List of the Day: Best First Songs on First Albums

7/31/06, 2:05 pm EST

Please Please MeAnother fabulously time-wasting exercise in rock geekiness: We’ve put together a totally unscientific, wholly off-the-top-of-our head list of the best first songs on first albums. We tried to stear clear of hit singles that overshadow the albums (”Where Did Our Love Go?”, “Good Times Bad Times”, “I Want You Back”) or bands that made their proper debuts with Eps (so no “Radio Free Europe”, “Summer Babe”, or “Bone Machine”). Here’s what we came up with. What else should be here?

The Beatles: “I Saw Her Standing There” on Please Please Me
Joy Division: “Disorder” on Unknown Pleasures
Van Halen: “Runnin’ With the Devil” on Van Halen
The Clash: “Janie Jones” on The Clash
The Ramones: “Blitzkrieg Bop” on Ramones
Jimi Hendrix: “Purple Haze” on Are You Experienced
The Stone Roses: “I Wanna Be Adored” on The Stone Roses.
Blondie: “X-Offender” on Blondie
Run-DMC: “Hard Times” on Run-DMC
X: “Your Phone’s Off The Hook But You’re Not” on Los Angeles.

baba o’riley on who’s next.
american pie on american pie, but that might fit into the single-that-overshadows-the-al bum problem.

IBeDaMan | 7/31/2006, 2:22 pm EST

Eruption isn’t the first song on Van Halen, it’s Running With the Devil, which could certainly qualify as well.

Phil | 7/31/2006, 2:36 pm EST

excellent list.

mas:

bombtrack by rage against the machine, an amazing first song on one of the most important albums of the last fifteen years

PinkPick | 7/31/2006, 2:42 pm EST

The Velvet Underground “Who Loves The Sun” on Loaded; doesn’t overshadow or predict what follows and starts off Loaded with beautiful melancholy. Underappreciated classic.

Evan | 7/31/2006, 2:46 pm EST

“Who’s Next” wasn’t their first album. Was “My Generation” the first song on “The Who Sings…”? If so, that should absolutely be on there.

Evan | 7/31/2006, 2:52 pm EST

Also, The Doors: “Break on Through…” on The Doors and Sex Pistols: “Holidays in the Sun” on Nevermind the Bollocks.

Tujague | 7/31/2006, 3:01 pm EST

i would definetely say that “lost ones”, track 1 on lauryn hill’s album “the miseducation of lauryn hill” deserves to be mentioned (technically, track 1 was an intro but “lost ones”, track 2, was the official first song). they’re have been female mc’s before and after that album, but in my opinion none of them have been able to match the flow and lyricism l-boogie had on that song.

Joe | 7/31/2006, 4:59 pm EST

To RacerRx

“Nevermind” was not Nirvana’s first album….”Bleach” was….

mike | 7/31/2006, 7:01 pm EST

This one just popped in my head,

“Respectable Street,” XTC. First track off The Black Sea. Starts off sounding like an old-timey record, then blasts into some sweet 80’s mod-rock.

I’ll also add – while I’m thinking about it – “Destination” which is the first track off The Church’s LP, Starfish. I love the way it builds up with a lone guitar, then the bass, then the drums before getting into it…

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Keep up the great work RS!

Kid Boss | 7/31/2006, 7:04 pm EST

Blue Suede Shoes was the first song on Elvis Presley’s first album not heartbreak hotel.

Steve C | 7/31/2006, 7:13 pm EST

“Mass Romantic” -> New Pornographers: Mass Romantic

“Tunnels-Neighborhoo d #1″ -> Arcade Fire: Funeral (If you don’t count their first EP release…if that counts, then the first track from that is pretty ok too)

Chris | 7/31/2006, 7:14 pm EST

Round Here – Counting Crows on August and Everything After … with the 18 seconds of silence and then it goes into the song. It’s a great opening to a great record.

Sparty | 7/31/2006, 7:15 pm EST

“Rock n Roll Star”
Oasis
Definately Maybe

Great song on a great debut album. Surprising that this many people think so too because DM wasn’t that big of a deal in the US.

Mike27 | 7/31/2006, 7:31 pm EST

Sorry Kid Boss, but “Heartbreak Hotel” was the first song off of Elvis’ first album.

KeithRicain | 7/31/2006, 7:39 pm EST

Cherub Rock was on Siamese Dream, the Pumpkins’ second album. but I would like to put in a vote for “I Am One” from Gish, ’cause it kills.

Ryan | 7/31/2006, 7:42 pm EST

‘Tunnels’ by Arcade Fire is incredible, Steve C is right about that.

And ‘Is This it?’ can’t be denied, both for its tremendous lack of enthusiasm and its perfect tone.

Somebody | 7/31/2006, 7:44 pm EST

Actually shocked this hasnt been mentioned yet…

“Rhymin and Stealin”- Licensed to Ill by The Beastie Boys…really kicked off their career(in mainstream, I’m kicking my self for not mentioning it)

I Don’t Want A Love – Southside by Texas
Laura – Scissor Sisters by Scissor Sisters

Teachmeow | 7/31/2006, 8:14 pm EST

R.E.M.’s “Radio Free Europe” has to count! Yes, The “Chronic Town” EP preceded “Murmur”, but RFE was recorded and released as a single before “Chronic Town” was even conceived! So, if I can’t have that, then “I Will Follow” by U2 from “Boy”, “Good Times Roll” from the Cars’ first album, and the lesser known “Don’t Fight It” from Red Rider’s album of the same name. By the way folks, let’s play by the rules: first album, first song.

baldilocks84 | 7/31/2006, 8:17 pm EST

Good evening people, welcome to the show, gotsomething here I want you all to know-Aerosmith Hey now everybody, please don’t walk or roam. we’re a little nervous, ’cause we’re so far from home.-Chicago(Transit Authority)

Kudoes to whoever said “Chochise” from Audioslave. That is such a rocking song and they have yet to top it… I was also going to say “My Name is Jonas” from Weezer.

Linus Maxwell | 7/31/2006, 8:24 pm EST

It astonishes me to see that “Are You Jimmy Ray” by Jimmy Ray hasnt been mentioned yet. Are you people all born after 1998 or have you all just forgotten that magical sound. The guy is one of the best song writers since John Lennon and it makes me sick that Rolling Stone left him off the list. Shame on you people.

Erik E Erik | 7/31/2006, 8:29 pm EST

“Ice Ice Baby” by Vanillia Ice off of “To the Extreme”. This song broke all the rules and all the records, and we’re still feeling the shockwaves today. It revolutionized pop culture and shook Western Civilization to its pre-Vanilla core! Word to your mutha!!

Bubba Ray Gracie | 7/31/2006, 8:33 pm EST

The correct answer is “Welcome to the Jungle.”

Clint G. | 7/31/2006, 8:34 pm EST

Clearly the Jouhua Tree is probably the finest song to grace track 1 of any album, although Baba O’Riley is a close second in terms of classic unmatchable records. If you want to get new agey and emote, My Chemical Romance’s “Helena” does an amazing job of leading off the best record of 2004.

chris | 7/31/2006, 8:37 pm EST

Baba O’ Riley “Who’s Next”

Sunday Morning,Tears of Rage, and Welcome to the Working Week are all good picks. Then there’s always Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town off Talking Heads ‘77. But I think the best is Gloria from Horses by Patti Smith. Opens with the line “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine.” Amazing. But Welcome to the Jungle? Please. All bombast, no substance. Just look at what great work Axl and Slash have done over the last fifteen years. Too bad they spent most of their creativity coming up with their fake names.

By the way Off the Wall wasn’t Jacko’s debut album. He had a few albums in the early seventies at the same time he was leading the Jackson 5.

and I looked at my copy of Elvis’ first album and Blue Suede Shoes was the first song. Heartbreak Hotel was originally a single only but it is included in the bonus tracks on this edition.

You know, you say that you didnt include hit singles that overshadow their respective albums, but you still included “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “Purple Haze”, which are undoubtedly the most famous songs of those artists’ careers, and the grand majority of the masses only associate the Ramones and Jimi Hendrix with those respective songs when pressed.

Anyways, I have a few more suggestions:

“1969″ from The Stooges’ first
“Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town” from Talking Heads ‘77
“See No Evil” from Marquee Moon (Television)
“Neat Neat Neat” from Damned Damned Damned (The Damned)
“Welcome To The Working Week” from My Aim Is True (Elvis Costello)
“Tears Of Rage” from Music From Big Pink (The Band)
“Underdog” from A Whole New Thing (Sly and the Family Stone)
“Astronomy Domine” from The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (Pink Floyd)
“Mother” from Plastic Ono Band (John Lennon)
“Gloria” from Horses (Patti Smith)
“I’d Have You Anytime” from All Things Must Pass (George Harrison)
“Holidays In The Sun” from Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols
“Break On Through” from The Doors’ first
“Take It Easy” from The Eagles’ first
“Magic Man” from Dreamboat Annie (Heart)
“Personality Crisis” from the New York Dolls’ first

And I am going to include “Good Times Bad Times” off of Led Zeppelin’s first because in reality, other tracks from that album (i.e. “Communication Breakdown,” “Dazed and Confused”) have eclipsed that song in popularity…in fact I dont see or hear of any instances after 1969 of Zep playing that song live, and yet they played “Dazed and Confused” at their Knebworth shows, their last live outing as a complete unit. Also the only promo (music video) they ever recorded was for “Communication Breakdown,” and not “Good Times Bad Times” even though, yes, that was their first single.

P.S. Anyone who says that “I’ll Do Anything” made Simple Plan one of the most respected punk rock bands of the last 20 years does NOT deserve the nickname “Punkrawkchik.” Like them, I’m from Canada, and I still find that comment offensive.

ishmael | 8/1/2006, 2:00 am EST

I’ve gotta say, this list is kind of reaching, even for a Rolling Stone blog. How about we narrow it down just a bit more, by making it: best second songs off of first albums that start with the letter “K.” I vote for “Killing In the Name Of” by Rage Against the Machine. What does Rolling Stone say?

Scott | 8/1/2006, 2:12 am EST

24) “If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free” – Sting

27) “I Must Be High” – Wilco
28) “Harlem” – Bill Withers
29) “Honky Tonk Man” – Dwight Yoakam
30) “Johnny Strikes Up the Band” – Warren Zevon

FIRST songs on FIRST albums; its not that hard of a concept people so please stop listing songs that weren’t first tracks and/or weren’t on debut albums. seriously, if you can’t understand this, maybe don’t post.
My list:

Pearl Jam- Once
The Doors- Break on Through
The Strokes- Is This It
Oasis- Rock and Roll Star
Arctic Monkeys- View from the afternoon

“The Power of Equality” from Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I cant believe this hasn’t been mentioned, you guys must be idiots or something like that. Great band, great debut, great everything all around. You people should learn something about music sometime. Sometime soon.

Norm | 8/1/2006, 7:59 am EST

This argument/discussion begins and ends with Welcome to the Jungle.

Is this guy below me serious w/ the Chili’s comment? I guess he is considering their “90’s debut” a resurrection from the 4 or so records in the 80’s.

Johnny Bop | 8/1/2006, 8:11 am EST

How has no one said “I Dont Know” by Ozzy. Started off a great solo career and introduced the world to Randy Rhoads which is enough by itself.

Beadle | 8/1/2006, 8:21 am EST

Unfortunately In the City by the Jam was on side 2.

So I’m going for Turn the page from The streets Original Pirate Material.

Also how hard is it for some people to grasp that it is first track from first album- it really does beggar belief!

Charlie B | 8/1/2006, 8:26 am EST

“Ironic” by Alanis Morissette. That dyke could write some damn fine tunes in her day.

Charlie B | 8/1/2006, 8:38 am EST

I know it’s considered overplayed and whatnot but you cant deny the power of “Stairway to Heaven” it has got to be up on this list. Kiss just wouldnt be the same band if they hadnt recorded it.

Chocolate Starfish | 8/1/2006, 8:51 am EST

no love for Dio’s “Stand Up and Shout” huh, thats cool he probably wouldnt vote for any of your crappy songs either. He’d probably vote for something cool that you’ve never heard of about wizards and dragons.

How about ‘The Look’, by Roxette! :D Read ‘em and weep Master Of Puppets! :D

Lobsters | 8/1/2006, 9:19 am EST

“Bad Girl” is the best song on the first New York Dolls album and the best song on the first Replacements album is “Don’t Ask Why”.
People sure listen to some weird stuff. Paul Simon? You should listen to some Elvis. Elvis PRESLEY, I mean.

Matthew | 8/1/2006, 9:30 am EST

I Wanna Be Adored by the Stone Roses on The Stone Roses and Frankly Mr Shankly by The Smiths on The Queen Is Dead have to be 2 of the best

Matthew | 8/1/2006, 9:35 am EST

It should’ve been The Queen Is Dead and not Frankly Mr Shankly (which is still a good track 2 though), sorry

tlmucla | 8/1/2006, 9:40 am EST

I agree with those of you who said “More than a feeling” off of Boston’s debut. However, I should point out that Boston no longer is the top selling debut. It was surpassed by two monster albums from the ’90s that had pretty good opening tracks:

“What I really want” Alanis Morressette – Jagged Little Pill (”Ironic” was much later in the album).
“Hanna Jane” Hootie & the Blowfish – Cracked Rear View (admit it, you rocked to it in the mid-90s).

Not saying their the best opening songs on a debut, but they were great openings to monster debuts.

Also, since nobody else has said it, how about:

“Best of what’s around” Dave Matthews Band – Under the Table and Dreaming

“My Generation, Part II” Todd Snider – Songs from a Daily Planet (for all you Todd Snider buffs)

Otis Jones | 8/1/2006, 10:06 am EST

Jane’s Addiction – Stop!
Smashing Pumpkins – Cherub Rock
Kings of Leon – Slow Night, So Long

Michael | 8/1/2006, 10:07 am EST

damn, some of you people need to check your facts: Blood Sugar Sex Magik is NOT RHCP first album, the Queen is Dead is not the Smiths’ first album, and for the love of God, whoever put Stairway to Heaven…shame shame!

LMAO!

Their first song on their first album, a song that proved strangely poignant considering the trajectory of their career, the loss of Freddie, etc.

Steve C | 8/1/2006, 2:37 pm EST

How ’bout “Casual Affair” by Tonic: Lemon Parade

I may really suck, but in the 90’s I thougth that album was the bomb (’If you could see the way she loves me’ is the WORST song on the album IMHO)

chokingtara | 8/1/2006, 2:39 pm EST

i forgot ‘frightened’ off live at the witch trials by the fall, and ‘orgasm addict’ by buzzcocks from ’singles going steady’ (not their first album i think but it was their first proper US release, so there) – “well you tried it just for once, find it all right for kicks, then you find out that it’s a habit that sticks…” class.

Steve C | 8/1/2006, 2:40 pm EST

..and if this isn’t his first album, I apologize, but the first track on Damien Rice’s ‘O’ is a fine song (the title escapes me at the moment).

Dan Whitney | 8/1/2006, 2:43 pm EST

so glad to see a couple people listed Suite:Judy Blue Eyes… that’s MY nomynee!

Boston15 | 8/1/2006, 2:47 pm EST

FYI- Doolittle was NOT the first album for the Pixies, so Debaser (which is an incredible song), does not count. If you are a fan of “Bone Machine” from their debut album Surfa Rosa, then add that.

manoutoftime | 8/1/2006, 2:51 pm EST

I’d have you anytime
George Harrison ATMP..it counts!!

The Dude | 8/1/2006, 2:58 pm EST

The Tragically Hip’s self titled debut was an EP, so small town bringdown doesnt count(even though it is a great song) should of said Blow at High Dough

Jess B. | 8/1/2006, 3:06 pm EST

I agree with Ryan Adams’ “To Be Young,” which is the most ridiculously catchy pot-smoking song ever. Even though it’s technically the second track, as the first is just Ryan babbling about something… and even though Heartbreaker is just his solo debut (don’t forget Whiskeytown).

Oh, and Weezer’s “My Name is Jonas” is definitely on there.

And I just have to add John Mayer’s “No Such Thing” to this list! (Even if you consider the ‘Inside Wants Out’ EP to be his debut, it’s the same song!) That song immediately set him up as a talented singer-songwriter with some major potential, even if “Your Body is a Wonderland” sucks big time.

Mike S. | 8/1/2006, 3:06 pm EST

Since so many posters didn’t read the question, I’ll take it one step further. Worst Last Song of Last Album.

Led Zeppelin /ITTOD “I’m Gonna Crawl”

Nope sorry, Coda doesn’t count, it was an “afterthought” compilation. (hence the title)

Once, Pearl Jam.
Colossal, Wolfmother.
Enough.

Rapture06 | 8/1/2006, 3:21 pm EST

Well nice to see so many illiterates here. The deal is best first songs off first records..not first songs off your favorite.

And indeed people saying think before you post duh…every real fan of Nirvana should know that BLEACH was it’s debut NOT NEVERMIND!

Also to a guy that just posted, about The Hip, that’s partially true, cuz yeah the first self-titled record did start as an EP, but was later sold to at that time MCA as a major label release, so in hindsight that could be called a major debut.

I think the same goes for Megadeth’s Killing Is My Business…, it was technically an EP on Combat records back in ‘84, but it was sold to Capitol and was re-released as a major debut, so while some say Peace Sells is the band’s debut, I would say Killing is.

That being said here’s my choices:

Runnin’ With The Devil – Van Halen (Van Halen I)
Welcome To The Jungle – Guns N Roses (Appetite For Destruction)
Cowboys From Hell – Pantera (Cowboys From Hell)
Head Like A Hole – Nine Inch Nails (Pretty Hate Machine)
Suite-Pee – System Of A Down (System Of A Down)
Bored – Deftones (Adrenaline)
Bombtrack – Rage Against The Machine (Rage Against The Machine)
Cochise – Audioslave (Audioslave)
Rock N Roll Star – Oasis (Definitely Maybe)
Cult Of Personality – Living Colour (Vivid)
Pain Lies On The Riverside – Live (Mental Jewelry)
Shine – Collective Soul (Hints, Allegations & Things Left Unsaid)
Kryptonite – 3 Doors Down (The Better Life)
We Die Young – Alice In Chains (Facelift)
Love Burns – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (B.R.M.C)
Blind – KoRn (KoRn)
Jimmy Olsen’s Blues – Spin Doctors (Pocketful Of Kryptonite)
Trip Like I Do – Crystal Method (Vegas)

Do your homework people!!!

Mitch Norton | 8/1/2006, 3:26 pm EST

Not enough hip hop on this list (though I give shout outs to those recognizing Biz Markie and Mos Def.) Got to include “I Ain’t No Joke” from Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid in Full.

Rudy Pilfer | 8/1/2006, 4:10 pm EST

whats next….which CD case of yours has the most scratches on it?

Curt | 8/1/2006, 4:16 pm EST

I hate senior moments. Illegal Smile was the first song on Prine’s first. That works just as well, and it lasts a long time.

Roger Toonoot | 8/1/2006, 4:24 pm EST

A couple more, starting with the mother of all first song/first album:

Roadrunner–The Modern Lovers

Two Dollar Wine–The Glands

The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness–The Feelies

Howling Wind–Graham Parker

Kev | 8/1/2006, 4:26 pm EST

I remember more now!!

Live Wire – Motley Crue (off Too Fast For Love)
Like Eating Glass – Bloc Party

…but I still say Rock ‘N Roll Star by Oasis is the crowning Jewel. What would have happened if they didn’t become R’N R stars? That song would have been joked about…but somehow they(Noel) knew it.

Bombtrack- RATM
Head Like a Hole- NIN
Good Times Bad Times- Zeppelin

Without a doubt the best one is:

Welcome to the Jungle- GnR

Justin | 8/1/2006, 4:39 pm EST

I really liked this list. I was especially glad to see: I Saw Her Standing There, Disorder, Janie Jones (even though I only own the US version so I didn’t even realize this was the first song on the original album), Blitzkrieg Bop, Purple Haze, I Wanna Be Adored (this is my favourite song off the list).

I would add:
Oasis: “Rock n Roll Star” on Definitely Maybe
Weezer: “My Name Is Jonas” on Weezer
The Strokes: “Is This It” on Is This It
VU: “Sunday Morning” on VU and Nico

By the way:
Loaded isn’t the VU’s first album, it was their last. And My Generation isn’t the first song on Who sings my generation, but it is there best.

D | 8/1/2006, 4:47 pm EST

Art Brut’s “Formed a Band”

Menem | 8/1/2006, 5:04 pm EST

Someone included Charly Garcia, the best latinamerican rocker in the history of latinamerican rock.
I want to include another argentine great first song in a debut album:

“Welcome to the Working Week” from Elvis Costello’s “My Aim is True”. Angry, dirty, snarky and mean: “Now that your picture’s in the paper being rhythmically admired…” Brilliant.

Joe | 8/1/2006, 6:36 pm EST

Rock n Roll Star-Oasis

Right when the guitar yells, you know to strap the seatbelt and hold tight.

great discussion listings. i fell that a great first song has to signal a change or coming of something bigger &/or better. my choices:

1) i saw her standing there – the beatles

can you imagine being around in ‘63 when this dropped? the old guard was dead. 1.2.3.4!

2) runnin’ with the devil – van halen

some people i know consider this the ONLY van halen song. announces presence with authority.

3) i don’t know – ozzy osboourne

randy & ozzy changed metal forever with this track.

4) kill the poor – dead kennedys

punk had been politicized in the UK but not here. jello & co. brought us up to speed.

5) sgt. pepper’s lonely hearts club band – the beatles

again, the old guard was dead.

6) roadrunner – modern lovers

if it would have been released when it was recorded (1973 instead of 1976) it would have been much more influential than it is already.

7) blitzkrieg bop – ramones

8) break on through – the doors

validated the darkness in rock.

9) you’re no good – bob dylan

not the biggest fan, but give him props for change in 1962.

that’s enough. could go on for a long time…

chrishent | 8/1/2006, 7:42 pm EST

Some very good songs have been mentioned here, but come on, no “Waiting Room” by Fugazi? I know I’m kinda stretching the rules of the list here because it was in one of their EPs before it was on “13 songs”, but you cant deny how great that song is.

ishmael | 8/1/2006, 8:14 pm EST

Ya know, for a split second I was seriously thinking about posting a list of all the people who need to take a literacy course at their local community college so that they can learn to address a post on-topic, but then I realized:

1) It would be unreasonably petty,
2) It would waste way too much valuable free time, and
3) The people who need it the most would be ironically the least likely to read it because they don’t read other people’s posts, either. LOL.

(And yeah, I know I messed up on the Wallflowers, but hey, one out of 30 ain’t too bad.) Oh, well, “Idiots Rule” (and yes, that was the 8th track off of Jane’s second album, but it still applies).

I have checked this list twice and each time someone has listed “Where The Streets Have No Name” from The Joshua Tree (multiple times no less!)…Just to set the record straight – The Joshua Tree was the bands 7th album release (5th studio album not including the EP U23)…I know this list is just for kicks and giggles but people please come on…Have a sense of history!

wheelsofsteel | 8/1/2006, 8:56 pm EST

And by the by, the correct answer to this lists question is:

“Precious” – The Pretenders by the Pretenders

Bran | 8/1/2006, 9:20 pm EST

Where is the greatest statement of intent of all time, Rock N’ Roll Star by Oasis. This list is a shambles

You guys blew it.
“Rock N Roll Star” absolutely should be on that list. Morons. Big shout out to everyone who misunderstood the objective of this list.

Nice to see RS writers have time to waste on this crappy blog site, considering the magazine maybe has about 23 pages of actual content. Compare the size of RS these days with about 15 years ago. It’s scary.

James | 8/1/2006, 9:48 pm EST

A great debut song I haven’t seen on here yet is “Underwhelmed” by Sloan. A great little story, set up the bands ironic view towards things, still a great crowd pleaser at shows.
Normally I’ll defend Pearl Jam through anything, but “Once” as one of the great first songs on a first album I’m not too sure about. Good song, but to ever be on a defining list, not too sure about that.
Oh, and for that girl that was going on about Simple Plan… sweet fancy Moses girl what are you thinking?! Peirre is a genious? Of marketing maybe, but of song writting? I wonder about the kids today sometimes…

D | 8/1/2006, 10:31 pm EST

david bowie’s first song on his first album was in fact UNCLE ARTHUR. Yet another poor soul with the Attention Defecit thing, or mercury or lead poinoning. I can’t know.

JP | 8/1/2006, 11:24 pm EST

First songs on debut albums…most of these have been mentioned, but I think they bear repeating.

In my view, this is supposed to represent music that grabbed you from the first note with something you had never heard before.

1. Welcome to the Jungle – off GnR’s “Appetite for Destruction”

2. Head Like a Hole – off NIN’s “Pretty Hate Machine”

3. Cowboys From Hell – off Pantera’s “Cowboys from Hell”

4. Livewire – off the Crue’s “Too Fast for Love”

5. Girls on Film – off Duran Duran’s self-titled debut

6. Supervixen – off Garbage’s self-titled debut

7. Running With the Devil – off VH’s “Van Halen I”

8. We Die Young – off Alice in Chains’ Facelift

9. Runaway – off Bon Jovi’s self-titled debut

DEBUT albums, people. Some of you wrote lists without naming one song off of a debut album. Check the criteria before you clog up the posts.

I prefer a little eclecticism – who would’ve thought so many readers’ musical tastes would be so limited? Surely you can think beyond indie-rockers or 80’s metal or whatever your niche may be. It dismays me to see so little stylistic breadth in these posts because it says something unfortunate about contemporary audiences…but enough whining. Getting down to bidness (no particular order here):

Guns N’ Roses – Welcome To The Jungle
The Stooges – 1969
Gang of Four – Ether
Beastie Boys – Rhymin’ And Stealin’
Ice Cube – The N***a Ya Love To Hate (his SOLO debut, I should clarify)
Steely Dan – Do It Again
Bad Brains – Sailin’ On
Sex Pistols – Holidays In The Sun
The Germs – What We Do Is Secret
Jimi Hendrix – Purple Haze

Some of the above had EP’s preceding their first albums – big friggin’ deal. It’s traditionally accepted in rockcrit circles that the debut full-length LP comprises an artist’s first “major” statement. Either that or a first single. And nobody heard the Beasties’ first EP until “Licensed To Ill” made them superstars.

I’m only posting here to say that the board monitor, in writing about the new ‘The Band’ tribute album, seemed surprised that a Dylan-backing band was popular enough to warrant such an accolade. Are you kidding? Has Rolling Stone fallen that far from the tree. The Band is one of the most influential rock/country/alt-country bands ever. Good Lord. Has Jann Wenner completely lost control?

Holiday from Madonna’s self-titled debut is the real standout on that album.

Someone mentioned Hunter by Bjork. That was not on her first album – it was on Homogenic. The best track off of Debut was probably Human Behavior.

I’ll also add Looking For A New Love by Jody Watley from her debut.

Homework was Daft Punk’s debut, right? If so, Around The World has to be mention. That song is classic.

“Ramblin’ Rose” from the MC5’s Kick Out The Jams
“Ol’ 55″ from Tom Waits’ Closing Time
“1969″ from the Stooges’ self-titled album
“Rock n’ Roll Star” from Oasis’ Definitely Maybe
“Personality Crisis” from the New York Dolls’ self-titled album
“Safe From Harm” from Massive Attack’s Blue Lines
“Sunday Morning” from the Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico

But the Beatles, Joy Division, Hendrix, the Clash, the Ramones, and the Stone Roses were good choices.

Anonymous | 8/2/2006, 12:18 pm EST

However, the American version (which, in my mind, is superior to the British version) of the Clash’s first album opened with “Clash City Rockers,” not “Janie Jones.”

Paco | 8/2/2006, 4:36 pm EST

The rolling stone list above is way off the mark

Here’s my list:

1) “Stephanie Knows Who” Love’s Da Capo. The mix of jazz, hard rock and byrdsian folk introduces one of the best “sides” in R&R history. Side A of Da Capo is up there with all the great albums ever released. Side B is one of the worst though…

2) “Alone Again Or” proving Love really knew how to open an album (Forever Changes)

3) “Break On Through” the Doors (Electra Records had 2 artists with all-time great opening songs releasing records around the same time).

4) Baba O’Reilly: The Who Who’s Next, how this could be left off is a mystery.

5) “Vine Street”: Harry Nilsson–Nilsson sings Newman, a personal favorite of mine.

6) “Astronome Domine” Pink Floyd’s The Piper at the Gates of Dawn–the coolest/strangest opening song ever.

7) “Search and Destroy” Iggy & the Stooges.

8) “I Zimbra” Talking Heads–Strangely hypnotic off of Fear of Music.

9) “Born Under Punches”–Talking Heads–possibly their best song ever, off of Remain in Light

10) “Imagine” John Lennon, another of the How could RS omit songs.

11) “5 years” David Bowie off of Ziggy Stardust. The best song off of possibly David’s best record (although Hunky Dory is close).

12) “Suzanne” by Leonard Cohen, what a first song off a debut album!

13) “Sunday Morning” Velvet Underground–totally sets the stage for the druggy overtones of their debut.

14) “Singapore” Tom Waits off of Rain Dogs. Sounds like an evil Disney character on drugs, but a great song nonetheless.

15)The Beatles: “Magical Mystery Tour” my favorite Paul opening song ever and a cool hit song that I’ve never grown tired of. It’s sets the stage for the playfully weird album (although MMT isn’t a proper album, it’s been canonnized as a proper album in it’s current format)

16) “Come Together” THe Beatles. John’s best Beatles opener. Really all the Beatles albums started very strong, but these two are the highlights of the bunch.

17) “Bastards of Young” Replacements off of Tim. Their best song and the coolest anti-anthem ever written.

18) “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Nirvana, the most important song of the past 15 years is also a first song. How RS missed this one is a mystery. Nirvana always opened their records well, but this is their best.

19) “Fight Test” Flaming Lips. This song is possibly their best ever, and made me wish that Yoshimi could have even bettered the genius of Clouds Taste or Soft Bulletin, unfortunately the rest of Yoshimi (despite critical raves) didn’t hold up as well as this opening tune.

20) “The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil” by Jefferson Airplane from After Bathing at Baxter’s. This is JA’s best ever song and represents everything they were about from distorted guitars, driving basses, amazing drumming, an incredible 3 strong vocalists. JA at its absolute peak.

I’m stopping at 20, but I’d easily pick these 20 over any of the ones RS listed above and I’m a fan of most of the artists RS listed.

Chuck | 8/2/2006, 4:56 pm EST

And then, there was another. Good job Paco…you can’t read. No wonder all of your picks had “how could RS omit that??” Get a clue people…there are just as much “you guys can’t read comments!” as there are off-topic comments…if you’d read a bit you’d save yourself the embarrassment.

Kelly | 8/2/2006, 5:03 pm EST

Come on guys. . .read the prompt before you list off 20 songs that aren’t on debut albums. Just think in advance about how dumb you will feel when you can’t erase your asinine, irrelevant post.

Kirk | 8/2/2006, 5:08 pm EST

Haha…what’s even more funny when you think about it…you’d figure all these “music fans” would double check the criteria if they thought RS’s list was so off course. But no, people always assume “THEY are wrong, not me”

Kelly | 8/2/2006, 5:08 pm EST

Everything Right is Wrong Again, from They Might Be Giants’ self-titled first album.

How in the world are half the people on this list too stupid to read? Is the american education system really this bad. The terms “first song’ and “debut album” really arent that hard to comprehend. Could you idiots at least take some time to learn about your favourite bands before you start to discuss them?

Once – Pearl Jam, Ten. Not so much because it’s one of their best songs (though I love it), but because it is a hell of a statement as a first song on a debut album. Start out with the 40 second Master/Slave instrumental and then hit hard with the opening guitar Riff and Eddie singing in angry passion.

My Name Is Jonas – Weezer,Blue Album.

Cinnamon Girl – Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Everybody KNows this is Nowhere. Sure he was already established as a musician, but he’s known for his solo career with Crazy Horse, and this is a hell of a song.

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes – Crosby, Stills, and Nash; Self-titled. Beautiful

Jackson Cannery – Ben Folds Five. Or Annie Waits, Ben Folds Solo.

Where do the Children Play – Cat Stevens, Tea for the Tillerman. maybe

Got the subject wrong with this last one, but if there’s ever a best title song off a debut album . . . Layla.

“I know it’s considered overplayed and whatnot but you cant deny the power of “Stairway to Heaven” it has got to be up on this list. Kiss just wouldnt be the same band if they hadnt recorded it.”

Go home buddy. As far as I see it, that’s three strikes, and you’re out.

I was so happy to see Blondie’s X-Offender on the list, It is amazing that a Band as big as Blondie, are constantly over looked in such lists, their contribution to rock is second to none.

X-offender is a 5 star debute single, and the album “Blondie” is just a standup album.
