it dosent make sense, i promise it does. theyre probably a little too deep for most of mainstream audience, which is why so many people hate them. they find them absurd, and pointless, only because they dont understand their lyrics, but there IS meaning in their songs. theyre not just a bunch of words thrown together, and, oh, we have a song! theyre very detailed and very creative and clever. its good. try listening to the album with an open mind. honestly guys, dont be so closed minded. there are alot of bad bands, and bad artists out there right now, but panic, is not one of them. give them an actual chance before making up your minds. thanks.
